Dear ICF Donors and Friends,

This year, we want to celebrate our donor community, which has been both committed and invested in addressing the needs of underserved communities and vulnerable natural habitats.

Our work is both broad and deep. First, we support hundreds of educational, cultural, environmental, and health-related projects and programs – all implemented by local organizations. In fact, we are proud to report that, in fiscal year 2018, ICF granted over $10.8 million to 270 organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Next, ICF supports these organizations by sharing its programmatic expertise and geographic networks, helping to build strong organizations, and convening grantees to work together to resolve complex issues.

In the following pages, we highlight a few initiatives that ICF supported last year that we believe will make a real impact in the lives and well-being of local residents throughout our grantmaking area.

Finally, ICF has remained responsive to urgent demands. After hurricanes and earthquakes struck Mexico last year, ICF made disaster relief a priority, granting over $750,000 to rehabilitate the region. We also responded in Barbuda to help that island recover from the devastating Hurricane Irma.

We are incredibly grateful for the support that ICF’s committed donors provide to local organizations, projects, and catastrophic events like those described above and in the following pages. Our impact would not be possible without the dedication and steady funding you offer.

We hope that you will join us very soon – in our offices, on a site visit, at a workshop, or at one of our many events throughout the year. We are eager to introduce you to the inspiring work of individuals and organizations dedicating to improving the lives, communities, and ecosystems that we all depend on.

We look forward to hearing from you very soon! And again, thank you, for your support.

Sincerely,

Anne McEnany Jackie MeyerICF President & CEO ICF Board Chair

“ We have spent some of our best family times together in Cabo and, over time, we have become more aware of the challenges of this growing area. Our family foundation turned to ICF to send small grants that help children with the basics - a safe home, nutritious food and a good education. We couldn’t have done it without ICF’s guidance!”

“ We are able to be in the business of philanthropy, of being able to contribute in this way to the important work being done to protect and preserve some of the most amazing landscapes on Earth. We believe in developing long-term relationships with our grantees that allow us to build trust in their abilities and instincts.

ICF 2018 Donors

The expertise of the ICF Team is an incredible asset and helps us immensely in our grant-making in Mexico. They provide extensive knowledge of environmental conservation and of the related landscape in Mexico and apply that knowledge to provide trusted advice. ICF focuses on on a very special part of the world. This commitment to Baja California and Mexico allows them to focus on building strong communities and healthy natural spaces.”

“ The Latina Giving Circle’s partnership with ICF has been an engine of our Circle’s growth and success. Together we catalyzed nearly $50,000 in giving to groups that are confronting the challenges and trauma of family separation policies. Thanks to ICF’s nomination, the Latina Giving Circle is being honored by the San Diego Chapter of AFP as outstanding grantmaker of the year. Partnering with ICF has been the best thing we have done for our organization. ICF truly cares about our members, our model, our culture, and our vision, and has supported us every step of the way."

environmentSan Quintín: A Flourishing Region

18

What We Do

$4.86M total environment grants in FY2018to 102 organizations for research, enforcement, protected areas management, and environmental education.

For many years, the San Quintín region ofBaja California, Mexico has been known for its natural beauty. It is, however, also home to a unique coastal wildlife habitat that rivals California’s coastal zones.

With its abundant flora and fauna, this region naturally drew the attention of

conservation and research organizations such as Terra Peninsular, A.C. and the San Diego Natural History Museum ("The Nat").

This year, both organizations jointly rediscovered the San Quintín KangarooRat. This mammal was last seen in 1986and placed on the Mexico endangered species list in 1994. The small kangaroo rat gets its name from its powerful hind feet, which

allow it to propel itself forward like a kangaroo. This small and fierce mammal was found by researchers from "The Nat" on two certified conservation reserves owned and managed by Terra Peninsular.

"The Nat" published these findings in its recent “Biodiversity and Conservation Report” and will continue its partnership with Terra Peninsular to use research outcomes for strategic conservation plans in the region.

ICF works with JiJi Foundation and other donors to support

Terra Peninsular A.C. and the San Diego Natural History

Museum to protect the natural ecosystems of the B.C. peninsula.

healthFighting Dengue and Zika

Thanks to the generous financial backing provided by Mrs. Walton’s Candeo Fund at ICF, WMP has set up shop in La Paz, initiating the first intervention of its kind in all of Mexico. Once this innovative approach proves successful in La Paz, ICF will work with other donors to help replicate this public/private joint investment throughout the state and beyond.

What We Do

$1.12M total health grants in FY2018to 44 organizations for research, health services, education, and preventative care.

Every year, from August to mid-October, Baja California Sur (BCS) turns into a green desert oasis as the Pacific coast of Mexico experiences its tropical storm season. Along with rain comes an abundance of mosquitos, bringing along the threat of vector-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya and Zika.

In 2013 and 2014, close to 4,000 cases of dengue were registered in La Paz, BCS, alone, including many ICF grantees who acted as first responders during Hurricane Odile.

In response, ICF’s donor, Christy Walton, charged ICF with finding a solution that

would address this public health concern. After a year of research, ICF knew they had found the right fit with the World Mosquito Program (WMP) at Monash University in Australia.

WMP uses Wolbachia, a safe and natural bacteria, to reduce the ability of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to transmit viruses to humans. Unlike most vector-control initiatives, WMP’s method is natural, self-sustaining, and poses no risks to the ecosystem or human health.

Like many towns throughout the BajaCalifornia peninsula, the fishing village ofTodos Santos has experienced rapiddevelopment in recent years. While growthhas brought new economic opportunities to local families, the local school system has not kept up with innovations that future generations need to excel.

Recognizing this challenge, the Palapa Society of Todos Santos, A.C embarked ona mission to establish a new secondary

school that would provide local middle and high-school students with the high-quality education and 21st century skills needed to seize new opportunities and improve their quality of life.

After two years of fundraising, planning and constructing the building, and obtaining certification, the new Palapa School opened its doors in August 2017. In its inaugural school year, 40 seventh and eighth grade students benefitted from the

school’s rigorous curriculum and state-of-the-art facilities. This helped the Palapa students surpass the national average educational outcomes.

To make this quality education accessible to all, the Palapa Society also offers 90 scholarships for students to attend public school and their renowned English classes for children and adults. Additionally, the Palapa Society operates two bilingual libraries, open to the public.

The ICF team worked with David and Cindy Higgins to structure a $1.25 million gift to design, construct and launch the Palapa School in 2016-2017. Since this initial commitment, ICF has received gifts from hundreds of donors to benefit the students of Todos Santos through the Palapa School and the Palapa Society’s programs.
