Introduction to Bernalillo

It is my pleasure as mayor of the Town of Bernalillo to welcome you.

Our community has a rich history dating back hundreds of years. We welcome the future with open arms, yet strive to strike a balance between our storied past and the opportunities of the fu-ture. We are proud of our cultural traditions, such as the Fiestas de San Lorenzo, celebrated with a centuries old dance-drama, Los Matachines.

We are physically situated between Albu-querque and Santa Fe in

perhaps the most scenic location in the Middle Rio Grande Valley.

If a single word ac-curately describes us, it is diversity. Many of our families trace their roots to the first Spanish conquistadores, others to Native Americans who inhabited the area cen-turies prior to the first Europeans and others are more recent additions to the wonderful “tossed salad” that is Bernalillo.

Regardless of our roots, we share a common love of our community.

Our town is blessed

with an abundance of talent and opportunities. Many citizens contribute time and talent to serve our community.

Whether one chooses to serve in a volunteer capacity, run for elected office, mentor and teach youth or help out in any other way, opportunities abound to make Bernalil-lo a better community. We encourage and welcome anyone who is willing to serve in ways that fit his or her skills and time.

We have many issues that face our town, as well as many opportuni-

ties. The community is in the middle of a strong economic boom.

Over the past several years, we have experi-enced both an influx of new businesses, as well as significant growth by existing businesses.

Introduction to Corrales

New to Sandoval County?

Come see what you can discover in the tranquil Village of Corrales. We have something for everyone!

We have views of the Sandia Mountains to delight our senses and our spirits. Like an ever-changing light show, we marvel at the morning mist that reveals them, the low-hanging clouds that drape them, the snow that blankets them and is mysteriously gone hours later, and best of all, awe-inspiring sunsets.

History is alive here at the Old San Ysidro Church (now de-sanctified and serving many functions, including as a concert hall, event center and art gallery). Lovely Casa San Ysidro and its historic cemetery are open for public education.

Many farms are

sustained by water from the nearby Rio Grande through an ancient system of acequias, or irrigation ditches. Our natural setting and open space are ideal for gardeners: We can plant many varieties of flowers, cacti, fruits (when the weather cooperates) and native flowering trees — with lots of assistance from a team of Master Gardeners.

Above us all, the sprawling old cottonwoods along the acequias provide shade and startling art-worthy color in the autumn.

Our community is vibrant because of our enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers who provide us with fun activities and events throughout the year.

Our shopping experience is varied and includes seven art galleries, charming shops featuring unique items, restaurants, brew pubs, coffee shop, genuine old-fashioned mercantile and well-stocked mom ’n pop market. Antique and clothing shops and consignment stores are fun to peruse and guaranteed to help you discover a well-priced “find.”

Natural health is a passion here — you’ll find a pharmacy, a nurse practitioner, an acupuncturist, chiropractors, massage studios, yoga studios, a Pilates center and lots of walking trails along the acequias to keep you fit. A growers market provides us with farm-fresh produce and healthy yummy baked goods.

Searching for local wines? Despite our small size, we have four wineries — each with award-winning wines and a lovely, relaxing view-centric patio.

Perhaps most fun of all is the Corrales Wine and Bike Tour, where locals and visitors cycle from winery to winery. No, it isn’t Napa, but it’s in our backyard.

Because we are only five miles from Balloon Fiesta Park, “balloons over Corrales” are an annual treat. It’s worth rising early to see them launch and drift out our way.

As the sun rises behind them, you will see a spectacle that few in this world have the pleasure to savor. You’ll have out-of-towners for Balloon Fiesta, for sure.

Southern Sandoval County sports

Rio Rancho has been blessed with top-notch sports facilities.

Although the bulk of them are on school campuses, Rio Rancho Sports Complex on High Resort Boulevard has tennis courts, athletic fields for soccer, lacrosse and youth football, plus Little League baseball diamonds and softball fields.

The City of Vision has two Little

Leagues, Cibola and Sunset, and information about fall and summer sign-ups can be found on their websites: cibolalittleleague.com and tshq.bluesombrero.com/sunsetbaseball. In Bernalillo, Coronado Little League info may be found on its Facebook page.

One of the best indoor sports facilities in the Southwest is Santa Ana Star Center. The Star Center is the home for the state high school volleyball and wrestling

championships, plus prep postseason basketball action.

Wrestling, hockey, boxing and even roller derby have called the Star Center home, and rodeo and bull-riding have also found it an excellent facility.

Getting back to the local high schools, state championships have become a regular occurrence in recent years. Cleveland and Rio Rancho high schools have either won or tied for the big-school mat title every year since 2007, and they have very competitive volleyball programs.

Here’s another interesting factoid: Through March 2018, the Rams or Storm have won three of the last four state football championships, played in three of the last four state basketball championship games and been in the last two state baseball championship games at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.

No slouch in basketball, Bernalillo High School’s comfy gym has been the site for post-season hoops, and longtime coach Terry Darnell took his boys team to the Class 4A state championship game

in Dreamstyle Arena on March 10, 2018, where the Spartans lost for only the second time all season.

Another option for area athletes is The MAC (McDermott Athletic Center), 801 Loma Colorado Blvd. in Rio Rancho. The MAC is a 60,000-square-foot indoor sports facility offering baseball, basketball, volleyball, ice hockey and fitness facilities, with batting cages. (892-9222; themacsports.com)

Not far from The MAC — actually between The MAC and

the RRHS campus — is the Rio Rancho Aquatic Center, for competitive and recreational swimming.

For bowlers, in addition to Starlight Lanes at Santa Ana Star Casino, you’ll find 24 synthetic lanes at Tenpins & More, 1416 Deborah Road in Rio Rancho.

And soccer fans — especially for parents of youngsters playing futbol — there is a 22-field soccer complex on Santa Ana Pueblo land; it’s had various names, but hasn’t moved: It’s about a mile north of NM 528’s intersection with US 550,

on your way to Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort.

For those who enjoy golf, there is an abundance of gorgeous, yet challenging, courses within a short drive of Rio Rancho:

• Cochiti Golf Club, 5200 Cochiti Highway in Cochiti Lake. Situated on Cochiti Pueblo land, this is an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. public golf course, ranked as one of the best golf courses in New Mexico. (465-2239)

• Desert Greens Golf Course, 10035 Country Club Lane NW, Albuquerque. This 18-hole championship course, formerly known as Paradise Hills, spans

140 acres. (898-7001)• Sandia Golf Club,

Exit 234 on Interstate-25, and go east on Tramway Boulevard. Opened in 2005, this Scott Miller-designed championship par-72 course was developed by the Pueblo of Sandia as part of the Sandia Resort and Casino. At 7,752 feet, it is the longest course in the state, yet is designed for players of all skill levels. (798-3990)

• Santa Ana Golf Course, 288 Prairie Star Road, Santa Ana Pueblo. One of America’s three-best true links-style golf courses — a 27-hole championship links-style golf course, five sets of tees on every hole;

play from 5,500 yards to 7,400 yards. (867-9464)

• Twin Warriors Golf Club, 1301 Tuyuna Trail, Bernalillo. Eighteen holes of high-desert, championship golf routed in and around 20 ancient cultural sites of previous habitation and activity. The course has grassy knolls and ridges dotted with juniper and piñon pine, all framed by spectacular views of the Sandia Mountains. (771-6155)

Rio Rancho also has a top-notch Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department, and each year it publishes three brochures (spring, summer and fall), which

give complete listings of community special events and activities for children, teens and adults. Brochures provide registration deadlines, activity dates and fees.

You’ll find various sports, aquatics, fitness camps, youth sports, Special Olympics and much more.

While supplies last, brochures are available at Star Heights Recreation Center, Haynes Community Center, Meadowlark Senior Center, Sabana Grande Recreation Center, Loma Colorado Main Library and the Parks & Rec office at City Hall. (rrnm.gov, find parks & rec under “Services” tab.)

A beer and a view for the aficionado

A structure west of the flowing waters of the Rio

Grande near the Town of Bernalillo will soon be flowing with beer.

Bosque Brewery Director of Operations Jotham Michnovicz, along with several investors, is almost finished transforming the old Jackalope building on US 550 into the new Bosque Brewery headquarters.

In 2017, the Observer met up with Michnovicz

to discuss plans for the empty iconic structure.

Now, after going through many months of red tape and overcoming structural surprises, he is optimistic about opening the brewery this summer.

“Right now, it’s just finishing the construction,” Michnovicz said. “We’ve cut through much of the red tape already, so now we are on the downward slope toward the finish line.”

He said although the building is huge, his company is already out

of space before the first day of operation has even taken place.

“We are already doing more beer production currently out of our old spot and our contract brewer than we anticipated doing when we began working on this,” Michnovicz said. “Also, our administrative team has grown so big that we need additional administrative office space so we’re not all crammed in here.”

This over-10,000-square-foot facility has

administrative offices on the second floor, along with a vaulted V.I.P. area that has a stunning view of the Sandia Mountains. Downstairs are a full kitchen and two bars, one for pick-up of to-go beer orders and another one for eat-in dining and drinking.

On the north end of the facility is a huge glass wall that allows customers to see the brewing process as they enjoy their beverages. A patio area with an access window to order beer is outside.

Michnovicz says the patio will soon be filled with benches and have a table-type bar that will wrap along the outside wall for customers to sit at and enjoy the summer weather.

On the east side of the building is a parking lot adjacent to an area that will soon have two two-story structures as available infrastructure for whatever business is interested.

As for the brewery’s workforce, Michnovicz says two brewers will be

brought in to start the process and then the company will tweak its method from there.

“Two shifts five days a week will be my guess and it will go from there,” he said. “Eventually we will probably do three shifts seven days a week. With this facility’s opening, we will have created 45 new full-time jobs.”

This projection comes because the new facility is going to be used for all of Bosque Breweries’ volume production, he said.

“All of our orders that go to our distributor will be packaged right here,” Michnovicz said.

As for the new construction planned for US 550 this year, he said the brewery will open near to the finish of the bridge-widening project.

“When they finish with the bridge construction and putting in the light in front of our spot, that will be really close to the time that we open, so I don’t think it will have too much of an impact on us,” Michnovicz said. “The light honestly was a big selling point for us, because trying to turn left out of here on 550 is so hard, especially during rush-hour traffic.”

He said the new location will have the same menu items already offered at the other brewery locations in Albuquerque.

“We are going to serve the same staple six beers that we serve in our taprooms, and all of the specialty beers that we make will be available here as well,” Michnovicz said.

They couldn’t find a table, but this felled tree in the Jemez Mountains provided seating for a lunch break for Meadowlark Senior Center members during a past hike.

The City of Rio Rancho’s Division of Senior

Services’ mission is to “promote positive aging,” still true even five decades after the city’s earliest residents were basically easterners moving here to enjoy their retirement and so-called golden years.

To start with, there’s arguably no better senior

center in the state than Meadowlark Senior Center, which feeds and entertains Rio Rancho’s older population. (In this case, “seasoned citizens” 55 and older).

There are health and wellness classes; arts and crafts classes, from crocheting to digital photography; activities (astrology to ukeles); and entertainment, from plays at Albuquerque Little Theater and dinners at

area eateries to concerts and informative talks in the dining room. Services and support include blood-pressure screening, helping recent widows/widowers deal with their losses, legal advice and financial consultation.

Ongoing activities include billiards, card games, ceramics, chess, a book club, creative writers, fly-tying and a fishing club, genealogy, dancing, Mexican

train dominoes, ping pong, scrapbooking, journaling, Spanish and woodcarving. Basically, activities run the gamut.

There’s no excuse to stop playing when you visit MSC, 4330 Meadowlark Lane, just east of its intersection with NM 528. (891-5018)

From the high desert to the mountain forest

The Jemez Mountains have a myriad of

beautiful and historical locales visitors can immerse themselves in, without ever leaving Sandoval County.

To get to the Jemez, for first-timers, take US 550 north (it’s actually more west than north and leads to the Four Corners) into San Ysidro and turn right onto NM 4, designated a National Scenic Byway in 1998.

From there, keep your eyes peeled, not only for historic sites and places to visit, picnic and camp, but also for a place to get some fry bread for the family. Now, here are some of the places to stop in the Jemez, many beloved by this writer:

The Gilman Tunnels: Two large tunnels blasted out of solid rock in the 1920s for the railroad, on which timber was hauled from the forest into Bernalillo for processing. The train tracks are long gone, but you can drive through the tunnels, park

near them and enjoy the Guadalupe River down below. Take NM 485, about 10 miles from San Ysidro, to get there.

Walatowa Visitor Center: You can learn about Jemez Pueblo, which you just passed, through informational exhibits, a museum of history and the Native Americans’ culture, as well as a nature walk and a guided hike. Plus, it has a gift shop. There’s a great, shaded picnic area on the north side of NM 4. (575-834-7235)

Jemez Springs: Don’t

look for a Walmart or a Starbucks here; the town was selected as the smallest-ever All-American City in 1995. There are bed-and-breakfasts, some craft and souvenir shops, and Los Ojos restaurant, worth a visit just for the décor — and maybe a burger and a beer.

Jemez State Monument: Tour the ruins of this ancient pueblo of the Jemez people, known as the Giusewa, along with the remains of a 17th-century Spanish mission known

as San Jose de los Jemez. (575-829-3530)

Soda Dam: A great place for the kids to get out and stretch, and play in the shallow waters of the Jemez River. Water from underground hot springs has flowed here and carved interesting niches for centuries.

Battleship Rock: A great place to take photos — the craggy rock formation of welded volcanic ash looks somewhat like a battleship — take a hike and have a picnic. There are trails here, including a two-mile jaunt through the Jemez Falls.

Fenton Lake State Park: If boating and fishing are more your style, when you get into La Cueva, which is smaller than La Cueva High School in Albuquerque, veer left onto NM 126. The picturesque lake, within a lush pine forest, is a great spot for fishing, hiking, camping (with RV hookups) and picnics. (575-829-3630)

Seven Springs Fish Hatchery: Just a few miles beyond Fenton Lake is the hatchery, where kids can catch and keep up to five trout for grilling over an evening campfire. (575-829-3740)

Spence Hot Springs:

Back on NM 4, there is a parking lot for your vehicle, and then a short hike to the popular hot mineral waters. There are naked days and non-naked days; check the signage for which day it is before donning your birthday suit.

Jemez Falls: Camping had been available here for a long time, among

the tall Ponderosa pines. The 70-foot drop of the falls is magnificent.

Valles Caldera National Preserve: A destination in itself. This 89,000-acre preserve is one of just three “super volcanoes” in the U.S.

The visitor center in the Valle Grande is open through early October; the area has myriad

fishing, hiking, biking and equestrian events.

Don’t expect to see everything in a day. Figure on at least one night, and you’ll see more stars than ever before.

It’s about 90 miles from Rio Rancho. There are also archeology, artists, geology, history and wildlife van tours. (575-829-4100/vallescaldera.gov)

Journey to the food desert: A helping agency

The frigid morning air can be seen in the breath of

volunteers gathered at St. Felix Pantry in Rio Rancho as they prepare for a trip to one of Sandoval County’s food deserts.

The group gathers a carefully crafted list of items and loads everything on the pantry’s new refrigerated truck. Today is special

because the pantry is supplying chicken, an item only offered once a month, to those in need in the town of Peña Blanca.

All of the hustle for this trip was made possible last year, when the county gave St. Felix a $160,000 grant to serve residents that live in what have been deemed “food deserts.”

“Technically, a food desert is an area where a local resident has to travel more than 50 miles to

obtain a decent selection of food,” said St. Felix board member John Schuman. “Technically speaking, neither Jemez Springs, Cuba nor Peña Blanca qualifies as a food desert, but in the context of Sandoval County, it had physical facilities we could use and that were part of the basis for our outreach.”

The mobile food pantry has been running since Jan. 15, he said, with a growing attendance due to word

of mouth.The mobile food

pantry serves three areas on alternating Mondays. One week the pantry will provide food to Jemez Springs and Cuba; then the following Monday, it will offer food to the people in Peña Blanca.

“Because of the time of the year, we are not harvesting enough fruits and vegetables from our grocery sources, and one of our goals is not to have the mobile pantry take away from

the ‘mother ship’ in Rio Rancho, so we have been buying fresh groceries to provide for those in need from our grant funds,” Schuman said.

Many of the other food items provided to residents in these remote areas are taken from the main food supply in Rio Rancho to supplement what meals have been covered by the county grant.

The mobile pantry is set up much like the permanent base in Rio Rancho, with a table of volunteers checking IDs and newcomers’ financial

status to make sure they qualify for the service.

Several tables are then lined with food already divided up, along with fresh produce bins that have numbered signs indicating the quantity each recipient can take. Many of the volunteers wait at the end of the line to help residents take their groceries to their cars.

Today, over 20 families have been fed, a record amount for Peña Blanca, according to Schuman.

“We had originally planned on paying a driver, but the drivers are

all volunteers, so we are using the excess of those funds for other food items,” he said.

John Barr, driver for today’s trip and new St. Felix volunteer, said driving the truck is the easy part.

“By the time I get to the pantry in the morning, the food has already been loaded on the pallets and is ready to go,” Barr said. “We all have our so-called jobs, but at the pantry, anyone can show up and take on a different role, dependant on that day.”

He said he had been

provided with all of his essential needs growing up and didn’t realize how many people were in need until he was on his own as an adult.

“This work really changes a person’s perception of how many people are in need of basic necessities,” he said. “That’s why I help, so people in need can have hope.”

The Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce is a community-focused organization engaged in

the economic vitality to the region. We focus on building a stronger re-

gion and advocating for the community through support of area non-profits, hosting business/social events and spon-soring Leadership Sandoval County.

Leadership Sandoval County is an ed-ucational program established to ensure a continuum of leadership throughout the county. The program brings together leaders from all sectors and integrates them into community affairs.

Participants develop and refine leader-ship skills through an intense, 10-month experience. They explore challenges facing Sandoval County and learn how to lead the county into an era of change. Graduates become part of a network as they serve on boards and committees.

RRRCC hosts more than 200 events annually, most of which are open to the public and free to attend. Events include Business After Hours, area business cel-ebrations, Visionaries, Ambassadors, the annual membership celebration and the Leadership Sandoval Golf Tournament.

Business After Hours is an event

where members get the chance to net-work in another member’s place of busi-ness. It’s on the third Tuesday of each month and open to all members, as well as anyone considering membership.

The Visionaries consists of young professionals who gather to network and share experiences. Visionaries meet at Fairwinds–Rio Rancho on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Each quarter, Visionaries leaders select a proj-ect that benefits a local nonprofit.

Area business celebrations bring dozens of local businesses to an event where the owners can meet community members.

Chamber focuses on community, runs leadership course in county, plans events
