DECISION MAKING AND NEGOTIATIONS UNDER UNCERTAINTY
COURSE CODE MKGM MK102 FIELD Management PROFESSOR Ayse Önculer EVALUATION Graded NUMBER OF ECTS 3 PERIOD T0 – SEPTEMBER (BLOCKED WEEK)
Course Aim
The goal of this course is to analyse and improve managerial decision-making and
negotiations under uncertainty. Decision-making in risky situations has become a key
challenge facing today’s corporations. Often, managers and negotiators tend to avoid hard
data and rely on their intuition to make decisions, especially when faced with insufficient
information and severe time constraints. However, in doing so, they exhibit various
systematic biases in framing problems, in seeking information, and in communicating their
interests in a negotiations setting. Managers, consumers, investors, and professional
negotiators all fall into such decision traps. We will highlight the cognitive processes
behind such biases and provide insights for improving decision-making and negotiations.
Course Objective / Learning Goals
Deciding in uncertainty
Managing complex situations
Thinking out of the box
Learning to listen
Creating value

Objectives and Learning Goals
This course has the following objectives:
1. To understand Entrepreneurship as a social phenomenon and career choice
2. To understand the challenges of Entrepreneurship and strategies for dealing with them
3. To explore the potential of entrepreneurship in one’s own personal and professional
objectives.
The course will use a combination of lectures, case discussions and practical exercises. While
the lectures have as their objective to help you to have a solid understanding of the origins and
logic of Entrepreneurship, case examples as well as practical exercises will make these
theoretical objectives as concrete as possible. You will be asked – in team – to test and reflect
upon the insights inside the classroom in two ways:
1. Opportunity assessment: you will be asked to develop an idea and test its potential by
a. Making a first “sale” in a very short time
b. Identifying the critical questions that would require your attention for further
development of the idea
2. Case study: you will be asked to interview an entrepreneur and write up a case study of
his/her entrepreneurial experience.
In addition, I will ask you to personally reflect on the insights gathered in the course and write
that up in a short document. Finally, I expect you to be present in class, both physically and in
participating in class discussions.

PERIOD T2
Introduction for CSR
This course aims to provide students with a practical and theoretical understanding of the
growing field of Corporate Social Responsibility, with particular focus in measurement and
control. While in the last few years, many business schools have been developing courses
in in CSR, the study of CSR in the context of Accounting and Control is indeed a novelty.
Consequently, this course brings fresh, groundbreaking perspectives that are uncommon in
Accounting and Control.
Objectives for CSR
Students are invited to reflect and consider the measurement and control of CSR,
particularly how emerging appraisal tools aim to capture the diverse (and frequently
elusive) attributes of CSR.
These measuring devices can be used both from an internal point of view (Management
Control approach) and from an external focus (Reporting or Accountability purposes).
Thus, this course aims to analyze the fields of corporate social reporting, responsibility and
accountability in the context of sustainable development.
Informed opinion on the corporation-society relationship
Introduction for Ethics
The course aims at helping the participants understanding the decision-making processes
on real time. Too often ethics are evaluated on the basis of past errors and wrongdoings.
Approaching ethics on the basis of on real time decision-making processes contributes to
preventing errors and misconducts in the future.
It is worth noticing from now on that considered in this perspective, ethics cannot be
separated from organization and managerial issues. The main question to ask becomes: how
is it possible to manage organizations and people so as to avoid wrong decisions?
Objectives and learning goals for Ethics
The course provides students with an opportunity to hone their personal understanding of
decision-making through questioning their own experiences, and through an inquiry into
the foundations of ethics and the analysis that arise in a wide range of business practices,
both domestically and globally.
The central aim of the course is to enable students to develop a framework to bridge
individual leadership and corporate accountability and help them to make the best possible
decisions in the future.
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING
COURSE CODE CPTC CP101
FIELD Accounting and Management Control
PROFESSOR Andrei Filip / Thomas Jeanjean
EVALUATION Graded
NUMBER OF ECTS 3
PERIOD T1
Course Aim
During this course, we will explore the nature and use of financial reporting for business
entities. The underpinning conceptual framework is that of ‘decision usefulness’; i.e. that
the primary purpose of financial reporting is to provide useful information to shareholders.
The legal and regulatory frameworks within which such information is produced are
reviewed, as are the strengths and limitations of published financial statements.
The approach is based on the following ideas:
- We adopt a user perspective, rather than a producer one, because most of you will
become users of financial statements, internal (managers, executives) or external
(investors, analysts, consultants…), rather than preparers of financial statements.
- When faced with a complex problem, we begin examining the problem by a general
overview of the possible solutions and what impact they will have on a company’s
financial decisions. This requires an a-national or non-national approach--it is more
useful to take time explaining the various possible solutions than studying the way a
particular country handles the issue. In the first part of the course, all the developments
are not based on a specific country nor on specific accounting standards but on a generic
country.
Note: No prior knowledge of accounting is required to follow and to understand the content
of this course.
Course Objective / Learning Goals
By the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Critically evaluate conventional understandings of the role(s) and purpose(s) of
financial statements in meeting the information needs of stakeholder groups;
2. Appreciate the use of accounting information for external decision-making;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for, and content of, a number of
international financial reporting standards;
4. Recognize the impact of accounting policy choices, and
5. Undertake detailed appraisals of corporate performance based on financial statements,
including the use of traditional and cash-flow based accounting ratios.

MANAGEMENT OF PEOPLE AT WORK
COURSE CODE MGTP MG101 FIELD Management PROFESSOR Aarti Ramaswami EVALUATION Graded NUMBER OF ECTS 3 PERIOD T0 – SEPTEMBER (BLOCKED WEEK)
Course Aim
This course is designed to provide an overview of theories, research, and practice in
managing people in business organizations. This course is based on the premise that all
students pursuing a master’s degree in business should study and be able to critically
evaluate management practices that relate to the effective utilization of human resources
and the interaction of these practices with the overall strategy of the firm. This
knowledge/skill set, it is argued, is just as central to being an effective business leader as
knowledge/skill sets that relate to managing financial assets, technology, product
development and sales, or the strategic position of the firm. The course is targeted toward
the business manager and not human resource functional specialists. The concepts
covered in this course will help students better understand how to motivate and lead those
you manage as well as better understand their own motivation and performance at work.
Course Objective
In many ways, this course is designed to make you a better manager of people and a better
consumer of services provided by people management professionals and consultants.
After completing this course, students will be better able to:
describe and understand the domain of people management practices most likely to
positively affect organizational performance
critically evaluate the nature and quality of people management practices and their
applicability
develop skill-sets necessary for strategically recruiting, selecting, developing,
evaluating, and retaining employees
Learning Goals
Managing complex situations
Learning from failure and success
Communicating across cultural boundaries
Learning to listen
Developing analytical excellence in problem-solving, conceptual clarity, and
managing information
