Regina born Renee Rosnes is one of the premier jazz pianists and composers of her generation. Moving to New York City from Vancouver, Canada in 1986, she established a reputation as a major talent, touring and recording with bands led by such esteemed artists as Joe Henderson, Buster Williams, J. J. Johnson, James Moody, Bobby Hutcherson, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, Wayne Shorter, and the Ron Carter Quartet. She is a founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective, with whom she toured for six years. With 15 recordings as a leader to date, and the winner of four Juno awards, Ms. Rosnes has composed more than one hundred works, receiving commissions from Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Tisch Center for the Arts, the Danish Radio as well as SFJAZZ.

In 2014, Renee arranged music for, and recorded with the celebrated soprano, Renée Fleming. Renee also frequently performs with her husband, renowned pianist Bill Charlap, and the couple released their debut two-piano recording, Double Portrait (Blue Note) in 2010. The piano duo was featured, accompanying Tony Bennett on four tracks of the 2016 Grammy award winning album: Tony Bennett & Bill Charlap: The Silver Lining, The Songs of Jerome Kern(Columbia).

Ms. Rosnes’ most recent recording of original music, Written In The Rocks (Smoke Sessions), includes the seven- part Galapagos Suite, inspired by the evolution of life on Earth. The work features her current ensemble of vibraphonist Steve Nelson, saxophonist and flutist Steve Wilson, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Bill Stewart. It reveals Ms. Rosnes at the height of her powers as a pianist and composer. Downbeat magazine praised it as “an exceptional achievement. It establishes - or reinforces the fact that Rosnes is a virtuoso composer - advanced yet accessible, complex but never ostentatious, this is as good as writing can get in this setting.” The project was named one of the Best Albums of 2016 by the Chicago Tribune, and one of the Best Albums in all genres of music by The Nation. www.reneerosnes.com

Four-time Juno award winner and recipient of the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Toronto Musician’s Association, Neil Swainson is among the most respected and accomplished bassists on the jazz scene today. Born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1955, Neil discovered the acoustic bass in high school and primarily taught himself how to play. From 1975 to 1977, he toured Canada with one of the early pioneers of new age music, the flutist Paul Horn.

Soon after, Neil relocated east to Toronto where for the next decade, he worked with such Canadian jazz masters as Rob McConnell, Ed Bickert, Moe Koffman and Peter Appleyard. During this time he was also the bassist of choice for many visiting American musicians including saxophonists James Moody, George Coleman, Lee Konitz, Sonny Stitt and Joe Farrell, pianists Jay McShan, Tommy Flanagan, Joanne Bracken, and guitarists Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis. Internationally, Neil frequently shared the stage with the innovative and dynamic trumpeter Woody Shaw, touring Europe with him in 1985 and again 1987. He recorded two albums with him: In My Own Sweet Way (In’n Out), and Solid (Muse). Both Shaw and tenor sax legend Joe Henderson were featured on Neil’s 1989 debut album, 49th Parallel (Concord Records), and showcased fiveSwainson compositions.

Valued for his intuitive accompanying skills, harmonic depth, technical prowess and stylistic versatility, Neil also caught the ear of the great, British pianist George Shearing, who invited him to join his band. Neil appeared on over a dozen recordings with the pianist, and together they worked with Canadian composer and arranger Robert Farnon, singers Mel Tormé, Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams and Diana Krall. It was a relationship that would last from 1987 until Shearing’s passing in 2011. In 2017, Neil remains as active as ever, recently performing with saxophonist Kirk McDonald - with whom Neil appears on nine of his albums - and also with saxophonist PJ Perry, who was a 2016 recipient of the Order of Canada.

Sponsored and operated by the Regina Jazz Society, JazzFest Regina is an annual event intended to introduce the world of Jazz in all its forms to the city’s many residents. Every summer, JazzFest will showcase many up and coming local and Canadian Jazz musicians along with several internationally known and renowned “Headliners”. This multi-day event will give all in Regina an opportunity to see and hear some of the best jazz music available today. JazzFest is made available to Regina only through the work of many volunteers and the support of a number of sponsors to which we are more than grateful. Check out our “Sponsors” and “Volunteers” recognition pages on this site to view those who have helped JazzFest become a success and part of the Regina landscape – we thank you.

HISTORY2017 is the 9th year of the JazzFest event in Regina. We started slow during the first year but momentum has been increasing at an exciting pace – already for this year we have many musicians wanting to be part of the event – and many more people wanting to help than in years past.

FUTURE PLANSOur plans are to make JazzFest a week long, cultural event in and throughout Regina. In addition to the outside “Stage” shows we now present, there will be additional performances during this week in the evenings at a number of clubs throughout the city along with opportunities for patrons and supporters of JazzFest and the Jazz Society to socialize with the entertainers at local private gatherings. Our plans for this event as support for it grows, will be to bring in more (quantity) and more top quality artists from throughout Canada and internationally. The more we are supported, the more we can bring to the city.

François Bourassa Quartet

The music of François Bourassa (piano, composition) remains deeply personal, created and shared with his longtime-musicians and friends Guy Boisvert (double bass), André Leroux (saxophone) and Greg Ritchie (drums).

His determination to permanently move forward has steered him to play in a wide variety of settings. Inspired by Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter and McCoy Tyner at a young age, François Bourassa has also been absorbed by classical music, 21st century music, world music and pop trends, forming his very own musical vocabulary. For this new album (his 9th) which will be released in autumn 2017, François intends to explore different musical atmospheres. Classical music will always be present as an influence, alongside today’s jazz and free improvisation.

BB King Tribute - Jack Semple

As much a fan of music as he is a maestro, Semple recently developed a complete concert of B.B. King’s material just before his biggest influence passed on to that great gig in the sky. “In my opinion BB King was the greatest electric blues guitarist of all time,” Semple exclaims. “His ability to communicate emotionally with the audience through his guitar was unparalleled. I met him in 1995 and unlike other superstars was humble, patient and empathetic – his generosity was overwhelming. I try to follow his lead professionally.”

In 1995 I went to his concert and met him and he signed and dated my strata caster. The time I met him there were 40 people waiting in line to speak with him. He took as much time as each person wanted with him. He posed for photographs, signed guitars, photographs, and engaged with each one of the fans. The experience was a great lesson for me as a budding musician/artist. He made each person feel important, valued, and significant. His generosity was overwhelming. I try to follow his lead professionally. His artistry as a improvising guitarist is of the same level as Charlie Parker, Joe Pass, or Pat Matheny. I’ve been studying his guitar style and learning the depths of his musical phrasing. To quote my wife who is a classical flute player, she said when hearing him for the first time “when he plays his guitar he might as well be talking”.

The Regina Jazz Orchestra (RJO) is in their fourth year of operation. Their inaugural concert was March 20th, 2013 at the Exchange. This band started by the want and need of the musicians of the city that wanted to have the opportunity to play concert jazz repertoire.

The band is a standard instrumentation big band. 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, bass, piano, and drums, featuring vocalist Pat Steele.

This follows in the tradition of the Bob Moyer Big Band. Bob’s band was the ‘training ground’ where many people in RJO got their start in the playing scene in Regina. Bob’s band, although it is a society big band, was primarily a dance band in the 80’s and performed regular Saturday shows at the old Landmark Inn in the night club Bernsteins. The Bob Moyer Big Band is still performing shows but directed by Brent Ghiglione, with the guidance of Bob’s wife and singer Pat Steel.

The musical director of the RJO is Brent Ghiglione. Brent was a member of the Moyer band since 1979 and leads that band today. Brent started his musical career as director of the Regina Police Jr. Bands, then Campbell Collegiate Music program from 1989 to 2006. Brent is currently director of bands at the University of Regina.

The band plays a wide variety of music from several different big bands, as well as some original music written from members of the band… and of course Bob Moyer.

1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Born in a tent, raised in a cabin on the shores of a glacial lake in the Kluane region of Canada’s Yukon Territory, Diyet embodies her Southern Tutchone, Japanese, Tlingit and Scottish roots with a musical presence that is equally diverse and unique.

She got her start singing on the school bus, went on to acquire a degree in music, then became a published songwriter in Vancouver, BC. When the pull of the North was too strong, she packed her bags, and her Dutch husband, moving back to her village without a plan or even a pub to play in. The result of this unlikely career move has been international collaborations; touring in Canada and Europe; and two acclaimed albums (The Breaking Point, When You Were King) with the third scheduled for release in 2016.

Diyet is Alternative Folk, Roots, Country and Traditional Aboriginal with melodies and stories deeply rooted in her

Indigenous world view and northern life. Her songs are an interpretation of a northern reality: hard, raw and will break you if it can but at the same time, always beautiful, gentle, strange and intensely alive. She performs as a trio with husband and collaborator, Robert van Lieshout on guitar and foot percussion and multi-instrumentalist, Bob Hamilton.

Continuing to live with feet firmly planted in two worlds, Diyet’s adventurous and sometimes chaotic life is on full display in her music. She often says, “yesterday, fishing for our dinner on the ice, the next day, on the stage singing for you!”

“Diyet’s poetic lyrics are heartfelt and true, full of hope and inspiration for positive change in

her community.” ~ DISCourse

Nicky Lawrence Quartet

Born and raised in Mississauga Ontario Nicky has been singing since a young age. Since going back to Sheridan College to earn her education in theatre and vocal studies she has appeared in multiple award winning productions on stage across Canada.

This past spring she brought to life the images of the great women of jazz. KeyChange was a culmination of the effects each woman had on the music industry, thus shaping Nicky as a vocalist and performer today. Also an actor, Nicky has appeared in several television shows and continuing to shine both on and off the screen. She has often remarked “ It’s important for young girls to look up at the stage and screen and see me a black woman, but also see themselves represented. I think that’s what we all want for our young woman.”

Nicky has made her life’s work changing the minds of those who would look at her and assume one thing, yet when they hear her sing and speak they always understand that she is more than just a single voice.

Just for the record, you could easily be staring a Serena Ryder triple album in the face right now.

It might have taken four-and-a-half years for this celebrated Toronto singer/songwriter to gift us with a follow-up to 2012’s expectation-defying critical and commercial hit, Harmony, but a lack of new material was definitely not the hold-up.

No, just as she did for the last record, the prolific Ryder amassed something like 65 or 70 songs during the run-up to her star-solidifying new platter, Utopia. The challenge wasn’t coming up with new material; the challenge was whittling it all down to fit an album-sized package. Ryder was so flush with good stuff heading into Utopia, in fact, that she briefly toyed with releasing her own equivalent of the Clash’s Sandinista! or George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass – a triple LP composed of songs that she envisioned divided amongst moods of “light,” “dark” and the “grey” area in between.

In the end, she chose to compress the full spectrum of emotions into a more manageable, but no less ambitious package that wouldn’t necessarily require booking a day off work to properly absorb in one sitting. But you’ve been warned: there is definitely more to come.

Utopia’s sassy soul-pop romp and lead single “Got Your Number”, hatched spontaneously during an exploratory early writing session that found Ryder once again casting aside her guitar and “just goofing around on the drums, just kind of rapping and rhyming and singing weird jazzy stuff” in search of new musical avenues to explore, is but a tantalizing taste of the surprises Serena Ryder has to offer on her new record.
