SESSIONS OVERVIEW

CONCUSSION, NECK PAIN AND HEADACHES: AN EVIDENCE-INFORMED APPROACH FOR CHIROPRACTORS Dr. Shawn Thistle

“Concussion: An Evidence-Informed Approach for Chiropractors” Concussion in sporting environments is common, but this injury can also occur in occupational settings, motor vehicle collisions, falls, and so on. Practicing chiropractors should have a working knowledge of contemporary evaluation and management issues surrounding concussion, as this form of mild traumatic brain injury can result in long-term disability or even death. On-field and clinical assessment, as well as treatment and management of concussion is becoming more evidence-based as new literature emerges to address best practices and support clinical decision making. DCs will often consult and treat patients with recent/acute or prior concussion(s) in clinical practice, whether providing care to athletes at sporting events or dealing with a general patient population. Because athletes are often eager to return to play and potential serious injury may result if they return too early, it is important that concussion be managed following current practice guidelines to ensure best practices are followed. This informative session will provide clinicians a detailed overview of contemporary concepts in concussion assessment and management for chiropractors. Case discussions and practical demonstrations of simple vestibular rehabilitation techniques will be integrated. “Cervicogenic Dizziness – Clinical Implications” From complex post-concussion syndrome cases in athletes to our geriatric patients, dizziness, vertigo and/or unsteadiness can occur in isolation, or in conjunction with other symptoms or syndromes. In this session1, we will explore the literature pertaining to the complex interplay between cervical spine function, head trauma, dizziness and vertigo, emphasizing clinical decision making and best practices for patient care. “Neck Manipulation & Stroke – Reconciling Evidence & Clinical Practice” Finally, a chance to discuss all the evidence on this topic in one session! This is a balanced overview on our state of knowledge on this important and controversial topic – including policy and practice implications, as well as productive patient communication strategies. “Headaches” Headaches are common and can range from being a daily nuisance to disabling and lifechanging for our patients. Chiropractors and other manual medicine providers are optimally trained and positioned to triage, clinically assess and manage headaches for most patients. This informative lecture will explore our state of knowledge about the etiology of the major headache classifications (migraine, cervicogenic and tension-type) as well as review and assess the quality of the existing research literature on clinical management.

THE POWER OF PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE Ms. Erin Crotty A dynamic workshop that will teach Chiropractic Health Assistants how to maximize their career, more effectively communicate with others, enhance the patient experience through the delivery of service excellence, and leverage business etiquette to grow personally and professionally. This full-day workshop will introduce key principles and practical techniques that will enable Chiropractic Health Assistants to enhance their Professional Presence and create a foundation of professionalism; learn how to project their own powerful and authentic presence; effectively communicate and connect with others; enhance the patient experience through service excellence and business etiquette skills; and demonstrate a dynamic leadership style.

“Creating a Powerful Professional Presence to Enhance the Patient Experience” This interactive workshop will teach Chiropractic Health Assistants how to leverage their greatest potential as a leader through their Professional Presence. It will then teach them how to become more aware of their Professional Presence and impact, and then provide useful tools for creating alignment between their intentions and how they want to be perceived by others, especially with patients. Building on the foundation of their own personality and identity, Chiropractic Health Assistants will develop the skills to project an authentic, winning, positive demeanour that gets noticed, acknowledged and rewarded. From the first impression to other high-impact professional interactions, they will develop the skills and attitudes that enhance leadership presence and career success. Group activities and self-reflection assessments will guide each participant in the development of a Professional Presence Development and Action Plan. “The Patient Experience and Service Excellence” Relationships are at the core of business success. How we communicate with one another impacts our relationships. Whether with fellow employees, patients, stakeholders, or the market-at-large, these connections drive business, loyalty and career success. In the chiropractic profession, cultivating a powerful Professional Presence can positively impact the patient experience and overall delivery of service excellence. Every connection and form of communication a Chiropractic Health Assistant has with a patient is vital to the success of any chiropractic clinic. Patient service excellence and etiquette principles should be integrated into every facet of a chiropractic clinic because providing superior patient service is the most effective way to cultivate long-term relationships with patients, build loyalty and trust, and differentiate your clinic in the marketplace. This interactive workshop will raise Chiropractic Health Assistants’ awareness that when they are taking care of the patient relationship, they are taking care of their clinics’ overall success and ability to be of service and help more people. It will also focus on how to develop patient relationships that foster trust and provide a way to accelerate the patients’ confidence in them and the clinic so that they want to invest in you.
