SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

From 1969-1979, the master choreographer and dancer Bob Fosse directed three musical dramas that eschewed the optimism of the Hollywood golden era musicals, fi lms that had deeply infl uenced him. With his own feature fi lm work, Fossae embraced a grittier aesthetic, and explore the dark side of artistic drive and the corrupting power of money and stardom. Fosse’s decidedly grim outlook, paired with his brilliance as a director and choreographer, lent a strange beauty and mystery to his marvelous dark musicals.
This series includes SWEET CHARITY, CABARET, and ALL THAT JAZZ.

Filmmakers have long recognized that cinema is a doorway to the metaphysical, and that the immersive nature of the medium can bring us closer to the spiritual realm. Inspired by the release of Texas fi lmmaker David Lowery’s A GHOST STORY, in which ghosts confront the profound mystery of time, we selected four global masterpieces from cinema history that also conjure the spirits. These transcendent fi lms, which deal with existential questions in creative and enlightening ways, are in and of themselves captivating, spiritual experiences for the audience.
This series includes THE MIRROR, SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS, THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE, and SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY.

Though they shared a profession and were contemporaries, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were notorious enemies. Both were fi ne actresses, and both had long careers that went through many seasons, from their years of radiant youth, through to their critically acclaimed peak years, and, much later, as stars of horror and thriller fi lms in the PSYCHO mold. For this Essential Cinema series we lightly scratch the surface of these remarkable careers. Naturally we conclude it with the fi lm that brought their rivalry to a screaming climax, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?
Celebrate LGBTQ Pride with MOVIE MADNESS: BETTE VS. JOAN, a campy cocktail event and special screening of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? Friday, August 25. Details and ticket info coming soon at austinfi lm.org.
This series includes EX-LADY, GRAND HOTEL, JEZEBEL, MILDRED PIERCE, and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE.

Eric Rohmer made intellectual fi lms on the canvas of human experience. These are deeply felt and considered stories about the lives of everyday people, which are captivating in their character’s introspection, passion, delusions, mistakes and grace. His moral tales, a collection of fi lms made over a decade between the early 1960s and 1970s, elicits one of the most essential human desires, to love and be loved. Bound in myriad other concerns, and ultimately, choices, the essential is never so simple. Endlessly infl uential on the fi lmmakers that followed him, Rohmer is a fi lmmaker to discover and return to over and over again.
This series includes SUZANNE’S CAREER, THE BAKERY GIRL OF MONCEAU, THE COLLECTIONEUSE, MY NIGHT AT MAUD’S, CLAIRE’S KNEE, and LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON.
