A Message From Matt...As I reflected over the last twelve months about what I wanted to share with you in this annual letter, I thought about the

number of people who are chronically hungry each day, the number of meals that we’ve provided, the number of children

served, the number of volunteer hours graciously given and the number of donors that have supported us along the way.

So many great things to report on. So many.

To help illustrate your impact, let me tell you about Alessandra, featured on the front cover.

Alessandra was barely 9 years old when her photo was taken at our food pantry. Even at that tender age, she knows how

much Feeding South Dakota means to her parents. She enjoys visiting our food pantry. When asked about her favorite healthy

food, she doesn’t hesitate: “Salad and apples. But . . . candy is my favorite.”

Of course, every child loves treats. That’s why Alessandra’s mom and dad, Marissa and Oliver, are grateful for the fresh

produce. “We couldn’t afford this healthy food on our own. We’re so grateful they help us eat right,” Marissa explains.

The family has been struggling since Oliver was laid off from his job in the granite industry. Even though Marissa remains

steadily employed as a housekeeper, money is very tight. “We never needed to ask for anything before. But Oliver was the

primary breadwinner,” she explains. “Feeding South Dakota helps us so much, especially during

those last few days before payday.”

Oliver adds: “While I’m searching for a new job, this place makes a huge difference for us.

Because we receive this food, we have money for other things — bills, gas, utilities. I’m really

grateful. I don’t know what we’d do without this help, so I just want to say ‘thank you’

to everyone who gives.”

The big smile on that precious child’s face makes every day better knowing that we’re

making a difference in her life.

Thank you from all of us for showing kindness to this struggling family and

so many other South Dakotans in need. As you can see, your

generous support makes a crucial, life-changing difference.
