She started with broad edge and Copperplate style scripts such as Carolingian, Uncial, Spencerian, and Batarde, moving on to the many variations. Basic Grant Writing 101Writing a grant is not as simple as writing a letter. Grant writing is essential for preparing eff ective grant proposals, and this course is about acquiring a skill that involves quite a bit of writing. Grant making is not about receiving charity. While most private funders are philanthropic, even they look at grant making as an investment. And like all investors, the funder is looking for a good return. If you have never written grant proposals before, this course will help you get over the initial panic of not knowing where to start. Luke Smith isn’t what you might expect of a stay-at-home dad who coupons. With his tall, tattooed, boisterous personality, he says local friends aff ectionately refer to him as the “Hot-headed Yankee.”

A long-time construction worker, Luke found himself suddenly unemployed with a wife and infant twins when the construction industry fell into derision during the economic downturn. Though it may have seemed like disaster, Luke and his wife, Donna, decided he should work from home, to save the family on childcare expenses and provide an at-home, nurturing environment for their infant twins.

“When I was making a living in construction, my income was going mostly to cover childcare,” a sentiment shared by many parents of young children as the national average for infant childcare is $679 a month per child.

“I still love construction. It’s in my blood,” Luke shares with a grin as he proudly showcases some incredible home-improvements he’s made in and around his home.

Dedication A good couponer must consistently search for coupons, but he/she need not be compulsive.

Organization A good couponer must be able to locate the coupons he/she has cut out. Luke recommends purchasing and organizing a binder.

Register now for Couponing 101 on page 35.

Extreme Couponing

Many improvements showcase extensive pantry storage, coupon inventory, child play areas, and home offi ce machines. “When people see my displays, some say I have a grocery store at home and others tell me they know where they’ll run to if they ever need a safe bomb shelter.”

With so much of the home allocated for pantry storage and inventory, one wonders how much the Smith’s are saving. “Our grocery bill dropped from $800 a month to less than $100. Plus, we use nicer stuff than we did before I started couponing.”

They average a 75% savings on food cost and 100% on toiletries, often receiving money back on toiletries. Moreover, they can be brand loyal if they like a particular product and want to keep using it.

“I love it,” says Luke “because, to me, it’s a game. At the stores, they want to see how much money they can take from me, and I’m fi ghting to keep as much money as I can in my pocket.”

However, Luke cautions that there are, in fact, some attributes required to successfully coupon:

Assertiveness Luke says emphatically, “Couponing isn’t for a mouse.” A good couponer must explain to cashiers, at times, how the coupon system works and ensure that all appropriate discounts are taken.

AttentivenessA good couponer has to pay attention at the register and know how much the groceries should cost once all discounts are taken.

Bees increase pollination and biodiversity which means more fl owers and more fruit and, thereby, more food for mammals, and delicious honey for all.

To aid the bee population, more people need to keep beehives. Starting a hive is easy and fun, with the help of instructor William Cole.

Andrew Odom is a nationally recognized author, speaker, and writer on the subjects of tiny house living, non-traditional living, and the future of American housing. He developed an interest in the tiny house movement through missionary work that naturally drove him into a minimalist lifestyle. He fondly recounts, “My wife, Crystal, and I met as missionaries on the fi eld. We lived out of backpacks and rebelled hard against the American Dream Ethos.”

After a time of service work, they decided to settle down, and having become accustomed to a lifestyle of less, they were committed to continuing in that way of life.

Andrew says, “When we fi rst got married we renovated an old 118 square foot woodworking workshop and lived in that for a little over a year. We had our daughter—talk about getting to know you—and decided we needed a bit more room.”

At that point, they built a 240 square foot micro house on wheels on Andrew’s parents’ homestead in middle Georgia. Thereafter, they relocated it to Lenoir County, North Carolina, where they lived in their tiny home for 26 months. Itching to travel again, Andrew says, “We were feeling to go back to the road, so we sold our tiny house on wheels and bought a more traditional travel trailer. The three of us lived on the road for right at 2 years.”

Asked how this lifestyle of tiny house living has impacted his daughter, now 5 years old, Andrew says, “Tilly Madison would rather be in the same room with us than her room. She doesn’t have a real understanding of personal space when it comes to my room/your room. For her, home is where her backpack is, her stuff ed animals are, and where her Kindle is. She loves her stuff . Don’t get me wrong. But she has a heart to give anything she has to anyone that needs it.”

Today, the Odom family has once again settled down. They now have a two acre homestead in Duplin County, North Carolina and live in a 920 square foot home.

If you’re tiny curious or ready to build, you don’t want to miss Andrew Odom’s workshop on what it means to live with less.
