Paul Sather enters his ninth year at the helm for the Wolves in 2018-19. Sather, who is the 22nd head men’s basketball coach at Northern State, is a 1996 graduate of NSU. Sather has compiled a 162-82 record while at Northern.

Sather brought the program to new heights in 2017-18 with the Wolves finishing at the NCAA National Finalist after just the second trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in school history. The runner-up finish is the highest for any NSU team to date at the NCAA Division II level. Northern broke the single season school record for wins going 36-6 on the year, while tying the school record with 18 consecutive victories in the opening months of the season. He was named both the NSIC and NABC Central Region Coach of the year. Four Wolves were named to the NSIC All-Conference teams (Smith, Pollard, Peterka, Doyle), while Ian Smith was named to the NABC and D2CCA All-Region teams.

Sather recorded the first conference championship of his coaching career, and the first for Northern State since the 2002-03 season. Northern then went on to win the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament, notching the first championship for the program since 2005. The Wolves finished the regular season leading the NSIC in scoring defense (66.8), scoring margin (+14.6), field goal percentage defense (43.5), and rebounding margin (+9.3). Northern ranks nationally sitting top-20 in scoring defense (66.1) and rebounding margin (+7.8), top-10 in scoring margin (+14.1), and top-5 in field goal percentage (51.2).

In 2016-17 the Wolves finished tied for second in the overall league standings with Southwest Minnesota State, finishing 22-8 overall and 17-5 in the NSIC. Three Wolves garnered All-NSIC honors as Logan Doyle was named the NSIC Newcomer of the year and to the NSIC first team, and Ian Smith and Mack Arvidson were named to the NSIC second team. Northern State junior DJ Pollard was named the NSIC Elite 18 recipient holding the top GPA from the NSIC Championships with a 3.96 mark.

In his sixth season at the helm Sather landed two on the All-NSIC second team in senior Skye Warwick and junior Darin Peterka. The Wolves also tallied an upset victory over then No. 1 Augustana 90-81.

In 2014-15 he led the Wolves to their first NCAA Regional appearance since the 2008-09 season. Sather and the Wolves went 23-9 on the year with a fourth place finish in the NSIC, and second place finish in the NSIC North. Seniors Seth Bachand and Tydan Storrusten were named to the NSIC First and Second Team’s in 2014-15. In 2012-13, Sather led Northern to its first 20-win season since 2007-08. The Wolves went 20-11 overall and their 14 conference wins in ‘12-’13, was the first time since 2008-09 that the Wolves had double-digit NSIC victories. In his short tenure with the Wolves, Sather has also coached nine 1,000-point scorers at NSU in Collin Pryor, Dustin Tetzlaff, Seth Bachand, Skye Warwick, DJ Pollard, Mack Arvidson, Darin Peterka, Carter Evans, and Ian Smith. Prior to arriving back in Aberdeen, Sather spent five years as the head coach at Black Hills State, guiding the Yellow Jackets to a 94-62 record during his time there before returning to NSU. Sather was instrumental in turning the BHSU program around from a 10-19 season in 2006-07 to an NAIA Final Four contender in 2008-09. The Yellow Jackets also qualified for the national tournament in 2009-10 and compiled an overall conference record of 46-25 in the five years under Sather, including winning two Dakota Athletic Conference championships. As an assistant for the Wolves in the early years of his career, Sather was a part of three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) regular season championships and NSU’s first ever NSIC Tournament Championship. After earning his bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1996 from Northern State University, he served as physical education teacher and assistant boys’ basketball coach at Sidney High School in Nebraska from 1996-1997. The following year he was a graduate assistant at Wayne State College while he earned his master’s degree in sports administration. Originally from Princeton, Minn., Sather had a stellar career collegiate career as a Wolf from 1990-1994. He was team captain for the NSU when they earned back-to-back national runner-up finishes in 1993 and 1994. Sather resides in Aberdeen with his wife Kelsie and their two children, Sam and Becca.

Jamie Stevens will begin his first season with the Wolves men’s basketball program in the fall of 2018, after being named the team’s assistant in May. Stevens joins the Wolves after spending the last seven seasons as the head men’s basketball coach at Montana State University Billings.

In his seven seasons, the Yellowjackets went 89-113 overall, and advanced to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017. In 2012, MSUB went 18-12 to claim the program’s first GNAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his time at MSU Billings, Stevens spent four seasons at Central Wyoming College, where he resurrected a program that had been out of existence for nearly two decades. In the three competition years under his guidance, CWC compiled a 53-39 record with three consecutive winning seasons. In his first season the team finished 19-11 and tied for first in sub-region play, earning Stevens the Wyoming Community College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. In 2010-11 the Rustlers finished 17-15 overall and advanced to the second round of the Region IX Tournament in Norfolk, Neb. Under Stevens, numerous players earned postseason recognitions as six players earned all-conference honors and two earned all-region honors. His inaugural team (2008-09) also carried a 3.17 team GPA that earned them a National Academic Team of the Year distinction by the NNJCAA. Stevens began his coaching career as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the Colorado School of Mines for six seasons. During the 2005-06 season, Stevens was a part of an Oredigger squad that had a 15-14 overall record and advanced to the RMAC/Wells Fargo Shootout after an opening round victory in the conference quarterfinals. It was the first win in the RMAC tournament for Mines since 1996. He played collegiately at Montana State University Billings from 1994-99 and is known as one of the most prolific passers in the programs history. In four seasons, Stevens set records for most assists in a game (16) and in a career (805), and also left the school with the most career steals (167). Stevens helped the Yellowjackets to a Pacific West Conference championship during the 1995-96 season and a trip to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 during the 1996-97 season. His play and dedication to the program earned him induction into the Eastern Montana College/Montana State University Billings Athletic Hall of Fame in February of 2008. Jamie and his wife Sarah, as well as his three daughters, Clara, Marcella, and Catie, will move to Aberdeen.

Zach Horstman enters his third season overall, and first as a full time assistant with the Wolves in the fall of 2018. He spent the previous two seasons as the men’s basketball graduate assistant.

In his first two seasons on staff, NSU went 58-12 overall and 37-7 in the Northern Sun. Horstman played a crucial part in the Wolves NCAA Elite 8 run this past season, as the team set a school record with 36 wins. Horstman worked primarily with the Wolves ‘bigs’, Carter Evans and Logan Doyle, who both ranked in the top-10 all-time in single season field goal percentage. Doyle was named to the NSIC All-Conference second team, NCAA Central Region All-Tournament team, and NCAA Elite 8 All-Tournament team. Horstman was involved in game prep and opponent scouting throughout the regular and post-season, as well as the recruiting efforts for the four incoming freshman in 2018-19. He planned and implemented team travel arrangements, in addition to academic hours and team study. The Winner native began his coaching career on staff at the Sanford Pentagon working with a middle school team, as well as on-site and satellite camps through the venue. Horstman is a graduate of South Dakota State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. As a member of the Jackrabbit basketball squad, he appeared in 106 games. Horstman tallied 347 career points, while shooting 42.6 percent from the floor, 31.4 percent from the arch, and 68.4 percent from the foul line. He is also a 2018 graduate of Northern State with a master’s degree in sport performance and leadership. Horstman was a 4-year All-Big Dakota Conference selection and the 2011 South Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year. He was also honored as the co-Mr. Basketball and the Argus Leader Player of the Year.

Brad “BC” Christenson begins his 27th year as an assistant coach for the Northern State men’s basketball team in 2018-19.

During his previous 26 years he has worked with head coaches Bob Olson, Don Meyer and current Wolves head coach Paul Sather. With BC’s help NSU has seen a tremendous amount of success including last year’s historic run by the Wolves. The 36 wins by the Wolves last season marks its highest win total in school history and the national runner-up finish is the highest for any Northern team since its inception into the NCAA Division II level.

In total, BC has been a part of nine conference championships, three conference tournament championships, ten NCAA Regional Tournaments, four NCAA Regional Finals, two NCAA Elite Eights and three NAIA National Tournaments where the Wolves made the Final Four all three years finishing as the National Runners-up twice.

Christenson earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration (1989) and Master’s degree in professional accountancy (1990) from the University of South Dakota. He received his teacher certification from NSU in 1993. In addition to his duties at Northern, Christenson has also been a math teacher at Aberdeen Central for the past 25 years.
