As usual, your Annual Meeting Committee, under the direction of Dr. Lori Gearhart, has prepared another great menu of continuing education choices to meet your education needs. Many of you will attend your class reunions on Friday or Saturday night. And PLEASE… don’t miss Saturday night’s annual Student Talent Show! If you have never attended, you will be amazed at the true talent that is residing in the student body at UAB School of Dentistry. Many other receptions and meetings are planned that will allow each of you to network with your friends and talk about the good ‘ole days. How Every Practice Can Optimize Success - When Patients, Team Members & Dentists Win Big, Consistently

Featured Speaker: John CottonSponsored By: Dental Team PerformanceDate: Friday, February 3Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm CE Credit Offered: 3 Hours

Seating is limited!

About the Speaker

John Cotton is the Founder and CEO of Dental Team Performance and author of “How to Grow Your Dental Practice in the New Economy”. The firm has grown from one Birmingham dentist client to a nationwide enterprise and franchisor in seven years. John states, “Our successes are because of our client’s successes. Our client’s successes are because the focus is on achieving the wants and desires of patients, team members and dentists, consistently. Each is dependent upon the others, yet each serves the others. The expectation and reality is everybody can win, win often and win big.”

Course Description

The typical practice of top-down ‘managing’ people may serve a manufacturing business, but not a professional organization such as a dental practice where patients, team members and the dentist are personally engaged. In many respects, the concept of ‘managing’ is demotivating, thus self-defeating for optimum success. Conversely, creating an environment where team members and the dentist are self-motivated to mutually perform FOR patients (not just clinically) and FOR each other is self-fulfilling, personally and financially. This course will focus on how to tap into the greatness of human nature to collectively benefit patients, team members and dentists.

Jason Dyken, M.D., M.B.A. is the CEO and President of Dyken Wealth Strategies. He has worked with doctors for the last 25 years, first as a fellow clinician and then as a wealth strategist. He has spoken at numerous national, regional, and local doctor organizations and recently published his first book, “The 5 Most Important Financial Planning Concepts Doctors Get Wrong”.

Featured Speaker: Howard Chasolen, DMDDate: Saturday, February 4Time: 8:30am – 11:30am CE Credit Offered: 3 Hours

About the Speaker

Dr. Howard Chasolen graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1991. He earned a specialty certificate in Prosthodontics and a fellowship certificate in Implant Prosthodontics from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine from 1991 to 1994. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. He is a Past President of the Florida Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, The Florida Prosthodontic Association and The Sarasota County Dental Association as well as being appointed to the faculty at the University of Florida in the Graduate Prosthodontic Residency Program. He has restored over 20,000 units of crown and bridge, 900 full arches, and 9,000 implants. His practice is limited to Prosthodontics and is located in Sarasota, Florida.

Course Description

The goal of this program is simple: present a methodology and protocol for comprehensive restorative case management. This includes detailed restorative diagnosis , placing an adhesive core and a provisional restoration to prepare a patient for periodontal corrective procedures. Without periodontal corrective procedures, many of our adult patients with existing restorative dentistry cannot be treated effectively . And without an adhesive core and a provisional restoration, periodontal corrective procedures cannot be correctly executed. It is only after meticulous caries removal, and a perfectly restored core as well as perio restorative interface correction that a definitive restoration can be placed in a clean, dry and healthy environment that allows long term success. These principles can be applied to the simplest of single tooth ceramic crowns as well as the most complex perio/restorative full mouth reconstructions.

Featured Speaker: Peter E. Larson, DDS , FACSSponsored By: The Kitty Robinson Endowed Lectureship FundDate: Saturday, February 4Time: 8:30am – 11:30am CE Credit Offered: 3 Hours

About the Speaker

Dr. Peter Larsen was born in Kansas City, Missouri and attended Kansas State University. He completed his dental school at Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha, Nebraska and received his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialty training at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Following completion of his specialty training, he joined the full time faculty at the Ohio State University where he has taught and practiced since 1987. During that time he has been the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program, and since 1998, the Chair of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Anesthesiology. He is currently the Chief of the Dental Service at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Larsen has been actively involved in state and national service having served as the President of the Ohio Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and most recently, as the President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Academic honors include the Larry J. Peterson Endowed Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as recent induction as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Larsen’s clinical interests are in orthognathic surgery, particularly in cleft lip and palate patients, as well as implant reconstruction in children and adolescent patients with hereditary oligodontia.

Course Description

Various conditions from ectodermal dysplasia to cleft lip and palate may result in congenital or very early loss of the permanent dentition. The skeletal positional and volumetric osseous deficiencies that result in this population are unique. This, coupled with the challenge of providing provisional esthetics and function throughout several years of growth and development, makes treatment of this group of patients complex. This presentation will describe growth assessment, treatment sequencing, management of skeletal positional problems, and osseous volume deficiency in children and adolescents with oligodontia. The role of interdisciplinary treatment planning and the objectives of various aspects of management of these patients will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

Understand how the following impact management of children and adolescents with oligodontia: • Roleofgrowthanddevelopmentinchoosingpropertimingforintervention • Skeletalpositionalabnormalities, theirassessmentandcorrection • Restorationofinadequateosseousvolume • Sequenceandtimingofinterventionfromchildhoodtoadult
