scoring the match’s ! rst ! ve points on a Rogers/May block,

a Buechler/Gates roof and three Washington State errors. At

9-4, two Mosser kills, a Rogers solo block and a WSU error

put UCLA up 13-4. The Bruins’ lead reached double ! gures

for the ! rst time at 15-5 and went as high as 14 at 24-10.

The Cougars saved the ! rst two set points, but a Mosser kill

completed a 25-12 victory. Mosser was error-free with ! ve

kills in nine swings, while Gates added three kills. Muno tallied

six digs. The Bruins hit .357 and held the Cougars to a -.133

percentage.

Washington State (12-4, 1-3 Pac-12) scored three of the ! rst

four of set two, and led by one as late as 6-5, but a 4-1 Bruin

run on three Mosser kills and one by Buechler gave the home

team the lead for good. At 15-10, UCLA scored four in a row

on kills by Buechler, Gates and May and a bad set by WSU.

The lead got to double digits for the ! rst time at 22-12, as the

Bruins scored the last ! ve points of the set on kills by Buechler

and Sponcil, a Buechler ace, a Gates/Sponcil block and a

Mosser kill to win the second 25-12. Buechler was error-free

with six kills in 11 attempts, Mosser added ! ve kills and May

was 4-for-5 with no miscues. Muno posted seven digs. The

Bruins out-hit the Cougars .421-.156.

The Bruins jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set three on three

Buechler kills, two May aces, a Rogers ace and two Cougar

errors, and led by as many as ! ve as late as 17-12 before a big

comeback by the visitors. Washington State scored six straight

to take its ! rst lead of the set at 18-17. Two Mosser kills put

the Bruins back up, but the next four went to Washington State

to give the Cougars a 22-19 edge. UCLA got to within one at

22-21 and 23-22, but WSU netted the last two to win the third

25-22. Buechler was error-free with six kills in 10 attempts,

Mosser added ! ve kills and Muno posted seven digs, as the

Bruins were out-hit .333 to .071.

Like set one, the Bruins led wire-to-wire in the fourth to ! nish

off the victory. UCLA scored the ! rst four points on kills by

May, Rogers and Buechler and a WSU attack error. The Bruins’

lead got to eight at 13-5 before the Cougars had thoughts of

another comeback thanks to a 5-0 run. But UCLA netted the

next three on kills by Mosser and May and a WSU error and

led by at least ! ve for the rest of the set. At 21-13, the Bruins

scored the last four on two Buechler kills, a Cougar attack

error and a Sponcil/Gates block to wrap up the 25-13 win.

Buechler was error-free in the fourth with seven kills in 14

attempts, while May added three kills. Sponcil had ! ve digs.

The Bruins hit .371 to the Cougars’ .000 clip.

#13 BRUINS FALL IN FOUR TO #6 WASHINGTON

Senior Reily Buechler (14 kills, 12 digs), senior Sarah Sponcil

(40 assists, 17 digs) and freshman Jenny Mosser (12 kills,

11 digs) all had double-doubles, but the 13th-ranked Bruins

dropped a four-setter to #6 Washington on Friday at Pauley

Pavilion. Set scores were 25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 15-25.

Junior Zana Muno recorded 15 digs, sophomore Madeleine

Gates had nine kills, junior Kyra Rogers added eight kills,

sophomore Savvy Simo tallied six digs and freshman Mac May

posted six kills. The Bruins hit .193 for the match.

UCLA (8-4, 1-2 Pac-12) dropped ! ve of the ! rst six points

of the match, but would come back during the middle stages

of the opener to take the ! rst. Still down by as many as four

at 9-5, the Bruins scored seven of nine to take their ! rst lead

of the match at 12-11. Rogers had a pair of kills, Buechler

and Mosser each recorded one and Washington made three

hitting errors. After a sideout by the Huskies, six in a row for

the Bruins on three Buechler kills and three UW errors put the

home team up by a half a dozen.

The Bruins’ largest lead of the set was eight at 22-14

following a Rogers/Mosser block. On their second set point, a

Mosser kill ! nished up a 25-18 victory. Buechler and Rogers

each had four kills in the opener, while Muno and Sponcil both

notched six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Huskies .294 to .108.

Washington (13-1, 3-0 Pac-12) led from start to ! nish in

set two, racing out to another 5-1 lead. The Huskies’ largest

advantage was seven on a few occasions, as the Bruins

scored back-to-back points just ! ve times in the set, dropping

the second 25-20. Mosser had four kills in the set, Gates and

May each tallied three and Sponcil recorded seven digs, as the

Bruins were out-hit .282 to .225.

Just like the ! rst two sets, Washington stormed out to a 5-1

lead in the third, and just like the second, the Huskies didn’t

trail. Washington led by as many as seven on a few occasions.

Down 20-13, the Bruins scored ! ve in a row on two Buechler

kills and three UW errors to get to within two, but UCLA would

get no closer, dropping the set 25-22. Buechler recorded six

kills, Mosser added four and Muno and Simo each totaled four

digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .361 to .244.

Washington copied things in the fourth, again taking a 5-1

edge in the set and leading wire-to-wire. The Huskies’ largest

lead was 13 at 24-11. The Bruins saved three set points on

a Washington error, a Rogers/Sponcil block and a Mosser kill,

but the Huskies claimed the fourth by a score of 25-15. Gates

recorded four kills, while Buechler had six digs, as the Bruins

were out-hit .241 to .000.

men’s volleyball team.UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero announced on Feb. 10, 2010 the hiring of Sealy as head coach of the Bruin

women’s volleyball program. Sealy returned to his alma mater after spending four seasons (2006-09) as an associate

head coach at the University of Hawai’i. He was a three-time All-American and an assistant coach for four years with the UCLA men’s volleyball team and was an assistant with the Bruin women’s volleyball program in 2005.

Sealy helped Hawai’i to a berth in the National Semi nals in 2009. The Rainbow Wahine recorded their second-

straight, 30-win season last year, going 32-3 overall. They also posted a 16-0 mark in conference play to earn their 14th-straight Western Athletic Conference title and went on to claim their 10th-consecutive WAC Tournament championship. Sealy’s record during his tenure at Hawai’i was 119-19 (.862 winning percentage).

Prior to his stint at Hawai’i, Sealy coached for four seasons at UCLA, where he was an assistant on the men’s side from 2003-2006 and an assistant for the women’s volleyball team in 2005. In his senior season, Sealy and the Bruins won the program’s 14th National Championship, going 24-3. The team captain was named the co-Most Outstanding Player of the 1993 NCAA Tournament and also earned ASICS/Volleyball Monthly Player of the Year and AVCA All-American rst-team honors. In addition, Sealy was named an All-American in 1991 ( rst-team) and 1992 (third-team), as well as All-Conference three times. The Bruins won three conference titles during Sealy’s playing days, going 80-24 (.769) during his four years.
