2018 Program RecapsFor Special Olympics Kentucky, 2018 was a year of tremendous growth and celebration. We saw the number of athletes we serve increase in every one of our programs. We added more than 1,000 ath-

letes in our core sports program. The num-ber of Unified Champion Schools grew to a record number and two schools earned National Banner Recognition, the highest honor awarded in the UCS program. We saw an increase in the number of Healthy Athletes screenings we provided and in referrals for additional care. We also sent a delegation to the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle (see the back of this report for results).

In 2018 we also held a year-long celebra-tion of our program’s 50th Anniversary.

The year was highlighted by two big cele-brations. In July, supporters from around the world gathered in Chicago – the home of the first Special Olympics Games – for a weekend that included a Global Day of Inclusion and a dedication of an Eternal Flame of Hope monument near Soldier Field.

Here in Kentucky, we had a one-day cel-ebration at Valley High School – home of our state’s first Games. Athletes, volun-teers, and family members from across the state attended. The day included a parade of athletes, a torch run, presentation of five Program Pioneer awards and sports demonstrations. Athlete Roger Kappess-er, who attended the first ever Games in Chicago, lit the Special Olympics cauldron to help kick off our event.

Athlete Ambassador Killian Day of Bowling Green had the privilege of addressing our anniversary celebration audience, saying “I am so grateful that Eunice Kennedy Shriv-er founded Special Olympics 50 years ago. Because someone truly cared about the fu-ture of us and saw potential in those with disabilities. Special Olympics was born and the world changed for all of us.”

In 2018 we celebrated 50 years of chang-ing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and I extend my sincere grati-tude for your support both this year and in the years that came before. Now we move ahead into the next 50 years, continuing to advocate for the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities on the playing field, in the classroom, in the workplace and be-yond. I look forward to working with you in those pursuits as well.

Trish Mazzoni President/CEO

From the CEOSportsSpecial Olympics Kentucky enjoyed another outstand-ing year in our core sports program. Our 15 year-round sports saw more than 10,200 athletes take part, an increase of more than 1,300 athletes over a year ago and our largest increase in many years. Athletes com-peted as part of 461 delegations, representing 99 of Kentucky’s 120 counties.

Bowling continued to be our largest individual sport with more than 2,200 athletes competing. Basketball was our most popular team sport with a record 116 teams competing statewide.

Healthy AthletesSpecial Olympics knows that people with intellectual disabilities represent a medically underserved popu-lation. That’s why the Healthy Athletes Program was established in 1997.

Healthy Athletes provides medical screenings for our athletes at events like MedFest, our State Summer

Games and our State Basketball Tournament. Services are free, and are performed by medical professionals trained to work with our population.

In 2018 we provided 1,300 screenings, made 326 referrals for follow-up care, and with the help of the Lions club, we distributed 113 free pairs of glasses.

Unified Champion SchoolsThe Unified Champion Schools program seeks to build stronger, more inclusive school communities by bringing students with and without intellectual disabilities to-gether. The 2018-19 school year was the most successful ever for SOKY’s Unified Champion Schools efforts.

The number of participating schools swelled to 73 in 40 counties. The number of schools participating in Unified Sports through our KHSAA partnership hit record levels. And Calloway Coun-ty and East Carter High Schools were recognized as National Banner Schools, the highest honor presented to UCS participants.

In addition to being a year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Special Olympics, 2018 featured the fourth Special Olym-pics USA Games. Kentucky sent 45 athletes and 18 coaches to Seattle, Wash.,

to compete in the Games, which were held from July 1-6.

Team Kentucky had tremendous success in the Pacific Northwest, bringing home 50 medals in total, including 20 golds. The total set a USA Games record for Team Kentucky, topping the 42 medals Kentucky athletes won at the inaugural USA Games in 2006 in Ames, Iowa. Every Kentucky ath-lete claimed at least one medal in Seattle.

Kentucky athletes got on the board on the first full day of the Games when Joseph Ramirez of Murray (on the front cover) won gold in the 100-meter dash. We also claimed medals in the last events of the Games when Justin Hale of Louisville and Hunter Eudy of Independence finished second and third respectively in one of the last heats of the 50-meter backstroke.

The Games also featured a hole in one by golf Unified partner Dennis Gaines of Lexington, his first ever ace.

Kentucky gymnasts not only led the medal count, but were also among the featured stories during the Games. The five gym-nasts were profiled by ESPN’s Julie Foudy and again by the network’s Holly Rowe.
