President’s Message

Good Morning Quilters,

Quilters University was a runaway success. I want to thank everyone involved. Who knew we had so many talented members - I did. I have often said I learn so much and get so much inspiration at each meeting. Whether it be show and tell, or watching projects come together at retreats, you are all generous with your talents and it benefits us all. Kathy Nagle, Nadine Duke, Fran Hays, Jeanne Coglianese, Nancy Adams and Dottie Dane thank you for sharing some of your tips and secret. Wendy, you did the candy bag demo so many times, I think you could do it in your sleep. Yesterday I spent the day in my sewing room trying to finish my last retreat project. Thanks to Fran Hays my unsewing was so much faster.

Our challenge due at the February meeting is the "panel challenge." You can use the panel any way you want. Use the whole panel, cut it up, you can use them in new and unexpected ways. Table runners, place mats, children's quilts, the possibilities are endless.

With Thanks to all, Sharon

Wanted: 2017-2018 FQU Board Members

The time has come to start thinking about the 2017 FQU elections. Both of our vice-presidents have advised me that they will not be holding their current office next year. If you are interested in either of these positions, please talk to Ann Clare and Anne Argentieri and get an idea of the position and work involved, then let me know at a meeting or at [email protected]. There will be no wonderful programs without someone to schedule and administer them.

We will also need a new President. Sharon has just advised that she will not be a two term President.

Charm Squares Exchange

It’s a new year and time to pick up the Charm Square Exchange again, now that the holidays are over and things have quieted down ;)

The next exchange will be of six-inch squares of Pastel prints/geometrics/blenders, etc. fabric (Think Spring!)

We currently have eight members in our group, so that’s the number of 6” squares to cut to bring to the February 16 General meeting. (If fewer than 8 participate in February, you might have some duplicates in the collection of assorted Pastels that is returned to you at the March 2 Business meeting.)

If you know of someone who would like to participate, please invite them and let me know so that I can inform the others of a change in our number. On the other hand, if the new year finds you without enough time to participate, please let me know so that the number can be adjusted.

Fairfax  QU  Minutes

January 5, 2017

Meeting was called to order at 10:00.

Guests and new members were welcomed and hostesses who brought refreshments were thanked.

1. President’s Report. President Sharon Rixmann called for approval of the minutes of the November 3, 2016 meeting. Wendy McQuown moved to approve the minutes as presented and they were seconded by Kathy Nagle. The motion passed unanimously.

Sharon reported that the new membership directories have been received and can be picked up today from Jane Brown. She also reported that Shirley Collins’ library has been donated to Fairfax QU. Amy Flenniken will be selling books from those donated, with the proceeds going to support acquisitions to the library.

2. Vice President’s Report. Ann Clare reminded the members that Quilter’s University would be held at the January program meeting. Seven members have volunteered to teach a variety of lessons. February’s program will be mixed media thread painting with Laura Gilmartin. Two workshops are planned, on Thursday and Friday, in order to accommodate the number of members who want to participate. In March, Doreen Johnson will teach appliqué, and April will bring Linda Hahn, with the class topic to be determined.

3. Treasurer’s Report. Joanne Stone reported that the chapter has received reimbursement from Big QU for members who attended the Kaffe Fassett lecture. If you attended and want to receive partial reimbursement, please see Joanne and pick up your check.

4. Big QU January 4, 2017 Board Meeting. Linda Keithley and Kath Heslep reported on changes to the Big QU matrix, which were discussed at the meeting. The main change is that jobs assigned to the chapters will now be for two years, not one, so that chapters have a chance to get proficient at the tasks. Fairfax QU’s current assignment is quilt show volunteers. For 2017 – 2019 it will be the show program and advertisements. Kath noted that Big QU is still in need of a quilt show chairman for next year. The Big QU board voted to pay a $2,000 stipend to the Quilt Show Chairman because the job takes so much time. A member needs to step up and volunteer to be chairman by April 1st in order to shadow the current chairman. In addition, the Big QU vice president has resigned and a replacement needs to be found.

5. Committee Reports.

a.) Auction. Marlene Rosen reported that the fall auction was a success, raising $8,959.

b.) Block of the Month. Jeanne Coglianese reported that a new BOM is starting this month. The chapter will be doing the Moda Be My Neighbor Block of the Week, except on a monthly basis. All of the patterns are free and online. Bobbie Dewees stated that she has a PDF file containing all of the blocks. It will be sent out in a blast to all who are interested.

c.) Challenges. Fran Hayes reminded everyone that the panel challenge is due at the February business meeting. Do something creative with a panel. (Continued on page 5)

Sunshine & Hearts

Our thoughts and continued good wishes have gone to Sarah Moh.

If you know of anyone who would appreciate being remembered, please let Joan Unkel know. If by some chance the person to whom we are sending the card is not listed in either Fairfax's membership directory or that of Quilters Unlimited, please include an address to which the card should be sent.

Fairfax also has an optional program in which members send a block with a heart on it to members that need some sunshine. Background fabric and patterns for members who wish to send a heart block are usually available at meetings. If by some chance they are not, please let Joan know. She will send it to you.

In Case You Haven’t Heard:

New fabric store opens in Alexandria. The Fabric Place Basement is now open at 6660 Richmond Highway (Rte. 1) in Alexandria, in the Beacon Hill shopping center. Betsy Smith and Carol Younce visited it on January 4 and found it to be a great place to spend a winter's morning. It is where the old Minnesota Fabrics used to be, and is next door to a Panera Bread. We got there by taking the Beltway around to the Rte. 1 exit, and then just following Richmond Highway to the store. The store faces the side street, so you have to turn when you see Panera Bread, Famous Dave's and Target, then you will see the store. We liked the airy, light filled store, big bin of buttons, lots of great quilting notions and supplies, good selection of batting and pillow forms, and lots and lots of brand name fabrics. Some of the fabric lines include Andover, Michael Miller, Robert Kaufman, Lizzie Mackay by Blend, Kona, FabriQuilt, Red Rooster and Jinny Beyer. They had a few 60" fabrics from Michael Miller and offer a 10% discount if you finish the bolt. A rainbow of blenders and solids line the back wall, and there are many rows of bolts to explore. If you found something you liked in one section, it is well labeled so you can find your way back later. Leaves, Holidays, polka dots, sports, paisleys, black and white, all have their own signs. Lots of friendly helpers cut our fabrics, and the best of all are the prices- $1.99 for fat quarters, $6.99 for prints, $8.99 for batiks. Their grand opening is Jan 21, so get out of your sewing room and hit the streets; you have things to see! If your talents and interests include Home Dec and sewing clothing, that is all there too. We hope you enjoy a fun new place to shop.

Dear Friends,

Despite over 100 calls and emails to churches, civic groups, relief agencies, and Dollywood, I was unable to send the lovely quilts you donated to Tennessee for the fire victims. People initially were so overwhelmed that they told me they weren't ready to accept quilts. When I called them back later, they stated they could only accept cash donations, they had no space for other donations. I understand Luana Rubin of eQuilter was able to get quilts to people there. I honestly don't know how she did it but hats off to her. I have never had this happen before in the probably 10 disasters I have helped with in the past.

If no one has objections, I will hold onto the 23 quilts until another real need shows up. Hopefully my timing will be better with it.

Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart for your generous donations. Know that you are the best and I keep all of you close in my heart.

The State of the Bees….January 2017

What is a Quilting Bee? A small group, a chapter subset of quilters who band together to learn, sew, and socialize. Bees are alive and well in Fairfax QU! Our current list includes the following Bee names: Tangled Threads; Embellishment; Wannabees; Outside the Block; Scrapbag Ladies; Sew Bee It; Worker Bees; Too Bee or Not Too Bee; Applique Addicts; 30’s Bee, and Red Bee (Redwork- Embroidery Devotees). If you do not see your Bee’s name on this list, please send me an email so we can have a corrected list. On the other hand, if you’d like to join a Bee and meet some awesome quilter friends, send me a message. Many bees meet in homes and are limited in the number of quilters they can accommodate, but some bees are ready and waiting for you to join. Send me an email: Beekeeper Roz Johnson ([email protected])

Weather Advisory

FQU meetings follow the Fairfax School District guidelines. If school is cancelled due to inclement weather, so is FQU; if school is delayed, FQU meets at the normal time.
