St John the Baptist Catholic School Board Report 2017
The St John the Baptist Catholic School Board acts in an advisory way providing advice and support
to Todd Murfitt as School Principal in areas including strategic planning and policy review.
The St John the Baptist Catholic School Board for 2017 comprised of Fr Anthony Kain (President),
Todd Murfitt (Principal), Daniella Amato (Chair), Kylie Adams (Secretary), Amy Stephan (Treasurer),
Marcus D’Assumpcao, Ben Stephan, Rob Smith, Leigh Hastwell, Sava Politis, Simon McHugh and
Angela DeNadai (Staff Representative).
The Finance Committee comprised of Todd Murfitt, Pam Marks, Angela DeNadai, Amy Stephan and
Daniella Amato.
Leanne De Young, Craig Bennetts and Cathy Seidel resigned from their positions on the School Board
in March 2017. I would like to formally thank Leanne, Craig and Cathy for their contribution to the
School Board and service to our school community. Our volunteers are the cornerstone to our
school’s success and these individuals have offered significant insight and expertise in the specialist
areas. The St John the Baptist Catholic School Board warmly welcomed several new Board members
to the team, Kylie Adams, Leigh Hastwell, Sava Politis and Simon McHugh, each bringing a unique
skill set and willingness to share their gifts and talents with our community.
2017 Board Year
The 2017 SJBCS strategic plan assisted in guiding us all through the priorities to be addressed. Todd
used and adjusted this document to develop the annual improvement plan to reflect his future
vision for the school whilst ensuring that all current projects remained on track and with a
contemporary focus.
Information technology was once again a high priority for staff development and has then allowed
for the implementation for all staff to have greater access to the relevant data needed to complete
their duties effectively and efficiently. The implementation of the Scorelink software has enabled
teachers to track an individual student’s progress across year levels with standardised tests to
identify trends in the individual students learning. The students have also benefited from the
recording studio, documentary making, virtual reality learning experiences and 3D printing facilities.
Nature play was another strategic plan initiative that was significantly developed in 2017. Stage 1 of
the nature play space was completed in April 2017 and has been constantly evolving as the plants
grow and the children explore the new spaces. It has provided our school community with a unique
learning space which has allowed for integrated learning opportunities across all year levels, a
fabulous market garden and a positive meeting place for families to engage.
There was also a change to the reporting structure in 2017 which was brought about by a software
availability issue from CESA. The board worked closely with staff to discuss the importance of the
reporting procedures and how this is communicated to families. The focus being on parent teacher
partnerships in a child’s learning through regular face to face meetings, the implementation of the
See Saw app across all school community groups and formal written reports. The Board received
some excellent feedback from parents that has highlighted the need for the Board to monitor this
transition in reporting closely and adjust accordingly. This is an area in which the Board will continue
to monitor closely in 2018 to ensure that we are meeting the needs of all students in the best
possible way.
![Page 11: 2017 School Performance AGM Report - St John the Baptist · 2017 School Performance AGM Report Tuesday 20th March 2018 . This page has intentionally been left blank. ... Comprehensive Principal’s reports, Finance reports and Staff reports were presented and tabled at
each meeting. These reports allowed for the Board to make informed decisions, approve spending
and develop and approve policy updates.
The Board would also like to acknowledge the unconditional support it received from CESA, Cabra
College and Sacred Heart College in our time of need during 2017. Thank you to Mark Corrigan, Brian
Schumacher and Steve Byrne for providing practical and spiritual support to our school, students,
staff and families, your generous offering of time, resources and prayer was greatly appreciated by
our community.
St John the Baptist Catholic School comprises of an amazing community of people that willingly give
up their time to share their expertise. The Board would like to thank
The teaching and administrative staff for their commitment to high standards that ensured
St John the Baptist Catholic School continued to be a rich learning environment for the
children. In 2017 each of you epitomised the vision ‘In All Things Love’, that St Mary of the
Cross, Mary MacKillop lived by. The children could not have been in better hands in such an
important time.
To the Finance Committee for their diligence to ensure that we remain in a strong financial
position in an ever-changing funding environment. I would like to acknowledge Pam Marks’s
diligent work to ensure the school’s strong financial position.
To the Parents and Friends for their dedication to community events and fundraising. 2017
saw a variety of activities on offer for the community which enabled all sectors of our
community to get involved in school life. We thank Lisa Mahoney, Mary Murray and her
team of workers for the significant funds raised for the school in 2017 and for the
opportunity for all to become engaged in our school community.
To Angela De Nadai together with Parish staff for their continued work with the school and
parish community to ensure we work as one and support each other in times of need.
Fr Anthony Kain and Fr Kevin Taylor for the ongoing spiritual involvement in school life with
strong ties with the Plympton Parish. We also thank the Pastoral Associates Julie Staszyc and
Michael Moore for their continued service to the school and their expertise and involvement
in the sacramental program assisting children and parents throughout this special time.
To all other members of our school community that have volunteered to coach sporting
teams, assisted on excursions, coordinate the school banking program, help in the
classrooms and offer their time to make our school a great community to be a part of. We
thank you all for your enthusiasm and your willingness to engage in school life.
I would also like to thank my fellow Board members for their commitment to service, great
ideas and critical thinking. It was fantastic to hear new voices and ideas at our meetings that
will bring a new direction as the community evolves in to the next generation.
2018 will bring vast discussion of future projects and priorities to ensure we can create the best
possible learning environment for our school community as it changes into a R-6 environment.

St John the Baptist Catholic School
Parents and Friends AGM Report for 2017
On behalf of the Parents & Friends Committee, it gives me great pleasure to report on the activities
coordinated by the St John the Baptist Catholic School P&F for 2017.
Our goals for 2017 were to continue to build the community spirit of the school through an increase
in family based activities and to raise funds for the school project, our outdoor learning space.
The committee for 2017 was:
Lisa Mahoney – Chairperson, Mary Murray – Deputy Chair, Todd Murfitt - Principal, Pam Marks
(does not attend meetings) - Treasurer, Teacher Representatives – Lauren Breeding & Paula Gill,
Committee Members – Darren Roles, Beth Tamm, Tash Panazzolo, Karen Harvey, Kylie Adams,
Jennifer Cox, Bianca Cook, Megan Spokes, Megan Kloeden and Gregor Dingwall.
We are yet to nominate our P&F representative on the School Board.
In consultation with the teachers we continued our work with Parent Representatives for each
class. These Parent Reps were to become the key people to liaise with and send information out
from the P&F to our school community. They assisted and rallied up helpers for community
activities such as Mothers’ & Fathers’ Day Stalls etc. More importantly they were the initiator of
connections between the families from their class.
We are pleased to share that all of our P&F team are ready to be back on board for 2018 and we
hope that others will join us! With a bigger group of parents willing to help out, we’ll look to again
create sub committees for each event.
2017 Activities included:
School Discos (one run by our Year 7s)
Family BYO Dinner on the oval
Easter Raffle
The introduction of the Colour Run – it was a fantastic fundraiser and we particularly thank Karen Harvey for her coordination of this event – loved by both kids and parents!!!
SJBCS Ladies Night
The introduction of the People’s Choice Community Lottery (another fantastic fundraiser and we thank Jennifer Cox for her coordination of this event!)
Wine Drive
Oyster Drive
Mothers’/Fathers’ Day stalls
Art Calendars
With these activities, the community together raised approximately $18,300.00; these funds will be
used to fund school projects.

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
The 2017 school year was filled with unity, love and grace. Our community has held
remarkably strong as we draw upon our deepest reserves to support one another as we
come to terms with the loss of Isaac Nicholls. As we continue to work closely with the family
to honour our memories of Isaac, I thank our staff, our families and broader community for
the love and generosity of spirit that you have kindly shared with us all.
As a school, we are charged with a great responsibility of creating conditions where the
development of the whole child and character can flourish. As a staff and Catholic school
community, we take great pride in using our school logo and vision as our guide and a
reminder to always put children first in every decision we make. Our school values continue
to permeate all that we do and they are the basis upon which every decision is made. Our
school motto, “In All Things Love” sums it up. We are witnesses of Christ in our actions,
words and attitudes. If we cannot live up to our motto we cease to be of relevance. The staff
are very aware of this and their demonstration of living witness is evident in the care,
dedication and respect they have for each student and every family in the school. We are
very proud of the staff and community of St John the Baptist. Our understanding of working
together in partnership is our greatest asset.
St John the Baptist Catholic School in partnership with families, is a community which creates
opportunities for encountering life to the full- in all its personal, religious, political, ecological
and cultural richness.
Throughout 2017, St John the Baptist Catholic School continued to work towards a future
which frequently presents new initiatives and constant change. Nurturing a love of learning
in each child lies at the heart of our core business, learning and teaching. Teaching for
excellence for each child requires acquisition of knowledge and skills as well as the seven
General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum, Literacy, Numeracy, Information and
Communication Technology capability, critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding
and intercultural understanding. In 2017 we have continued to encourage our children and
young people to strive for excellence and aim to reach their full potential based on their
uniqueness and individual talents and abilities.
St John the Baptist continues to improve educational standards through initiatives in all nine
curriculum areas. The school community strives to apply best practice in teaching and learning
which places the child at the centre of our professional endeavours. We continue to provide
excellence and equity for all students by providing a challenging curriculum from which
rigorous, relevant and engaging learning programs are developed that address individual
learning needs.
![Page 18: 2017 School Performance AGM Report - St John the Baptist · 2017 School Performance AGM Report Tuesday 20th March 2018 . This page has intentionally been left blank. ... There was significant work undertaken to make learning visible at St John the Baptist Catholic
School in 2017. We saw the design, planning and completion of our new ‘Nature Play’ space';
design and planning and initial fit out of new STEM labs; continued replacement of classroom
technologies including new digital displays, quality sound systems and microphones to
support inclusive education.
The Seesaw learning app was further developed with great success and improved consistency
across the school. This will continue to grow as an effective reporting and engagement tool
for parents. Our communication strategy was further developed with the enhancement of
our website; developed use of the ‘schoolstream’ app and continuous reviewing of our school
newsletter.
Teachers worked together to live out their vision statements for learning in their
communities. The visions will continue to become a focal point for teachers into the future.

Amato. I acknowledge all 2017 School Board members: Sava Politis, Marcus d’Assumpcao,
Kylie Adams, Rob Smith, Leigh Hastwell, Simon McHugh, Ben and Amy Stephan and Angela

retires from her role on the school finance committee. On behalf of the community, we
thank you all most sincerely for your commitment and support of our school. Your presence
on the school board has enriched our school in so many ways.
Thank you to all parents who give their time to help out at school. Your support helps so
many children and also makes ‘life’ a little easier in the canteen, in classrooms and for
excursions and outdoor activities. You are much appreciated! We acknowledge and thank
our dedicated and committed Parents and Friends who work tirelessly to enrich our school

rests with the support of its community. We thank you for all that you have given to the
school through the number of exciting initiatives such as school disco, movie night, wine
drive, oyster drive, Easter Raffle, Mother’s / Father’s Day Stalls just to name a few. We thank
our amazing Parent and Friends Committee.
I wish to acknowledge the enormous pride we have in our students. Their manners,
respect and care of each other is commendable and a testament to the strong values of
their parents. The children never let us down. They represent the school in sport and
cultural events with pride. They participate in community events, excursions, extracurricular
events and school activities with generous attitudes and admirable enthusiasm. We wish
our 2017 graduating students and their families every success as they continue with their

AGM APRIM REPORT SJBCS 2017
2017 was the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. It focused on bringing about a better appreciation of the inherent values of different cultures, thereby contributing to the strengthening of peace in the world. As part of our professional learning day at the beginning of the year, staff explored effective pedagogy in Religious Education. Alison Gore from the CEO Faith Formation team worked with the staff communities developing units of work for the students. Each community is developing Enduring Understandings and incorporating cross curricula subjects within the RE unit.
Many staff continued to enroll in Religious Education courses for their Catholic Professional Formation (CPF3). In conjunction with the Religious Education (RE) team at the Catholic Education Office, we were able to offer a school based module, focusing on the work begun at the beginning of the year, Crossways, Enduring Understandings and the Understanding by Design (UBD) model. Looking back on the year, I can honestly say that the Spirit is alive and working in our youth at school. As you read through this report, the living Spirit has touched the lives of many in the school’s community in diverse ways. St Brigid’s From Week 11 Term 1 to Week 7 Term 2 I accepted the role as Deputy Principal at St Brigid’s, Evanston. This was an opportunity to further develop my leadership skills. During my time away a parent and student at the school sadly lost their lives. It was heartwarming to witness faith drawing the community together supporting one another through this time of grief. I believe God was in our midst suffering with us and embracing us with his love and strength. We have planted a memorial tree for the student in the Nature Play area which students water and care for. Faith in Action Each Wednesday morning, students joined parishioners at Mass. The Church has a rich tradition of formal and informal styles of prayer; it is here that students gave witness to the Church’s signs, symbols and rituals to celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus who continues to be present to the community. In Term Three we continued to invite families from year level communities to share in Sunday Eucharist. The Religious Education program provided a variety of prayer experiences for the students. These have included lunchtime meditations, prayer through colour, Lectio Divinia, individual class prayer and community prayer. Parents took up the invitation to join in many of these celebrations. On Wednesday June 24th we celebrated the Feast of the birth of St John the Baptist by having a whole school Mass in the John the Baptist Centre. The students also enjoyed delicious fresh fruit provided by Mat from Tropicana Fruit. It was wonderful to see many parents join us for the occasion. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop was celebrated with a Whole School Liturgy of the Word. Integrating Ecology Across the Curriculum We began on this journey by looking at what CPF units were available and how we could incorporate Ecology and RE across our school curriculum. After searching we discovered that Alice Dunlop from “Little Earthies” who was eager to enroll students in her course titled “Integrating Ecology across the Curriculum”. It was a perfect fit. And so 6 brave staff members Adriana, Kath, Nat, Tina, Paula and myself signed up for the course. The course was rigorous and in-depth and many hours were spent afterschool and on weekends researching and discussing topics and articles. We also had to respond to online discussions posting our thoughts and summaries relating to the set topics, authors and theologians. This was challenging to say the least. The course culminated in devising and submitting a cross curriculum unit of work.

Sacraments Last year approx 25 students enrolled in the Sacrament program. The Sacraments of Initiation were Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Communion. St John the Baptist Sacramental Team which comprises of the Parish Priest, APRIMs and Pastoral Associates work in collaboration with St Mary’s Memorial, and Our Lady of Grace at Glengowrie. There were families from other neighbouring Catholic and Government schools who also joined the program at St John’s. Visiting and working with families in their homes to guide them on their special journey was both community building and rewarding. The Sacrament of Confirmation was held at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Vicar General Philip Marshal, Fr Anthony and Fr Kevin Taylor presided at the ceremony. The Sacrament of First Communion was also held at St John the Baptist Catholic Church where students celebrated receiving the sacrament of First Communion as part of the parish Saturday and Sunday Service. The students were well received by the parish community and the support of their faith journey was very affirming to both the parents and students. Sustainability “Little Earthies Day” The whole school took part in “Little Earthies” day. This was the culmination of a unit of work Mrs Gill and I devised in response to a study centered on sustainability and prayer. Many of the concepts were based around St Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si” – encouraging ecological change. We began the session in the hall with students participating in a discussion that highlighted how St John’s was being sustainable and what other practices could be employed. Students then returned to their classes where they took part in activities which intertwined prayer with sustainable practices. The activities ranged from STEM ice challenges, stone mandalas to discovering how leaves breathe. It was an enjoyable day for all with many students and staff commenting on the success of
the sessions. “Our connection to all things natural, is spiritual” (On Holy Ground). God's mercy can make even the driest land become a garden, can restore life to dry bones (cf. Ez 37:1-14). ... Let us be renewed by God's mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish. — Easter Urbi et Orbi

Made In The Image of God
For it was you who Formed my inward parts;
You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you,
For I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Ps 139 The program covers four strands: Being Human, Being Sexual, Being Moral, Being Connected Each Strand begins with a Living Catholic Tradition statement presenting Church teaching relevant to the Strand. The program supports parents in their role as the first and foremost educators in human sexuality. Through implementing this program, our school ensures that parent partnerships are highly valued and are continually strengthened and enriched. Out Reach Programs Throughout the year students were involved in may outreach programs recognising that Christians are called to create and support institutions, networks and organizations that enhance people’s opportunities for the fulfillment of human potential. St John’s supported Catholic Charities this year by hosting a “Backwards Day” on Friday 29th September. Students were able to wear their casual clothes backwards, ie shirt with buttons at the back or top inside out, to school and bring a gold coin donation. The school raised in excess of $300 and students’ creativity was celebrated. Throughout the year the school community supported many missions such as Project Compassion, winter appeal

– clothing for homeless, Catholic Charities and the Christmas Hamper drive. I would like to thank the families in our community who so generously give for those in need. “Never see a need without doing something about it” St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Just Leadership Day The students were involved in discussions and interactive exercises to help them understand more about how we all can combat poverty and injustice. The opportunity provided students with valuable experiences so they would be able to take back plenty of ideas and activities to others in the school. Students soon realised that choices are made every day, some good and some not so good. These choices have an impact on our world and the people living in it. The day concluded with a brainstorming session on how students could be advocates for change in their schools and communities. Well done all Year 7 students for their active participation and creative problem solving ideas. ReLAT The Year 4 students participated in ReLAT Religious Literacy Assessment Tool in Term 3. This assessment is online and the format is very similar to that of NAPLAN. The assessment was developed by the Catholic Education Office for all Year 4 students in Catholic Schools in South Australia. 46 Year 4 students sat the test and scored within the 70th percentile, in comparison to all Year 4 Classes in the Diocese whose average score was in the 70th percentile. St John’s School average is 1.0% above the state average. ‘The Ripple Effect’ (School/Parish Pastoral Care Group) The group is made up of parent volunteers, APRIM and Pastoral Associate. It responds to requests to provide food and other assistance for families from our school community who find themselves in situations of need. The families being served remain anonymous, as confidentiality is a high priority. The members are very generous with their care and time. There are times when ongoing assistance is needed such as putting families in touch with the right people i.e. St Vincent de Paul to help them with living requirements and assistance with housing. The Ripple Effect supported a number of families last year with food due to health and family issues. We were in contact with a member of the Diocesan Multicultural Team who assisted in translating documents and providing assistance to help parents better understand what was being asked of them, especially with government departments. Ripple Effect’s ongoing focus is to become more aware of the needs of school families through a concerted connection with class teachers and parent representatives. The aim is to further develop relationships that promote openness to receiving support and assistance as needed in a sensitive and respectful manner. We would like to thank Fr Anthony Kain (PP) and Fr Kevin Taylor for all their dedicated work during the year and for providing the students with a role model demonstrating living the life of a disciple of Jesus. The school community has appreciated their time and effort. I also thank all staff, parents and friends who gave of their time to be supportive of the Sacraments of Initiation during the year. I thank God for the many blessings we received throughout 2017 and the support and guidance of Fr Anthony Kain (PP), Fr Kevin Taylor the Parish Team. I would also like to thank Mr Todd Murfitt, the staff and community of St John the Baptist for their continued support throughout the year. “Let us rejoice and thank God for giving us such solid proofs of his love. AGM ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL
20 MARCH 2018
All lean on one another this year – family, school, church.
Report from the Parish Priest – Rev. Dr. Anthony Kain
Our Archbishop, Philip Wilson with his Visitation Team of Vicar General Fr. Philip Marshall,
Chancellor, Mrs Heather Carey, and Director of Ministry and Leadership , Mrs Teresa Lynch, visited
our Parish to have a conversation with us about how our parish community lives the Gospel Mission
of Christ here. One of the good parts of that conversation was about the quality of St. John’s School
and its links with the parish. It made me think of the rich tradition with which we live.
St. Mary MacKillop and Fr. Julian Tenison Woods ‘invented’ a form of Catholic Education in Penola in
the 1860s. Their model was introduced to the Glenelg Parish in August 1869; the parish was to have
a new ministry, Catholic Education, and on 7 June 1869 Mary opened a school on the corner of
Moseley Street and Bath Street the day after our first church/school in Glenelg Parish was blessed
and opened. The Sister of St. Joseph took up this ministry more with the school at Keswick, the
Kurralta Park and finally now at Plympton. The aim of this model was to invite children (and their
families) to be part of a faith community, the Catholic Church in the Parish.
It was about learning the advantage of a Parish School and a Parish Church leaning on one another,
supporting one another and, in turn, supporting their families.
Todd Murfitt our current Principal and our staff, our School Board, Parents and Friends and other
parent bodies here are dedicated to such a model of learning. I thank them for all they did for us
and with us in 2017. We are really blessed in having one another with whom to live, and move and
have our being and the children ‘learn’. Added to which we are at a new moment for Catholic
Education as Grade 7 becomes part of senior school and Grade 6 is the final year of primary school.
The complexity of implementing this change will be a bit of a test for us yet I’m sure with the good
spirit in our school community, we will manage. Thanks to all who have collaborated to make this
happen for us.
Formation is the other cornerstone of our mission here. I mentioned some years ago that Timothy
Radcliffe, a Dominican priest, wrote a book called “What is the point of Being a Christian?” This
question is very raw but it is a good one to think about again as we think back on 2017 and go
forward at our school as part of our Parish mission. What is the point of being at St. John the Baptist
Catholic School? Answers to this are within the school focused by Todd and Angela and the staff, and
in the parish focused by the Parish Pastoral Team. They are especially in your homes focused by
parents and wider family life.
Our journey is not about seeking to create an ideal group. Christians are usually no better than
anyone else! In fact the point of being a Christian is to find a place of evident freedom, courage, joy
and hope within the mess of our immediate world and of the wider world.
The central aspect of our faith journey is to consider how do we meet and know Jesus Christ as his
compassion, mercy, goodness and love reconcile our lives and the mess of our world. How do we
meet God found in Christ?
I never tire of what Gabe Huck, an American theologian, gives us something to which we are asked
to respond. He gives an answer to this HOW question. He writes that it is “In ‘doing’ the liturgy –
![Page 25: 2017 School Performance AGM Report - St John the Baptist · 2017 School Performance AGM Report Tuesday 20th March 2018 . This page has intentionally been left blank. ... “over many Sundays, many seasons and festivals, many weddings and initiations and anointing’s and
funerals – Christ’s own spirit, seeps and creeps into us, into the person, into the people. That is the
way it works”
So with Sunday Eucharist that includes LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDEN, with CLASS AND
WHOLE SCHOOL MASSES, WITH CLASS PRAYER, with the example of parents and staff at St John the
Baptist Catholic School children meet Christ! They meet him in the inspiration we are to one
another at home, at school and in the Parish. I hope we can support this happening as we all lean on
one another in 2018 – family, school, church; we go forward with hope…
Anthony Kain,
Parish Priest, President of the School Board

English as an Additional Language (EAL)
In all schools across Australia, the Commonwealth Government provides funds to establish English as an Additional Language (EAL) Programs for children who are expected to speak or understand a language other than English in their home for a reasonably high percentage of their time. The amount of EAL funding that each school receives is dependent upon the number of EAL students with the highest needs, meaning that their skills in speaking, reading, writing and comprehending English fall below a certain level. In 2017 we:
Collaborated with the CEO EAL Co-ordinator.
Collected one EAL students’ writing- written language.
Accessed resources for Classroom Teacher and had writing assessed
Our Learning & Well Being teacher collaborated with teachers to set goals for these students based on recommendations from the report.
Inclusive Education
In 2017 St John the Baptist Catholic School supplied student information to Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on all students who were having adjustments made to the curriculum. This process continued to encourage staff to become more accountable for the learning of these students. Teachers consulted regularly with parents, students and Toni Fitzgerald to develop SMART goals for the Individual Education Plan (IEP). Adjustments to the curriculum are documented which enable all students to access the curriculum on the same basis as their peers. These were documented on an Individual Education Plan for all students who we identified as having a disability or for children who needed extra support in particular curriculum areas or with behaviour/well-being. All meetings held to discuss student learning were documented; student work samples were collected and teacher planning was used as evidence for NCCD. Teachers were also given time to develop specific learning programs for children on an IEP’s. Educational Support Officers also use this planning to provide extra support for the students in class. Teachers continue to use Differentiation as an Adjustment. Differentiating the curriculum is an adjustment. “Differentiation is defined as a response to the cognitive, affective, social and physical characteristics that distinguish what and how students learn. A classroom where learners are provided with equal opportunity to learn, but are not expected to learn the same curriculum in the same way in the same time is the context that exemplifies differentiation. Respect for individual differences among and between learners is a definition of differentiation.” Sandra Kaplan (2006) We have a number of children accessing Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Psychology and other services during the school day. We offer a space for these specialists to work at school with the students. Families organise this support we continue and support and encourage children to access these specialist services during the school day. Throughout the year, we have also accessed support for our students from CAMHS and Autism SA and applied for grants from CESA to assist the students in our school. We had two new ESO staff join us to support children with wellbeing and learning. They are Briony Lucas and Ethan Miller.
We continued to access support from our consultants from our CESA's from Students with Disability and the Behaviour Team.

School Performance Information
Professional Engagement
St John the Baptist Catholic School is a Catholic Co-educational Reception to Year 7 school of 312
enrolments that caters for the diverse needs of families and children in the Plympton and
surrounding area. Our prime aim is to provide a happy, safe and vibrant learning and pastoral
environment where our faith is lived and modelled through Christian values and beliefs. Partnership
between home and school is therefore essential. Specific programs are in place to support children
with learning disabilities/adaptive education, English as an Additional Language learners and
children with social and emotional needs.
Our classroom and outdoor learning facilities are outstanding and compliment children’s learning
programs. Almost all of our enrolments come from family referrals, word of mouth as well as many
old scholars. Performing Arts, Japanese, German and Physical Education and Health are speciality
areas for the children’s learning. We offer a healthy Canteen, private Instrumental Tuition and an
extra-curricular sports program.

Key Student Outcomes
Student Attendance and Management of Non-Attendance
Student Attendance was managed and recorded using the CeSIS (Catholic Education Student
Information System) and SMS texting using the CeSIS system. Student absence is monitored closely
and followed up as necessary. Parents are encouraged to ring the school (8293 6280) or SMS
(0409 793 402).
Dealing with Non-Attendance of Students
1. Parent rings/SMSs the school and reports the absence
2. We ask for the student’s name, class and reason for absence.
3. Class teachers are informed.
4. It is cross referenced with the Absentee Roll Class List and those names that are not entered
into the system are done so by the office.
We ask that parents ring in before 9.30am with the absence information.
We ask that the teachers have their absence list completed by 9.15am.
For long term absences parents are required to write a letter to the class teacher and Principal
informing the school of the absence and the length of absence.
Unsatisfactory reasons for absence are referred to the Principal via the teacher. The Principal will
then contact the family. The Principal will ring the Department of Education and Child Development
(DECD) officers if attendance is unsatisfactory.

Our teachers use the data from the National Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing to
design learning programs which we hope will further support all of our children, wherever
they may be on their learning journey.

Surveys
In 2017 we surveyed the school community and staff members on Todd Murfitts Principal Review
and the staff WHS Learning Portal.
Todd Murfitt’s Principal Review is a process, which involves the collection of data from a variety of
key stakeholders.
The overall response was that the community were very happy with the support of their children
and the new capital works.
The second survey was a staff survey on the Catholic Educations Workplace Health & Safety Portal.
17 responses were recorded to ascertain if the learning objectives were clearly defined and if it was
organised and easy to follow.
