2017 wadeable streams summary report

5
Survey Methods All streams are sampled according to WDNR wadable streams monitoring proto- cols. TREND survey sites are sampled annually while ROTATION sites are sam- pled on a rotational frequency (3, 6 or 12 years). All sampling sites are electrofished with either a towed barge or backpack shocker. Sampling distance is at least 35 times the mean stream width or a minimum of 330 feet (100 meters), whichever is greater. All gamefish are identified to species, measured for length, and examined for fin-clips. In at least one survey site per stream, all fish species are collected and counted. If multiple sites are designated for a stream only one site needs to be sampled for all fish. Metrics used to describe fish populations include catch per unit effort (CPUE), length frequency distribution and index of biotic integrity (IBI). 2017 Wadeable Streams Summary Report Upper Fox and Wolf River Fish Management Area Survey Objectives In 2017, the Department of Natural Resources conducted electrofishing surveys on wadable streams locat- ed in Green Lake, Marquette, Shawano, Waushara, and Waupaca Counties in order to provide insight and direction for the future management of these waters. Metric Descriptions Catch per unit effort (CPUE) is an indirect method of measuring fish popu- lation relative abundance. For all trout surveys we typically quantify CPUE by the number and size of trout captured per mile of stream. CPUE indexes are compared to statewide streams by percentile (PCTL). For example, if a CPUE is in the 90th percentile, it is higher than 90% of the other CPUEs in the state. CPUE percentiles can also be used to categorize trout abundance by 33rd (low density), 66th (moderate), 90th (high), and 95th (very high) benchmarks. The Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) is a rating of environmental quality based on fish assemblage. Scores of 90-100 would indicate excellent quality while scores less than 30 would indicate poor quality. Our analysis utilizes the IBI for Wisconsin coldwater streams where the maximum daily mean water tem- perature is usually less than 22°C (71.6 0 F). Coolwater and warmwater IBIs may be summarized for some sites. Length frequency distribution is a graphical representation of the percent- age of fish captured by one inch size intervals.

Survey Methods

All streams are sampled according to WDNR wadable streams monitoring proto-cols.

• TREND survey sites are sampled annually while ROTATION sites are sam-pled on a rotational frequency (3, 6 or 12 years).

• All sampling sites are electrofished with either a towed barge or backpack shocker.

• Sampling distance is at least 35 times the mean stream width or a minimum of 330 feet (100 meters), whichever is greater.

• All gamefish are identified to species, measured for length, and examined for fin-clips. In at least one survey site per stream, all fish species are collected and counted. If multiple sites are designated for a stream only one site needs to be sampled for all fish.

• Metrics used to describe fish populations include catch per unit effort (CPUE), length frequency distribution and index of biotic integrity (IBI).

Survey Objectives In 2017, the Department of Natural Resources conducted electrofishing surveys on wadable streams locat-ed in Green Lake, Marquette, Shawano, Waushara, and Waupaca Counties in order to provide insight and direction for the future management of these waters. Primary sampling objectives of these surveys were to characterize relative abundance and size structure for all gamefish species and overall ecological integrity through an index of biotic integrity (IBI). The following report is a summary of all streams and sites surveyed in 2017. Individual summary reports are also available for each stream surveyed. Metric Descriptions • Catch per unit effort (CPUE) is an indirect method of measuring fish popu-

• The Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) is a rating of environmental quality based on fish assemblage. Scores of 90-100 would indicate excellent quality while scores less than 30 would indicate poor quality. Our analysis utilizes the IBI for Wisconsin coldwater streams where the maximum daily mean water tem-perature is usually less than 22°C (71.60 F). Coolwater and warmwater IBIs may be summarized for some sites.

• Length frequency distribution is a graphical representation of the percent-age of fish captured by one inch size intervals.
