A Message to the Milford Regional Healthcare Foundation CommunityThe Milford Regional Medical Center community has a culture of caring that is like none other, and it is truly our privilege to partner with each and every one of you to provide exceptional care for individuals and families throughout the region. As Milford Regional continues to evolve, grow and face the challenges the changing healthcare environment presents, your enduring commitment and support allow us to remain true to our promise to always do what is in the best interest of the people we serve.

While so many community hospitals have joined larger healthcare systems to expand services and stay financially sound, we’ve taken a different approach – one that has allowed us

to remain independent while providing the high-quality services and programs that our community members deserve. When there is a need, we seek out the individuals and organizations best qualified to help us meet that need. Your willingness to always respond when needs arise has made Milford Regional what it is today.

This past year marked the 10th anniversary of the Cancer Center at Milford Regional Medical Center, a joint initiative of our Medical Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Our partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital remains strong, and neurosurgery specialists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and vascular surgery specialists from UMass Memorial Medical Center now see patients right here in Milford. These academic medical center partnerships complement the remarkable talent and expertise of Milford Regional’s core group of exceptional clinical and support staff.

We’ve also expanded our gastroenterology staff, have a new linear accelerator in radiation oncology, and have invested in the latest surgical robotic technology. Renaming Tri-County Medical Group to Milford Regional Physician Group further solidifies our identity as a cohesive healthcare system, and Leslie G. Selbovitz, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs, recently celebrated his first anniversary at our organization. With the Meehan Family Pavilion complete, we have begun renovations to previously occupied spaces as the next step toward our goal of creating all private patient rooms.

As you can see from these highlights of the Medical Center’s recent activities, our future is bright. We couldn’t do it without you! There is no other community in the world that exemplifies the “power in numbers” than that which supports Milford Regional Medical Center!What strikes us about the incredible support the Milford Regional Healthcare Foundation receives is how the spirit of philanthropy is shared by so many community residents, local business owners and organizations, and members of our workforce throughout and across the organization. The cumulative impact of your deep-rooted commitment to being actively involved is very powerful!

Once again, the organizers of our fundraising events throughout the year outdid themselves providing opportunities to connect with old friends and new while supporting the Medical Center.

Here are some highlights:

• The Milford Regional 29th annual Golf Classic held in August at the Franklin Country Club raised more than $250,000 to support renovations to our fourth floor, a space more than 50 years old.

• The MyFM 101.3 Radiothon celebrated its 11th year at the Classic and raised over $100,000, all of which is dedicated to the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care. Local business owner Tony Khoury hosted two sold-out fundraising events and presented the Oliva Fund with proceeds totaling $42,000 at the Radiothon.

• Now in its 13th year, Taste of the Towns was hosted by the Milford Regional Medical Center Auxiliary in September at The Crystal Room. Nearly 20 restaurants participated and raised $25,000 to support fourth floor renovations.

• The Mélange Gala and Live Auction – Celebrate the Circus! – held at the Milford Youth Center in November raised an unprecedented $1,000,000. Kevin and Leslie Lobisser graciously chaired the monumental event and welcomed presenting sponsor, Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation, in support of the fourth floor renovations at Milford Regional.

All told, $3,383,643 was raised this year in support of specific programs and our Annual Fund, and there is no possible way to quantify the value of the time, talents and expertise our board members, committee members, and other volunteers dedicate so selflessly. Every single supporter makes a difference, and together, you are leading the way toward Milford Regional’s bright and successful future. We can’t thank you enough!

DR. JEFF HOPKINS

FOCUSING ON SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF

“We really do have something special here,” said Jeff Hopkins, MD, FACEP, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Milford Regional Medical Center. “It’s a tight-knit community hospital that provides outstanding care for patients right in their own backyards.” Dr. Hopkins happens to have deep roots in the very same backyard. He grew up in Westborough, earned his medical degree at University of Massachusetts Medical School, completed his residency at UMass Memorial Medical Center, and became an attending physician at Milford Regional in 2003. He and his wife, Sarah, are raising daughters Callie, Josie, and Jane in Hopkinton.

“I fell in love with Milford Regional during my rotations here,” he said.

“There is a real sense that we’re contributing to the wellness of family, friends, and neighbors.”

Not only is the Hopkins family among the Foundation’s major donors, Dr. Hopkins also serves as a corporator, vice chair of the Milford Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees, trustee of Milford Regional Physician Group, and medical director of the Hopkinton Fire Department. Dr. Hopkins is also an active member and former president of the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians, representing approximately 1,000 emergency physicians in the state, where he has been involved in numerous initiatives to identify best practices and to improve patient care.

Asked how he is able to do so much, Dr. Hopkins credits Sarah, an attorney who coaches their daughters’ soccer and lacrosse teams, for being his

“rock and support.” As undergraduate

students together at the University of Notre Dame, the couple shared an intense focus on commitment to community, a core value that the Hopkins family embraces and sees in the Milford Regional family. “We are fortunate to have such a supportive community that sees the importance of being something bigger than yourself and making a difference,” Dr. Hopkins said. “Giving back comes in a lot of forms. It doesn’t have to be monetary gifts. Contributing your time, sharing your knowledge, doing something that puts a smile on another person’s face and doing anything that makes the community just a little bit better are all precious gifts that make a big difference.”

TONY KHOURY

RADIOTHON INSPIRES EMOTIONAL CONNECTIONTony Khoury’s connection to the Milford Regional Healthcare Foundation began when he was asked to participate in the 2008 MyFM 101.3 Radiothon that supports the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care. “I called in to make my donation and ended up listening to the Radiothon for the rest of the day,” Tony said, “I got emotional listening to the stories of people who were going through life or death situations. It had a lasting impact on me.” Tony called in several more times that day and now shares the Radiothon link with friends and family around the world so they can help, too.

But Tony was just getting started! He currently serves as a corporator and as a member of the Milford Regional Healthcare Foundation Board of Trustees, and his passion for raising

funds to help individuals and families facing the challenges that accompany a cancer diagnosis remains a top priority. Last year, he raised $20,000 by hosting a sold-out presentation of “Saturday Night Live in Bellingham: Joey and Maria’s Wedding.” Due to popular demand, this year’s comedy event included two sold-out shows and raised a remarkable $42,000! Both events supported the Oliva Fund, and Tony has more fun in store for next year.

Tony says that he came to the United States in 1971 “with a one-way ticket and $100 in my pocket.” He studied electrical engineering in Michigan and moved to Massachusetts where he became a leader in his field developing revolutionary technologies at Raytheon and inTEST Corporation. Tony established Bellingham-based

Khoury Industries in 2005, and is the owner of Khoury Plaza and Gateway Liquors.

Tony feels fortunate for the opportunities to bring his mother and five sisters here from Syria, raise his three children Shadia, John and Jacqueline, spend time with his two grandchildren, and become a successful business owner. “It’s time for me to give back,” he said.

DR. LESLIE SELBOVITZ

A FOCUS ON PHYSICIAN ENGAGEMENTSince accepting the position of chief medical officer (CMO) and senior vice president for medical affairs at Milford Regional Medical Center in October of 2017, Leslie G. Selbovitz, MD, has focused on engaging physicians as leaders in improving quality and safety in health care. “One of the centerpieces of the effort to be second to none in terms of quality and patient safety is engagement of the medical staff,” he said.

Dr. Selbovitz had retired from executive leadership positions when he decided to join Milford Regional, first as a consultant, then as CMO. “When I was consulting at the Medical Center, I saw an organization that was dedicated at every level – from the Board of Trustees to the executive leadership to the physicians and staff – to improving the well-being of patients,” he said. “I was impressed with how everybody here embraces patients

with such diverse backgrounds and treats the underserved no differently than the most well connected. That organization-wide, singular view of how you care for your fellow human beings touched me.”

Dr. Selbovitz was the first medical director over quality, safety and risk management at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. Prior to joining Milford Regional, he served as Newton Wellesley Hospital’s CMO and senior vice president for medical affairs for 18 years. He also chaired the CMO Council of Partners HealthCare System and earned the distinction of being a recipient of the coveted Samuel O. Thier Partners Physician Leadership Award, which is given to one physician each year. Dr. Selbovitz is also a clinical professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and, extending his interest in quality to the post-acute sector, is certified as a medical director of

long-term care through the American Medical Directors Association.

Dr. Selbovitz also earned the distinction of being the first individual in the nation to conceive of and receive approval to award physicians continuing medical educational credits towards their medical licenses by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education for using computerized order entry evidence-based order sets in real time to care for patients. This usage was followed by answering a brief quiz on the key principles in the order sets and attesting to reading selected articles pertaining to the patient’s condition. Continuing similar practices at the bedside by physicians and advanced practice clinicians are ongoing elements of Dr. Selbovitz’s leadership work at Milford Regional.

The Milford Youth Center graciously opened its doors for an unforgettable evening for the nearly 500 guests who attended the 14th annual Mélange Gala and Live Auction – Celebrate the Circus! Held on Saturday, November 3, the spectacular signature event amazed its guests with a ring master and tight rope walker, living statues, a colorful jester on stilts, and a majestic fortune teller as they entered the big top for signature cocktails and creative circus-themed amuse-gueules.

Dinner, remarks, and a highly-spirited live auction by Paul Zekos of The Zekos Group took place in the vivaciously decorated ballroom while guests enjoyed the visual entertainment of Cirque de Light and musical entertainment of Clockwork New England. 2018 ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

The 11th annual MyFM 101.3 Radiothon had a banner year, raising more than $100,000 in support of the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care at Milford Regional Medical Center! Held simultaneously with the Milford Regional annual Golf Classic, the Radiothon presents a unique opportunity for the community to support local patients and families facing the difficult challenges that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. More than a single-day event, the Radiothon truly inspires donors with on-air interviews and testimonials. Many thanks to MyFM 101.3, sponsors, and donors for making the event a tremendous success!

The Oliva Fund for Cancer Care was established in honor of Milford’s Oliva Family for their ongoing commitment and generous support of Milford Regional Medical Center and the Milford Regional Healthcare Foundation. The Oliva Fund provides the necessary resources in support of patients and their families being cared for at Milford Regional Medical Center and Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center at Milford Regional.
