This past year the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Research Service Centers supported a significant number of research efforts of engineering faculty and students, as well as research activities in other five colleges at the University of Florida. Collaborations with other universities in the state university system as well as withlocal industry also benefited from the access and services that the RSC provides for materials characterization and analysis, as well as nano- and microfabrication requiring clean room facilities. Training and service in recently acquired instrumentation were integrated to the RSC this past year. Among them a new porosimeter, an x-ray tomography

scanner, and a dual-beam focused ion beam. In the area of nano- and microfabrication, several systems have been upgraded and replaced with newer instruments to facilitate access and reduce processing times. Several new instruments were installed, staff was trained and use protocols were established. Instruments that will become available for training and services in this new academic year are a new EPMA and SEM-EDS-EBSD. A new facility, the Nuclear and Fuels Materials Characterization facility (NFMC) was successfully evaluated and approved as partner facility of the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF). This facility is now listed as available for new proposals through NSUF.We are all looking forward to help RSC users with all the research opportunities that will be enabled by all the instruments and facilities added this year.

Luisa Amelia Dempere. Ph.D.Engineer and RSC Director

We are incredibly grateful to our staff and users for making the Research Service Centers (RSC) a fantastic facility to study and fabricate materials. The RSC is celebrating its 7th year in existence, having been created to enhance the research, education, and public service missions of the University of Florida by providing access to characterization and process instrumentation to academia and industry. The RSC continues to play a critical role in supporting a broad domain of scientific inquiry that encompasses nanocomposites, hardware IoT, peripheral nerve stimulation, among many other topics that are a high priority for the nation. During the last year, research

Forrest J. Masters, Ph.D., P.E.Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Facilities

conducted in the RSC led to more than 70 publications in high quality journals (listed in this report), and the experimental resources were integral to writing a large number of proposals submitted by a user base that is more than 150 faculty strong. The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering is committed to supporting these efforts and advancing new ones. The launch of the Nuclear and Fuels Materials Characterization facility demonstrates that commitment. Funded by the Department of Energy, it will provide critical resources to engineers and scientists across the nation that study nuclear energy applications. We look forward to advancing other new ideas that can bolster this program and help the University make an even greater impact on the knowledge base and the transfer of technology. Looking forward to another great year –

The Nuclear and Fuels Materials Characterization facility offers a 'one-stop-shop' approach to users since, as part of the Research Service Centers (RSC), it can arrange for shipment of test materials to and from the NFMCF. The University of Florida also offers final radiological waste disposal upon completion of the work effort, through the UF Radiation Control Office. The NFMCF supports the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) rapid-turnaround experiments, and mid- to long-term research efforts. The RSC is fully committed to completing work for NSUF awards on schedule and on budget.

Currently available for the analysis of nuclear materials are a Transmission Electron Microscope FEI Tecnai – F20 and a Dual-beam Focused Ion Beam FEI Helios NanoLab 600.

The TEM F20 has a 20 - 200 kV operating voltage with a Schottky field emission gun ZrO/W source; super-twin objective lens pole (Cs = 1.2 mm at 200 kV); single- and double-tilt holders available; 0.34 nm point-to-point resolution in conventional TEM imaging.

The FEI® Helios™ NanoLab™ 600 DualBeam™ system integrates ion and electron beams for FIB and SEM functionality in one machine. Users can switch between the two beams for quick and accurate navigation and milling. Convergence of the SEM and FIB at short working distance allows precision “slice-and-view” cross-sectioning and analysis at high resolution.

Untrained users with no knowledge of equipment operation will be assisted and guided by RSC personnel. Appropriate equipment operation training will be required prior to authorize independent use of the NFMCF instrumentation.

Research Highlights

A spiral designed lens was fabricated on both flat and curved surfaces. The design had a spiral spacing that was graded (with a minimum spacing of 1 micron at the center and 10s of microns at the outer edge) and employed thin gold metal to block a particular wavelength regime. The diameter of the lens spiral was 2mm. The design was created via computer aided design (CAD) software and transferred to an electron beam lithography system to create the pattern in a photoresist. The sample later then underwent metallization via regular lift off processing.

Solid-state sensors are advancing rapidly and are being placed in a wide array of applications from mechanical movement (accelerometers), sounds (microphones), and bio detection (glucose, pathogen). The device pictured above was fabricated to detect radiation doses and map the dose over an area, it consisted of a dense array of 1000 p-i-n diodes.

A variety of molds for polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) casting were created in silicon (Si) wafers. These molds can be used for applications such as, fluidic channels or for micro scale stamps for stamp pattern transfers. The mold is designed using computer aided design (CAD) software, and this design is then transferred to the Si wafer via photolithography. The design is then plasma etched vertically into the Si wafer, producing a high fidelity mold. The etch depth is controlled to the sub-micron level.

The field of III-N semiconductors has gained a lot of attention for use in high speed and high power switching as well as solid-state sensors. The high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) device layout (image 1) pictured above was fabricated to specification provided by UF researchers. This die layout contains conventional HEMTs with micron and submicron gates fabricated to 250nm gate length. The mask set allowed for three different gate metals to be used on the same die for both materials and process comparisons.

Nano CT – X-Ray Tomography NSF project "Open Exploration of Vertebrate Diversity in 3D." A National Science Foundation project for many scientists simply know it as the "scan-all-vertebrates" project. Over the next 4 years, Dr. Dave Blackburn will lead an effort to CT scan more than 20,000 vertebrate specimens, representing 80% of all genera, from 16 museum and university collections across the United States.

MoS2 random micro flakes over a SiO2 substrate were mapped and then precisely patterned for transmission line measurements. Starting with a substrate that contains randomly placed MoS2 flakes, an array of fiducial marks are placed via direct milling for subsequent mapping via Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Images were then tiled together to create a single high resolution image. Areas of interest are identified, and a GDS (computer artwork) design is placed over the SEM tiled image. The sample then underwent standard e-beam lithography and metallization via regular lift off processing.
