Principal’s Message Welcome back to all Kingsville families for the final term of 2018. Please see details of some highlights and planned events for the term later in the newsletter. Right now of course it is all roads leading to the much anticipated School Fete on
Saturday October 20th. Only 1 week, 5 school days to go to this very important day on the 2018 calendar. The excitement levels are high, the weather forecast is still looking good and we are preparing for large numbers. The fete team along with volunteers have been absolutely flat our working away to ensure everything will be ready. HOWEVER Kingsville parents you are needed not only to attend on the day but also as volunteers to assist on the stalls. Unfortunately the number of volunteers for class stalls are still low for some classes. Without gaining more volunteers to take on shifts and share the load some of these stalls will have to be amalgamated. So please go to www.kpsfete.com/volunteer and VOLUNTEER NOW.
Grades that are in URGENT need of additional volunteers are –
FCM – BBQ FDG – Hot Dogs FLI – Lollies/showbags 2AT – Curry (in the afternoon) 34K – Face Painting 5AO – Tattoos 5GM – coffee/scones/cakes 6JD – Bike smoothies 6SE – Face Painting However all classes will benefit from additional help. Fete newsletters These have been instrumental in providing information to the community. Please note there will be one last Fete newsletter going home next Monday. Please ensure you read this newsletter. Donations for stalls Big thanks to everyone who has donated items for a number of stalls including toys, books and secondhand clothes. Donations for the Principal’s Stall have increased and I have certainly gained some very unusual quirky bits and pieces. I have also procured/acquired by demand in some cases a number of donations from friends and family during the break. So, you will need plenty of cash in hand on the day to enable you can take advantage of some quirky “never to be repeated” sales opportunities. However, I still need last minute donations of –
cookware – all sorts
interesting tea/coffee mugs – which will feature (you know you need them)
vases, plates, pottery etc.
bags, bags, bags and more bags – handbags, purses, clutches, think Mulberry or Lulu Guinness hah but, any will do
millinery – the racing season is on
general vintage items
suitable “antique roadshow” items of course or
just your general everyday treasure you no longer need The Principal’s stall will be set up outside the hall at the side of the main stages. Get in early and no bargaining will be entered into.

Congratulations to our Kingsville teacher sport achievers During the school holidays some of the staff from Kingsville joined forces with staff from Yarraville West Primary School to compete in the 2018 Teachers’ Games, held in Ballarat. We were undefeated in the Lawn Bowls, where Carmel’s competitive spirit shone through. Thanks to Kim and Blagma who came to support our Kingsville Rollers’ team. Kingsville and Yarraville West Primary School again combined forces to reach the Gold Medal match in Dodgeball, but unfortunately, much like Collingwood were to be, we weren’t quite good enough and came away with silver. A huge thank you to Carmel Cooper, Luisa Ballestrino, Ryan McCann and Sam Eason for doing Kingsville proud and thank you to Yarraville West for joining forces. Sam Eason, Grade 6 teacher

Calling for Community Stories Peace and Reconciliation
Remembrance Day has a special significance in 2018. Sunday, 11th November 2018 marks the 100th
anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18).
On the 100th anniversary, we reflect on the sacrifice of our nation's servicemen/women and the war
whose enduring legacy shaped the social, military and political fabric of the 20th century.
Kingsville Primary will be reflecting on this significant episode in our history by creating a display in the
library that will highlight this event. Class 3/4M will be using their assembly item to take the whole school
through small ceremony and a minute’s silence on Friday 9th November to show our respect to peace
and reconciliation.
We would like to involve the whole school community in this noteworthy event. It would be wonderful to
have some stories of Kingsville families’ involvement in WW1 – pictures/biographies to display in the
library and share at the Friday morning assembly ceremony.
Families that are keen to share a story of family involvement in this great and terrible struggle can be
sent through to the school office, either as a hard copy or email [email protected] with
the subject heading - Remembrance Day, by Friday 2nd of November.
Michael Carey, teacher 3/4M

Empowering Students A significant element of the Victoria Government’s school vision in the area of Positive Climate for
learning is to recognise the fundamental importance of empowering students and the contribution that
student voice, agency and leadership make to improved student outcomes, health and wellbeing
There is strong evidence that students become more engaged in learning when they have opportunities
to:
• exercise agency in their own learning
• contribute to the communities in which they learn
• improve the learning program for themselves and their peers.
What is student agency?
Student agency refers to the level of autonomy that a student experiences in the learning environment.
Student voice and agency are intrinsically linked. Agency gives students the power to direct and take
responsibility for their learning, creating independent learners.
Student voice is not simply about giving students the opportunity to communicate ideas and opinions; it’s
about students having the power to influence change. Authentic student voice provides opportunities for
students to collaborate and make decisions with adults around what and how they learn and how their
learning is assessed.
At Kingsville we understand the importance of creating learning environments that promote
independence, interdependence and self-motivation. We work to build productive and inclusive school
cultures for all adults and students.
The teachers work to develop classroom environments that enable students to be active participants in
their learning. They are responsive to student feedback and adapt their teaching practice to suit the
needs of all students.
As a school we have been fortunate to be part of the Victorian PYP Network, the networks key priority for
the past two years has been to deliver professional training in the area of student agency. As a result of
our work in this area we have made some significant gains in the students’ positive responses to the
attitudes to school survey that is completed annually by the Department of Education.
Some examples of student agency in action could be:
Creating a student voice team to contribute to a particular school project
Creating a Junior School Council
Students setting individual learning goals and contributing to lessons to achieve these
Providing reflections for camps, events, units of work, lessons
Students take responsibility for their learning and are self-regulating
Students can track and measure their own growth
Are involved in designing and implementing school policy and programs
When students experience a sense of belonging and significance through voice, agency and leadership,
they are likely to articulate their sense of empowerment and school pride.
The increase of agency has been linked to a variety of important educational outcomes, including:
Elevated achievement levels
Greater classroom participation
Enhanced school reform efforts
Better self-regulation by students
Decrease in behavioural issues
Page 7
It is important to understand that for student agency and voice to be most effective it must involve adult
cooperation. It must involve co-planning, making decisions together, not simply involve a student making
independent decisions without support. It also involves the accepting of shared commitment and
responsibility for outcomes.
The provision of student voice and agency is closely linked with the PYP Learner Profile Attribute of Principled: We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.
Peter Ritchie, Assistant Principal/PYP coordinator
