Board of Directors Hospice Calgary is thankful for our 15-member Board of Directors who provide leadership, guidance, and support for our mission.

For over 30 years, Hospice Calgary board members, staff, and volunteers have demonstrated their commitment to our mission: to help families and individuals achieve support, hope, and well-being through compassionate end-of-life and bereavement care.

Through community support and collaborations, we have grown our core services to include four centres of excellence: Rosedale Hospice, Community Hospice Services at Sage Centre, Children’s Grief Centre, and Education Services.

When we look back at the last year, it will be remembered as the year of significant changes. Three incredible women from the senior leadership team said farewell to Hospice Calgary and left an indelible mark on all our hearts. Our Executive Director Sarah Walker retired after 28 incredible years. Her vision, leadership, and commitment to the organization, built a solid foundation for the future. The Board and senior leadership team worked with the executive search firm Stanton Chase, to recruit our new ED, Karen McCullagh who started with us in January of this year. Alison Potter, our Director of Clinical Care at Rosedale also set her sights on retirement after 9 years of service and we welcomed Erin Forsyth, who has made the transition as the new DCC seamless for staff and patients alike. We also said goodbye to Dr. Laurie Lemieux, our Medical Director who passionately served the patients of Rosedale for almost a decade. Laurie took a position at the Cummins School of Medicine and Dr. Kim Finvers, a regular on the floor at Rosedale Hospice, took on the challenge. We also said goodbye to Trish Stewart and Jeanne Bunka, two key administrative staff who both retired after 22 incredible years each with Hospice Calgary.

Throughout these changes, our team has held fast and steady. We are excited and optimistic about what lies ahead for the organization. We continue to evolve and grow as our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to identify and respond to the changing needs of our community. After years of dreaming, we began the tactical work to officially launch the Children’s Grief Centre. Throughout 2018-2019, we reached out to the community for support to kick-start an ambitious 3 million-dollar fundraising campaign to launch and operate our Children’s Grief Centre. The Randy O’Dell Estate and Paramount Resources were the first to answer the call. We will continue to seek support to reach our campaign goal, as we build toward reaching the vision of the Children’s Grief Centre!

On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank everyone who has supported Hospice Calgary over the years. Your contributions of time, energy, and resources have positioned Hospice Calgary to grow and respond to our community’s needs. A special thank you to incredible 70+ staff and 200+ volunteers who help us build on the success of the last three decades.

We continue to rely on the generosity of individuals, the government, and corporate donors to keep our doors open and our services accessible. Today, we need you! Tomorrow, you or someone you love may need us. I invite you to join us!

Our Volunteers

Volunteers are an integral and valued part of Hospice Calgary. From giving a few hours to making a life-long commitment, volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Our volunteers help us support our patients and clients through:

• Providing care and comfort• Supporting fundraising efforts • Administration and reception roles• Involvement on special event committees• Service on our Board of Directors and committees• Participation in our Ambassador Program

WESTERN LEGACY AWARD WINNER 2018Last Fall, our 12 Living With Cancer Program volunteers were selected as the winners of the Calgary Stampede 2018 Western Legacy Award in the category of Sustained Contribution for a Group.

The volunteers assist with all activities while also providing comfort and support to the participants. Every Wednesday, our volunteers share heartfelt connections (and laughter too) with our clients. Hospice Calgary ‘salutes’ our volunteers -- their service and compassion benefits us all.

DIGNITY QUILT FOR ROSEDALE HOSPICEFive inspiring women volunteered their skills and time to create a Dignity Quilt that is placed over patients for their final journey out of Rosedale Hospice. The handcrafted quilt shares a resemblance in its pattern to the strikingly beautiful stained glass window in our chapel. The Dignity Quilt is next to the Memory Lamp on a handcrafted quilt stand. Thank you to our quilt committee and stand carver for these generous and thoughtful additions to our home.

I was touched by the rituals observed after death. I felt that my husband was taken care of with such

gentleness and respect. The memory card, book and lamp along with the beautiful quilted shroud also added dignity

to the occasion and helped me say goodbye to him.-- Rosedale Hospice family member

Education

In March 2019, we launched a new Education Program entitled “Dying to Know.” The first session called Facing Advancing Illness Together was sold out with 55 registrants.

Rosedale Hospice provides 24-hour palliative care to adults with cancer who are nearing the end-of-life. Our 7-bed home-like environment is located in the quiet Calgary community of Rosedale. Over the past year, Rosedale Hospice has undergone some major renovations to accommodate more office spaces, a family quiet room, and a reception area that is bright, warm, and welcoming for families and visitors.

Our interdisciplinary healthcare team cares for patients and their family members in a supportive environment. Rosedale Hospice is a place where patients can focus on quality time with family and friends.

Our CounsellingTeam

Hospice Calgary offers individual and family counselling sessions, group programs, and in-home support.

Individuals and families who access the support through Hospice Calgary are guided through a service experience that suits their unique circumstances. We know that:

• there is a continuum of grief for each individual experience of loss• people may access services at different points on the continuum• a person’s movement on the continuum may not be linear• grief takes time -- we support people as long as needed

Introducing Children’s Grief Centre

No Child Will Grieve AloneThe Vision: The Children’s Grief Centre will be nationally recognized as a leading provider of compassionate support and education.

childrensgriefcentre.ca

Why a Children’s Grief Centre?

When left untreated, adverse childhood experiences can lead to mental health issues later in life. The Children’s Grief Centre will provide support when needed, where needed, for as long as needed.

We provide the right help at the right time.

We hear too often “we didn’t know your services included grief counselling” or “we didn’t think to call a hospice for grief support”. The Children’s Grief Centre brand will help people find us easily when tragedy strikes.

People will know who to call.

There is a growing demand for our services.

Last year over 2,000 children, teens and parents accessed our services – nearly doubling our clients since 2011! Research suggests there are 12,000 kids in Calgary grieving the death of a parent. That doesn’t include those grieving a sibling, friend, or other family member. Let’s make sure they all get the help they need.

We are Rebranding our Child & Family Grief ServicesAs of June 2019, our Child & Family Grief Services will be known as the Children’s Grief Centre with the hope that more grieving families will easily find us and get the support they need.

Hospice Calgary has been serving grieving kids since 1991
