"This will be my last letter as your President, after serving in this position for the past four years. It has been my pleasure and honor to
have served in this position and I want to extend my sincere thanks to our Board Members and to everyone in the organization with whom I have had contact over the past several years. I will now be turning over the reins as President to the capable hands of Jim Cavender, a long time Board Member and current Executive Vice President. Jim is well known in the organization as he has also been very active in traveling to many of our local UFO meetings where he has had the pleasure of personal interaction with many of our members. I wish him all the best in this new position and I look forward to continuing to serve him and the entire UFO organization in the future."

As Warren has said, there's going to be a change in The Flight Deck. As of this month, I will be slipping into The Left Seat. Suffice it to say, Warren is going to be a tough act to follow. Under his capable leadership, great things have been happening
within our organization, and you may rest assured that trend will continue uninterrupted. One other thing: Warren is merely changing seats. In addition to his duties as president, Warren has actually been wearing two hats; he has been our treasurer albeit without the title. He will continue in that capacity, but now with the title. New membership applications as well as annual renewals will still be sent to our post office box in Carmel Valley, CA. Alternatively, you may join or renew on line using PayPal or your credit card. And speaking of changes in The Flight Deck, please know that there are opportunities for leadership within our organization. If you have executive experience, if you have a burning desire to put that experience to use and if you are willing to actively participate in the decision process, please use the link below to learn how you may offer your service to make the UFO even better than it already is.

Spokane UFO/WBMP July 18, 2018 (GEG) Spokane, WA
Twenty-three showed up at Signature Aviation at Spokane International for the UFO/Wright Brothers Master Pilot get together. We gathered upstairs, and we had a great view of the airport out the windows. We even had a QATAR Boeing 777 practice a landing and a taxi back for take-off—not a normal sight at Spokane. Bill Webber kicked off the meeting and talked about the UFO and how it has grown over the years. Bill also passed out a write up on “Never Forget Your Friends” which explained that your friends are with you for life and the UFO organization pro-motes making new friends with the use of the Friendship Directory.
Twenty-four members and friends gathered at the airport in Rockland, Maine for some good old fashioned UFO style camaraderie. They came in an assortment of six airplanes and one helicopter. Carl Carlson flew more than 4 hours round trip from Phelps, NY for his sampling of Maine lobster. Bill Po-duska whirled to the event in his Bell Long Ranger helicopter,
a very impressive aircraft indeed. Pilots, passengers, members and friends piled into a string of cars and proceeded down the road for 8 miles looking like a small funeral procession without a hearse. The hero was Larry Lymburner. He and Feliza brought their SUV and it saved the day for ground transportation. We all had such a good time we will have to do it again next year!

Georgetown, DE Get-Together July 18, 2018 (GED) Delaware Coastal Airport
Nine Octogenarian pilots, including 96-year old Fred Rapp, flew in from 5 states to Georgetown, DE. A total of 13 members and guests attended the luncheon, including local John Chirtea. Don Maxwell from Virginia flew the furthest in his SeaRay. The meeting was co-sponsored by Dan Brown, Area Rep. for Maryland and Delaware, and John Sullivan, the UFO Regional Manager, and was the first UFO meeting in several years held in Delaware. During the meet-ing, we discussed the problems associated with getting insurance at our age. All owner pilots in attendance have been able to obtain insurance, although some with rate increases. The meeting was followed by a guided tour of the Delaware Air Museum.

Nampa UFO/WBMP July 19, 2018 (MAN) Nampa, ID
The temperature was 102 and the 11 people attending had a nice cool place to view the Nampa airport from the ter-minal. The Tower Grill at the airport, served us great food. Norm Kinney and his daughter Kandi organized the meeting and everyone shared flying stories and memories that made it a really great meeting. Cliff Smart, with the FAA, gave a presentation on flight safety and presented the Wright Brothers Master Pilot award plaque to Bob
Hoff. Bob Jones was recognized for being the oldest member present (93) and for being the long-est registered pilot (1945), Roger Bourke for farthest distance traveled from Alta, Utah in his Mooney, and Don Taylor for most hours flown (over 35,000 hours). Joe Richards and Roger Bourke were also recognized for being the newest UFO members at the meeting.
South Texas Fly-In Aug 9, 2018 (VCT) Victoria, TX
Twenty members and guests attended the South Central and East Texas Fly-In which was held at the “Sky Restaurant”. Members had many wild stories about current and past flight activities. John Larrison (our UFO Area Rep and Fly-In host) gave a slide show presentation of his 1965 tour in Vietnam, flying the A-1E Skyraider with 225 combat missions. He showed several pictures of the A-1 and its systems, a series of slides of a close air mission, and a deployment to Thailand to perform low altitude air cover during helicopter pick up of downed aircrews. The meeting end-ed with closing remarks from the South Central and East Reps, John Larrison and Dan Nicholson. Meeting wrap-up and closing was by our UFO VP Jim Cavender.
North Texas Roundup XVII Aug 29, 2018 (GPM) Grand Prairie, TX
Nine loyal North Texas members got together at the Radial Cafe located in the terminal building to share lunch and renew acquaintances. We hadn’t assembled as a group since last December, so we had a lot of catching up to do. There were three presenters who offered up a variety of aviation topics. First, Max Bolen told us all about his trip to the recently concluded Air Venture fly-in Osh-kosh, WI. Then Dick Williams, a recent recipient of the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, told us about how to apply for this prestigious award. Finally, Jim Cavender, the Area Rep. for North Texas, brought a selection of reading material which has been published by UFO members. The food was great, the hangar talk was non-stop, and the camaraderie was palpable.

Northeast Region Fly-In Sep 12, 2018 Danbury, CT
It turned out to be the day of the Fly-In that wasn’t. Ceilings hovered around 500 ft and it was socked in all day. This event was to make up for one that was hit by tornadoes in May, but then Hurricane Francis. Once again, UFO members came through & joined hands for the kind of camaraderie that only UFOs can imagine. 26 members/friends participated in the “Drive-In” and enjoyed the day together. Our guest was Captain
Peter Goutiere, who will be 104, who stood and regaled with tales of his flying “the hump” in WW II. He told us that the secret to longevity is to be found in a cocktail of gin/ginger beer.
Friday Harbor Fly-In Sep 12, 2018 (FHR) Friday Harbor, WA
U n i t e d F l y i n g O c t o g e n a r i a n s
John Geyman organized this Fly-In. 56 had said they could be there/only 20 made it due to low ceilings. We met at Ernie’s Restaurant pictured with John Geyman’s J3 Cub. Those that made it to Friday Har-bor still had a great time & a fine lunch. This was the 11th year for a Friday Harbor meeting. Some out of towners made it to the meeting-Kenneth Coughlin, Oklahoma City & Don Frier, Palm Springs. Wally Weaver brought his 1915 Model T, which was a hit.
Ten UFO members/guests met at the home of Wray Fleming. Planes parked in front of his home at Cameron Park. It was a very enjoyable time as we became acquainted with new members. Wray has a charter business in Hawaii & was the pilot to take Charles Lindbergh to Maui for the last time. Mrs. Lindbergh wrote a letter of thanks for the excellent flight & care by the pilot. A great lunch, enjoyable company & a good time was had by all.

Kansas UFO Seminar Sept 20, 2018 Topeka (TOP), KS
A group of 33, UFO members, spouses, & presenters met for the 2018 Kansas Seminar, held at Billard Field. There were pilots from Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, & Mis-souri and gathered in the ‘UFO Section’ at the restaurant for a buffet while sharing flying stories. Then moved to the Aviation Explorer Scout Post hangar meeting room for a presentation by Bob Brock from the Kansas Dept. of Transportation. He discussed some aspects of flying in Kansas and that 3 of every 4 aircraft were produced there. James Lamb, FAAST Team Mgr. discussed the many merits of the Basic-Med Program, the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award (earned by 3 of those in attendance), and pointed out that many of the rest could probably qualify for this prestigious award. Members ap-preciated that Jim Cavender, UFO Area Rep and future UFO President, made the long journey. from Texas to attend.

He then got a helicopter rating and continued to fly in the military for 11 years. As a civilian, he has flown air taxi and light cargo, aerial photography, conducted a Boy Scout Merit Badge camp, counted turtle nests, and was a test pilot for Princeton University research into steep glideslopes for rotary wing approaches. He flies this C-123 (Ponderous Pol-ly) to airshows throughout the Southeast.
Elaine Thacher (81) Albuquerque, NM
Dick began flying at the age of 40, thinking he would just be happy learning to fly solo, but he became an avid flyer after that experi-ence. He has flown Navion airplanes for about 5,000 hours and has landed a plane in all 50 states—pretty impressive!! Dick is a mem-ber of The American Navion Society, (inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2014), AOPA, EAA, Vintage Aircraft Association, Warbirds of America and is a past president of the Southern Navion Air Group.
Bill Rust (83) New Bern, NC

Ted got a degree in Aero Engi-neering and worked for Douglas Aircraft, working with missile launching and was Chief Engi-neer of the SIV upper stage of the Apollo moon rocket. He flew gliders for 20 years, starting when he was 40. He built a Flightstar ultra light, then a Rans 6S6. He has flown a motor glider (Ximango),
an Ercoupe, and now flies this Sting LSA (built in Czech Republic) of mainly carbon fiber.
Richard got his Private Certificate while a cadet in the Air Force ROTC in 1959. He served 3 years doing Geodetic Surveying for the Minuteman, At-las & Jupiter missiles. He then returned to civil-ian life, continuing flight training with the Texas Air National Guard. Richard has owned a Cessna 175, Cessna Turbo 210, Beechcraft Baron, Cessna Skymaster and now this Piper Aerostar 702P.

J. Homer was just a boy when his dad bought a brand new Aeronca 7AC, which was used to spray crops. When he was 14, he got to ‘solo’ in the Aeronca at their farm. When J. Homer’s dad quit flying, the Aeronca came to him. He has flown it 2-3 times a week and it will go to his son in Nebraska when he is done flying it., and then to his grandson, who is now taking flying lessons. J. Homer also flies a M20J Mooney for traveling. He has over 5,000 hours.
Robert Burke (81) Clinton, MO
Clinton first flew a Taylorcraft in 1947. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958 and flew for the Navy in at least 16 different airplanes. He then went to work for Delta airlines, flying CV880, DC9, B727, L1011, and L15, retiring as an international captain. In General Avi-ation, he has flown in at least 8 types of airplanes. Clin-ton has over 21,043 hours with 4,446 in the Navy, 15,804 for Delta, and 793 in General Aviation.. What a career.

Edward got the flying bug when he was 10 years old when he got to go up in a PT-19 with a friend. In 1957, he took his first lesson in a J-3 Cub. By 1967, he was a private pilot. After owning 4 other planes, he now owns this Tri Pacer PA22 that he has been flying for 13 years. He takes an annu-al trip to Osh Kosh in the plane, and enjoys sleeping under the wing there. His family gave him a UFO membership on his 80th birthday. What a great gift!!
Herman was in his 40s before he started flying, getting his private then and soon after that, his instrument, commercial and multi-engine ratings. He has about 890 hours, mostly in rented Piper Warrior, Piper Arrow and Cessna Centurion. He was checked out in a Remos and Skycatcher and is inter-ested in LSAs and hoping they will become available to rent in his area.
