What is the Southard Award?

The Southard Award is the School of Art and Design’s most prestigious competition. Students submit a written proposal selected for a public presentation of current scholarly research or creative work. The objective for the competitive process is provide students with an opportunity to develop the materials, documentation and conceptual sophistication, needed to pursue advanced academic or professional opportunities upon graduation from UNC.

Jury Process

A faculty panel and guest juror (TBA), will review completed proposals.

The top four selected proposals will proceed to a semi-finalist round. Semi-finalists will present their proposal in person to the panel for the final selection on Friday, November 16th from 10am-12pm in Guggenheim Hall, Room 001.

Of the four presentations, one will be selected as this year’s Award Winner. Each semi-finalist will receive a $150.00 scholarship award.

The Award Winner of the competition will receive a scholarship award of $3,500.00.

The winner is required to present a professional 5-8-minute lecture at the Southard Convocation Lunch in January.

Oct 15th by 5pm MST: DEADLINE TO SUBMIT MATERIALS

Oct 22nd: Semifinalists Announced

Nov 9th: Semifinalists must submit an outline 5-8- minute presentation to Pam Campanaro, Gallery Director:

Nov 16th: Semifinalist Presentations Presentations will be held in Guggenheim Hall, Room 001

10am-12pm *All presenters are required to stay the entire time to hear and support their fellow semi-finalists.

All submissions must be saved as PDFs.Hard copy submissions will not be accepted or returned. Students interested in applying must submit all the following- Incomplete submissions will NOT be reviewed:

For Visual Artists:

• A current artist statement• A current resume• 8-12 high resolution images *INCLUDING any detail images

(100 dpi, 9 inches on the longest dimension & in Jpeg format)

Images must be saved in the following format:

• First name_lastname_ 01 (ex. Pam_Campanaro_01, Pam_Campanaro_02…). Your images should be: 100 dpi, 9 inches on the longest dimension, & in Jpg format.

•An image title list (List images exactly at you titled the files. Also include title of work, medium, size, and date completed.

* The 3 written docs (resume, statement, and image list) should be sent as ONE PDF.

* 8-12 images should NOT be sent as embedded images within the PDF, but asseparate jpegs.

* Too big to email? Use wetransfer.com to send large sized files.
