2018 Masterclass The Figure in Context Masterclass with Chelsea Lehmann 9.30am - 4.30pm | 12 – 14 January 2018 Chelsea Lehmann has a Bachelor of Visual Art (Hons) from Adelaide Central School of Art (1998) and was a visiting scholar at Glasgow School of Art, Scotland (1999) courtesy of the Ruth Tuck Scholarship. She has a Master of Fine Art (Research) from the College of Fine Arts, UNSW (2007) and is currently a PhD candidate at UNSW Art & Design supported by the Australian Postgraduate Award. Two models will pose amongst objects of various size, shape and colour. Participants will develop several studies emphasising composition, cropping and the spatial attributes of the set- up. Beginning with an underpainting in Burnt Sienna acrylic paint, the painting will be developed using oil or acrylic paint with individual direction from the lecturer. Over the course of the masterclass some objects will be removed while the models stay in position. Conceptually, we will focus on the idea of ‘presence and absence’: in practical terms this will involve processes of addition and removal, rigorous editing, and the exploration of a broad range of painting techniques. Masterclass Fee Policy1 To secure a place in a masterclass a $100 non-refundable deposit is

required upon enrolment (on or before Friday 22 December 2017) with the balance of fees to be paid by Friday 5 January 2018

2 Preference for places will be given to in order of enrolment.3 No refund will be given for absenteeism or for withdrawal after

5 January 2018.4 Masterclass fee includes GST.5 For withdrawal before 5 January 2018, fees paid will be refunded

less deposit.6 Masterclasses that do not achieve enrolment targets may be

cancelled, in which case fees will be fully refunded.7 Concessions: Adelaide Central School of Art full-time students,

Adelaide Central School of Art graduates (within last 5 years) and registered teachers receive 10% discount off the masterclass fee. Evidence of teacher registration must be produced at the time of enrolment to receive the concession. No refunds will be issued for discounts after fees have been paid in full.

Summer School | 11 - 21 January 2018

Summer School offers a selection of full-day and half-day courses in drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking and collage.

These studio-based courses are designed for participants of all levels and small class sizes ensure all participants receive individual, expert attention. Most classes are held in our air-conditioned School studios on our award-winning campus with free parking available onsite.

Suggested Materials

Supports: 2 x medium sheets of oil sketch paper (or similar), 1 x good quality primed support (canvas, linen, or board); suggested dimensions 90 x 70 cm, however please consider scale and format as an important directive in your process – for instance, you may prefer to work on a series of smaller ‘studies’ with the potential to explore different formats, e.g. square, landscape or portrait.

Paints Oils or acrylic (oil paint preferred): Titanium White, Ivory Black, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Blue, Cadmium Scarlet Hue, Alizarin Crimson Hue, Cadmium Yellow (Medium or deep), Cadmium Yellow Light or Lemon Yellow. * Burnt Sienna acrylic paint (for underpainting)

Brushes: 6 small to large, flat, filbert and round bristle or synthetic brushes. (It is preferable to have at least 2 medium to large, good quality synthetic brushes). 1 5cm flat bristle brush

Oil Paint Medium: Odorless Solvent, medium(s) of your choice (eg. Liquin is a good option for faster drying), Lean Medium, Medium No. 2, 3, etc. Acrylic Medium: e.g. Drying Retarder, Flow medium, Binder Medium

Palette (flat, no wells) at least A4 size, palette knives (with neck, preferably metal not plastic), rags, sketch book, pencil, eraser, white pastel, ruler, masking/painting tape, jars with lids for solvent etc.

Optional Materials

Additional Paint Colours: Raw Umber, Brilliant Yellow or Naples Yellow, Indian Yellow, Cremnitz White or Zinc White, Permanent Rose, Violet (e.g. Cobalt, Dioxine Mauve, Permanent Mauve), Terre Verte, Viridian Green, Green-blue (e.g. Turquoise, Sapphire Blue, Manganese Blue, Cerulean Blue).
