2017 Gators Track & Field Notes 2 NCAA Indoor Championships

Doubling Down • Seven Division I men are ranked in the top five nationally in multiple events, and three

are Gators--KeAndre Bates (long jump / triple jump), Clayton Brown (high jump / triple jump), Grant Holloway (60 hurdles / long jump).

Bates Sweeps SEC Titles, Riding Wave of Breakout Summer• Junior KeAndre Bates became the 11th man in history to sweep the long jump and

triple jump titles at SEC Indoors, winning with indoor PRs of 8.04 meters (26-4.5) and 16.81 meters (55-2).

• Bates was the only man to win two individual titles at this year’s SEC Indoors, earning him the Cliff Harper Trophy (individual high points scorer).

• Bates is also the sixth Division I man since 2002 to triple jump over 16.80 meters and long jump over 8.00 meters prior to NCAA Indoors. The group includes Gator Greats Marquis Dendy (2015) and Will Claye (2011).

• Bates is currently the only Division I man ranked in the top 10 nationally in both the triple jump (2nd - 16.81m / 55-2) and long jump (3rd - 8.04m / 26-4.5).

• Bates broke out for the Gators at 2016 NCAA Outdoors, finishing top 3 in the triple jump (2nd) and long jump (3rd), joining Christian Taylor (2010) as the only other Gator underclassman since 1990 to score in both horizontal jumps.

• Bates was also the sixth underclassman in history to finish top 3 in both horizontal jumps at NCAA Outdoors, joining Mike Conley (Arkansas, 1983), Pertti Pousi (BYU, 1968), Kent Floerke (Kansas, 1956), George Boone (USC, 1936), Pat Reed (Bradley, 1932).

• Bates went on to top-10 finishes in the long jump (6th) and triple jump (9th) at U.S. Olympic Trials, joining Arkansas’ Mike Conley (1984) and LSU’s Walter Davis (2000) as the only men since 1972 with top-10s in both horizontal jumps as a collegian.

Holloway’s World-Class Versatility • Freshman Grant Holloway leads the nation in the 60 hurdles (7.58) and ranks second

in the long jump (8.05m / 26-5) entering the NCAA Indoor Championships.

• Holloway and two-time Olympic decathlon gold medalist Ashton Eaton are the only two men in the world since 1999 to break 7.75 in the 60 hurdles and indoor long jump 8.05-plus meters--and it took Eaton until 2012, two years after finishing at Oregon, to do it.

• Holloway won the 60 hurdles title and took fifth in the long jump at SEC Indoors, becoming the first man since at least 2001 to score in both those events; he was also the second freshman since 2000 to win the 60 hurdles title--Eddie Lovett, Florida (2011).

• Holloway is the second Division I true freshman since 2002 to break 7.60 in the 60 hurdles, joining collegiate record holder Omar McLeod (7.57, 7.58 at 2014 NCAA In-doors) as the only other man to do it. And he’s the only Division I freshman during that span to break 7.65 prior to NCAA Indoors.

• Since 2002, only eight Division I men broke 7.60 prior to NCAA Indoors. Five won the national title that year, and five are ranked on the collegiate all-time top 10:

◊ Grant Holloway, Florida, 2017 - 7.58◊ Omar McLeod, Arkansas, 2015 - 7.49 (NCAA Champion) -- #1 all-time (7.45)◊ Eddie Lovett, Florida, 2013 - 7.54 (NCAA Champion) -- #4 all-time (7.50)◊ Spencer Adams, Clemson, 2013 - 7.59 (3rd place)◊ Jarret Eaton, Syracuse, 2012 - 7.49 (NCAA Champion) -- #3 all-time◊ Andrew Riley, Illinois, 2012 - 7.53 (4th place) -- t-8th all-time◊ Ronnie Ash, Oklahoma, 2010 - 7.59 (NCAA Champion)◊ Ron Bramlett, Alabama, 2002 - 7.52 (NCAA Champion) -- t-6th all-time

• Holloway is also the sixth Division I true freshman since 2002 to indoor long jump over 8.00m, and three of the others are Gators--Marquis Dendy (8.06m, 2012), KeAndre Bates (8.02m, 2015), Christian Taylor (8.02m, 2009).

• Holloway opened the season with a 32.80 in the 300 meters--the fifth-fastest indoor 300 in history by a man under the age of 20. Only LaShawn Merritt (31.94 on Feb. 12, 2006) and Noah Lyles (31.87, 32.16, 32.67 in 2017) ran faster prior to turning 20.

NEWS & NOTESBrown’s Rare Double• Freshman jumper Clayton Brown is the eighth man since 1999 to qualify for both the

high jump and triple jump.

• Brown holds the nation’s No. 2-ranked high jump clearance (2.25m / 7-4.5) and No. 3-ranked triple jump mark (16.58m / 54-4.75) , making Brown the only collegian since at least 2002 to clear 2.20m and triple jump over 16.30m in the same indoor season.

• Brown is the third Division I true freshman since 2002 to triple jump over 16.50 meters indoors, and the only one to accomplish the feat before NCAA Indoors.

• Both the others won at least one indoor triple jump national title in their career:◊ Christian Taylor, 2009 - 16.98m at NCAA Indoors (‘09, ‘10 national champion)◊ Will Claye, Oklahoma, 2009 - 16.80m at NCAA Indoors (‘11 national champ at UF)◊ Clayton Brown, Florida, 2017 - 16.58m

• Brown is the fourth Division I freshman since 2010 to clear 2.25m, joining Mississippi State’s James Harris (‘14 national champion at Florida State), two-time national runner-up Ricky Robertson of Ole Miss, and Kansas State junior Christoff Bryan.

David’s Massive Triple Jump• Sophomore Yanis David triple jumped 13.93 meters (45-8.5) at the Tyson Invitational

(Feb. 11), becoming the third Division I underclassman and seventh Division I woman since 2002 to eclipse 13.90 meters indoors.

• The other six women during that span all won indoor triple jump NCAA titles: Keturah Orji, Georgia (2016), Ciarra Brewer, Florida (2015), Shaneika Thomas, San Diego State (2014), Andrea Gubelle, Kansas (2012-13), Kimblerly Williams, Florida State (2009-11), Erica McLain, Stanford (2007).

• Florida State’s Kimberly Williams (14.03m, 2009), ranked No. 2 all-time, and Georgia’s Keturah Orji (13.98m, 2015; 14.12m, 2016) are the only other underclassmen to surpass 13.90 meters since 2002.

• David took second to Georgia’s Keturah Orji in the triple jump at SEC Indoors this year.

Quarter-Milers at it Again• Sophomore Sharrika Barnett ranks fifth nationally in the 400 meters (52.07), and she is

the fifth SEC underclassman since 2002 to break 52.10 seconds prior to NCAA Indoors.

• Sophomore Kunle Fasasi is the seventh Gator underclassman since 2003 to break 46.05--no other program has more than three such quarter-milers in that time frame.

What If...• If Grant Holloway wins the 60 hurdles title, he will join collegiate record holder Omar

McLeod (Arkansas, 2014) as the only other freshman since 1999 to win the NCAA title.

• If Holloway scores in both the 60 hurdles and long jump, he joins George Mason’s Maurice Wignall (1999-2000) and Houston’s and Tennessee’s Darius Pemberton (1995-96) as the only men to do so since 1994.

• If Clayton Brown scores in both the high jump and triple jump, he will join Boise State’s Ryan Grinnell (2008) as the only other man since 1994 to do so.

• If either Kunle Fasasi or Eric Futch makes the 400 meters final, it will be the 14th consecutive year a Gator qualified for the quarter-mile final at NCAA Indoors--which is the longest active streak by any team in any event--and would tie the fourth-longest streak in any event by any team since 1990.

• If Sharrika Barnett finishes third or higher in the 400 meters final, it will mark the fifth time in UF history a Gator logged a top-three finish in the quarter-mile at NCAA Indoors.

• If AJ McFarland scores in the weight throw, he will be the third Gator in history to do so, joining Jeremy Postin (4th - 2012) and David Triassi (8th - 2013).

• If Lloydricia Cameron scores in the shot put, she will be the first Gator since Mariam Kevkhishvili (1st - 2010) and Keely Medeiros (8th - 2010) to do so.

In 2015, Marquis Dendy became the first Florida Gator to win The Bowerman, track and field’s highest individual honor and the sport’s equivalent to college football’s Heisman Trophy.

Florida’s other two The Bowerman finalists since the award’s inception in 2009 are Christian Taylor (2011) and Tony McQuay (2012).

This watch list is trimmed to 10 semifinalists after the NCAA Outdoor Championships, followed by an announcement of three finalists roughly two weeks later.

The Bowerman is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track and field athletes in the nation. The award is named after Bill Bowerman, legendary former track and field and cross country coach for the University of Oregon and co-founder of NIKE.
