WELCOMEA MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIERThe 2017 Generations in Jazz program promises to be a wonderful event for lovers of music, and I welcome performers and visitors from interstate and overseas to Mount Gambier. This spectacular event continues to grow in stature every year, with a highlight of this year’s program being the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra along with US jazz sensation Wycliffe Gordon.

Generations in Jazz provides a valuable opportunity for high school jazz musicians to hone their performance skills in a supportive, professional environment. These students are future stars and will play an important part in Adelaide’s designation as a UNESCO City of Music. I’m proud that the State Government continues to support live music around the State, as well as high calibre institutions such as the James Morrison Academy of Music. I hope the performers and fans alike enjoy all the offerings of this weekend’s impressive program, and wish them all the best for their time in the beautiful South East region.

WELCOME TO GENERATIONS IN JAZZ 2017!With each year at GIJ we always do something ‘bigger’ than before - a bigger name artist, a bigger band, more guests - whatever we think will keep GIJ growing and more exciting each time you visit. Last year we had a ‘double big band’ and there was only one place to go from there - the biggest ‘band’ there is, a symphony orchestra. So, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra joins us this year with a group of stellar guest soloists and a program of music that stretches from the very beginnings of jazz through to fusion and funk.

I’ve been playing a program called the A to Z of Jazz (Armstrong to Zawinul) with orchestras around the world for the last couple of years and it’s been amazing to hear the history of jazz expressed through the sound palette of the symphony. Of course, for GIJ it had to be special, something you couldn’t hear anywhere else - so instead of being the only soloist (the way I’ve done it in Europe and the US), for the first time I’ve collected a group of jazz soloists from around the world to play the various roles, as we go from the swinging music of Louis through Big Band, Bebop, Latin and all the way to Birdland.

Being my 30th year at GIJ, it was also an opportunity to invite back some of the most remarkable guests we’ve had over the years. There’s piano genius Marian Petrescu, award winning brass and vocal sensation Wycliffe Gordon, the ‘Phat’ band creator Gordon Goodwin, former GIJ finalist and now keyboard wiz with Cat Empire Ollie McGill, alumni Mat Jodrell and Ross Irwin - and two very special singers.

Darren Percival was a GIJ finalist back in the very earliest days of the event and has gone on to a career taking him around the globe. He is joined by US jazz vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, winner of the Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and one of the most dynamic singers on the world scene.

As if that isn’t enough, we are also joined by a jazz ensemble from the Juilliard School in New York. They’re here studying at the JM Academy and join with our Honours Ensemble to form a 12-piece band that will blow you away.

As always, no matter what we program, the thing that still makes GIJ such an inspiring event is that so many of you will play this weekend. In my continued travels around the world, I’ve still yet to see anything that celebrates the jazz tradition of ‘passing it on’ like Generations in Jazz.

Keep swinging!

For over 80 years, the ASO has been there to corroborate life and contribute to South Australia’s identity. Today the ASO plays a major role in Adelaide’s cultural and economic vibrancy, and enriches the community through more than 70 world-class performances to more than 90,000 diverse concert goers each season. Each year it extends its audience beyond the concert halls through its Out of the CBD series and regular broadcasts on ABC Classic FM. And the ASO’s comprehensive Learning Series for schools and families symphony directly touches the lives of more than 16,000 children, thereby forging a special connection to music from a young age. In 1998 and 2004 the ASO came to the attention of the international community with its exemplary playing of Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

Delivering diverse and colourful programming with leading international and Australian musicians, it has also enjoyed hugely successful performances with such artists as Ben Folds, Tim Minchin and The Hilltop Hoods. And in 2015, the ASO and The Hilltop Hoods reprised their collaboration to record Drinking From The Sun, Walking Under Stars Restrung. In the spirit of innovation, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra frequently showcases new music and Australian premieres. The ASO has embarked on numerous international tours, including China, Korea, Singapore and Carnegie Hall in New York, and plays a vital role in the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, OzAsia Festival, WOMADelaide, State Opera of South Australia and Australian Ballet.

WITH A REPUTATION FOR VITALITY AND VERSATILITY, THE INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ADELAIDE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IS SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST PERFORMING ARTS ORGANISATION, ESTABLISHED IN 1936.

GORDON GOODWINJAZZMEIA HORN

Jazzmeia Horn is widely considered the hottest young singer on the international jazz scene and one of New York’s ‘rising stars’. Winner of the 2015 Thelonius Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, she earned her degree at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Since then, she has not only appeared at world famous jazz festivals, but just about every famous jazz club in New York City.

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Jazzmeia’s name captures her very essence. Her grandfather is a pastor, and she began singing gospel, soul and R&B in a church choir as a young child. Her natural style sets her apart from many of her peers, with London’s Jazz News describing Jazzmeia as a performer “for whom every word, gesture, and ornament becomes an expression of her total conviction”. Soul singer, Al Jarreau, was another big fan, saying she was “not only a vocalist, but a musician with big ears, and wisdom beyond her years”.

Currently, Jazzmeia is a teaching artist in The NJPAC Well’s Fargo Jazz for Teens Program and Jazz in the Schools Program in Newark, New Jersey. She also leads her dynamic group The Artistry of Jazz Horn, and is thankful for the opportunity to play music professionally.

Four-time Grammy and Emmy award-winning composer, Gordon Goodwin, is the most decorated big band leader in the 21st century. Born in Kansas, Gordon began writing down the music he heard in his head from the age of five. This music didn’t consist of just snippets or melodic lines but entire compositions! When he wrote his first big band chart hit in seventh grade, he captured the attention of music supervisors and producers and his career destiny was sealed.

Gordon Goodwin went on to build a larger-than-life reputation in the music industry for his composing, arranging and performance skills, yet he remains humble when he looks back at where his career has taken him. Since the late 1970s, he has scored dozens of films and television shows - everything from Get Smart to the classic cult film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes). He has also toured the globe with his wildly successful Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, and has conducted world-renowned symphony orchestras in Atlanta, Dallas, Utah, Seattle, Toronto and London.

Ray Charles, Christina Aguilera, Johnny Mathis, Alejandro Fernandez, Patti Austin, Toni Braxton, John Williams, Natalie Cole, David Foster, Sarah Vaughan, Brian McKnight and Quincy Jones are just a few of the artists that Gordon Goodwin has played alongside.

The musician, composer and bandleader says he has achieved success beyond his wildest dreams.

A gifted trombonist, conductor, composer and arranger, Wycliffe Gordon is also one of the world’s foremost music educators, sharing his incredible talent with young musicians and audiences all over the world. His master classes, clinics, workshops, children’s concerts and lectures are held everywhere from elementary schools to universities, and for the past two years, he has been Artist in Residence at the James Morrison Academy of Music in Mount Gambier.

Wycliffe grew up in Waynesboro, Georgia, and was musically influenced from a young age by his father, Lucius Gordon, a classical pianist and teacher. His unique approach is based on the premise that if you can sing something rhythmically, melodically and harmonically through a given exercise, then you can play it or train yourself to play it. This idea is geared toward trombonists, but the concept applies to all instrumentalists.

Wycliffe has worked with many renowned jazz performers of the past and present, and is widely respected for his powerful sound, distinctive techniques and funky performance style. He has made 13 solo albums with the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet and seven co-leader albums, and has won scores of accolades along the way, including being a five-time winner of the Jazz Journalists Association’s Trombonist of the Year Award.

WYCLIFFE GORDON MARIAN PETRESCU

Jazz maestro and Grammy Award-winner, Marian Petrescu, is a Romanian-born jazz pianist extraordinaire hailed by some as “the best jazz pianist in the world”. With his background of solid classical training, dazzling technique and dynamic interpretation, he is a true master of the adventurous world of improvisation, demonstrating effortless control over everything from ragtime to modern jazz.

Marian made his debut at the Pori Jazz festival at the young age of 15, and in 1989, his international reputation was further enhanced when he won the coveted “Martial” solo jazz piano prize in Paris. Presently living in Finland, he has performed with many stars, with his explosive virtuoso playing style attracting widespread applause across Australia, Mexico City, Oslo, Vienna, Paris, and Russia’s Kremlin Classical Piano Festival.

Marian Petrescu’s eclectic style is greatly inspired by 20th century legend Oscar Peterson, and he has has received standing ovations for breathing life back into the wonderful legacy of the Canadian jazz Goliath. When it comes to jazz, Marian will quite simply blow your mind with his tremendous stage presence and peerless technical prowess.

MAT JODRELL

Trumpeter, Mat Jodrell, is one of the most exciting names in jazz today. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Mat’s rise to musical prominence was rapid; by the age of 16, he was playing at Carnegie Hall, and was accepted into the Bachelor of Music program at the WA Academy of Performing Arts. During his studies, Mat won the Bob Wyllie Scholarship for best graduating student, the NFAA Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship (five finalists chosen worldwide), the WA Young Australian of the Year Award, and the James Morrison Scholarship at Generations in Jazz.

Mat spent eight years living and performing in New York City before returning to Australia in 2015 to teach at Mount Gambier’s James Morrison Academy of Music. While living in the US, Mat worked as lecturer at the Juilliard School of Music and also recorded with many ensembles. In addition to performing at famous New York jazz clubs, he appeared at large festivals including the Newport Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and the Detroit Jazz Festival. Mat also performed regularly on Broadway with the shows Hair and After Midnight, and continues to work with legendary singer Paul Anka.

Ollie McGill (The Cat Empire, Jackson Jackson, the Genie, The Conglomerate, The Ollie McGill Trio) had a keen ear for jazz and improvisation from a young age. From the age of 3 he was learning songs off the radio and teaching himself Christmas carols etc. Throughout high school Ollie performed in several acid jazz/funk/soul bands, including Latin a Latin Jazz band with Felix Riebl from the Cat Empire. Fresh out of high school whilst being under the wing of Pianist/educator, Steve Sedergreen, Ollie was playing regularly at Bennetts Lane and Dizzy’s jazz club. Following that, The Cat Empire took off around the globe, performing their own brand of Latin/Jazz/Funk/whatever. Ollie now has a unique perspective of jazz having had a colourful career, travelling around the globe a dizzying amount.

A gifted vocalist with natural talent, Darren has been mesmerising audiences with his astonishing performances during sell-out national tours. The one-time backing singer turned solo star brings his soulful swagger to the Generations in Jazz stage for the first time in 2017.

PAT CORRIGAN

Patrick Corrigan AM is a highly regarded businessman, art collector and philanthropist who has funded many scholarships for visual artists and musicians. In 2000, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his work as a philanthropist and art patron.

Every year, Patrick supports an emerging artist at Generations in Jazz by donating $3500 for the Pat Corrigan Future Finalists Award. His generous support for the event reflects his long-time passion for a style of music he first discovered as a teenager living in Bondi.

“My family had been in a prisoner of war camp for four years, and there was no music at all, so I certainly didn’t know anything about jazz until we moved to Australia and I heard it one morning on the radio,” he says. “I was 13 years old and I was hooked, and I still listen to it now at 84. It’s like a bit of a fix; we have pubs in Sydney playing jazz on a Sunday, and I only have to spend an hour there listening and I’m revitalised.”

ROSS & JENNY BLANCHARD

GENERATIONS IN JAZZ HAS MANY GENEROUS SPONSORS, BUT ROSS AND JENNY BLANCHARD WANTED TO ASSIST THE EVENT FROM A PHILANTHROPIC POINT OF VIEW. OVER THE YEARS, THE BLANCHARDS HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY GENEROUS BENEFACTORS AND SUPPORTERS OF THE IDEOLOGY OF GENERATIONS IN JAZZ. Jenny Blanchard shares the story of their involvement…

“Ross and I met at the Southern Jazz Club in Adelaide in 1973, and we first heard about Generations in Jazz from Leigh and Sally O’Connor when we had lunch with them in Mt Gambier in the late 1980s. Ross was running his own air charter business then, and I was a professional conference organiser, so it was not until 1999 that we were able to attend Generations. Since that time we have thoroughly enjoyed 14 more visits!

James and John Morrison share a love of flying with Ross, and this has fostered a close relationship. We listened as they talked about their ambitions for the future of Generations and saw that we could help them achieve their goals by becoming sponsors.

The first donation was made to assist with administration costs. The second, in 2015, was aimed at the development of young players to give them an early start to their musical careers and a chance at becoming finalists at Generations.

We have fond memories of the early days of our attendance – the arrival of the first band from Queensland who stopped their coach on Wehl Street to ask us where they should go, purchasing our Generations vests which then became uniform for us to wear as part of the amazing volunteer team, getting wet inside marquees due to condensation and heavy rain(!), talking to the finalists on a one-to-one basis and learning what an incredible experience it is for them.

Times have changed, but the spirit lives on and we hope that we still have a few years to come from Adelaide to be part of this great event.”

NAMES BEHIND THE GENERATIONS IN JAZZ PAVILIONS

ED WILSONEd Wilson has been a Generations in Jazz adjudicator for many years, and is also the talent behind scores of music played throughout the Mount Gambier festival, with his arrangements serving as an important thread for young Australian musicians exploring the broader musical culture. Ed is also a highly talented trombonist, and serious music lovers will remember him from his days with the legendary ‘’Daly/Wilson Big Band’’ during the 1970s and early eighties.

JAMES MORRISONJames Morrison was first invited to the Limestone Coast in the late 1980s when ‘Generations in Jazz’ was a brand new concept developed by a small group of people who were passionate about music. In a single weekend, Mount Gambier won him over – James has been involved in every GIJ, with the event’s coveted scholarship program named in his honour. Today, this true virtuoso calls the Blue Lake City home, sharing his gift with students at the James Morrison Academy of Music.

ROSS IRWINRoss Irwin first participated in Generations in Jazz as a school student in 1997, and has continued to be involved in the event ever since. He was nominated as a future finalist, then a scholarship finalist, before becoming an adjudicator for the stage band awards. Now the festival’s Program Director, Ross spends the rest of the year as a globe-trotting composer, singer/songwriter, bandleader, producer and multi-instrumentalist.

A.A. SCOTTThe late Allan Scott and his family have been dedicated and incredibly generous financial supporters of Generations in Jazz over an extensive period, and the ongoing success and growth of GIJ would not have been possible without the Scott family’s enormous commitment to this unique musical concept. The family also recently donated a $100,000 piano to the James Morrison Academy of Music, and it takes pride of place in the Allan Scott room.

RICK ALLERTRick Allert spent several years in Mount Gambier early in his highly successful career as a chartered accountant, and continues to maintain an ongoing interest in the region’s progress. During a corporate career spanning more than four decades, Rick has become one of the most respected business people in Australia and a captain of industry in his home town of Adelaide. In addition to serving as a director on some of the nation’s most powerful boards, Rick has been a former chair of Generations in Jazz, and is now the chair of the James Morrison Academy of Music.

RON EVANSFor the past decade, the Evans family has generously donated the annual $10,000 prize awarded as part of the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship. Their sponsorship recognises the late Ron Evans’ love of jazz, along with his strong desire to encourage and foster musical talent. Ron was an incredible supporter of Generations in Jazz prior to his passing – he applauded the entire concept, and played an important advisory role at both board and administration level.

DON BURROWSDonald “Don” Burrows AO MBE is a veteran Australian jazz and swing musician who has been twice named one of Australia’s living national treasures. A multi-instrumentalist who is best known for playing the clarinet, but also the saxophone and flute, he has shared the stage with world-renowned musicians including Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Nat King Cole. Don is best known for his work with the Don Burrows Quartet, and he also helped to establish the Jazz Studies course at the NSW Conservatorium. For his contribution to the arts, Don had a supper club named for him at The Regent Hotel in Sydney, and now…a Generations in Jazz pavilion!
