June 21-24 USATF Outdoor Championships Des Moines, Iowa Redemption with 2018 NCAA Indoors Title Florida’s men held off Southern California’s late surge to win their eighth NCAA title since 2010--three more than any other Division I program in that span--three weeks ago at NCAA Indoors in College Station, Texas. It marked the Gators’ fourth indoor national title since 2010, and its first since 2012, when they finished off a three-peat. Florida only touted eight entries, but the 1-2 punch of Grant Holloway and KeAndre Bates combined for 29 of the Gators’ 34 individual points. The other six came from the 4x400 relay--which featured Holloway. Florida’s men have now won or taken runner-up honors at 20 of 31 NCAA Championships (64.5 percent) with Mike Holloway as head coach. Florida’s men entered the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships as the over- whelming favorites, but finished a half a point behind Texas A&M (46-45.5). Only the 1977 NCAA Indoor Championships crowned a single champion by less than a one-point margin (Washington State topped UTEP, 25.5 to 25). Reigning Back-to-Back NCAA Outdoor Champions Florida’s men claimed their second consecutive victory at NCAA Outdoors last June, also tying them with Arkansas (1992-2000) for the longest streak of top-3 finishes at the meet (9) by a men’s program since 1956. Of the Gators’ 61.5 points scored at NCAA Outdoors, 56.5 were individual, and athletes responsible for 39.5 of those individual points are back this year. KeAndre Bates (20) and Grant Holloway (18) combined for 38. A third consecutive title would make the Gators the first program to win three straight at NCAA Outdoors since Texas A&M did so from 2009-11. UTEP (1978-82) and Arkansas (1992-99) are the only other programs since 1975 to win three in a row. Another NCAA Outdoors title would be the Gators’ fifth all time, joining them with Arkansas (10) as the only other program to win five since 1980. Women Return to the Infield at NCAA Indoors Florida’s women finished fourth at NCAA Indoors, marking their first team poidum finish since the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships. The Gators secured their trophy with a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay. The Gators are further boosted outdoors by the return of sixth-year senior javelin thrower Avione Allgood, who transferred from Oklahoma in the summer of 2016 and received a medical redshirt for the 2017 season. All-Time Performances During Indoor Season Holloway broke Omar McLeod’s 60 hurdles collegiate record (7.42), beating McLeod in the record-breaking race last month. He ended the sea- son with three of the eight fastest times in NCAA history. [More info on page 4] The men’s 4x400 relay team also ran three of the eight fastset times in collegiate history, including the third-fastest time of all time (3:01.43) in a third-place finish at NCAA Indoor Championships. They also ran 3:02.23 at Clemson on Feb. 10, and 3:02.65 at SEC Indoors. Historically Consistent Gators• Florida’s men are one of three programs in Division I history to post seven straight

top-3 finishes at both NCAA Indoors and Outdoors (Florida, 2009-15; Arkansas, 1992-2000; UTEP, 1975-82).

Fastest Indoor 4x400 Relay Race of All Time• Florida, Southern California, and Texas A&M ran the three fastest 4x400 relay times in

track and field history at this year’s NCAA Indoor Championships. The Gators posted two of the nine fastest times ever run, stacking up as such on the world all-time list:

1. Southern California - 3:00.77 (March 10, 2018 - NCAA Indoors - College Station) Zach Shinnick, Rai Benjamin, Ricky Morgan Jr., Michael Norman2. Texas A&M - 3:01.39 (March 10, 2018 - NCAA Indoors - College Station) Ilolo Izu, Robert Grant, Devin Dixon, Mylik Kerley3. Florida - 3:01.43 (March 10, 2018 - NCAA Indoors - College Station) Kunle Fasasi, Grant Holloway, Chantz Sawyers, Benjamin Lobo Vedel4. Poland - 3:01.77 (March 4, 2018 - IAAF World Indoors - Birmingham, U.K.) Karol Zalewski, Rafat Omelko, Lukasz Krawczuk, Jakub Krzewina

7. Southern California - 3:01.98 (Feb. 10, 2018 - Clemson, S.C.) Zach Shinnick, Rai Benjamin, Ricky Morgan Jr., Michael Norman8. United States - 3:02.13 (March 9, 2014 - IAAF World Indoors - Sopot, Poland) Kyle Clemons, David Verburg, Kind Butler III, Calvin Smith

9. Florida - 3:02.23 (Feb. 10, 2018 - Clemson, S.C.) Kunle Fasasi, Grant Holloway, Chantz Sawyers, Benjamin Lobo Vedel

• UF’s NCAA splits: Fasasi - 46.42; Holloway - 44.91; Sawyers - 45.36; Lobo Vedel - 44.75

• Only Sawyers and Lobo Vedel ran career-best relay splits. Fasasi split 45.93 leading off in January, and Holloway split 44.81 at last year’s NCAA Indoors. All four running their career bests would be a time of 3:00.90.

David’s Hop, Skip and Jump Onto Collegiate All-Time Top 10• Junior Yanis David put a scare into American and collegiate record holder Keturah Orji

at SEC Indoors, popping off a 14.11-meter (46-3.5) jump on her final attempt--making her the No. 7 performer on the collegiate all-time top 10. Orji bounded to 14.18 meters (46-6.25) on her last jump to reclaim the title.

• David went on to finish second to Orji at NCAA Indoors, in addition to a fourth-place fin-ish in the long jump. David and Orji (2016-18) are the only two women in the last five NCAA Indoor Championships to post top-four finishes in both horizontal jumps.

• David was also second to Orji at last year’s NCAA Indoors, as well as the SEC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. David’s finished third at the last two NCAA Outdoors.

Women Who Could Lead Gators to NCAA Outdoors Infield• Florida is seeking its first podium finish at NCAA Outdoors since 2014, when they finished

fourth. The Gators finished fifth at last year’s NCAA Outdoors, missing the podium by a single point.

• Junior quarter-miler Sharrika Barnett is coming off a fourth-place finish at NCAA Indoors, as well as a massive PR of 51.07 seconds (No. 2 in school history). Barnett finished fifth at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships, where she recorded an outdoor PR of 51.67 (No. 8 in school history).

• On 4x400 relay duties, Barnett ran an anchor split of 50.11 seconds (outsplitting the entire field by half a second) to lead Florida to bronze at NCAA Indoors.

• Senior shot put thrower Lloydricia Cameron, who won this year’s SEC Indoor title and last year’s SEC Outdoor title, is coming off her best-ever finish at an NCAA Champion-ship. Cameron took fourth at NCAA Indoors, after three straight seventh-place finishes.

• Senior jumper Darrielle McQueen is coming off a sixth-place finish in the long jump at NCAA Indoors, and she qualified for NCAA Outdoors in both horizontal jumps last year.

• Sixth-year senior Avione Allgood, a 3-time Big 12 Conference champion, was the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships runner-up in the javelin throw for Oklahoma in 2014. Her personal record of 58.81 meters (192 feet, 11 inches) leads all returners by 1.75 meters.

KeAndre Bates:3-time NCAA Champion

• Seventh man in Division I history to sweep the horizontal jumps at NCAA Outdoors

• Sixth man in Division I history to post top-3 finishes in both horizontal jumps at three straight NCAA Championships (2016-17)

• Eighth man in Division I history to post top-3 finishes in both horizontal jumps at back to back NCAA Outdoors (2016-17)

• Bates also won three SEC titles in 2017 and became the 11th man in history to sweep the indoor long jump and triple jump titles

On Fire Since...• The 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships,

where he took second in the triple jump and third long jump, becoming the sixth under-classman in Division I history to finish top 3 in both horizontal jumps at NCAA Outdoors

• Bates went on to top-10 finishes in the long jump (6th) and triple jump (9th) at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, joining Arkansas’ Mike Conley (1984) and LSU’s Walter Davis (2000) as the only men since 1972 with top 10s in both horizontal jumps as a collegian

Gator Great• One of two Gators in history (Dion Bentley,

1990-93) to score in the long jump at four NCAA Indoor Championships

• One of three Gators in history (Omar Crad-dock, 2010-13); Christian Taylor, 2009-11) to score in the triple jump at three NCAA Indoor Championships

• One of three Gators in history ranked fifth or higher on the school’s All-Time Top 10 in both horizontal jumps indoors and outdoors (Marquis Dendy, Will Claye)

What If...• If Bates sweeps the horizontal jumps national

titles, he will be the fourth man in history to do so at consecutive NCAA Outdoors (Mike Conley; Robert Howard; Marquis Dendy)

• If Bates defends his national title in the long jump, it would be Florida’s fourth such title at NCAA Outdoors in the last five seasons

• If Bates defends his triple jump national title, it would be Florida’s eighth title in the last nine NCAA Outdoors

In 2015, Marquis Dendy became the first Florida Gator to win The Bowerman, track and field’s highest individual honor and the sport’s equivalent to college football’s Heisman Trophy.

Florida’s other two The Bowerman finalists since the award’s inception in 2009 are Christian Taylor (2011) and Tony McQuay (2012).

Last season, both KeAndre Bates and Grant Holloway were named semifinalists, with Holloway being the eighth freshman in history to accomplish the feat.

This watch list is trimmed to 10 semifinalists after the NCAA Outdoor Championships, followed by an announcement of three finalists roughly two weeks later.

The Bowerman is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track and field athletes in the nation. The award is named after Bill Bowerman, legendary former track and field and cross country coach for the University of Oregon and co-founder of NIKE.
