Welcome to Agrow’s special supplement for the eleventh Agrow Awards. The best in the crop protection industry gathered in London on November 12th to take stock of their achievements in the past year.

The day began with the Crop Protection Leaders’ Forum. Presenters from Phillips McDougall and Agrow provided a comprehensive view of the crop protection market during 2018. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion in which experts from top companies globally discussed factors impacting the industry and future trends.

The Awards were instituted in 2007 to provide a medium to companies around the world to showcase their expertise and creativity on a global platform. With the Agrow stamp of approval behind them, they were quickly established as a highly-coveted symbol of excellence. As was evident from the shortlist, there was a broad diversity within the applications. Competition was especially intense in some categories, and we were forced to accommodate more than our stipulated maximum of five per category.

Corteva collected the award for Best New Crop Protection Product or Trait for its broad-spectrum herbicide, florpyrauxifen-benzyl (trade-marked as Rinskor). It controls important grass, sedge and broadleaf weeds in rice and its differentiated mode of action controls resistant weeds at a fraction of the rate of other commonly used herbicides. ChemChina subsidiary Syngenta was highly commended for its fungicide, Miravis Duo (pydiflumetofen – trade-marked as Adepidyn + difenoconazole).

The Best Packaging Innovation award went to Corteva for its Lumigen System Keg seed treatment package. It is a novel system that provides multiple advantages over the standard round drum that was typical for packaging these products.

Corteva also featured in the Best Industry Collaboration alongside Eli Lilly and the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute. The partnership developed a new toxicogenomics platform to advance chemical product hazards. The judges

commended a collaboration between Marrone Bio Innovations and Evogene.

The award for Best R&D Pipeline went to FMC. With the acquisition of the former DuPont Crop Protection discovery organisation and pipeline, FMC transformed its licensing and development-based R&D model for crop protection chemicals into a discovery and development engine immediately competitive with other major discovery-based companies.

FMC also collected the award for Best Application Technology Innovation. 3RIVE 3D is a patent-pending system designed to deliver low volumes of crop protection solutions to the furrow during planting. Spanish company Atens’ microbial-based seed coating, Covenant, was highly commended.

BASF picked up two awards on the night. It won Best Marketing Campaign for “Fly with BASF”, a programme than bundles the company’s fungicides with drone spray application for larger-scale rice and wheat farmers in China. The launch of Spanish company Seipasa’s Pirecris bioinsecticide was worthy of a judges’ commendation in this category. BASF India’s flagship “Suraksha Hamesha” training programmes and “Sanrakshan Kit” (safety kit) won the award for Best Stewardship Programme. They are aimed at educating and increasing safety awareness among

DowDuPont’s agriculture business, Corteva Agriscience, and FMC each featured as award winners in three categories of the 11th Agrow Awards at a prestigious ceremony in London, UK last night. Quite fittingly, the Lifetime Achievement Award went to William Barnet, a driving force in the development of a number of products at DuPont and now with FMC. Among his many achievements in a nearly 40-year career with DuPont, he led the development of manufacturing processes for the insecticides, chlorantraniliprole (trade-marked as Rynaxypyr) and cyantraniliprole (trade-marked as Cyazypyr).

farmers and sprayers. This hotly contested category received no fewer than three judges’ commendations: Corteva’s Brazil and Paraguay agricultural initiatives; CropLife Asia’s Chanthaburi pollinator project; and the European Crop Protection Association’s TOPPS water protection.

The award for Best Formulation Innovation went to ChemChina subsidiary Syngenta. The company’s fungicide, Ampexio WG Pepite (mandipropamid + zoxamide), is a patented formulation delivering synergistic activity and highly consistent control of grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) in Europe. BASF’s Selontra rodent bait and FMC’s 3RIVE 3D formulation technology were highly commended.

Marrone Bio Innovations won the award for Best New Biological Product

(Biopesticide) with its bioinsecticide, Venerate, which is based on a non-living new species of the bacterium, Burkholderia rinojensis. Judges’ commendations went to Eastman’s Cedroz and Seipasa’s Seican. The award for Best New Biological Product (Biostimulant) went to Plant Health Care for ProAct. It stimulates mobilisation of calcium within the plant, preferentially accumulating the mineral in the plant cell wall as calcium pectate. Mahindra Agri Solutions received a commendation for Jingo NXG.

The Best Public Outreach Programme award went to Bayer’s Crop Science division for its Transparency in Crop Science scheme. It is seeking to restore trust in scientific integrity through the publication of safety studies on its crop protection products.

The first winner of a new category, Best Innovation in Digital Farming Technology, was Cropin Technology Solutions. Its SmartFarm farm management solution enables complete digitisation of farms, empowers data-driven decision-making, provides complete visibility of people, processes and field performance, along with the capability to trace and predict output.

The Best Company from an Emerging Region was Willowood Chemical and the Best Supplier was Jiangsu Yangnong Chemical, with a commendation for Gharda Chemicals. The award for Best Supporting Role went to Enviresearch, with Compliance Services International being highly commended. UPL’s global portfolio lead (fungicides), Shrenik Mehta, collected the award for Best Manager with Strategic Vision.

The award recognises initiatives made between January 1st 2017 and April 30th 2018.

“I have been an avid participant in the Agrow Awards since their inauguration in 2007. I have submitted many nominations and have accepted awards on others’ behalf. But never did I expect to be the recipient of the 2018 Lifetime Achievement award and I am honored to join such a select group of past awardees.
