TO DOWNTOWN GRAND JUNCTIONDowntown Grand Junction is the historic center of the city, beloved by locals and visitors alike. Once a wide thoroughfare with little charm, Grand Junction’s Downtown was transformed in 1962 when the community came together with great vision to turn Main Street into the serpentine, tree-lined street it is today. This project—called Operation Foresight—not only won Grand Junction the “All-America City” award that same year, it gave us the beautiful, shaded streets we enjoy today.

The preeminent gathering space for the community, Downtown is home to a variety of locally-owned shops, a vast array of services, excellent cultural venues, a signature public art collection and some of the best restaurants the Grand Valley has to offer.

Downtown’s art-filled streets are home to many free public events throughout the year including the annual Music Festival (May 19-21), the Downtown Farmers Market every Thursday evening (June 22-Sept. 14), the Downtown Art Festival (October 7 & 8) and a full schedule of special events during the holidays.

Whether you’re visiting Downtown for the first time or the 100th, be sure you enjoy all that we have to offer. You will not be disappointed!

It all started with Oscar winning screenwriter Dalton Trumbo whose first novel in 1935 “Eclipse”, a thinly veiled story about Grand Junction (Shale City), shocked and disturbed local civic leaders.

In 2005 a loosely organized group of volunteers, later referred to as “The Dalton Gang” decided to reprint the book as a fundraiser for Mesa County Library. That effort raised over $65,000. The Dalton Gang then commissioned and unveiled a sculpture of Trumbo writing in his tub in 2005 (the same year the city of Grand Junction unveiled a sculpture of founder George A. Crawford for the town’s 125th birthday).

These sculptures led to the idea that larger than life “story sculptures” of historic local figures integrated into the “Art on the Corner” collection would be a great way to share the history of Grand Junction with locals and visitors alike. The Dalton Gang morphed into The Legends of The Grand Valley Committee and over 13 years commissioned and unveiled a total of nine sculptures in the downtown area.

DOWNTOWN

TAKE A WALKING TOURStart at Seventh & Main Street, where Trumbo sits in front of the Avalon Theatre. Across the street in the same block you will find former Daily Sentinel publishers Walter Walker (with son Preston on his shoulders), and Sister Mary Balbina Farrell, who directed the building of the original St. Mary’s Hospital.

On the southeast corner of Seventh & Main you will find Enstrom Candies founders, Chet & Vernie Enstrom.

In the walkway at 614 Main you will find pioneer broadcaster Rex Howell and an 8’x36’ mural depicting the history of the valley.

Philanthropist, banker, retailer and civic leader William Moyer is in front of Alpine Bank at 225 North Fifth Street (where he helped create the first YMCA).

Operation Foresight leaders Joe Lacy, Dale Hollingsworth and Leland Schmidt and original photos of Main Street (before its renovation as a Downtown Shopping Park) are featured in the sculpture at Third & Main Street.

Look for Colorado National Monument founder John Otto and his horse Rowdy just west in the 200 block of Main.

Two blocks further at Spruce and West Main are the four Prinster brothers, founders and developers of City Market and outstanding civic leaders.

Downtown Grand Junction is an art lover’s paradise, with more than a dozen galleries in an eight-block radius.

Shop for your collection or browse just for fun — Downtown Grand Junction’s fine arts community is thriving.

Expect to find unique prints, art classes, photography, paintings, sculpture, body art, garden art and more, with a variety of price points.

Grand Valley artists additionally display their work in coffee shops, book stores, restaurants and retail stores. Pop in to see original art pieces where you’d least expect them.

The historic Avalon Theatre is truly the cornerstone of beautiful downtown Grand Junction. In 1923, the Avalon Theatre was built and designed for live performances and film. Ninety-four years later the Avalon continues to be a destination for nationally known performers, home to local arts groups, and holds the largest movie screen on the Western Slope.

The First Phase of renovation to the Avalon Theatre took place in 2014 and improved the entire theatre, as well as expanded as an event center. The Avalon continues to evolve into a superior venue for all types of events. The next step for the Avalon is to complete Encore Hall which has the ability to be a smaller concert venue, movie theatre, event room, meeting space, and class room – a true multi-purpose room. To help complete Encore Hall in 2017, visit avalontheatrefoundation.org.

The Avalon Theatre is available for private events, weddings, and parties. To reserve the Avalon or view movie and show listings visit tworiversconvention.com/avalon. The Avalon is a beautiful venue designed for community benefit.

The area of what would become Grand Junction in September 1881 was a barren place when George Crawford and Richard Mobley crossed the river near what is now the 5th Street Bridge.

This was a place that the Ute Tribe, Spanish explorers and Mormon settlers would just pass through on their way to someplace else. It took the former governor of Kansas, George Crawford, with his friend, former Kansas state representative, Richard Mobley, to see the vision of what this piece of desert could become.

On Sept. 26, 1881, Crawford and Mobley built a cabin and started to lay out a town. Crawford named two streets after his half-brother, Allison White, and his business partner, Henry E. Rood. Both lived back east and never came to Grand Junction. During this time Crawford also named the promontory to the east of the valley, Mount Garfield, after his friend, President James Garfield, who had been assassinated.

Crawford’s friend, J. Clayton Nichols, asked why George was laying out a whole town when the barren area couldn’t produce anything but “greasewood and horned toads,” and would be nothing more than a trading post for Indians. Crawford replied to his friend: “Oh Clayte, the railroad will come and this will be a big town someday.”

Within a year Grand Junction was a wide-open town with saloons

complete with gamblers and short-order restaurants. Everything was open 24 hours a day and Main Street was roped off for horse racing. Crawford began encouraging different types of businesses and families to come to the valley. His confidence in the “Western Slope Empire” brought families to town and inspired others to stay around.

Soon the Grand Junction News set up shop; the railroad came along with churches and schools; an opera house was built; water was drawn from the river for irrigation and over 1,000 trees were planted. More young ladies were moving to town and the men started to “spruce up;” Grand Junction became what George Crawford thought it would become, “The Queen of the Western Slope.”

Today Grand Junction is the largest town in the region, with its eye on the future but still honoring its western past.

— Garry W. Brewer, Downtown Historian

Downtown Grand Junction’s Museum of the West tells the tale of the American West, with a focus on western Colorado. The Museum of the West is part of the Museums of Western Colorado which is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

Located at 462 Ute Avenue, the Museum of the West has an impressive western Americana collection including firearms that once belonged to colorful characters like Butch Cassidy, Kid Curry, Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley.

The museum also displays 1,000-year-old Native American pottery, along with Ute Indian artifacts from the late 1800s.

“We are extremely proud that the Museum of the West is a part of Grand Junction’s Downtown,” said Peter Booth, its executive director. “It’s an honor to be the caretaker of the stories that tell the origin and development of our community.”

Visitors will find glimpses of those early settlements in the form of a recreated pioneer town, a stagecoach, and a model of a full-size uranium mine. A rotating series of changing exhibits is part of the experience as well

Also part of the Museum of Western Colorado family is the Cross Orchards Historic Site and Fruita’s Dinosaur Journey Museum.

Grand Junction’s high-desert climate provides for a wide array of recreational activities — fishing, hiking, cycling, climbing, plus downhill and Nordic skiing in winter.

For visiting mountain bikers and road cyclists, it additionally serves as a main access point to world-class single track and road riding.

Stop by any of several Downtown bike shops and they’ll help you find your way. [See Business Directory starting on page 16.]

FOR MOUNTAIN BIKERS:

Explore Grand Junction’s Lunch Loops near the Colorado National

Monument, Fruita’s Kokopelli Trail off Exit 15, and Palisade’s Horse Mountain and Palisade Rim Trail.

FOR ROAD RIDERS:

Ride over the Colorado National Monument on the scenic Rim Rock Drive. It’s a lung buster climbing up to Rim Rock with rolling hills along the top. This is probably one of the most popular routes for intermediate and advanced riders, and it’s one of the most beautiful.

FOR CRUISERS:

Try the Riverfront Trail, a paved, wide walkway along the Colorado River from Clifton to Fruita.
