YOU CAN.LET’S RETHINK NETWORKING.
WHAT IF...
You could replace overlays with scalable, agile, end-to-end networking at a fraction of the cost?
You could eliminate middleboxes and infuse security, load balancing, and monitoring functions natively across the network?
Network routing provided zero trust security and encryption automatically?
Overlays on top of overlays, tunnels inside tunnels, middleboxes everywhere, and sophisticated
automation and orchestration needed to manage it all; how did networking get so complicated?
You could blame the success of IP networking – the Internet, enterprise networks, and new business models have driven more and different types of traffic than any of us could have imagined.
But let’s be fair. The technologies behind internetworking were never designed to handle today’s business requirements for security, performance, and visibility. We’ve spent the last decade essentially coming up with patches to “fix” fundamental network problem.
First there were middleboxes (mere bumps on the wire). But networks continued to grow and interconnect, both inside and outside of the data center. Middleboxes have taken on a life (and cost) of their own trying to control the flow of packets for better performance, security, reliability, visibility, and so on.
Then add the overlay. Just like middleboxes, another ‘solution’ sitting on top of earlier networking technologies. Soon we had overlays on overlays on overlays — you get the idea. Even with sophisticated software orchestration and coordination, complex systems are inherently unstable and insecure – more so as you scale.
And it’s not like business demands will decrease or slow down.
We say enough already. Death to the overlay — or any other “new” technology — that just layers complexity on top of an old foundation.
