Alec Asher's strong Orioles debut unlikely to keep him in majors

Eduardo A. Encina

The Baltimore Sun

There's no question that right-hander Alec Asher pitched well enough in his Orioles debut Saturday to earn another start. But several moving parts will likely push him through a revolving door as the Orioles fill their fifth rotation spot until right-hander Chris Tillman returns from the disabled list.

Asher opened eyes against the Toronto Blue Jays, taking advantage of the opportunity by allowing just one run over 6 1/3 innings in the Orioles' 2-1 walk-off loss at Rogers Centre.

"He certainly did his part," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

Asher's reward will probably be a return ticket to Triple-A Norfolk, or at least that's what Showalter indicated when asked if the 25-year-old earned another start.

Because of a day off Monday before their three-game interleague series at the Cincinnati Reds, the Orioles don't need a fifth starter until next Saturday against the Boston Red Sox. And it's unlikely the Orioles would clog a 25-man roster spot with an optionable pitcher who can't be used for a week.

Kendrys Morales hits walk-off homer off Tyler Wilson; Orioles fall to Blue Jays, 2-1

"I don't know what else you've got to do," Showalter said of Asher's start, "but also with three guys down in the bullpen, we've got to make sure we're covered tomorrow. … So there's a lot of wheels turning there to make sure we can put our best foot forward. We're going to check on our health with a few guys tomorrow, but we'll be covered one way or another."

Take into account that Showalter was staying away from three of his top relievers — Zach Britton, Brad Brach and Darren O'Day — on Saturday because they all pitched consecutive nights in the first two games of the series in Toronto. Asher's roster spot could best be used to bring up an extra reliever from Norfolk.

"You don't want to do that, but we are playing Toronto without Alec [on Sunday] and we're going to play three games against Cincinnati — three games without Alec — and potentially the first game against Boston," Showalter said.

If Asher is optioned back to Triple-A, he wouldn't be eligible to return to fill Saturday's spot barring a player being placed on the disabled list. And much like the righty-heavy Blue Jays lineup playing a role in Asher earning Saturday's assignment, plucking a left-hander such as Jayson Aquino to face a Red Sox lineup that features more lefties might be more feasible.

Regardless, it takes nothing away from how well Asher pitched Saturday. He held the Blue Jays scoreless for his first six innings after escaping a jam in the first inning. After Asher issued a two-out walk to Kendrys Morales to put runners at the corners in the first inning, he went on to retire 15 of the next 16 hitters he faced. He allowed just three hits overall.

"For me, first innings are always the hardest, especially when you want to make a good impression," Asher said. "But, you know, you just try not to think too much. Go out and execute your plan and hopefully it works."

As the game progressed, Asher seemed to learn to trust the defense behind him, unafraid to pitch to contact despite also missing bats with a career-high five strikeouts.

"Everything was working pretty well for me," Asher said. "But just concentrated on staying down and getting weak contact and working off of that. … It is just that much more comforting knowing that you have the defense behind."

He relied on his cutter and two-seam sinking fastball along with a well-timed curveball, locating all three pitches with a precision that kept his pitch count low.

"Was that fun?" Showalter said about watching Asher's outing. "Must've felt great for him, too. We were more concerned about the ups. We had the pitch limit at about 85, but the ups, I think he went four-plus [innings] last time out, and I think you look at the duress of the outing, so to speak.

"That works. He's kind of a sum-of-the-parts guy. When he's got all those pitches working, he was kind of like Wade [Miley] [on Friday] night. That was fun to watch. We liked to have capped him, but he didn't let us cap him."

While Asher went into his spot start Saturday guaranteed nothing beyond this one start, he did everything he could to stick while realizing he couldn't control whether he stays in the Orioles rotation. The other members of the current Norfolk rotation — Gabriel Ynoa, Mike Wright, Chris Lee and Aquino — also have minor league options.

"You can't think about it," Asher said. "It's out of your control. The only thing you control is what you do on the field. So, I just went out there and I competed and executed my plan and see where it takes me from there."

Even if it's not the next time the Orioles need a fifth starter, Showalter said Asher's performance definitely earned another start.

"It is [difficult], but it isn't," Showalter said. "It's a long season. But I think guys are mature enough to understand. He did his part and he made a really good impression and I'll make a bet he gets another start sometime this year."

Kendrys Morales hits walk-off homer off Tyler Wilson; Orioles fall to Blue Jays, 2-1

Eduardo A. Encina

The Baltimore Sun

A shorthanded bullpen situation that had Orioles manager Buck Showalter protecting his top three late-inning relievers placed right-hander Tyler Wilson in a tense situation Saturday afternoon, facing the Toronto Blue Jays in a tied game in the ninth inning.

Wilson has only pitched twice this season, and hadn’t made an appearance since coming in in the middle innings on April 9. But after the Orioles scraped the tying run across in the top half of the ninth, Wilson — who recorded the final out of the eighth — suddenly became the pitcher of record.

Wilson’s ninth inning lasted just one pitch, as Blue Jays designated hitter Kendrys Morales crushed a first-pitch hanging curveball over the center-field fence for the walk-off homer that sent the Orioles to a 2-1 loss at Rogers Centre.

“I wanted to challenge [him] and wanted to get ahead,” Wilson said. “And I didn’t execute a pitch up in the zone and he kind of jumped me from the first pitch. I wanted to get ahead with a breaking ball and try to pitch from there. The guy put a good swing on it and ended the game there.”

Page 10: 2017 Baltimore Orioles - Major League Baseball...2016 Orioles Active Roster Batting Stats I Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Dylan Bundy 36 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

The loss ended the Orioles’ three-game winning streak, during which they outscored opponents, 20-10. It was also their first loss in five games against the Blue Jays this season and first one-run loss after six of their seven wins came by two runs or fewer.

The dramatic ending came after the Orioles (7-3) manufactured their only run in the ninth against Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna.

Welington Castillo reached on an infield single to lead off the frame. Pinch runner Craig Gentry stole second and moved to third on Hyun Soo Kim’s flyout to left before coming home on Jonathan Schoop’s sacrifice fly to center.

“That is my biggest disappointment,” Wilson said. “Sometimes guys are going to get you on a first-pitch homer and you’ll lose. The biggest disappointment is that the guys play hard and it was a great game from start to finish. [Alec] Asher had an awesome start. The guys came in from the ’pen and did their job. The boys played hard in the field. I wanted to be the guy to help close it out at the end right, but rather than the other way. Proud of the way the guys fought. Especially to get that run there in the top of the ninth and give our team a chance. Disappointed I couldn’t be there for those guys.”

Showalter wanted to stay away from using relievers Darren O’Day, Brad Brach and Zach Britton, who had all pitched the previous two nights. Showalter warmed O’Day in the eighth, but after the game said it was only to serve as a decoy. Brach was getting loose in the ninth, but Showalter said he would have turned to him only in a save situation.

“Brach is the only guy I had down there and I would have used him to close, but Darren I wasn’t going to use,” Showalter said. “We [essentially] didn’t have three guys in the bullpen. … That’s how you win the first two games by using those guys and we’ll try to win the series tomorrow.”

Hart can’t strand run for Asher

Right-handed starter Alec Asher’s strong Orioles debut was foiled in the seventh inning, when the Blue Jays scored their first run on Darwin Barney’s RBI single off left-handed reliever Donnie Hart.

Asher, who was charged with one run over 6 1/3 innings, left the game with two runners on. Hart came on to face a lefty-heavy bottom of the Blue Jays batting order.

After Justin Smoak rocketed a hard-hit lineout to the warning track in center field, a ball deep enough to advance both runners but didn’t, Barney entered the game to pinch hit and looped a 1-0 changeup into center field.

Adam Jones’ throw home was on line to get Jose Bautista attempting to score from second base, but it skipped high off the Rogers Centre turf and off Castillo’s mitt as Bautista slid home safely.

Hart, who stranded 13 of 17 inherited runners last season, had stranded both of his previous inherited runners this season.

“Donnie has gotten left- and right-hander hitters out, as he did [Saturday],” Showalter said. “They flared one out there and pushed it across, but so did we.”

Estrada deals

Marco Estrada, who entered the game with a 5.73 ERA this season, posted his second quality start against the Orioles this season.

Estrada held the Orioles scoreless for seven innings, allowing four hits while striking out eight and walking three.

Estrada allowed just one hit after Jones’ one-out single in the third inning — Schoop’s one-out double in the seventh. But Estrada worked out of that inning —even after a wild pitch moved Schoop to third and he issued a two-out walk to Seth Smith — by getting Jones to pop up to shortstop to end the inning.

Estrada also threw six innings of two-run ball in a no-decision on Opening Day in Baltimore.

Gentry contributes

One of the main reasons the Orioles placed Gentry on their Opening Day roster was because he added base-running speed the club didn’t have last season.

But Gentry hadn’t been able to use that ability until the ninth inning of Saturday’s 2-1 loss because he had yet to get on base, opening the season hitless in his first 12 plate appearances.

But Gentry was a factor Saturday by scoring the game-tying run in the ninth.

The Orioles aren’t a team known for manufacturing runs, but they also haven’t had a base-running weapon like Gentry in the past.

“That’s the first time,” Showalter said. “I was talking to him a day or two ago because I know he hasn’t had the opportunity to show what he can bring and today was a good example of the way he can impact a game, especially if you’ve got the guts to run there.”

Orioles' Zach Britton not as dominant in 2017, but still continuing historic save streak

Eduardo A. Encina

The Baltimore Sun

Zach Britton is 5-for-5 on save opportunities this season and continues his climb up the all-time consecutive saves list, but the Orioles closer hasn’t been as dominant as he was during his record-setting 2016 season.

Britton converted save chances on back-to-back nights to start the series in Toronto, closing out the game with the winning run on second base Thursday and he struck out the potential winning run at the plate Friday.

“I just want everybody to know, you’re seeing historic pitching by him,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “It’s hard to do. Just keep in mind, he’s getting everybody’s best shot. When hitters are able to go up there with house money, they have nothing to lose. Everybody expects them to fail, and to continue to get three outs before they score the amount of runs that have to, it’s not easy.”

Britton has allowed 13 base runners over seven relief innings this season, and has placed multiple runners on base in four of his six outings. On Friday, he allowed his first run since Aug. 24, ending a streak of 19 straight scoreless outings.

“It kind of hits you,” Showalter said. “Think about that standard you have to live up to. He doesn’t have to. That’s where the support of his peers [comes in]. Everybody in that clubhouse knows how hard it is to do what he’s done, so it’s pretty hard to match any level. I don’t think anybody in our game’s going to match what he did last year and continues to do this year.”

A measure of how dominant Britton has been – the earned run he allowed on Friday was just his second since April 30, 2016. Britton pitched 41 1/3 innings over 43 appearances without an earned run before allowing one on Aug. 24 against the Washington Nationals.

Page 11: 2017 Baltimore Orioles - Major League Baseball...2016 Orioles Active Roster Batting Stats I Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Dylan Bundy 36 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

“He’s set a standard that I don’t think you’ll see in your lifetime,” Showalter said. “It just won’t happen. I tend to try to enjoy it and watch it and realize how lucky I and we are to have a seat to watch it instead of trying to critique it every night. It’s hard to do. If the fans and people think they have higher expectations of him, they’re not higher than Zach Britton. I can tell you that.”

This season, opponents are getting to Britton more often, batting .385 against his heavy sinking fastball after hitting just .157 against the pitch last season.

“It’s not easy to do what Brad [Brach] or Darren [O’Day] or Mychal [Givens] do, but that’s a different inning," Showalter said. "If you don’t think that’s a different inning, you haven’t been around that many major league games. He’s going to have a potential save that he’s not going to be able to execute and end up -- I don’t call it a blown save; you can’t blow something you don’t have. You’ve got to earn it. We still like him."

Britton’s save Friday gave him 54 straight converted save opportunities, which ties him for second place on the all-time consecutive saves list with Tom Gordon.

Eric Gagne’s record of 84 consecutive saves is still in the distance, but Showalter made it clear Saturday that he believes Gagne’s mark shouldn’t count. Since retiring, Gagne has admitted to using human growth hormone during his career.

“Gagne doesn’t count,” Showalter said. “… So [really] Zach is tied for first, OK? Really, that doesn’t have an asterisk next to it?”

Despite inactivity, brief big league stint important for Orioles' Stefan Crichton

Eduardo A. Encina

The Baltimore Sun

The Orioles officially called up right-hander Alec Asher to start Saturday’s afternoon game against the Toronto Blue Jays, and in a corresponding move optioned right-hander Stefan Crichton back to Triple-A Norfolk.

Crichton was in the Orioles bullpen the previous two games, but didn’t enter a game. He was warming before the ninth inning in Friday's 6-4 win, but closer Zach Britton pitched the ninth because it was a save situation.

“He got a nice blood flow down there a couple times,” manager Buck Showalter said. “That was good. I asked [bullpen coach] Alan [Mills] how’d it go down there and he said he was fine. He seemed like he’ll be a guy who is in control of his emotions. I wanted to get him in a game. Came close a couple times.”

Showalter said he wants to keep Crichton pitching, but added that he might be back with the big league club sooner than anticipated.

“Who knows, he might be back sooner than he thinks,” Showalter said. “… I’d like to have gotten him a chance to pitch, but he’ll get one before the year is over, maybe sooner than he thinks.”

Even though Crichton didn’t get into a game, Showalter said it was important to have him begin to adjust to the major league bullpen environment.

“They get real serious around here and real focused,” Showalter said. “There’s a certain flow to a good bullpen. You almost get to the point where the phone doesn’t have to ring, or it can ring and you don’t have to answer it. You know what’s going on. We’re lucky to have someone like Millsy down there. He runs a good ship down there and he’s got some people who help them run it because they set a great example. And that’s why it’s good to bring young players into that environment.”

Asher joined the club in Toronto on Friday, but was on the team’s 24-hour taxi squad before officially being called up Saturday.

Around the horn

Ryan Flaherty received his first start of the season Saturday, filling in for J.J. Hardy, whom Showalter wanted to give a day off this series to ensure he didn’t play all four games on the Rogers Centre turf. Flaherty has good numbers against Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada, entering the day 3-for-9 with two homers and five RBIs. … Showalter said he is considering giving Chris Davis a day off from first base Sunday and allowing him to be the designated hitter, also with the turf in mind. ... Players on both teams all wore No. 42 on Saturday for this year's annual Jackie Robinson Day. The orange jerseys the Orioles wore Saturday will be auctioned off on the MLB.com website through April 22.

Orioles power past Blue Jays, 6-4 in Toronto, for third straight win

What to watch

1. Orioles debut. The Orioles didn't need a fifth starter until today, and recently acquired righty Alec Asher gets first crack at the job. The club called him up this morning and optioned right-hander Stefan Crichton back to Triple-A Norfolk. Asher was solid in his first start for Triple-A Norfolk and now is charged with handling a righty-heavy Blue Jays order.

2. Streaking. The Orioles and Blue Jays have played even ball in recent years, but the Orioles have been the top contributor to Toronto's worst start in franchise history. Baltimore has taken all four meetings between the teams so far and has won three in a row overall to top the AL East early on.

Umpire injured in Orioles-Jays game released from hospital

Eduardo A. Encina

The Baltimore Sun

Home plate umpire and crew chief Dale Scott was released from a Toronto hospital Saturday morning after being carted off the field in the top of the eighth inning Friday night. A foul ball off the bat of the Orioles' Mark Trumbo directly hit him in the bottom part of his mask.

Scott, a 31-year veteran, was diagnosed with a concussion. He told The Associated Press by text Saturday morning that he was feeling OK and that the results of a CT scan were normal.

After being hit, Scott fell to the ground and was attended to by trainers and EMS personnel. He was mobilized with a neck brace, placed on a stretcher and carted off the field. He was replaced at home plate by Brian Knight.

"I think it’s just a reminder of the challenges physically and the risk taken every night by catchers, umpires and that one, I know Dale had some concussions last year," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said after the game. "That one didn’t sound good. Someone said the replay [showed] it hit like his chin and hit his throat guard? I’m hoping for the best. That one was not good.”

Orioles minor league report: Jomar Reyes off to smashing start with Keys

Jon Meoli

The Baltimore Sun

Triple-A Norfolk

Pedro Álvarez began his minor league assignment well, with two home runs and five RBIs in the first game of the season, but has since struggled. He had a two-hit game Thursday, bringing his average to .207 through eight games entering Friday. Reports on his outfield defense have not been encouraging, though it's still early.

Double-A Bowie

Center fielder Cedric Mullins is off to a monster start for the Baysox, with three home runs helping make eight of his team-high 18 hits (entering Friday) go for extra bases. He's batting atop the order in hopes of developing a leadoff-style approach, and has also walked three times while going 2-for-3 on attempted steals. Two of his three home runs have come in the first inning.

High-A Frederick

Coming off a disappointing season for the Keys, 20-year-old third baseman Jomar Reyes is trying to ensure his second stay in the Carolina League doesn't last long. Reyes had 16 hits in the team's first eight games, with multihit days six times in that stretch. He has six extra-base hits, including one home run, and five RBIs on the young season.

Orioles power past Blue Jays, 6-4 in Toronto, for third straight win

Low-A Delmarva

A pair of 2016 draftees are off to sparkling starts on the mound for the Shorebirds. Ninth-round pick Lucas Humpal has allowed just one run on seven hits with 10 strikeouts over his first two starts, both no-decisions. Zach Muckenhirn, their 11th-round pick, is 1-1, having allowed one earned run on 11 hits without a walk in 10 2/3 innings. He has 14 strikeouts through two games.

Embracing sinker led to Alec Asher's success last year. Will that carry over with Orioles?

It might be difficult keeping track of all the Orioles' new pitchers these days considering the number executive vice president Dan Duquette has stockpiled over the past few weeks.

So let’s move away from the Orioles’ cluster of roster moves to focus on the pitcher starting Saturday afternoon’s game in Toronto: right-hander Alec Asher.

Asher, 25, fits the mold of many of the other new additions. He’s young, still has promise and the Orioles believe they might have acquired him at the right time in his career.

The move to get Asher didn’t cost much. He was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies for the most nominal fee: a player to be named later or cash. The Phillies moved Asher to clear their Triple-A rotation of clutter as he projected to be a back-end rotation piece in that rotation after struggling during spring training.

The fact that Asher is receiving the opportunity to start Saturday might have more to do with who is facing. The Toronto Blue Jays typically mash against left-handed pitching, which made Asher an easy pick over left-hander Jayson Aquino -- though this Toronto lineup is struggling to hit anyone at this point. Asher posted the most impressive outing of the fifth-starter candidates the first time through the Triple-A Norfolk rotation, and that undoubtedly played a role, too.

But the Orioles have to be intrigued with Asher’s re-invention of himself, how he embraced finesse over power by turning to relaying on his two-seam sinking fastball over his mid-90s four-seamer.

“I kind of changed my pitching style, went from more of a four-seam to more of a two-seam, adding a couple of pitches and tweaking a few things,” Asher said. “I had success, and I’m building on that and trying to progress more and hopefully helping the team win.”

Asher missed most of last season serving an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, and his transition to the sinker might have saved his career. He saw success with it in five big league starts last September, posting a 2.28 ERA in that span. In those five starts, opposing hitters batted just .220 against his sinker, a pitch he threw 41 percent of the time over that stretch.

It was a dramatic contrast to Asher’s first taste of the big leagues in 2015. He threw his four-seam fastball nearly 37 percent of the time in seven major league starts and it translated to a 9.31 ERA.

Even though Asher’s strikeout totals went down after turning to the sinker, so did his walk rate. He allowed fewer hits and was better at keeping opponents in the ballpark.

It worked in that five-start stretch in September, and now Asher is eager to do the same with his new organization.

“I made [the switch] after my first stint in the big leagues and I kind of worked on them all last year throughout the season and I think it definitely changed for the better,” Asher said. “It was kind of between me and some of the pitching staff with the Phillies. We worked together and decided how we could get better and progress.”

Schmuck: Jackie Robinson and the final straw that persuaded baseball to honor him

Peter Schmuck

The Baltimore Sun

There is no reason to wonder why Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson Day every April 15.

Robinson's place in baseball history is well-known and rightfully revered. He stood up against the institutionalized hatred of the Jim Crow era to open the major leagues to African-Americans and soften the heart of a nation steeped in racism.

The only thing to wonder about on the 70th anniversary of Robinson's debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers is why it took MLB more than a half-century to fully recognize his sacrifice and achievement.

Or why we owe former Dodgers general manager Al Campanis an ironic debt of gratitude for forcing the game to take a hard look in the mirror at its inability to fully assimilate African-Americans and other minorities at every level of the industry.

It was Campanis' stumbling interview on ABC's "Nightline" with Ted Koppel in 1987 that laid bare baseball's patronizing attitude toward blacks and forced the sport to begin taking the concept of equal opportunity more seriously. There is still plenty of room for improvement in that area, but Campanis inadvertently drew back the curtain and confirmed for the rest of society what African-Americans already knew.

The "Nightline" interview was part of a show that was intended to recognize the 40th anniversary of Robinson's groundbreaking first major league game and examine his legacy. Instead, it reignited the conversation about race and inequality in professional sports.

Ten years later, baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced on the 50th anniversary of Robinson's debut that his No. 42 would be retired throughout baseball. But it would be an additional seven years before Selig designated April 15 as the perennial "Jackie Robinson Day" to be celebrated by all major league franchises.

Obviously, the issues of race and prejudice do not lend themselves to easy answers or simple solutions, and even the role that Campanis played in delivering a shock to baseball's exclusionary front-office hiring practices illustrates the complexity of those issues.

Campanis and Jackie Robinson were close friends until Robinson's death from a heart attack in 1972, their friendship dating to their days as Dodgers minor leaguers in Montreal in 1946. Campanis volunteered to room with Robinson at a time when other teammates were drawing up petitions to try to keep him out of the majors. Campanis also tutored Robinson on how to protect himself when opposing players tried to spike him, which happened more often because he was black.

Yet there was little question that the comments of the 70-year-old Campanis on "Nightline" reflected archaic stereotypes about the intelligence and capabilities of African-Americans. He resigned shortly after the interview and died 11 years later, actually taking some solace in the fact that his disgrace led to some racial progress in baseball.

While MLB has made progress in its hiring practices, it has lost ground over the past generation in its ability to attract African-American athletes to the sport. The year before the Campanis controversy, 18 percent of major league players were African-American according to a study produced by the Society for American Baseball Research. Last year, only 6.7 percent of the players in the majors were African-Americans.

For a variety of reasons — some societal, some preferential — young black athletes have gravitated more toward basketball and football over the past 30 years as both the NBA and NFL have overtaken baseball in popularity in the African-American community.

Major League Baseball is attempting to reverse that trend by building and upgrading youth baseball facilities in urban areas around the country through its RBI program (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) and enlisting popular players such as Orioles center fielder Adam Jones to act as ambassadors for the sport in their communities.

MLB also is attempting to make the game more attractive to American youth in general with its effort to speed up games by reducing gaps in the action.

Still, it's important to celebrate "Jackie Robinson Day" as both a tribute to a great American and a continuing reminder of a time when the game disgraced itself by keeping a large segment of our population from taking part in something that billed itself as the national pastime.
