It is a source of continual pleasure to me to work with the wonderful, passionate musicians of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Every time we play together, I marvel at the thrilling musicality they bring to everything we perform. I see people of extraordinary talent working together to bring the magic of music to everyone.

Whether it’s in the concert hall, touring regional NSW, performing in concerts for school students, working with teachers to develop music teaching skills for the classroom, or working with Australian composers to bring new works to the stage, the musicians of the SSO have a commitment and passion that is truly inspirational.

I speak for all the musicians in saying that it’s your enjoyment that drives us as artists and we’ve crafted a season we hope will stimulate, inspire and enchant you and your students.

Music is all around us. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra connects with audiences and musicians everywhere, starting here in our home state of New South Wales. Introducing children to the fascinating and awesome complexity of sound that is an orchestra, we support teachers and inspire learning around Australia as we engage the next generation of professional musicians and music lovers. This year we remodel our extensive resources to create online access for teachers. We invite you to re-energise, so we are introducing the teacher’s lounge, with special invitations for our loyal teachers to attend concerts purely for enjoyment!

The 2017 Meet the Music Seminars relocate to a larger venue and will be presented in November 2016, to give teachers and students plenty of time to prepare for next year’s programs. We continue with thematic connections in our schools programs.

SSO Learning and Engagement presents programs for schools at special discounted rates to enable students to experience the orchestra live. Schools pay the mandatory participation fee (MPF) to access the special prices for the Meet the Music subscription, Schools and Regional concerts. The fee includes one teacher’s attendance at the related Professional Learning (PL) and access to the digital resources that will be accessible online in 2017. Additional teachers may participate in Professional Learning seminars and workshops at discounted rates.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Meet the Music series continues to introduce audiences to a rich variety of orchestral repertoire. Presented in two discrete series to support the Higher School Certificate music syllabus, these concerts are accompanied by preparatory seminars and classroom resources. Each concert starts at the early time of 6.30pm and lasts for 2 to 2 1/2* hours, introducing students to the experience of evening concerts.

Kate Miller-Heidke brings her unique style of ‘operatic-pop’ to the SSO in the first concert of the Meet the Music 1 series. In 2017 students are sure to relish this unique cross-genre concert experience.

Katie Noonan returns to the SSO with Australia’s “poet laureate” Michael Leunig and her trio Elixir. The concert will feature the new “Gratitude and Grief” collaboration between the trio and Leunig, showcasing a unique combination of spoken-word poetry, angelic vocals and sublime improvisation.

Conductor and compere Guy Noble leads the Last Night of the Proms. Including popular works for orchestra ranging for Elgar to Arne, this is a great program to introduce students to the British institution of ‘the Proms’ – and tonight the students are the singers!

Megan Washington burst onto the Australian music scene in 2008. She started out performing jazz but her style has continued to evolve to indie pop and alternative rock. In 2017 she joins the SSO with new songs and a selection of favourites from her three studio albums.

Following Josh Pyke’s concerts in 2015, the 2017 series features three Australian female vocalists in concert with the SSO. Meet the Music 1 connects contemporary Australian makers with the orchestra, as well as the favourites in Last Night of the Proms.

In 2017 the SSO heads to Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo. Our concerts will explore the evolution of the orchestra from the first fanfares and early Baroque to the orchestra in the 21st century. Students will discover the growth of instrumental families and the development of orchestral sound.

The sounds of machines can be their own kind of music. Some composers have written music for machines and discovered ways to replicate the sounds of machinery through the instruments in the orchestra. Students will be enthralled as a typewriter joins the percussion section, we hear Elgar’s interpretation of a wagon passing and Mussorgsky’s crazy hut on chicken legs. How does a composer replicate a suave car or a jet stream through the instruments of an orchestra?

Helga Visser’s picture book is brought to life by Mark Simeon Ferguson’s score for the orchestra with storyteller, Barry Conrad. What do the animals do when the drought will not end? Students will discover the instruments of the orchestra and the sounds of the Australian bush as they take part in a very unusual concert.

Community engagement

The SSO is committed to sharing great music through our work and activities both on stage and across the community. Our 2017 outreach and engagement activities include opportunities for young people and music lovers to interact with the musicians of the SSO, through family concerts, orchestral workshops and special outdoor events.

Playerlink! Parramatta 3-day Orchestral Workshop

ORANGE REGiONAL CONSERVATiORiUM

Each year a group of SSO musicians travels to a regional centre to work with and mentor an auditioned student orchestra. This pop-up music camp provides a unique opportunity for young musicians to learn from the best in the business and for the SSO to support the orchestral and instrumental ensemble programs run by the regional conservatoriums. Student musicians in Years 5–12 are invited to apply. In 2017 Playerlink! will be hosted by the Orange Regional Conservatorium.

OUR LADY OF MERCY COLLEGE PARRAMATTA

Talented young musicians have the opportunity to be mentored by the SSO Fellows in a pop-up music camp presented in partnership with the Mercy Music and Performance Academy Parramatta. The workshop is based around the formation of a student orchestra and the SSO Fellows and includes the preparation of large orchestral works through rehearsals, sectionals and masterclasses. Students will be inspired by playing alongside their SSO Fellow mentors and the workshop concludes with a free concert for family and friends.

Calling Young Ambassadorsin 2017 we invite young music lovers to nominate to be an ambassador for the year.

Young Ambassadors will be invited to share their experiences through articles, interviews and photographs as they attend SSO events and activities.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE, CONCERT HALL

In 2017 the SSO brings three family concerts on Sunday afternoons in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. Especially for families, aimed at 5 to 12 year olds, these programs run about an hour with interactive music activities for children in the Northern foyer before and after the concert. In 2017 sport and animals come to life through the remarkable sounds of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Did you know?SSO Assistant Principal Timpani, Mark Robinson (below) invented Band in a Bucket, enabling children to make a percussion kit from their local hardware store.

OutreachSSO continues its award-winning Music 4 Health program, which sees SSO musicians perform in retirement homes and hospitals throughout Sydney and NSW. SSO musicians also continue to contribute to the wider community as teachers and members of community music groups.

Our community is far reaching, the SSO tours to countries in Asia and, along the way, undertakes community engagement work, with outreach chamber music concerts in schools and workshops and rehearsals at conservatoriums and universities. The SSO is determined to share symphonic music far and wide, inspiring young musicians across our region.

The Fellows feature in our schools concerts, demonstrating the pathway to aspiring young musicians.

u Fellows are immersed in the world of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra honing their skills beside the professionals on stage. They also prepare and perform chamber music concerts and receive coaching from visiting international artists.

u Each year, exceptional young musicians aged 18–29 are selected through a competitive national audition process to participate in the intensive, year-long program run under the guidance of SSO Principal Viola and Fellowship Artistic Director Roger Benedict.

u Since it began in 2001, SSO Fellowship alumni have won positions in some of the finest orchestras in Europe, Asia and Australia, including nine past Fellows who now hold permanent positions with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship is recognised as one of the world’s leading orchestral training programs.

Final payment is due 8 weeks prior to the performance date and/or the first Meet the Music subscription concert. At this stage numbers are final and invoices must be paid as issued.

Early Bird Offer! Receive 2016 MTM pricing by making full payment before 12 December 2016. If full payment is not received by 12 December, invoices will be updated and re-issued to reflect the 2017 MTM pricing.

Schools Concerts and Open Rehearsals Can i change the booking?Any modification to your booking must be made in writing and sent to education@sydneysymphony.com no later than 8 weeks prior to the performance date. After this date, all invoices must be paid as issued.

Can i get a refund if i cancel my booking? A school that cancels 8 weeks before the concert is able to apply for a refund. The 20% deposit made at the time of booking is non-refundable.

Cancellations received within 8 weeks of the concert are not entitled to a refund and schools are liable for payment in full as per the invoice issued.

What if the booking is made within 8 weeks of the performance?Bookings made within 8 weeks of the performance must be paid, in full, within 5 working days of the issued invoice date. If payment is not received within 5 working days of the issued invoice date, the SSO reserves the right to release the booking.

Can i increase the number of students or teachers attending?Subject to availability, schools can increase the numbers of students and/or teachers booked up to 5 working days prior

to the performance. Additional seats must be paid in full within 5 working days of the issued invoice date. The school accepts liability for all additional tickets booked.

What if an open rehearsal is moved or cancelled? Please be aware that open rehearsal dates are subject to change and cancellation. Any monies due to schools as a result of the SSO being unable to satisfy open rehearsal ticket requests will be refunded in full upon application.

Does the invoice include gST?No, SSO Learning and Engagement activities are GST exempt.

What is the difference between an Open rehearsal and a Schools Concert?Please be aware that open rehearsals are working rehearsals, not performances. The content, running order and focus of the rehearsal are determined by the conductor on the day.

Once full payment is received the SSO will provide confirmation by email. Prior to the concert, the SSO will send reminder emails with excursion and venue details and other helpful information, including how to access resources.

Invoices for all school bookings will be sent after 29 August 2016.

SSO will process booking requests in the order they are received. Please note that the booking is made on behalf of the school and the school accepts liability to make payments on the due dates.

Once your booking has been processed, the SSO will invoice your school. The 20% non-refundable deposit is to be paid within 14 days of the booking being confirmed by the SSO. If the 20% non-refundable deposit is not received within 14 days, your seats cannot be guaranteed and the SSO reserves the right to release this booking.

Meet the Music What is a Meet the Music subscription?A Meet the Music subscription is a package of four specially curated concerts (the series). The same number of students and teachers must attend all four concerts.

Can i exchange my Meet the Music tickets?Subscribing schools and tertiary institutions may exchange their group’s tickets when necessary, seats are subject to availability. Exchanges can only be processed once payment has been made in full and are only available for concerts in the 2017 Meet the Music series.

When can i exchange my Meet the Music tickets?Exchanges for subscribers will be open from Monday 21 November 2016. Subscription tickets may be exchanged up to 10 working days before the performance for which the tickets were originally issued.

How do i exchange my subscription?To exchange your school’s subscription, notice must be provided in writing and sent to education@sydneysymphony.com no later than 10 working days before the performance. Tickets must be returned to SSO Learning and Engagement no later than 48 hours before the performance date.

is there an exchange fee for Meet the Music tickets?School subscribers are entitled to one (1) group exchange with no fee, subsequent group exchanges will incur a fee of $30 per transaction (current as at 1 August 2016). Individual ticket exchanges will incur a fee plus an upgrade cost - the full single ticket price of the concert you are moving to less your 10% subscriber saving.

• Exchanges can only be processed during business hours Mon–Fri 9am–5pm.

• For subsequent exchanges, fees are payable at the time your exchange is made.

Once i’ve bought a subscription, can i buy extra tickets to the concert?Subject to availability, additional single tickets can be purchased at the full ticket price in Premium to C-Reserve seats only, less your 10% subscriber saving (current as at 1 August 2016).

SSO cannot guarantee that extra tickets will be located with the initial school subscription booking. It is the responsibility of the school to ensure that adequate supervision is provided for students attending the concert when additional tickets are purchased.
