If you live in Missoula and have a son or daughter with an interest in learning to kayak, the Zoo Town Surfers youth kayaking club is without exception the most affordable and experienced option in the region. Zoo Town Surfers has been providing quality youth whitewater programs since 2004. Created specifically for local teenagers, the club creates the opportunity for adventure, and self-discovery from the seat of a kayak in a fun and supportive club atmosphere. Students are placed in groups according to their skill level with an emphasis on fundamental concepts, from technique to river awareness. Providing parents the convenience of transportation from Missoula to the river, and back, Zoo Town Surfers takes students to the river every week — all summer long! The program has successfully taught hundreds of teens the sport of kayaking, facilitating their progression into competent whitewater enthusiasts under the tutelage of skilled instructors, mentors, and positive peer interaction.

Participants in the Zoo Town Surfers kayaking program pay annual dues and are organized into three skill level groups: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. From June to August these groups meet weekly for transportation to the river for supervised and coached kayaking sessions.

All river sessions are level appropriate, allowing participants to have fun and to continually progress throughout the summer.

Annual dues include transportation and supervision by certified coaches, with additional kayaking professionals participating periodically as guest instructors. Equipment is available for summer rental on a first-come, first-serve basis and any of our instructors are willing to advise students regarding the most appropriate and affordable options. For beginners who are looking to learn the sport (or anyone trying to remember all of his or her gear), the following items are what we call the Six Essentials and may be rented or purchased as a package deal from any of the local kayak shops. Additional gear is required for colder conditions and for more advanced students as they progress in their river-running skills and safety awareness, but these Six Essentials will get you started:

Equipment – The Six Essentials Zoo Town Surfers does not provide equipment, but Jason can recommend what gear a student will need and where the equipment may be purchased most readily and economically. If you ask any of the Missoula kayaking shops for the “Zoo Town Surfer Package” or the “Zoo Town Surfer Six Essentials” their whitewater kayaking salesperson will be able to assist you. For beginners who are looking to take-up the sport (or intermediates trying to remember all of their gear), the following items are what we call the Six Essentials. The Six Essentials will get you started, but for colder conditions and as students progress additional gear may be required.

Paddling Gear - Six Essentials

1) PFD - Type III Coast Guard Approved

2) Helmet - providing good protection across the forehead, and fitting securely on the head

3) Spray skirt

4) Paddle - with a forty-five degree offset, or less

5) Kayak

6) Booties - providing the ability to walk on sharp rocks, while also fitting into your kayak

Other Recommended Gear

These items become necessary as a kayaker progresses to more challenging whitewater and weather

conditions.

A Paddling Top – for summer conditions a shortie is adequate, but for spring and fall a dry-top is necessary.

Several layers of polypro or capilene in varying thickness, or neoprene, whatever you need to stay warm for

multiple hours of paddling on a cold drizzly day in the Northwest.

Neoprene Shorts or Long Underwear Bottoms – polypro or capilene

Throw Rope -50-60 feet in length and convenient to carry

Swim Cap/Gloves/Mittens

Earplugs - Are very important to the future health of any paddler's ears. In certain conditions these items are

essential for team safety on the river. Therefore, expect your instructor to ask you to accompany the shuttle

vehicle to the takeout if you don’t have these items at the put-in when they are necessary.

6. In the event that I file a lawsuit against ZTS, I agree to do so solely in the State of Montana, and I further agree that the substantive law of that state shall apply in that action without regard to the conflict of law rules of that state. I agree that in any portion of this agreement is found to be void or unenforceable, the remaining portion shall remain in force and effect.

By signing this document, I acknowledge that if anyone is hurt or property is damaged during my participation in this activity, I may be found by a court of law to have waived my right to maintain a lawsuit against ZTS on the basis of any claim from which I have released them herein. ZTS Medical Form

General Information for the Medical Professional Zoo Town Surfers (ZTS) is a development program for young whitewater kayakers. From mid-May to mid-September the club takes weekly outings to the Clark Fork River, Blackfoot River, and Frenchtown Pond, as well as several scheduled out-of-town trips to rivers in Montana, Wyoming, and Canada.

Page 10: 2017 Youth Packet - Zoo Town Surfers€¦ · ___Load and Unload the Van Unassisted. ... including such claims which allege negligent acts or omissions of ZTS. 4. ... and agree to

ZTS participants must be physically, emotionally, and mentally prepared for the rigors of whitewater kayaking 2 – 6 hours a day. During the early and later portions of the season this activity may be in cold and/or wet conditions. These outings can often require hiking into and out of river corridors carrying all the necessary personal equipment, and may include participation in a rescue scenario if one should occur. Out-of-town trips may also necessitate daily living in new and unusual outdoor environments and in some cases may be within several hours of a medical facility. Zoo Town Surfers is a drug and alcohol-free program and all students with behavioral or psychological concerns will need to disclose their history prior to participation. Please consider the above information while completing this form. The ultimate well-being of the student and his or her fellow students is the club’s first priority. Any concerns regarding the enclosed information will be discussed with the candidate, prior to the student’s participation in the Zoo Town Surfers program.
