MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Thank you for supporting Melanoma March and helping to end melanoma. I know for many of you Melanoma March is your chance to remember loved ones lost to melanoma, while also supporting our dedicated researchers and raising awareness about melanoma. We are extremely grateful for your support, participation and continued bond with Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA).

Since 2012, Melanoma March has raised more than $2.4 million towards vital research. This research is making a life-changing difference. For instance, the one-year survival rate for patients with advanced melanoma has improved from 25% in 2011 to 75% now, as a result of research break-throughs. The second-year rate has gone from less than 15% to over 50%.

With the introduction of our new initiative, Move for Melanoma, we hope to raise even more funds and spread our message even wider. But we couldn’t do this without you and your community of supporters.

Inside this booklet, you will find some ideas to help you with your final fundraising push. We’ve also included some important sun safety tips to help protect yourself against the sun at all times.

I wish you a successful and enjoyable Melanoma March. Thank you most sincerely for supporting our campaign and MIA.

WHERE THE FUNDS GO

A National Register: Making the Greatest Difference to the Greatest Number of People Melanoma March connects people affected by melanoma around the country, united together by marching to raise awareness and funds for research. In contrast, however, the clinical stories of melanoma patients’ treatment pathways and health outcomes are not currently linked in Australia. If they were, GPs, specialists and clinics across the country would be able to learn from this very valuable comparative data pool and benchmark the way they treat melanoma so that every patient can receive the best possible standard of care. The way to achieve this is through a national melanoma register. In 2016, the funds raised by Melanoma March enabled us to begin building this vital network, and funds raised this year will ensure the national register is rolled out and equipped to capture this important data. This will enable the sharing and transfer of knowledge. This is a collaborative, national effort to record, monitor and improve the quality of care for every melanoma patient. We need your help to help make this happen.

Our recent projects funded by Melanoma March:2016 - Big Data for Melanoma: 2015 - Australian PDX Melanoma Project: 2014 - The Australian Brain Collaboration

This project aims to map and track melanoma care through a new national register, so we ensure anyone treating melanoma, anywhere in Australia, has access to the tools and information that will deliver the best care.

Through the development of laboratory models of melanoma cells, this project aims to unravel melanoma’s genetic and biological secrets and help us understand why patients respond differently to treatments.

This project is a ground-breaking clinical trial across four melanoma centres in Australia that compares the use of various immunotherapies in patients with melanoma that has spread to their brain. The study is showing promising early findings, with patients who once were given just months to live now surviving longer than a year.

Established in 2012 in Sydney, the inaugural Melanoma March was initially a local event to honour those who had died from melanoma, while also providing an opportunity to raise vital funds and awareness.

The event quickly grew, becoming a national initiative of MIA and the major annual awareness and fundraising campaign to support ongoing melanoma research.

The campaign has continued to grow year-on-year and is now a collaborative effort between MIA, melanomaWA, Australian Melanoma Research Foundation and Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc. giving the campaign a truly national reach.

Food and drinks will also be available at the event. You may wish to bring a camera to capture the day or a poster to hon-our a loved one you are marching for. In the case of bad weather, make sure you bring wet weather gear and/or a change of clothes.

FUNDRAISING TIPS & TOOLS

THE MORE FUNDS WE RAISE, THE CLOSER WE ARE TO FINDING A CURE!

TRY THESE TOP TIPS TO BOOST YOUR FUNDRAISING:

Hopefully you have already told your family and friends about your participation and asked for donations. Typically, the final few weeks of a campaign are when most people choose to donate. If you haven’t yet shared your fundraising page with friends, take a few minutes to write a personal Facebook post or email encouraging them to donate - remember to include a link to your fundraising page.

1. Asking your employer to match the amount you raise dollar-for-dollar.

2. Hold a morning tea or cake sale with all proceeds going to Melanoma March.

3. Put the link to your fundraising page (and a short summary of what you’re doing) in your email signature.

4. Create a countdown towards your target and the event date to create a sense of urgency in reaching your goal.

5. Take photos at your local Melanoma March and post them on your Facebook page to say thank you to all your supporters. This might encourage others to give even after you’ve completed the event.Don’t forget to use the hashtag #MelanomaMarch and share your photos with us!

With Melanoma March just around the corner, now is the perfect time to make that final push towards reaching your target - or perhaps going even higher!
