ALLEGHENY FOOTBALL HISTORY

MARGIN OF SUCCESS: The Gators’ 54-10 win over Kenyon is the team’s largest winning margin since a 52-7 drubbing of Hiram on Sept. 16, 2006. Last week was the Gators’ second 50-plus point output in three weeks, following a 52-20 win at Hiram on Sept. 29, marking the first time since 2001 that the Gators scored at least 50 points in a game twice in a season.

STOP RUNNING: In its win at Kenyon, Al-legheny allowed just 23 rushing yards, a season low and the fewest surrendered by a Gator defense since Nov. 11, 2011, when Oberlin ran for -23 yards. In their last four games, the Gators have held their oppo-nents without a rushing touchdown, and have surrendered fewer than 85 rushing yards in all four contests.

PICK PARTY: The Gator defense intercept-ed five Kenyon passes in last week’s win, their most in a game since picking off seven on Sept. 29, 1998 against Earlham. Five different players accounted for the five picks, including Quinten Hunt, Chase Balla, Clarence Long, Grayson Lee, and Charles Ross. Through seven games this year, the Gator defense has intercepted 11 passes, tied with DePauw for the NCAC lead. The 11 interceptions are already the team’s most in a season since 2009, when they picked off 14 passes in 10 games.

BECOMING A COMMON OCCURRENCE: Allegheny amassed a season-high 532 yards of total offense in the win at Kenyon, marking the second time this season that the Gators eclipsed the 500-yard mark af-ter doing so in a win over Hiram on Sept. 29. Allegheny has now topped the 500-yard mark five times in a 12-game span dating back to week five of last season. Pri-or to that, the Gators had not eclipsed 500 yards of total offense since Sept. 26, 2009, a span of 78 games.

LEE-VING HIS MARK: Senior quarterback Logan Lee completed 19 passes for 368 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s win at Kenyon. The all-time career leader in touchdown passes in Allegheny pro-gram history, Lee now owns three of the five five-touchdown performances in Gator

IN THE RANKINGSAllegheny players among top five in NCAC

history. Following his effort at Kenyon, Lee is now also the Gators’ all-time career lead-er in total offense, with 6,687 yards, while he ranks second in career passing yards (6,541).

EXCLUSIVE COMPANY: Senior Tyler Balla ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns in the win at Kenyon. It was his fourth 100-yard performance of the season and ninth of his career, and he eclipsed 2,000 rush-ing yards for his career, one of just 10 play-ers in program history to reach the mark. Balla currently ranks second in the NCAC in rushing touchdowns (7), and third in rush-ing yards (670).

IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY: Two sets of broth-ers on the Gators had big performances in last week’s win at Kenyon. Senior quarter-back Logan Lee threw for 368 yards and five touchdowns, while his younger broth-er, sophomore defensive lineman Grayson, picked off his first career interception. Senior running back Tyler Balla ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns, while his younger brother, sophomore outside iine-backer Chase, finished with three tackles, a solo sack, and an interception.

SACK ATTACK: Allegheny’s defense totaled four sacks in last week’s win at Kenyon, one apiece from Chase Balla, Kyle McGee, Austin Hoyt, Timen Mason, and Corey Las-key. The Gators now have 28 sacks on the season, which ranks second in the NCAC, and sixth in NCAA Division III. It’s already the team’s highest sack total in a season since 2009, when they finished with 29. The Gators haven’t had a season with at least 30 sacks since 2003, when they to-taled 38.

CAPTAINS OF THE SWAMP: Allegheny’s five co-captains for the 2018 season in-clude senior defensive tackle Marcus Dav-enport, senior receiver Tristan Rhoades, senior running back Tyler Balla, junior line-backer Corey Laskey, and junior receiver Alex Victor.

UP NEXT: Next week, the Gators will make the long trek to Crawfordsville, Indiana for their final road game of the 2018 season, a 1 p.m. matchup at Wabash.

ALLEGHENY VS. DEPAUW - THE MATCH UP

ALLEGHENY vs. DEPAUW - THE LAST MEETINGGREENCASTLE, Ind.. (Oct. 29, 2017) – Allegheny quarterback Logan Lee became Allegheny’s all-time single-season leader in touchdown passes, but host DePauw used a big second quarter to hand the Gators a 42-26 loss.

Lee fired four touchdown strikes to up his season total to 26, eclipsing Jimmy Savage’s previous mark of 24 set in 2008. Three of Lee’s TDs went to sophomore Alex Victor, who upped his season total to 12, tied for the most in single-season team history.

Lee completed 22 of 32 passes for 302 yards, with Victor hauling in eight catches for 113 yards. DePauw quarterback Jake Lasky also had a big day, going 16-for-21 for 413 yards and five touchdowns, while also leading both sides with 87 rushing yards.

Allegheny scored the first points of the afternoon, with Lee completing a nine-yard touchdown strike to Victor to make it 6-0 with 2:30 left in the conference. the lead would last until midway through the second quarter, when DePauw’s Ramon Lopez ran for a two-yard score to cap off a 16-play, 98-yard drive and make it 7-6 with 7:31 left in the half.

The Lopez run invigorated the Tigers, who would go on to score two more touchdowns before halftime, with a 73-yard pass from Laskey to Jake Hagen, and a 56-yard Laskey strike to Andy Hunt, to take a 21-6 lead at the intermission. Laskey stayed hot following the break, finding Ben Wilson for a 55-yard touchdown with 6:26 left in the third quarter to go up 28-6.

The Gators answered back, with a 47-yard scor-ing strike from Lee to Victor cutting the deficit to 26-12 with five minutes left in the third, before Lee and Dwaine Barber hooked up for a 17-yard touchdown on the opening play of the fourth quar-ter to make it a one-score game, 28-20.

It was as close as Allegheny would get, however, as Laskey threw a pair of fourth quarter touch-down strikes to Hunt, one for 15 yards and anoth-er for 39 yards, to take a 42-20 lead with 10:43 left to play. With 7:24 left, Lee and Victor hooked up for a third touchdown, this one for 10 yards, to make it 42-26, but Allegheny would get no closer.

Angel Alvarez made four catches for 60 yards and Tristan Rhoades three for 63, while Tyler Balla gained 67 yards to lead the Gator ground game. For DePauw, which out-gained the Gators 535-355 in total offense, Hagan made six catches for 163 yards, and Hunt four for 130.

Chase Balla led Allegheny’s defense with 15 tack-les, while Clarence Long totaled eight. Connor Perkins had nine tackles to pace the Tigers, with Nate Orrison totaling four stops, including two sacks.

Last Time Out: Gators Showcase Prolific Offense, Stifling Defense in Win at KenyonGAMBIER, Ohio (Oct. 20, 2018)– The Gators turned in their most complete perfor-mance of the 2018 season in a convincing 54-10 win over Kenyon in North Coast Ath-letic Conference action at McBride Field. Senior quarterback Logan Lee threw for 368 yards and five touchdowns to lead a Gator (4-3, 4-2 NCAC) offense that produced 532 yards, while the Allegheny defense forced six Kenyon (0-7, 0-6 NCAC) turnovers and limited the Lords to just 241 yards of total offense. A pair of Allegheny junior receivers posted 100-yard days, as Dwaine Barber hauled in seven catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns, and Alex Victor six grabs for 121 yards and a score. On the ground, senior Tyler Balla produced his fourth 100-yard effort of the season, rushing for 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Defensively, the Gators tallied five interceptions, their most in a game since a seven-in-terception performance on Sept. 29, 1998 vs. Earlham. Allegheny also limited the Lords to just 23 rushing yards for the game, the fewest surrendered in a game by the Gators since a Nov. 11, 2011 win over Oberlin. The Gators wasted little time in taking an early lead. On the opening drive of the game, Chase Balla’s third down sack backed up Kenyon inside its own 20. After the ensuing punt set the Gators up at their own 43, Lee opened with a 20-yard strike to Victor on Allegheny’s first play from scrimmage, before two snaps later, the two would hook up again for a 31-yard touchdown to give the visitors a 7-0 lead just four minutes into play. Kenyon’s ensuing trip ended in their first interception of the day, with Clarence Long returning the pick inside the Lords’ 33. The Gator offense would turn it over on downs, but got the ball back three plays later, when Chase Balla intercepted a Thomas Merkle pass and returned it to the Kenyon 20. The Gators didn’t find the end zone following the turnover, but did find the scoreboard, as Zach Bednarowicz buried a 30-yard field goal to go up 10-0 with 3:46 left in the first quarter. The defense produced its third interception of the day on the final play of the opening quarter, when Quinten Hunt picked off his third pass of the season and returned it to the

Kenyon 12 yardline. Tyler Balla would take it from there, carrying the ball three straight times, capped off with a one-yard plunge into the end zone on the second play of the second quarter to give Allegheny a 17-0 lead. Kenyon would follow with another three-and-out, but a 57-yard punt backed up the Gators to their own 20. They would then use a healthy mix of the pass and the run to embark on their most productive drive of the afternoon. On third-and-12, Lee kept the drive alive with a 30-yard completion to Barber to move to midfield, before rushed from Tyler Balla and Victor would set up first down at the Kenyon 39. The Lords would then force a fumble that was recovered by Allegheny but resulted in a 10-yard loss, but Lee would complete a 15-yarder to Victor and a 16-yarder to Barber to move into the red zone. Two plays later, on third-and-four from the 14, Lee hooked up with Ben Bachik in the end zone for the touchdown to cap off the 12-play, 80-yard drive and put the Gators up 24-0 with 8:57 left in the second quarter. A 33-yard return on the ensuing kickoff set up the Lords at midfield, and they would eventually move to the Allegheny 35, where they faced fourth and one. The Gator de-fense came up with another big stop, forcing Kenyon’s fourth turnover of the game when Corey Laskey pounced on a fumble to give the ball back to the Gators. Allegheny’s ensuing drive stalled at the Kenyon eight, but Bednarowicz would nail his second field goal of the half, this one from 25 yards out, to give the Gators a 27-0 lead with just under five minutes left in the quarter. Kenyon found the scoreboard on its next trip with a 23-yard field goal from Ryan Coo-per with 1:59 to go, but Lee and the Gators would end the half on a high note. Lee opened Allegheny’s final drive of the half with a 43-yard completion to Tristan Rhoades to move to the Kenyon 38. before a seven-yard pass to Barber and an eight-yard run from Tyler Balla set up first down at the Kenyon 23. Lee would then go back to Barber, as the tall veteran pulled in a 23-yard touchdown pass to close out the half and give Allegheny a 34-3 lead. Allegheny picked up right where it left off to open the third quarter. After Rhoades returned the opening kick of the half 36 yards to midfield, Lee opened the half with a 23-yard pass to Victor, before going back to Rhoades for a 10-yard gain to give the Gators first down at the Kenyon 17. Balla would then run twice for 12 yards, before Lee found Bachik in the end zone for the second time to make the score 41-3 three minutes into the third quarter. After taking over on their own 18 following another long Kenyon punt, the Gators would embark on a 10-play, 82-yard drive that was capped off with Tyler Balla’s second rush-ing touchdown of the day, an eight-yard run that made it 48-3 with 5:20 left in the quar-ter. On the scoring drive, Balla ran four times for 26 yards, while Lee also completed a 23-yard pass to Victor and a 16-yarder to Barber. Kenyon found the end zone on its next trip, with Merkle completing a 66-yard touch-down to Ian Robertson with 3:30 left in the quarter, but the Gators answered right back. Rhoades returned the kickoff 29 yards to the Allegheny 35, and was aided by a 15-yard infraction on Kenyon that moved the ball to midfield. Following a 19-yard pass to Rhoades and a 10-yard run from Tyler Balla, Lee hooked up with Barber for a 20-yard touchdown with 50 seconds left in the quarter to give the Gators a 54-10 lead and close out the game’s scoring. In the fourth quarter, Kenyon put together a pair of lengthy drives, but Allegheny’s defense ended each one prematurely, as Grayson Lee tallied his first career intercep-tion with 8:35 left in regulation, before Charles Ross picked off his second pass of the season with four minutes to go. Lee ended with 19 completions on 31 attempts for 368 yards and five touchdowns. It marks the third career 5-touchdown performance for the Gators’ all-time career leader, while the 368 yards are the fifth-most in a game in team history. It was Lee’s fifth career game with over 300 passing yards. With his 111 yards on the ground, Tyler Balla eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for his career, as his total now stands at 2,089. It was Balla’s ninth career 100-yard rushing performance. Defensively, Kyle McGee led Allegheny with seven total tackles, including one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Zach Martin added five tackles and a half TFL, while also breaking up a pass. In all, the Gators totaled eight TFLs and four sacks, with McGee, Austin Hoyt, and Chase Balla each credited with one quarterback takedown, and Laskey and Timen Mason each assisting on one. For Kenyon, Merkle completed 16 of 36 passes for 185 yards and three interceptions. Robertson, the leading receiver in the NCAC, was Merkle’s favorite target, catching eight balls for 110 yards. Sam Dickey made a game-high 14 tackles for the Lords, including one sack, while Justus Brown had seven tackles, with one TFL.

ALLEGHENY COACHING STAFF

B.J. Hammer was named the 34th head coach in Allegheny football program history on January 4, 2016.

After posting a 1-9 mark in his first season at Allegheny in 2016, the program’s rebuilding took big strides in 2017, as the Gators finished 3-7 while posting prolific numbers on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Allegheny averaged 34.0 points and 449.6 yards per game, both of which were the Gators’ most since 2002. Sophomore Alex Victor earned First Team All-NCAC honors after setting school records for receiving yards (1,037) and touchdowns (15), while Tyler Balla became the first Gator running back to earn All-NCAC laurels after rushing for 955 yards and 10 touchdowns. Quarterback Logan Lee also had a record-breaking season, setting new Gator single-season marks in nearly every passing category, including completions (214), yards (3,002), and touchdowns (33).

The 2017 Gator defense also saw a pair of All-NCAC recipients. Defensive end Colten Buzard set a new Allegheny single-season mark with 20.5 tackles for loss, while tying a 17-year old school record with 12.0 sacks. Defensive back Chase Balla became the first Gator rookie to earn All-NCAC honors since 2014, as he finished with a team-best 73 tackles while breaking up five passes.

In his first season at the helm, Hammer saw a pair of his players earn All-NCAC honors, including senior John McFarland and junior Jake Wilson. McFarland ended his career as one of the most prolific tight ends in program history, and hauled in 48 catches for 552 yards. Wilson established an NCAA Division III record with 1,268 kick return yards, averaging 24.5 yards per try, and breaking off five returns of 50 yards or longer. As a team, the Gator offense saw an increase of an average of 9.0 points and 83 yards per game from the 2015 season, while the team’s pass defense ranked in the top five of the NCAC.

Hammer arrived at Allegheny after spending five seasons as the defensive coordinator at fellow North Coast Athletic Conference member Wabash College. There, he led a defensive unit that consistently ranked among NCAA Division-III’s best. During his five-year tenure, the Little Giants posted a record of 51-7, making three appearances in the NCAA Division-III playoffs and winning NCAC championships in 2011 and 2015. He mentored the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year in four of his five seasons as defensive coordinator, while 22 Wabash defenders were First Team All-NCAC honorees, and four were named All-America. In 2015, the Little Giants finished 12-1, including a perfect 8-0 in the NCAC, and advanced to the third round of the NCAA playoffs. Hammer’s defense ranked third nationally with 26 interceptions, fourth in rushing defense (72.2 yds/g), fifth in total defense (240.9 yds/g), and seventh in quarterback sacks (42). Eight Little Giant defenders earned All-NCAC honors, including six First Team selections. Wabash ended the year ranked seventh in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and D3Football.com Top 25 polls. In 2014, Hammer was named a Division-III Coordinator of the Year finalist after his unit led D-III in rushing defense (66.3 yds/g) and quarterback sacks (4.6 sacks/g), while ranking third in total defense, fifth in tackles for loss, and 12th in scoring defense. Little Giant linebacker Cody Buresh was named the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-America by both D3Football.com and the AFCA.

The 2013 Wabash defense led the nation in total defense (220.7 yds/g), fumbles recovered (19), and turnover margin (+24), while placing second in tackles for loss (11.6 TFL/g) and rushing defense (63.1). In 2012, the Little Giants placed eighth nationally in scoring defense and 10th in rushing defense, while linebacker CJ Gum earned the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year award for a second straight season. In his first season as the Wabash defensive coordinator, the Little Giants ranked fifth in the nation in rushing defense (78.1 yds/g), 11th in scoring defense (12.9 pts/g), and 12th in total defense (249.4 yds/g), while they paced the NCAC in every defensive statistical category. In addition to Gum being named the conference’s top defender, linebacker AJ Akinribade was named NCAC Newcomer of the Year. Prior to his five-year tenure at Wabash, Hammer spent eight seasons on the football staff at Whittier College. After working as the Poets’ defensive coordinator from 2003-05, Hammer was promoted to head coach, a position he held from 2006-10. Posting a 12-33 overall record, Hammer rebuilt a program that had just 13 players on its roster in 2003 to one that averaged a roster size of over 100. Thirty Whittier players were named All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), while the Whitter defense ranked second in the conference in total defense in 2006, and its rushing offense ranked second in the SCIAC in both 2009 and 2010. Before his stint in California, Hammer spent the 2002 season as the linebackers coach at Heidelberg College, after beginning his coaching career in 2001 as the outside linebackers coach at Wabash. Hammer graduated from Wabash in 2001, and is regarded as one of the top defenders to ever suit up for the Little Giants. He graduated as the school’s record holder for tackles for loss in a game (five), season (23), and career (58), as well as single-season sacks (15), while he is tied with younger brother Blair as the Little Giants’ all-time record holder in career sacks with 27.5. Team captain in 2000, Hammer was a two-time All-American and three-time All-Conference honoree, and was named the 2001 Pete Vaughn Award, which is given annually to the top Wabash senior athlete as voted upon by the athletic department. A native of Carmel, Indiana, Hammer and wife Emily are the parents of daughters Layla and Ellie, and son William. They reside in Meadville.
