BUILDING THE FUTURETomorrow’s possibilities are endless when we, as one nation, tap into the collective power of our shared service. This age-old spirit of ‘bayanihan’ continues to be our rallying front.

As our country navigates through a time of change, we at the Metrobank Foundation believe that the bayanihan culture we have so long established in the past remains ever more relevant in our mission to build the future.

The time is ripe to draw on the strength of our solidarity to drive forth positive change in the country. Every Filipino is a stakeholder in this movement—and each one, whether in the public, private, or civil society sectors, is called to give whatever one has to offer.

No more competitions, only stronger collaborations. No more lone wolves, only one solid pack treading towards the same destination of a progressive nation. This is the future we envision. This is the future we work to build.

Let’s get to work.

ABOUT THE COVERInspired by the concept of bayanihan, the cover features a community of stakeholders working in the spirit of cooperative effort to achieve a common goal.

Metrobank Foundation’s 2017 Annual Report paints such picture of nation-building: an empowered citizenry working together—carrying their own load, while simultaneously lightening the load of others—to make concrete, lasting impacts in society.

2017 ANNuAL REPORT 3

Over the years, we have seen unprecedented opportunities that have placed our country in an ideal position to grow stronger in progress.

This is great news for business, but we have to do more.

At the Metrobank Group, we believe that building the future of our nation goes beyond the corporate agenda. In order to effect change in the lives of our stakeholders, we have to reach them, engage them, and work with them in the spirit of communal unity.

As such, we have ever since set it as our priority to serve the Filipino people through corporate philanthropy and social responsibility.

Since Metrobank Foundation’s inception in 1979, we have stood committed in fostering collaborative partnerships and empowering individuals and communities to become agents of positive change in their respective sectors and spheres of influence.

With service excellence as our foremost advocacy, the Foundation pays tribute to the country’s best teachers, soldiers, and police officers whose unsung efforts in duty make a difference in the broader community.

Our pioneering program for the arts has evolved to become not only a recognition platform for visual artists to showcase their skills, but also a space where dialogues and discussions in cultural heritage can flourish.

The Foundation’s grants program has moved from one-timeinterventions in certain communities, to sustainable collaborations and enduring alliances with social development partners in the fields of HEAL– health, education, arts, and livelihood

As we move onto the years ahead, we are excited and optimistic to continue creating meeting points where numerous expressions of involvement, responsibility, and giving back can come together in a holistic manner.

The future is bright, but it takes cooperative effort to ensure no one gets left behind. And so, whatever your vision is, we hope to work with you in our collective mission to build the future.

2017 ANNuAL REPORT 5

The past year has been particularly eventful for us at the Metrobank Foundation. In 2017, we are proud to have devoted many of our advocacies

and interventions to building a better future for you—our chosen stakeholders.

But we know raising the bar higher in the practice of corporate social responsibility is only half the equation. As we have acknowledged time and again, we cannot build the nation on our own. The overflowing support that we receive from each institutional partner, awardee, scholar, and beneficiary remains to be the heart and soul of these accomplishments.

As such, this year’s annual report is a fitting celebration of the cooperative effort of everyone who has endeavored to join us in making lasting changes for the country and its citizenry. What you will read in the next few pages are stories of passionate men and women who have broken new grounds and braved many odds just so they can make a difference where and when it is most needed.

From a soldier whose unceasing efforts in building peace help resolve enduring clan wars in a war-torn community, to a young math wizard and a scholar-graduate whose passion to their crafts inspire many of their peers, these men and women aptly exemplify what it means to be selfless and sincere in contributing to the country’s social development.

It is the various initiatives and efforts they do in their respective fields that make the most resounding impact for generations to come. They are the true builders of our nation’s future.

Coming from such a milestone year, we at the Metrobank Foundation aspire to higher levels of excellence and stronger chains of collaboration in the years ahead. There is much to be done – and we are excited to work with you every step of the way.

FOSTERING A CULTURE OF SERVICE EXCELLENCEIn 2017, the Metrobank Foundation recognized ten (10) Outstanding Filipinos. The award is conferred for being an exemplary public servant—but more importantly, an Outstanding Filipino is worthy of such recognition because he/she is an active agent of positive change and influence in their communities. Introducing the theme “Beyond Excellence,” one must have made a long-lasting positive impact, as well as concrete contributions to the onward development of communities. He/she must also display patriotism, integrity, courage, and social responsibility—the universal values that Filipinos are defined by.

In seARcH oF eXeMPLARY PUBLIc seRVAntsThe 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos Award was launched on January 25 at Camp Aguinaldo.

From January to March, the Metrobank Foundation led a total of 31 strategic visits to identified regions, offices, stations, and camps nationwide. The Metrobank Foundation tapped alumni organizations and more than 800 Metrobank branches to spread word on the nominations. An integrated communication plan was implemented to effectively reach out to target audiences and achieve higher brand recall. As an innovation, Metrobank Foundation hosted a press conference. Through ground-level visits, press releases, media guestings, and public circulars, the call for nominations was received by over 100,000 teachers, soldiers, and police officers nationwide.

The program’s reputation and prestige are anchored on the credibility of its rigorous selection process—the procedures of which have been perfected and continuously being revised through the years. In the preliminary judging, a Board of Assessors, composed of members from the education, military, police, business, and media sectors determined the 20 national finalists who will proceed to the next round: field validation.

The field validation phase was done for the first time. To maintain integrity and impartiality throughout the process, Metrobank Foundation partnered with the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC), commissioning them as third-party field validators.

In the final judging phase, there were even greater qualifications demanded from the Outstanding Filipino finalists. Each finalist faced the Final Board of Judges for the panel interview. The members of the Final Board of Judges, a multi-sectoral jury composed of key personalities and authorities, were carefully hand-picked based on their areas of competencies to ensure impartiality of results.

As a public reveal, a press conference was held on August 10 to officially introduce the 10 awardees.

GReAt AcHIeVeMent FoR GReAt sAcRIFIcesThe 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos are modern day heroes who have gone beyond personal limitations to earn outstanding achievements—teachers who are shining examples of mentors whose influence transcend the four walls of their classrooms; valiant soldiers who play critical roles in easing crisis situations, liberating communities from insurgent forces that threatened their peace and helping rebuild lives amidst devastation; and police officers, tasked “to serve and protect” and face daily battles in the communities they safeguard, who earn the respect and support of the people in crime prevention and solution. Every day, they rise above their personal and professional circumstances, in order to create an impact, not only for themselves, but to the larger community where they belong.

The 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos were awarded with gold medallions by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on September 5 at the newly unveiled Grand Hyatt Manila. Likewise, they were conferred with trophies and a cash prize of 1 million pesos each during the formal conferment ceremonies at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium on September 7. A weeklong recognition activities was designed which included courtesy calls at the Senate of the Philippines and at the House of Representatives, wherein resolutions commending the awardees for their achievements were presented by members of both legislative houses. Series of interviews in different TV and radio programs were held. These media activities aimed to feature their stories and outstanding contributions to nation-building. They have officially joined the ranks of 645 Outstanding Filipinos recognized since 1985.

The successful implementation of the Outstanding Filipinos Award is also attributed to the continued commitment of institutional partners who work with the Metrobank Foundation in the spirit of mutual endeavor for service excellence. The program would not be a resounding success without the support of institutional partners—Department of Education (DepEd), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of National Defense (DND), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), Rotary Club of New Manila East, Rotary Club of Makati Metro, and PSBank.

In a meek municipality in Agusan del Norte, 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino Edgar Elago actively helps impoverished youth find their way toward the future they deserve.

Through his initiative called “Project Scholar,” Elago stands in as the enabler of dreams of underprivileged students, assisting them in their pursuit of college education.

Coming from a poor family himself, Elago knows the struggle of trying to finish school with little financial means. He thus serves to facilitate the students’ college applications and help them look for scholarships.

“I initiated Project Scholar because I know how it feels to be like them. Despite our family situation, I have never given up on my dreams. That’s the same mindset I want the scholars to have,” he says.

Inside the classroom, Elago is an arts and culture teacher. Guided with the belief that cultural conservation plays a key role in the development of our nation, Elago developed instructional materials that integrate the study of local culture and heritage into different subject areas.

Pushing his advocacy further, Elago established Art Shop—a social enterprise renting out Filipino costumes which he designs himself. Marrying his love for arts and culture with his calling to help scholars graduate, he invests part of Art Shop’s income to fund Project Scholar. He also employs his scholars in the production of costumes so they can earn money and learn the value of financial management early in life.

Started in 2011, Project Scholar has now helped over 60 students—among them indigenous peoples, out-of-school-youth, and former drug addicts—to finish school, and, in Elago’s words, “become productive members of their families and communities.”

The first scholar to graduate from the pioneer batch, Marvic Luyahan, is herself now a teacher. Saying she was inspired by Elago’s deeds who has become her role model, Marivic is now paying it forward by supporting the studies of her eight siblings.

“Becoming an Outstanding Filipino is not just for the name’s sake or the prestige – it is all about service. After all the hardships I have been through, it is only fair that I help those who go through similar struggles,” Elago says.

The Metrobank Foundation sustained its leadership role in the annual celebration of National Teachers’ Month (NTM) which runs from September 5 to October 5. Member companies of the NTM Coordinating Council lined-up several activities and events to honor and pay tribute to the profession of teaching. During the 38th Manila International Book Fair, the country’s largest annual book fair, all teacher-visitors were given free passes including freebies. A gratitude wall for teachers was also set up, where the fair crowd can write their messages of gratitude to their present and former mentors who have made a difference in their lives.

In partnership with the Government Service Insurance System, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Museo Pambata, and the National Museum of the Philippines, the 5th Alternative Learning National Conference Workshop for teachers was implemented on September 28-30. With the theme “Developing 21st Century Skills: Culture and Art Based Learning Resources,” the workshop focused on history teaching through arts, films, and public spaces such as museums to better engage learners and have a deeper appreciation of our cultural heritage.

Pursuant to Republic Act 10743, designating October 5 of every year as “National Teachers’ Day (NTD),” the culminating celebration held in Legazpi City by the DepEd showcased the collaborative efforts of the NTM Coordinating Council in recognizing the Filipino teacher. Affirming the role of teachers in national development, NTd adoptedthe theme “Gurong Pilipino: kaakbay sa Progreso.” Around 6000 teachers from Regions IV-A, IV-B, and V flocked to Legazpi City to partake in the festivities.

NOTED (Network of Outstanding Teachers and Educators), the honor society for Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino teachers, organized a lecture caravan on September 9 at the university of Makati. With the theme “Cultivating and Sustaining the Culture of Teaching Excellence,” topics covered include: creative teaching, skills facility for adult learners, teacher leadership, and challenges in teaching the millennial learners. Teachers from DepEd Divisions of Makati City, Taguig, Pateros, Pasig, and Quezon City were in attendance.

The 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino teachers were also presented to DepEd secretary Leonor Briones on September 7.

Beyond Duty

Being in the midst of decades-old separatist movements and clan wars in Mindanao has led 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino Lt. Col. Ricky Bunayog to realize that achieving

a future built on peace necessitates more than a change in military strategy. It demands a change of culture.

“In my 28-year service experience, I realized warfighting does not make so much an impact in the community as actively pursuing peacebuilding projects,” he says.

back when he was first assigned in Central Mindanao in 1995, Lt. Col. Bunayog recalls how distrusting and suspicious the residents were of the military.

“People didn’t respect us. Whenever we would drive around the countryside, we would pass by children mocking us—gesturing at us as if to shoot us,” he recalls.

From thereon, Lt. Col. Bunayog has been actively pursuing peacebuilding projects to change public perception of the military. Aside from strategizing combat missions in his stint as commander of 33rd Infantry Battalion, he has led the peaceful resolution of clan wars or “rido” in five municipalities of Sultan kudarat and ten municipalities of Maguindanao. Many of these ridos emanate from clashes over property and political power, leading to numerous casualties and further divisions amongst the Moro population.

Without arms or use of force, Lt. Col. Bunayog actively sought the conflicting clans to come to the negotiating table. He partnered with local leaders and town authorities in the process of finding acceptable solutions between the warring parties.

Meanwhile, acknowledging education as the primary tool to improve constituents’ lives, Lt. Col. Bunayog facilitated the construction of Madrasahs and schools in the province, providing children better schooling and education.

“Nowadays, the children no longer mockingly shoot us when we go around the areas of Maguindanao and Sultan kudarat. Instead, they wave at us with the widest smiles they could muster,” he says.

He credits this transformation to the collective effort of everyone who has worked – and continues to work – towards the pursuit of inclusive peace and progress in the province.

“I believe that if everyone does his share of the task, we will accomplish our mission to make these war-torn communities far better than when we first set foot on it.”

For all its woes and wonders, Tondo is a good place to live in. I want people to realize that,” says 2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino PCInsp. Rosalino Ibay, Jr.

Born and raised in Tondo, a cramped district in Manila often portrayed as a cauldron of chaos and organized crimes, PCInsp. Ibay was led to pursue the profession of peacekeeping after the unresolved death of his father through a vehicular accident when he was 13.

“Days before the accident, my father told my mother to take extra care of me. He always believed that I will someday be the biggest blessing in our family. It became my inspiration,” he shares.

True to his father’s words, PCInsp. Ibay, who is the youngest of five children and the only one to finish school, has grown to become “Manila Police district’s Finest Officer.” In his 21 years of service, he has led numerous operations against the most notorious crimes in Tondo, including cases of carnapping, robbery, murder, human trafficking, syndicated illegal recruitment, and prostitution.

In 2012, through a car mapping system he initiated, the City of Manila—once dubbed as the country’s carnapping capital—significantly saw a reduction in incidents of carnapping.

He has also led police operations dubbed as ‘Oplan Baliko’ to stop the illicit spread of counterfeit goods and hazardous imported products at different locations in Manila, leading to increased public awareness and vigilance of such businesses.

Outside police work, PCInsp. Ibay founded the Buklod ng Alyansang Nagkakaisang Anak ng Tondo or BANAT, a non-government organization in Tondo doing humanitarian projects such as medical and feeding programs, and distribution of goods to residents.

PCInsp. Ibay also initiated the formation of “youth drum beaters,” a group of once-notorious out-of-school youth and gang members who now earns money by playing percussion instruments in community celebrations such as fiestas. Two members are now pursuing degreesin Criminology.

“I constantly remind myself that all my efforts should be aligned with our mandated solemn duty to serve and protect. Every time people acknowledge my good deeds, I feel a lot stronger and more inspired to continue pushing towards that mandate,” he says.

We ignite passion.

HARD WoRK PAYs oFF FoR YoUnG MAtHeMAtIcIAnssome people get easily discouraged when losing—but not everyone. At their young age, Chiara Bernadette tan-gatue and Kian Colin Chua of St. Jude Catholic School showed the ability to bounce back—becoming first placers in the 2017 metrobank-mtAp-Deped math Challenge (mmC) grade 6 team Competition.

At the 2016 MMC Regional Finals, Chiara and Kian had their hopes steady. But as the difficult round rolled in, they slipped and got an answer wrong. eventually another team managed to beat them with the smallest of margins. But they were not discouraged and tried again, ultimately redeeming themselves and winning big in 2017.

these kids tried again because they loved math and the people—parents and teachers—who taught them. they also wanted to bring pride to their school and community.

mathematics, however, is a discipline which requires discipline. Chiara and Kian had to train really hard for the chance to prove their worth against other established schools. they had to learn how to solve problems speedily and accurately under time pressure.

But more importantly, they were trained to handle the emotional impact of winning and—sometimes—losing. their coach taught them that hard work makes victory sweeter and that true courage is best shown by accepting defeats when they do come.

Even at their young age, Chiara and Kian realize that proficiency in Math is a gift that must be shared with others. Asked for tips for those who want to be good at math, they encourage their peers to take the initiative and practice different methods for solving problems. they also note that faith and patience from their mentors are key to what they have accomplished so far.

A consistent topnotcher of the Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) and a two-time national champion—2013 MMC Grade 6 individual competition first placer (representing

uP Integrated School) and 2017 MMC Grade 10 individual and team competitions first placer (representing Philippine Science High School-Main Campus), Christian Philip Gelera remains grounded and is quick to credit others for his success.

Tayan, as he is fondly known, has already garnered around 30 gold medals from international math competitions at his young age. But he recalls that it was spelling that he originally excelled in. It took his father, a mechanical engineer, to instill in him the love for the math subject.

That love for math—and the self-discipline continued excellence required of him—carried Tayan to the 2017 National Finals, the day of which was also his birthday. He credits the unending support from his parents, encouragement from his teachers, and affirmation from his schoolmates for the big achievement.

Along the way, he grew a lot. Aside from his computational skills, he learned time management, priority-setting, and consistency in practicing solution sets daily. But more importantly, he learned to respect and even developed friendships with his MMC competitors, many of whom served as his teammates in representing the Philippines during math tournaments abroad.

“There will be always be someone better than you in certain aspects,” Tayan says.

Dreaming of making it one day to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tayan understands that his aptitude for mathematics is a gift. To express his gratitude, he employs the same philosophy that his father applied when teaching him.

“I like to coach my classmates through the process while still making sure that they find the solution on their own,“ Tayan concludes.

Through the 16-year-old MMC, the Metrobank Foundation takes pride in taking the right path in fostering mathematical excellence among elementary and high school students. The longest running math competition in the country, it continued to dominate with its participation rate of more than half a million students joining the nationwide elimination rounds, attracting students from both private and public schools—proof that interest and passion for math is alive and well. The different competitions are venues where our youth practice the values of teamwork, persistence, and analytical thinking. A total of 44 students, representing 13 regions and 29 public and private schools comprised the national finalists. An opening program was held at the Manila Tytana Colleges while the oral competitions were conducted at the Metrobank Plaza auditorium on April 21 and April 22, respectively. More than PhP 600,000 in cash prizes for individual and team winning contestants and incentives for coaches, plus trophies and medals were awarded. Part of the cash prize for the MMC’s regional and national winners went into their newly opened Metrobank Fun Savers savings account.

Chaos theory suggests that a flap of a butterfly’s wings in one place could set off a tornado in another place. Rolyne Dominique Patron, a BS Accountancy graduate, magna cum laude, from Ateneo de

Zamboanga university, believes that if such a small flutter could make an impact, so could she.

Rolyne comes from a family wherein her mother serves as the only breadwinner. despite the financial difficulties, she still dreamed of taking up a course in a prestigious school that would help fulfill her potential. It was then that she applied and was accepted under the Foundation’s ACCESS II (Assistance for the Completion of College Education for Superior Students) program.

“It was an unexpected blessing—my ticket in entering and continuing college without the family sacrificing so much for me,” she recalls.

There were moments when everything seemed so hard and she wanted to give up. But Rolyne realized that she should pursue and endure, not just for herself, but more for everyone who has been helping her to reach her dreams.

The generosity she has received inspired her to give back. As president of the Ateneo Centennial Scholars organization, Rolyne led the conduct of the Operation Shoebox Campaign. They wrapped various school supplies in colorful shoeboxes and distributed them to disadvantaged pupils across the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Currently working at an auditing firm, Rolyne dreams of becoming a Certified Fraud Examiner and becoming an agent of change in the corporate world. She also wants to pursue her advocacy of supporting public elementary students and instilling in them love for learning.

The 19th edition of the annual Graduates’ Forum for Class 2017 scholars was held on June 23 and 24. With the theme “#Payit4ward: Service to 4Cs,” the event highlighted what makes a Metrobank Foundation scholar different—his or her commitment to serve the Creator, clan, community and country. A total of 91 scholars finished their undergraduate degrees, from 21 universities and colleges across the country. Of the 91 scholars, 23 finished with Latin honors—1 summa cum laude, 6 magna cum laude, and 16 cum laude. They were conferred with Metrobank medals and certificates of academic excellence.

In 2012, to mark Metrobank’s 50th anniversary, an additional fund was donated by the mother company to the Metrobank Foundation to implement new programs. It thus gave birth to new scholarship programs benefitting a number of additional scholars—ACCESS II and MbFI-Manila Tytana Colleges youth for Excellence and Service (yES) Scholarship Program. The Ty family foundation—GT Foundation, Inc. —also went into providing scholarship opportunities for underprivileged students. MetroGold Scholarship Program became the new brand of the old College Scholarship Program of the Foundation since 1995. Meanwhile, “managed” scholarship programs—MbFI-Pacific Paint (boysen) and Fluor-MbFI—have been sustained to assist select architecture and engineering students enrolled in select academic partners.

A former medical representative, 2017 Metrobank Art & Design Excellence Sculpture Grand Awardee Moreen Joy Austria embarked on a new interest in sculpture after working in the corporate world for 12 years.

The 41-year-old sculptor has long been an art enthusiast, but it was not until she enrolled for a welding technology program by TESDA (Technical Educational Skills development Authority) that she finally braved to try her hand at sculpture. Though a late bloomer in the creative scene, she has easily found her niche in welding metals into art.

Her winning work “Pagtaguyod” is her love letter to the future of Filipino families. Made of brass, granite ceramic and steel, the welded sculpture features five interconnected human figures of a family supporting each other, in dreamy and graceful ascent, as they altogether rise and carry a blue paper plane.

In line with this year’s Sculpture Recognition Program prompt to envision a public art that reflects the Filipino identity, Austria’s Pagtaguyod will be transformed into an on-site sculpture at the rotunda of Federal Land, Inc.’s Metro Park in Pasay City. using the same materials converted to a monumental scale, the sculpture will serve as the district’s signature marker—embodying not only the vision of the place but the concretion of values Filipinos hold dear.

Incidentally, the concept for Austria’s award-winning work came from one afternoon’s leisurely stroll along Metro Park. While she was there, Austria saw a young couple supporting their baby boy in his first steps. The scene, so simple yet sincere, left a mark on her and ultimately inspired her to create Pagtaguyod.

“I remember the little boy struggling to walk to his father, and I heard the mother laughingly say, ‘He’s coming over!’ Something about that sight with OPM (Original Pinoy Music) playing in the background made me realize that we, Filipinos, are a people of faith, family, relationships, and hope,” she recalls.

Herself a mother to four children, Austria believes the strength of our nation lies in the sense of togetherness of the society’s most basic unit: the family. She hopes that her sculpture sends out “a positive subliminal message to the public that despite our differences, at our core is our love for family.”

The MADE Art Exploration Lecture Series held on September 22 at the Le Pavillon once again provided a venue for workshops and special activities as a way of breaking down the notion that “art and design” are just for the appreciation of a select few. The lecture series aimed to promote higher public appreciation for the positive work that artists and designers do.

The art thrust of the Metrobank Foundation was expanded to educate people on cultural heritage through the launch of an advocacy to help sustain and preserve our cultural heritage. An inaugural lecture was held on September 23 to kick-off the different activities lined up. Both tangible and intangible cultural heritage are covered by the program. The program follows the ‘IDEA’ framework—inspiration, development of skills, exposure, and applications. Its primary thrust is on built environment and built heritage, with secondary concentrations on selected fine arts and intangible cultural heritage.

To raise internal awareness on the art thrust of the Metrobank Foundation among Metrobankers, the 2017 MADE winning artworks including select winning pieces in the past were displayed in an exhibit at the main and 2nd floor lobbies of the Metrobank Plaza. Art demonstration classes and tours on Metrobank Plaza artwork collection were also conducted for interested employees during lunch breaks.

The Grants program of the Metrobank Foundation continued to make strides in helping raise the quality of life of the poorest, most vulnerable, and underserved sectors of society. To realize the HEAL (health, education, arts, and livelihood) as priority thrusts and guiding framework in forging partnerships with social development partners, more strategic and responsive approaches were employed on its grants administration. In 2017, there was a recorded increase in supporting high-impact Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-related projects and specific interventions under the HEAL thrusts. The network of social development partners was expanded catering to those which implement long-term and high-impact programs and projects.

In 2017, a total of 78 socio-civic and charitable organizations including government and non-government institutions were provided with grant assistance. The consolidated amount disbursed accounts to PhP 28 million catering to 285,247 beneficiaries.

On the occasion of its 55th anniversary, Metrobank, through the Metrobank Foundation and GT Foundation, held the traditional Anniversary Grants Turnover Ceremony on September 7 at the Metrobank Plaza auditorium. A total of 37 social development partners attended the ceremonies.

Every day, over 9 million Filipinos live without a basic right: access to clean water. Millions of people, most of them children, get sick each year from easily preventable waterborne diseases in the country.

This freshwater scarcity is a growing issue the Metrobank Foundation has committed to address through its healthcare interventions. In particular, the Metrobank Foundation supports the construction and installation of wASH (water sanitation and hygiene) facilities in public schools and the conduct of lectures and seminars on health maintenance and proper hygiene.

In 2017, the Metrobank Foundation supported the World Vision Development Foundation in their project to construct hand washing and drinking facilities in two public elementary schools in the province of North Cotabato. A total of 676 elementary schoolchildren from Lapan Elementary School and Ginatilan Elementary School have benefitted from the newly constructed facilities.

“The hand washing and drinking facility reminds our pupils on the importance of proper hygiene by using it during recess and lunch time. They now have safe potable water,” says Rhodora Dano, principal of Ginatilan Elementary School.

Meanwhile, in Lapan Elementary School, the construction of wASH facilities paved the way not only for schoolchildren to have access to safe drinking water, but more importantly a stronger collaboration within their community.

“Before the construction, we held consultation meetings with our local officials, students, and parents. Our dream of having a hand washing and drinking facility has now come into a reality because of the unity among members of the community. The presence of concerned organizations like World Vision and Metrobank Foundation was such a big help,” shares principal Perlita Guintaos.

According to Guintaos, the grade-schoolers now have accessible source of drinking water during lunchtime. They need not go out the school premises just to secure their drinking water. It is also a useful facility during their school-based feeding program and in watering their plants.

“I am very happy to have this project in our school. I will encourage my schoolmates to take good care of this facility so that more children can still access it,” she says.

By providing access to clean water, Metrobank Foundation hopes to contribute towards lasting community health, improved educational outcomes, and sustained local development.

Recognizing that education is a driving force in nation-building, the Metrobank Foundation has ever since committed to contribute towards the achievement of quality education for Filipinos. Among its priorities are providing physical access to education, teacher training, and programs for indigenous peoples (IPs), persons with disability (PWDs), and indigent children.

It is this which brought the Metrobank Foundation to partner with organizations like Purple Centers Foundation (PCF). PCF works toward providing free access to education, health care, and social services for its beneficiaries in Tondo, bulacan, and baguio. The organization believes education is key to get children out of poverty and have a better chance at life.

The collaboration between the two foundations focused on educating IP children. Among the six students provided with scholarship grants was Starla May Ernesto, a member of the Ibaloi and kalanguya tribes. Living in a depressed community in Baguio City, she receives educational support in the form of allowances for uniforms, school supplies, food, transportation, and school projects.

Her parents have irregular jobs, while two of her siblings quit school to work at call centers. Wanting to contribute her share to the family, Starla even uses her own savings so that she can sell barbeque from time to time.

An incoming Grade 12 student, Starla wants to study Psychology in college. She has always been interested in people, their various personalities, and how they interact with each other. She was also inspired by a PCF social worker who has constantly encouraged her to do well in school despite various challenges. Her ultimate dream is to help the youth of Baguio City who are struggling with depression.

“The help that I’ve received is something I will always treasure. It is up to me to make sure that this opportunity will not be wasted,” Starla says.

Recognizing the power of arts to inspire creativity and promote socio-cultural awareness, the Metrobank Foundation supports organizations whose projects include art lectures and workshops, exhibits, and book publications. Art as a tool for psychosocial interventions is also being championed by Metrobank Foundation, reaching out to vulnerable sectors specifically children-with-special-needs and children-in-conflict-with-the-law.

In 2017, ART Ventures and Advocacy Network (ARTVAN) was among the Metrobank Foundation’s network of social development partners for the art thrust. ARTVAN’s mission is to foster art as a vehicle for holistic development, healing, and an advocacy for social change. By showcasing the innovative ideas and works of Filipino artists, ARTVAN hopes to inspire people towards an open and creative society, respecting cultural diversities.

Together with the uP College of Education, Art Education Area, ARTVAN mounted the “SAuNLAD: Si Dayang sa Makabagong Panahon” exhibit at the Gateway Gallery in Cubao, Quezon City from March 18 to April 1. As a visual art-poem collaborative exhibit, it sought to promote awareness on the arts and gender and development (GAD) and provided a venue to discuss and appreciate gender and the arts.

Romina “Phoebe” Beltran-Almazan, ARTVAN’s founding president, describes the project as the unification of both visual and verbal art. Visual artists gave unique interpretations of women in modern Filipino society and their role in bringing forth positive social and cultural transformation. Each artwork is accompanied by a poem, strengthening the meaning of each image through written interpretations by contemporary Filipino poets.

“This project raised awareness on the role of women in the emerging society, which transcends being a wife and mother. At the same time, the collaborative efforts of visual artists and poets brought new meaning to the works themselves as stories were told visually and verbally. It also opened pathways and opportunities to the other artists (both male and female) to explore their own styles, ideas about women, and career possibilities. In fact, one artist who was considered a beginner at that time, was given the opportunity to hold her one-woman show at the same venue. This experience further cemented one of our beliefs that art is for everyone,” shares Beltran-Almazan.

“until people have not valued the arts, and as long as there is a community of artists who would lend their voices to enrich Filipino culture, and society, we will keep going,” Almazan says.

Goal 1 ‘No Poverty’ and Goal 2 ‘Zero Hunger’ of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) respectively aim to “end poverty in all forms everywhere” and “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.” In order to contribute in realizing these specific SdGs, the Metrobank Foundation deemed it necessary to support programs and projects on livelihood which will provide opportunities for underprivileged families to be self-sustaining and break away from the cycle of dependence and poverty in the long-run.

Hineleban Foundation, Inc.—organized by individuals who are passionate on the restoration of environment, spearheading sustainable livelihood opportunities for the Lumads and the Bangsamoro through Transformational Business Partnerships—became one of Metrobank Foundation’s social development partners for its livelihood thrust in 2017.

Through the “Sacred Customary Compact” signed by Hineleban Foundation in 2012 with the Seven Tribes of Bukidnon, duly recognizing their role as “Custodians of the Forest,” livelihood opportunities are made available for the members of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) including the marketing of their produce.

The Metrobank Foundation extended grant assistance in support of their capacity-building program for coffee-growing IP communities in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. The goal is to increase their household income and achieve environmental resiliency. A 5-day training was held at their Tuminugan farm in Manolo Fortich, with the following topics covered: proper growing and maintenance procedure of Arabica coffee; environmental protection and conservation; mechanisms to prevent forest fires; Hineleban Technology of Reforestation; natural resource management and nursery production of Calliandra; and financial management.

In several months, the capacity-building program has resulted to the production of premium coffee berries. Farmers are provided the opportunity to market their produce at a higher cost, as Hineleban Foundation buys from them the meticulously picked red ripe berries at three times higher the price being offered by other local traders. Farmers need not worry about the process of producing quality coffee berries as these are processed in a post-harvest facility at their Tuminugan farm. Said facility can process up to 12 to 15 tons of quality Philippine coffee per year. Coffee berries are finely roasted, tucked into quality eco-friendly bags, and then marketed to niche cafes, restaurants, hotels, specialty stores, and online buyers.

Bae Inatlawan Adelina Tarino, 56, and a resident of Inhandig, Barangay Dalwangan, Malaybalay City was among those coffee farmers trained by Hineleban Foundation.

“when the time Hineleban Foundation came to our community, we did not hesitate to accept the project. We trusted the people behind the organization for we are aware as to how they work well with IP communities. We are thankful for the opportunity given that we have now an additional income to send our children to school. We hope to sustain the practices in order to produce quality coffee berries and expand markets in the future,” she shares.

By the end of 2018, an estimated 19 tons of coffee berries will be produced from 21 hectares of farm lands. Given the impact, it is not surprising that more members of the community have now expressed interest to partner with Hineleban Foundation.

As holder of the 2017 Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair for Public Service and Governance, Vice President Maria Leonora “Leni” Robredo delivered a lecture titled “Tsinelas Leadership as Vehicle for Empathy and Hope” on March 14 at the Ateneo Professional Schools in Makati City.

The Vice President said ‘tsinelas’ leadership, a term first practiced and advocated by her late husband Jesse Robredo, is a brand of leadership that commits to keep everything simple and to serve as close to the grassroots community as possible.

She highlighted the current efforts of her office to apply this principle to their Angat Buhay anti-poverty program. Linking development organizations and the business sector to 50 of the poorest towns in the country, Robredo said they involve the people in developing sustainable projects for their communities.

A joint undertaking between Metrobank Foundation and Ateneo de Manila university, the Professorial Chair for Public Service and Governance is conferred annually to distinguished servant leaders who have shown outstanding records in public service.

As holder of the 2017 Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair in Law, Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJA) vice chancellor Atty. Romeo Callejo, Sr. delivered a lecture titled “Judicial Accountability and Disciplinary Action: Now and Beyond” on december 7 at the Supreme Court Session Hall in Manila.

To curb corruption in the judiciary, Atty. Callejo said there is a need to place formal mechanisms and rules on accountability that will yield an overall change of culture in the judicial system of the country.

As such, he called for the Supreme Court to create a permanent body of judicial peers to conduct investigations and impose corresponding sanctions on members of the judiciary involved in corrupt practices.

A joint undertaking between Metrobank Foundation and PhilJA, the Professorial Chair in Law promotes excellence in the judiciary through the delivery of timely and comprehensive discourses by seasoned legal practitioners.

As holder of the 2017 Chief Justice Panganiban Professorial Chair on Liberty and Prosperity, Far Eastern university (FEu) Institute of Law dean Atty. Melencio Sta. Maria delivered a talk on “Human Rights, Politics, International Law, and Economic Prosperity: A Reading of the Philippine Situation” last September 26 at FEu Makati.

Atty. Sta. Maria advocated for the safeguarding of human rights principles in the economic sphere, particularly in relation to trade with the united States and the European union.

In the face of persisting challenges in our nation, he highlighted the need to facilitate compliance with internationally set human rights obligations and policies. He said an absence of human rights accountability and rule of law in the pursuit of economic growth will ultimately undermine the sustainability of long-term national development.

LOCAL VICTORIES & INTERNATIONAL TRIUMPHSA validation of its advocacies, the Metrobank Foundation brought home 10 trophies at the 53rd Anvil Awards held last March 23, 2018 at Shangri-La The Fort, Taguig City. Metrobank Foundation received the Anvil Hall of Fame, four Gold Anvils, and five Silver Anvils; and was one of three organizations nominated for the Grand Anvil.

The Anvil, annually organized by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines, is dubbed as the “Oscars of PR” for setting a benchmark for public relations excellence in the country.

Awarded with the Anvil Hall of Fame is the “Metrobank-MTAP-depEd Math Challenge (MMC),” the only math competition in Asia spearheaded by a bank that provides a venue for Filipino students in public and private schools to hone their mathematical skills in an atmosphere of friendly competition. MMC received five Anvil Awards in 2002, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017.

Meanwhile, awarded with Gold Anvil is the “2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos (OF) Award.” The OF Award is the most prestigious career-service award for exemplary public servants in the academe, military, and police sectors. A total of 655 Outstanding Filipinos—360 teachers, 154 soldiers, and 141 police officers—have been honored by MBFI since 1984.

Another Gold Anvil was given to “Metrobank Foundation Grants and Social Development Partnerships. ”Through this program, Metrobank Foundation commits to help raise the quality of the poorest, most vulnerable, and underserved sectors by providing assistance to socio-civic, charitable, and development-oriented organizations that implement long-term, high impact projects in line with its adopted SDGs and the HEAL (Health, Education, Arts and Livelihood) framework.

The third Gold Anvil was conferred to the “2017 National Teachers’ Month (NTM),” a month-long advocacy campaign led by Metrobank Foundation and DepEd which recognizes Filipino teachers and educators and their contribution to national development—making the Philippines the only country in the world that celebrates Teachers’ Day for an entire month.

Entitled “Beyond Excellence,” the Metrobank Foundation 2016 Annual Report also won a Gold Anvil for highlighting inspiring narratives and success stories of select stakeholders, instead of simply providing a report of the past year’s accomplishments.

On another front, a Silver Anvil went to the “2017 Bags of Blessing,” a program spearheaded by the GT Foundation, Dr. George Ty’s family foundation, in partnership with Metrobank Foundation. Held every Chinese New year, PhP10 million worth of food packages benefit 10,000 underprivileged families nationwide.

under the PR Tools category, Metrobank Foundation also won four Silver Anvils for the following: Metrobank Foundation bi-annual newsletter “ExceLetter;” “2017 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos Souvenir Program;” “2017 Metrobank Art & Design Excellence (MADE) Awarding Ceremony & Exhibit Opening;” and “2017 Art MADE Public,” respectively.

Metrobank Foundation has been winning the Anvil since 1985. To date, it has won 77 Anvils for its various programs and public relations tools, including the coveted Grand Anvil gaining the record as the first corporate foundation to win a back-to-back Grand Anvil (2009 and 2010) and two Platinum Anvils in the history of the award.

LOCAL VICTORIES & INTERNATIONAL TRIUMPHS DR. GEORGE S.K. TY HONORED FOR BUSINESS AND PHILANTHROPIC EXCELLENCEA proof of his commitment to build the nation through business and philanthropy, Metrobank Group chairman and founder Dr. George S.k. Ty was awarded in 2017 with two prestigious recognitions—the ‘Ramon V. del Rosario (RVR) Award for Nation-Building’ and The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, from the Government of Japan.

dr. Ty is the 9th RVR Award for Nation building recipient. He was conferred the award on July 25, 2017 after being chosen by the Junior Chamber of International (JCI), from an initial list of 26 nominees, to join the roster of distinguished men whose life works resonate with the spirit of JCI’s founding father Ramon V. del Rosario, Sr., considered as the “Father of Philippine Modern Industry.”

The RVR Award for Nation Building is a lifetime business leader award program. Established in 2009, it continues to recognize business leaders who have not only been successful in their fields, but have created a huge impact in nation-building. Previous awardees include Henry Sy, Sr.; Manny Pangilinan; Jaime Zobel de Ayala; Vicente Paterno; Washington Sycip; Oscar Lopez; Jesus Tambunting; and Senen Bacani.

Meanwhile, four months after receiving the RVR Award for Nation-Building, Dr. George Ty was yet again placed in the limelight—this time across Asia’s seas.

On November 7, 2017, he was recognized by the Government of Japan with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star. It was Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe himself who conferred Dr. Ty with the prestigious award at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

Dr. Ty was cited for his efforts in strengthening Philippine-Japanese economic relations. In particular, he undertook landmark joint ventures with several Japanese companies in key sectors such as automotives, real estate development, investment banking, insurance, and consumer finance.

Established in 1875, the Order of the Rising Sun is awarded by the Japanese Government to those who have made distinguished achievements in areas such as international relations, culture andthe arts.

While it is the third highest order bestowed by the Japanese government, it is however the highest ordinarily conferred order. The highest Japanese order, the Order of the Chrysanthemum, is reserved for heads of state or royalty, while the second highest order, the Order of the Paulownia Flowers, is mostly reserved for politicians.

“The honors that I received belong not only to me and my family, but to the Filipino nation and everyone who has contributed to my life and work,” Dr. Ty said.
