1. Open the hood and remove the factory grille mounted weatherstrip attached to the passenger side of the weatherstrip. Pull the weather strip back to release it from the mounting hooks. Carefully raise the vehicle on a lift or use a jack and jack stands. IMPORTANT: The use of jack stands is a must! Do not rely on the jack to support the vehicle. If the jack fails, serious injury or death could occur.

2. Remove the torx T-15 screws securing the top edge of the bumper cover to the support.

TOOLS REQUIRED Automotive grade masking tape, nylon clip release tool, large flat blade screwdriver,T-15 torx tool, “Torx Plus” bit set, 7mm, 9mm and 10mm sockets and ratchet, 1/8”,1/4”, 5/16” & 9/32” drill bits, electric drill, plastic squeegee, razor blade or X-Actoknife, #2 and #0 phillips screwdrivers.

Upper Replacement and Lower Overlay Grilles

3. Remove the eight (8) factory torx T-15 screws (where shown, four (4) per side) securing the front wheel well liners to the bumper cover.

4. Remove the three (3) 7mm hex head screws securing each inner fender liner to the lower edge of the bumper cover. Remove the three (3) 7mm hex head screws securing the front wheel air flow diverters to the wheel well liners and remove the diverters.

6. Once the bolts are removed, remove the plastic supports from the vehicle.

5. Pull back on the wheel well liners and remove the 7mm hex screws (one each side) retaining the lower portion of the painted bumper cover to the plastic supports.

9. Pull back on the wheel well liners and remove the 7mm hex screws (one each side) retaining the painted bumper cover to the front fenders.

10. Apply protective masking tape to the bumper cover and front fenders where they meet and around the openings for the head lights.


7. Reach up from inside the wheel well on the driver and passenger side to disconnect the side marker lights.

8. Reach behind the front wheel arch mouldings and press out on the mounting clips while lightly pulling out on the factory wheel arch mouldings to release them from the front bumper cover. Continue across the top of the front wheel openings on the front fenders to allow adequate space for bumper cover removal.

12. Continue to pull out on the bumper cover to release it from around the headlights.

13. Lift up on the bumper cover weatherstrip on each end and remove the plastic push fastener retaining the top of the bumper cover to the support panel. Once the push fasteners have been removed, have an assistant help you lift up and pull forward on the bumper cover and pull it out far enough to access the wire harness electrical connector on the lower passenger side.

14. Push down on the red locking clip then rotate the white portion of the connector down to seperate the electrical connector.


15. With the help of an assistant, place the bumper cover onto a clean, padded work surface. For vehicles recieving a lower grille: Use a 1/4” drill bit, held at an angle and drill through the rivet heads retaining the front license plate bracket onto the bumper cover (if equipped). Save the bracket for reinstallation.

16.Apply additional masking tape to protect the paint finish during the factory grille removal / E&G grille installation procedure.

11. Once the tape has been applied, pull out on the bumper cover to release it from the mounting channel on the front fenders.

17. With the help of an assistant, turn the bumper cover over and place it face down onto the clean, padded work surface. Remove the styrofoam bumper filler by pressing on the mounting clips and lifting the filler staight up (save for reinstallation).

18. Unclip the factory wire harness running along the bottom of the factory grille.

19. Drill out the factory aluminum rivets securing the top edge of the bumper cover to the factory grille with a 3/16” drill bit. As soon as the rivet head is seperates from the rivet body, stop drilling.

20. Use a flat blade screwdriver to unclip the sides and the bottom of the factory grille from the bumper cover.

21. Pull up on the grille as the clips release and the grille will seperate from the bumper cover. Place the factory grille onto a clean, padded work surface for disassembly.

22. Using a small flat blade screwdriver, remove the factory emblem by releasing the mounting clips then push the emblem straight out. Note: If the factory grille is equipped with “Surround Vision”, remove the camera using a “Torx Plus” tool and save it for installation onto the mesh grille.

24. Remove the factory weatherstrip from across the top of the factory grille and save it for installation onto the E&G grille.

26.Align the supplied side retaining brackets (left and right) with the sides of the bumper cover and grille. Install the supplied stainless steel flat washers onto the #10-24 stainless steel bolts, pass them through the openings in the grille, bumper cover and retaining brackets. Install the supplied stainless steel washers and #10-24 ESNA nuts then hand tighten only at this time.

25. Align the E&G grille into place, making sure it is perfectly centered in the factory grille opening. Install the supplied stainless steel flat washers onto the #10-24 x 3/4” stainless steel bolts, pass them through the openings in the grille and bumper cover and install the supplied large black plastic washers and #10-24 ESNA nuts. Hand tighten only at this time.

27.Once the grille is prefectly centered and the mounting tabs on the ends of the top mounting plate are underneath the bumper cover, tighten the mounting hardware. Use the supplied black cable ties to secure the factory wire harness unclipped in Step 18 to the bumper cover grille mounting tabs (see closeup insert).

23.Remove the remaining plastic push fasteners from the top outer corners of the bumper cover. Reinstall them back into the rubber weatherstrip.

28. Install the supplied emblem mounting bezel, making sure it lines up with the opening in the mesh. Use the supplied bezel retainers, rectangular mesh retainers and #8-32 ESNA half nuts to secure. Install the factory emblem into the bezel by snapping it into place.

34.Once the bumper cover is flush with the grille frame, install the supplied #8 x 1/2” black truss head screws through the bumper cover and into the top mounting plate. This will secure the top corners of the bumper cover to the E&G grille.

33. Reinstall the styrofoam bumper filler removed in Step 17 (not shown). Reconnect the electrical connector from Step 14 (not shown). Align the mesh grille / bumper cover back onto the vehicle with the help of an assistant, reversing Steps 1 through 13. Leave the upper torx screws loose enough to adjust the grille depth.

32.Use flat or semi-gloss black paint to black out anything that would be visible through the mesh grille sections. Note: The bumper rein- forcement will be covered by the styrofoam bumper filler.

31. Drill a 1/8” hole through the marks made in the previous step then enlarge the holes to 5/16”. Align the lower mesh grille assembly into the lower grille opening and install the supplied large black plastic washers and #8-32 ESNA half nuts onto the mounting studs (not shown) and tighten until the grille is snug against the factory grille (standard lower shown, Adaptive Cruise similar).

30. Trim the closed ends from the preinstalled black cap plugs on the lower mesh grille assembly and press them down over the bottom mounting studs only. Remove the caps from the upper studs. Cut out and align the lower hole location template (parts list section of this manual) into the lower outer corners of the factory lower grille insert and use an awl or similar pointed tool to mark the hole locations for the following hole drilling procedure (standard lower shown, Adaptive Cruise lower similar).

29. For Surround Vision equipped vehicles: Remove the camera from the factory mounting bracket and install it onto the supplied mounting bracket using the factory #0 phillips screws. Install the supplied emblem/camera mounting bezel, making sure it lines up with the opening in the mesh. Use the supplied bezel retainers, rectangular mesh retainer, camera mounting bracket and #8-32 ESNA half nuts to secure. Snap the factory emblem into the bezel to secure it into place.


37. Install the supplied plastic push fasteners to secure the front license plate bracket to the bumper cover.38. Remove all protective masking tape to finish.

36. Enlarge the mounting holes in the bumper cover and front tag bracket using a 9/32” drill bit.

35. Carefully close the hood to check for proper hood to grille clear- ance. The grille should be flush or protuding no more than 1/16” from the edge of the hood and have approximately a 1/4” gap. Push or pull the grille into proper alignment, open the hood and tighten the upper torx srews to secure. Install the factory weatherstrip onto the E&G top mounting plate by pressing the push fasteners into the mounting holes (not shown).

31. Drill a 1/16” hole through the center of the mesh opening closest to the outer lower corners. Install the supplied 4 way mesh retainers and #4 x 1-1/2” black pan head screws to hold the outer corners tightly against the lower factory grille. Do not overtighten the screws or you will strip out the holes in the factory grille. Use long nosed pliers to crip the ends of the 4-way mesh retainers around the wire mesh.

30. Trim the closed ends from the preinstalled black cap plugs on the lower mesh grille assembly and press them down over the bottom mounting studs only. Remove the caps from the remaining studs. Align the lower mesh grille assembly into the lower grille opening and install the supplied large black plastic washers and #8-32 ESNA half nuts onto the mounting studs (not shown) and tighten until the grille is snug against the factory grille (standard lower shown, Adaptive Cruise similar).

Technical update bulletinfor all 2017 Cadillac XT5 fine mesh lower grilles

The additional hardware included with this technical update bulletinconsists of two (2) 4-way mesh retainers (black or chrome depending on the type of mesh in the installation) and two (2) #4 x 1-1/2” black

pan head screws.

These steps replace the ones currently depicted in the instruction manual.
