MEETINGS RUN BETTER ON ISLAND TIME!Located just 50 minutes from Houston, Galveston offers 32 miles of relaxing beaches, superb restaurants, top resort hotels, marvelous downtown shopping, numerous antique stores, incredible art galleries, fabulous entertainment and one of the largest and well-preserved concentrations of Victorian architecture in the country.

Galveston history is rich and impressive and nearby attractions exist to tell the tale. In the 18th century leading into the 19th century, Galveston became a prominent North American port city. But before that, the area had a strong Native American population consisting of Akokisa and Karankawa Indians before Europeans arrived in the early 16th century.

LAND OF PIRATESThe attraction "Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast" displays the life of Galveston’s first true settler, the pirate Jean Lafitte of the early 19th century.

HISTORIC HOMESThe Menard House, built in 1838, and the Samuel May Williams House, built in 1839, are among the island’s oldest homes. Other homes include the Ashton Villa, built in 1859, the Bishop's Palace, built in 1892, and the Moody Mansion, built in 1895. All of these historic properties portray early 20th century family life among Galveston's elite.

OPERA HOUSEGalveston is an emblem for ambition as it was home to the state's first opera house, first hospital, first golf course, first post office and more. The Grand 1894 Opera House is ranked among the nation's finest historical theaters.

PIER 21The great storm of 1900 nearly obliterated Galveston, but failed. The film The Great Storm is shown daily at nearby Pier 21. The documentary details the 1900 hurricane which killed 6,000 and changed the Island's history. The storm of 1900 also led to the construction of the famous Seawall, which is home to Galveston's best dining, shopping and entertainment.

BRYAN MUSEUMHead to the Bryan Museum for a closer look at Galveston's history, as well as the history of Texas, in one of the world's largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West.

SCHLITTERBAHN WATERPARKSchlitterbahn Waterpark is a large waterpark within walking distance of Moody Gardens Hotel. Your stay in Galveston is not complete without a visit to Schlitterbahn's dozens of water attractions. Among its many thrill rides, the park offers the Wolfpack, with three-person rafts that whirl down a giant tube chute. Slower rides at Schlitterbahn Galveston include Kristal River, a classic lazy river that winds through the Transportainment River System, which lets guests travel the whole park without leaving the water.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Moody Gardens is a public, nonprofit educational destination utilizing nature in the advancement of rehabilitation, conservation, recreation, and research.

A meeting on an island beach town sounds like it might be difficult to get to. But located only 50 miles away from Houston, Galveston is an island oasis that's surprisingly accessible.

The nation's fourth largest city, Houston, is home to Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport, which offer hundreds of direct daily flights, translating into maximum flexibility for scheduling. Shuttles are available to Galveston Island from both airports. Grounds transportation from both airports follows a direct route south, along Interstate 45.
