ABOUT THE HOSTSDallas Derby Devils

Founded in 2004, and bouting in May 2005, the Dallas Derby Devils brought flat track roller derby to the DFW metroplex. As a skater-owned, DIY (Do It Yourself) nonprofit organization, and a member league of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), our mission is to empower ourselves by working together on and off the track. We take time to give back to our community through charitable contributions, local sponsorship programs, and by cooperating and collaborating with other roller derby leagues worldwide. We are so excited to have you here and hope you enjoy your stay.

BY AIR Irving is accessed via two major airports. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is located just 8.3 miles from the venue. Our other major airport is Dallas Love Field (DAL), which is a major hub for Southwest Airlines. Love Field is located 8.4 miles from the venue. You can’t go wrong with either airport.

BY DART LIGHT RAIL AND BUSDallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is the public transportation provider for the city of Irving. DART services 12 counties with a combination of bus, light rail, and commuter rail services. Buses operate every 30 minutes during peak hours, every 60 minutes during off-peak hours, and provide transportation from the area’s airports. Find route maps, fares, and information about DART at DART.org

The Trinity Railway Express connects Dallas, Fort Worth, DFW Airport, and Irving South and runs seven days a week, though it requires taxi service from the station to the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas. The Orange Line of the DART Light Rail Network connects the Las Colinas Urban Center and the Irving Convention Center with DFW Airport, Dallas (including Love Field Airport), and surrounding cities. For information regarding Orange Line Schedule: www.dart.org/riding/dartrailorangeline.asp

BY AMTRAKDFW is accessible by Amtrak with multiple stations, however the Dallas (DAL) Union Station is the closest to the venue in Irving. The Union Station address is 400 S Houston St, Dallas, TX 75202. Union Station also houses DART and Trinity Railway Express stops.

BY GREYHOUND BUSDFW has several Greyhound stations around the metroplex. Dallas Westmoreland is the station recommended due to its proximity to Irving. The address of the Dallas Westmoreland Greyhound stations is 627 N Westmoreland Ave, Dallas, TX, 75211.

Irving Convention Center500 W Las Colinas BlvdIrving, TX 75039(972) 252-7476www.irvingconventioncenter.com/

The Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas represents the innovative future of meetings and events. With almost 100,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space, the building’s unique architecture, vertical design, and interior finishes create a new niche in the marketplace. And the opportunities don’t stop at the building’s walls. Ideally situated on 40 acres in the heart of Irving’s Las Colinas Urban Center, the convention center is just the first phase of a mixed-use entertainment district that will include a 6000-person capacity performance venue and unique dining and shopping.

SIGN IN & LACE UP

REGISTRATIONRegistration will be at the Holiday Inn Express Convention Center on Thursday, September 21, 2017, from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, at which time skaters, officials, and other credentialed participants will complete required paperwork and receive their tournament credentials.

Pre-Tournament Meeting will be at the Holiday Inn Express Convention Center on Thursday at 8:00 PM local time (US Central) with Officials Meeting immediately following.

Credentials must be worn at all times in order to obtain access to the venue and to participant-only areas. There is a $30 fee to replace lost or stolen credentials.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCEThe WFTDA as tournament host provides trained, certified emergency medical responders should an injury occur on the track. These staff may be a contracted service, venue provided, volunteers, and and/or team/league professionals. Only the staffed responders working their current shift may go onto the track or players’ benches to access or treat a skater or official. Once removed from the playing area, if the skater or official wishes to use their own medical provider, the individual may refuse additional treatment.

Team/League medical staff seeking to treat their skaters on the track or bench must be part of, and sit with, the scheduled medical crew. For information on how to volunteer for the safety staff, please let your team’s wrangler know so that they can notify the Safety Liaison. PLEASE NOTE: NOT ALL VENUES AND CONTRACTS PERMIT THE USE OF ADDITIONAL OR VOLUNTEER MEDICAL STAFF. The opportunity to participate in this capacity is not guaranteed and when not part of the prearranged schedule will not be permitted.

TEAM ROOMSTeam areas will be based on the tournament scheduled and assigned accordingly.

TRACK FLOOR, WARM-UP SPACE, AND WARM-UP TIMES The venue will be open by 8:00 AM Friday morning for skaters and officials who wish to test the floor. The track floor is polished concrete.

Anita Riot, from Dallas, says this about the floor:“The floor is polished concrete. A little stickier than the Rollercon floor, with less cracks and the seams are much smaller. I used xxfirm Atom Booms (97-ish) and my plow stops had a good slide but nothing extreme. When I mixed in some firms (90-ish) I had absolutely no slide. So any middleweight skaters will be fine with 93-95a wheels or xfirm Booms.”

There will be one track in the venue. All competition and warm-ups will occur here. Teams will have designated warm up times on the games track during the half time of the game prior to their own.

THINGS TO DO IN DALLASThe DFW metroplex has tons of fun things to offer outside of awesome derby. DFW and beyond encompasses 32 rich and diverse counties that offer just about anything you could want from bustling urban centers to historic downtown squares. Enjoy world-class museums, shopping venues, live entertainment, amusements parks, and more! We selected Irving as the tournament city because it’s right smack dab in the middle of everything.

Just a brief 7 minute walk from the Irving Convention Center, the Irving Music Factory is DFW’s newest entertainment destination. Slated to open in Fall 2017, this urban center was designed to be an all-in-one dining and entertainment destination for DFW. Not only will it have a variety of dining and entertainment options, but it will also host a variety of special events and concerts.

If you’re a thrill seeking roller coaster junkie, you are a short 20 minute drive from Six Flags Over Texas. Six Flags amusement park features more than 100 thrilling rides, shows, and attractions including the adrenaline-filled Titan, Mr Freeze: Reverse Blast, and the New Texas Giant roller coasters. Don’t forget to check out neighboring Hurricane Harbor water park, the perfect destination for a little fun in the sun.

If you have a day to explore, consider venturing west to Fort Worth. Fort Worth is the home to the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. This living museum pays tribute to Fort Worth’s Wild West heyday with daily cattle drives and plenty of restaurants serving up cowboy cuisine. Guided walking or Segway tours are available or hop a ride on a stage coach! While you’re there, also check out the Stockyards Museum, Stockyards Station, Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, Cowtown Cattlepen Maze, or ride on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. On your way out don’t forget to stop by Billy Bob’s Texas - the World’s Largest Honky Tonk!

If you love gorgeous plants, meticulous landscaping, and the scent of flowers in the air, then you are in for a treat. The metroplex has multiple beautiful botanical gardens. The Fort Worth Botanic Garden has a Japanese garden that is a must see! Dallas has so many gardens you could spend an entire day looking at the beauty of nature.

More of a history buff? Take a trip over to the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. The museum chronicles the assassination and legacy of US President John F. Kennedy through artifacts, photos, and documentary films. See where evidence was found and hear eyewitness accounts.

If art is more your calling, consider visiting the Kimbell Art Museum. Despite its modest size, it should not be underestimated. This museum has a well-earned reputation as one of the top small museums in the world. The facility itself is a work of art. In addition, the permanent collection houses works that span history and features artists ranging from El Greco and Rembrandt to Monet and Picasso.

If there’s one thing the people of Dallas and Fort Worth love (other than derby), it’s football. So a stop by the home of the Dallas Cowboys is necessary for a glimpse into the local culture. You can visit “America’s Team” at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. This is the largest domed stadium in the country with an 80,000 fan capacity. Tours are available of the venue, which also houses an extensive collection of art.

There are so many great places to eat, drink, and play make sure you to ask your team wrangler for more information on what’s available in the DFDub!
