Part 1: Post-Traumatic Stress: How to Deal With the Tough StuffThursday, Feb. 23, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CT

Carolyn Sanders, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE Chief Nurse Executive, UCHealth, and Chief Nursing Officer, University of Colorado Hospital

How do you prepare for the unthinkable? Catastrophic events — mass shootings, bombings, even natural disasters — happen with little or no warning. How can nurses prepare for that terrible moment when victims come pouring in? In this session, a nurse leader who faced such a terrifying day shares her story. She will reveal the most important lessons learned, the decisions she confronted, the actions her team took to save lives and how they coped with the after-effects of that traumatic day. In this session, participants will:

• Outline strategies to prepare your unit for a catastrophic event

• Learn how to recognize post-traumatic stress in your team and what to do about it

Part 2: Not on My Watch: Preventing Workplace ViolenceThursday, March 16, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CT

Ann Scott Blouin, PhD, RN, FACHE Executive Vice President, Customer Relations, The Joint Commission

Violent outbursts come in many forms — from verbal attacks to physical assaults, from gang violence to domestic abuse. Violence is a more common source of injury in health care than in any other industry. Threats alone, even when they don’t lead to physical injury, can cause significant psychological trauma and stress. Nursing leaders must take steps to protect their teams. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) developed a road map to protect health care workers. In this session, participants will:

• Define workplace violence and be able to state two reasons why violence in the workplace is increasing

• Discuss risk factors that correlate with increased workplace violence

Part 3: Keeping Our Leaders: Options for Nursing Leaders in Retirement Thursday, April 20, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CT

Kathy Boyle, PhD, RN, NEA-BC Chief Nursing Officer, Denver Health

Nursing leaders recognize the importance of retaining their most experienced nursing staff. Yet three million baby boomers are retiring every year — and with them go the knowledge and experience gained from years on the job. In this session, we will explore the options for leveraging retiring caregivers while preparing for the increased health care demands of the future. The answer for Denver Health includes developing innovative nursing roles that are less demanding, allowing for better work-life balance to the benefit of both individual nurses and the organization. In this session, participants will:

• Review health care leadership turnover statistics and future demand for nursing roles

• Discuss one organization’s design of new roles for retiring leaders in health care

• Identify creative roles for retiring health care workers

Part 4: Communication, Conflict and Co-Workers — Oh, My! Navigating the Road to Effective CommunicationThursday, Aug. 31, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CT

Renee Thompson, DNP, RN, CMSRN CEO and President, RTConnections, LLC

The Joint Commission reports that 80 percent of serious medical errors are linked in some way to poor communication between caregivers. Yet health care workers are not always taught effective communication skills. Nurse leaders are communicating from the moment they encounter another person, whether colleague or patient. Not just words, but tone, cadence and body language determine the quality of that communication. This session will explore types of communication, nonverbal messages and how to recognize their meanings and techniques for improving these critical skills. In this session, participants will:

• Identify characteristics of aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive and assertive communication

• Develop assertive communication skills

• Incorporate body language techniques to strengthen relationships with your team

Part 5: Resiliency: Bouncing Back From Setbacks Thursday, Sept. 28, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CT

Rose O. Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN Professor and Director, Nursing Leadership Institute, Florida Atlantic University

At some point in life, all of us face a deeply troubling setback — be it a serious health issue, a difficult relationship, loss of employment or a mistake at work. This certainly applies to nursing leaders, who are constantly under pressure to make quick decisions on a multitude of issues. The true test of resiliency is your reaction to the distress caused by the setback. This session will describe how resilient people use their skills and strengths to bounce back from problems and challenges. In this session, participants will:

• Discuss the evidence on resiliency and its importance in today’s environment

• Identify ways to use resiliency strategies to overcome both personal and work challenges

• Describe how resiliency can be used to maintain perspective and turn setbacks into learning experiences

Part 6: Healthy Nurse, Healthy NationThursday, Oct. 19, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CT

Mary Jo Assi, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, NEA-BC, FAAN Vice President, Nursing Practice and Innovation, American Nurses Association

Long hours, heavy workloads and stressful situations take their toll on nurses. Nearly every indicator reveals that registered nurses’ health is worse than the average American’s. Unhealthy nurses cannot perform at their best, and some argue that they lack credibility when coaching others on healthy habits. The American Nurses Association is launching a “healthy nurse, healthy nation” initiative to highlight the importance of health in health care and the nation. In this session, participants will:

• Identify the consequences of having an unhealthy staff and the implications for workflow

• Develop strategies that nursing leaders can use to motivate their team members to adopt healthier lifestyles
