• Urban Karst of the Springfield, MO area.

Page 11: 2017 NCKMS Intro

• Springfield Missouri is located on a karst plateau, commonly known as the Springfield Plateau.

• The Springfield plateau consists of a stack of Mississippian aged limestones of several hundred feet in thickness.

• The Springfield area has experienced fairly rapid urbanization over the past 25 years, resulting in numerous problems associated with the interface between surface development and the underlying karst.

• America’s first National River, Buffalo National River was established to preserve a very scenic free-flowing stream in the southern Ozarks.

• A significant section of the Buffalo River has come under threat from animal wastes as a result of the construction of a large Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) along a major tributary.

• The CAFO is entirely on karst.• The field trip will discuss this issue as well as an

overview of the karst development in this area.
