Message from the CEO

Wow! What a Difference a Year Makes

2018 has been an outstanding year for the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, and it has been my distinct pleasure to be your CEO as we created what turned out to be our strongest financial performance in many years. In my 2017 message, I communicated that we were struggling but we had a plan. With the support of staff, members, Divisions, Branches, and Assemblies, we built a stable base for growth. I’m proud to say that everyone stepped up and we exceeded our expectations in every category.

We have turned the financial performance of the Association around and generated a contribution of over $1.4M in 2018; an inspirational improvement of $2.1M over our performance in 2017. This puts us on solid ground and recovers a good portion of our past three years’ losses. I’m proud to report that the National Office and our Divisions worked together to create this success.

How Did We Achieve This?

There are too many successes to share them all; here are a few highlights:

Members continue to believe in and support our organization. We sent a survey to our members and combined member feedback with our strategic plan to further develop direction for the CPA. My first and greatest thank you goes to our members; we would not exist without you.

Sponsors stepped up and our Business Development team found 25 new customers to generate a 39% increase in exhibit and sponsorship revenue as compared to our last Congress. A huge thank you to our sponsors, partners, and exhibitors without whom we would not be able to hold our Congress and Forum events.

National Office: $1,324,244

Divisions: $123,174

Total: $1,447,418

Message from the CEO

Our Advocacy, Professional Practice and Advancement department launched PD Marketplace and ran Congress #Montreal18. This year marked our most successful Congress ever, with 964 delegates attending. Thank you as well to our Quebec partners - Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ) and Association Québécoise de la physiothérapie (AQP) for their support hosting this event.

Of course, our successes would go unnoticed without the outstanding work of our Communications department, who generated member and public awareness through multiple campaigns, e-blasts, and our social media channels.

And finally, our Governance, Finance, Human Resources, and Member Services departments were unseen warriors working to improve our structure, operations, reporting, controls, processes, and IT infrastructure. With this core of professionals, we now have a clear path to guide us forward.

I have been reflecting on how fortunate I have been to be invited into your profession and given the opportunity to work with an engaged Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers to stabilize this vital association, preparing it for your next CEO. I would like to express my sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who made this year possible.

I see good things in the future of the CPA. You have accepted me into your family, and we have created a stable base for a great organization with true professionals and an extraordinary team.

Thank you for the pleasure and privilege of working with you!

Work started on an environmental scan, looking at post-entry-to-practice career development within the physiotherapy profession.

CPA was represented on the Canadian Patient Safety Institute’s working group on patient safety competencies framework, the Vision OTA/PTA project, and the Core Professional Values project.
