MANA GE MENT’S MESSAGE Dear Customer, We are a small business, all born and raised in Saskatchewan. What started as a commercial honey bus iness in 1983 producing 1/3 of a million lbs of honey annually, my wife and I diversified into trees in 1989 having repeatedly planted in excess of 20,000 trees for many years. In 2000 we re-purposed the bus iness and only do trees now. We are committed to providing quality products and excellent service to all of our customers. • From the perspective of trees, we were originally known for our exceptional

Christmas trees, wreaths and garland from our own plantation. We diversified further in the 1990’s and began growing trees and shrubs specifically for the nursery trade.

One of our mottos: “You can plant anytime until freeze up” is so very true of nursery stock. We however dig in spring and fall with several different tree spades. Nursery products are available for pickup or delivery direct from our plantations starting the last week of April until late October. November is when we ship Christmas trees and all the festive joy they impart. Our products are annually shipped from Winnipeg to Whitehorse in those tractor trailers we see on the open road. We have some firsts behind us: • First in the Saskatchewan Nursery Industry to have potter-type tree spades connected

to loaders for field digging trees and shrubs • First to offer perfectly dug field grown - consumer friendly Do it Yourself products

potted into sizes ranging from 20 inch to 12 foot heights in plastic pots #5 to #25 (think of US gallons)

• First to introduce thousands of Balsam Fir as a nursery product up to 16 feet • Several 1st P lace finishes in Christmas tree competitions Looking through our catalogue may prompt questions about our products, please call us for further information. We hope to make your experience in dealing with us enjoyable this year and into the future. Cheers from us: Kelly & Ray Gaudet, Anne Bitschy - Nursery Manager, Bruce Johnson - Lead Hand P.S. Lets go green!!!

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY - NURSERY COSTS INCREASING CAUSED BY SEASONAL LABOUR SHORTAGE • Saskatchewan’s economy is built upon exporting raw materials and

with increasing global demand, the availability of retaining season help has become very challenging prompting a necessary increase in wages. This province is experiencing what most of the country has dealt with for decades; growth and shortages of labour, services and escalating costs of simply being in business. Growing nursery stock and Christ-mas trees necessitates many pairs of hands and with labour shortages being felt, our wages paid continue to increase significantly.

GLOBAL WARMING IMPACTS ON TREES • When examining descriptions of nursery stock we mention Zones. This

refers to how hardy the plant material is in withstanding the forces of nature. When you see Zone 1 or 2 this means you can typically plant this plant material most anywhere in the prairie region. If Zone 3 or greater is indicated, you must consider planting in microclimates that are somewhat sheltered from the harsher more exposed elements of nature. Examples of this is extreme temperature variations in a day such as –29 C to +8. When these temperature swings take place another factor is typically at play. During the lengthening days of late winter we get the warmth of the sun but also the reflections of this brilliance off the snow and when considering tree roots are frozen in the ground the tree above is sometimes taking it twice as hard resulting in Winter-burn & winter drying. Winter-burn may impact trees causing some new buds to abort and for conifers their needles can turn red and eventually fall off. This rarely causes the death of plants, however corrective pruning may be in order along with a degree of patience in awaiting the new growth. Winter drying occurs if a tree stand lacks summer/fall moisture with the resulting death of some trees outright.

PLANTING, INVENTORY & TRANSPORTATION • Just like commercial landscapers, you can plant anytime throughout the

three seasons until freeze up. • Our inventory build up takes place in the spring when we dig. We can

top up shortages of conifers by resuming the dig in late August, Sep-tember and October.

• Pickups or shipments occur during the three warmest seasons. You must have a pre-arranged appointment to pickup nursery stock.. espe-cially large wire basket trees requiring loaders for handling such beauti-ful and instant yard specimens.

IDEAS FROM THE NURSERY DESK When selecting plant materials, the following snippets are why it’s such a great idea to plant trees and shrubs.

Trees enhance almost any environment such as the beautification of golf courses, parks, boulevards, cityscapes, residential landscapes and general development.

Trees provide shade from the sun, shelter from the winter winds thus reducing cooling & heating bills. Create additional environments and attract wildlife. These endeavors result in increased property values.

Planting non-typical or unusual species adds biodiversity to your immediate environment. The establishment of many diverse species promotes the added benefits of buffering against the onslaught of significant pestilence issues. These issues may threaten the mono-cultural species of your area. With broader

diversity comes further checks and balances providing additional natural buffers to assist in protecting what already exists in your local environment. One ought

to consider this one aspect of biodiversity not only from an aesthetic perspective but also as an environmental safety check-valve. Adding different species sooner than later will most likely pay handsome rewards years down the road.

Lure your residents away from flat-screens with inviting places to get physical. Get the children of your communities involved and start planting, entice them to get onboard and make it fun. They will feel a deep attachment to this place for the rest of their life, leave a tribute for the earth. Establish walkways, jogging paths and adventuresome biking trails. Getting under the natural protection of large shade trees enable you to ditch the umbrellas and sunscreen. Trees also can provide shelter from the cool evening breeze. Provide great spaces so neighbors have an opportunity to meet.

Make it larger than life, have the local business community

8

contribute the shovels, wagons, water hoses, buckets, soil if required and what ever else you can dream of, create it and they will come and stay.

Choosing and implementing new policies can be daunting. How adventurous are you prepared to be? Standing out in the crowd isn’t such a bad thing you know, especially if it’s unselfish. Think of the generations to come, wouldn’t it be

nice to have more green spaces than what already exists!

Watch your place grow! Create a visual and environmental impact; trap pollution, carbon dioxide and provide us all with oxygen so that the world may continue to exist. Start small - dream - think big.

If you have questions, we'd be happy to assist you in your plans, provide you with suggestions, in addition to a sustainable long term source of extra premium trees. As a reminder, we also carry those Christmas trees or accessories for your favorite clients’ halls or foyers.

As always, these past years have been bustling with activity. We’re always here during the week, busy with the many different aspects of our endeavors. As has always been our policy, we are here for you.

From a link sent to me recently: Imagine if trees gave free wifi. We’d all be planting like crazy… It’s a pity they only give us the oxygen we breath!

Get planting! Ensure a green world with clean air and water for our children…..

Apply your inspiration, it’s a pushover My name is Anne (Nursery Manager) and I am here to help you on your journey!

PLANTING & CARE

When you purchase quality nursery stock it’s very im-portant to maintain the plant’s health and vigour. Follow these few simple steps to enjoy a healthy plant for many years to come. The way you handle your shrubs and trees impacts their long term success! Keep storage to a minimum, ensur-ing they are in a cooler area and plant ASAP. Consider-ing their age, and the years they have ahead of them, the act of planting is very brief; however this is your most critical step! Roots must be kept moist! Survival is de-pendent on root growth capacity. Next, commit yourself to giving each tree the five years it takes to fully estab-lish for a healthy future. Following these tips insures rapid establishment of your trees and shrubs.

PREPARATION • “Call Before You Dig”. As part of the plant-ing process, it’s crucial that your underground lines are located. This free service is provided by the utilities such as telephone, gas, etc. & must

be called as a cautionary measure. Their contact numbers are found in the government Blue Pages. For Saskatchewan the number is 1-866-828-4888. In most cases two working days are required to have your property marked out. F.Y.I.: tree spades/augers account for 40% of the underground lines or cables cut in landscape related work!

TRANSPORTING TREES & SHRUBS IN POTS & WIRE BASKETS • Transport all nursery stock with a consideration of

the wind factor. Either haul within your vehicle or lay down trees and shrubs in a pickup truck box or trailer. Cover with an air tarp or one which is quick-ly removed at the destination to prevent wind burn and over-heating. You will be able to handle by hand (sometimes two people required) all bare-root stock and most of the shrubbery and trees which is planted up and into #7 pots. After this size you will require an extra person and would benefit from the use of a hand truck/wheeler for all potted material up to #25 pot size. To handle wire basket trees un-load with a tractor, skid steer or compact track load-

er with bucket or forks with securely fastened chains attached to both the lifting device while the basket is attached with two hooks (one on each side at 1:00 & 5:00) with a lift capacity of 1000 lbs. Lift by wire cage only - handle with care. Due to the weight factor, never allow a wire basket tree to be dropped, shaken or handled by the trunk. Any trauma to a wire basket tree may loosen the soil or break the trunk in the ball. Damage will eventually show up in a year or two.

SHORT TERM STORAGE • Store plants away from sun and wind. • Mist each tree with water to rehydrate after

transport. • Bare-root trees should be heeled-in; dig a trench

and plant trees side by side standing upright. Cover roots with moist soil; ensure there are no air pock-ets around roots. When ready for planting, gently lift out of the soil and relocate before soil moisture diminishes. Keep roots moist but not standing in water – roots left in a pail of water for more than three hours will drown some species.

• Store light weight container grown shrubs/trees in shade and out of wind prior to planting. These must be watered daily ensuring there is added weight to each pot after watering. If soil mixture is dry, water will run out of drain holes immediately, and not impregnate into soil mixture.

• Store heavy weight potted and wire basket plants in a protected area away from direct sun and wind. The day prior to planting, thoroughly water the potted plant to ensure that it does not fall apart dur-ing the planting.

• Lay a tarp loosely over wire basket to keep sun/wind from drying them out.

TREE PLANTING - AVOID THE FOLLOWING CONCERNS • Planting trees too close together • Preventing access to utility transformers • Planting too close to buildings, homes or one an-

other • Planting tall trees near utility lines

PLANTING TIPS FOR ALL TREES & SHRUBS • Dig hole 1.5 times wider than the root spread or

container width being planted. • We prefer to use loaders with powered augers or V

buckets to dig holes of various diameters and depths, however we also employ a variety of hand-held sharpened shovels and other digging tools.

• Measure the plant from the ground to the soil level inside the pot. Dig the hole to that depth. The plant should sit on very firm soil. The hole should be six inches wider than the root ball, wider if it is poor quality soil. Place the soil you are removing from the hole in a wheelbarrow or on a tarp for reuse.

• The trees and shrubs must sit on very firm soil. Dig the hole and place the soil you are removing off to the side (in a wheelbarrow or a tarp for exam-ple). Dig the hole to the same depth the root ball is. You want the finished planted root ball at the exact same depth it came out of the nursery, no deeper or shallower.

• Resources permitting, the soil that is removed from the hole could be improved by mixing in a good rich amendment. Using quality top soil and per-haps a little bit of organic matter such as peat moss and compost will help most trees and shrubs adapt to their new environment for a good healthy start, and to get the plant acclimated to its new location.

• The main roots of trees travel horizontally 1 inch/2.5 cm under the surface. DO NOT PLANT DEEPER AND DO NOT COVER THE TOP OF THE ROOT BALL WITH ANY SOIL.

• Notice the color change on the bark to assist in de-termining the actual soil line.

• Avoid leaving the exposed roots in the sun or wind any longer than absolutely needed. Root disturb-ance must be kept to an absolute minimum.

• Field grown product are heavy, only handle plant by the container, never by the trunk, this is a poten-tial breaking point.

• Save yourself considerable effort and co-ordinate the digging of holes to coincide with the arrival of heavy trees and shrubs at your planting site: Be smart and unload trees beside each pre-dug or about to be dug hole. If you unload into a holding area instead, you’ll want mechanization to facilitate the re-handling later.

CUTTINGS: • When your receive this type of product they may be

stored in a cool dark place or sealed in a fridge. • Prior to planting these must be soaked in water for

no less than tree full days to allow for complete rehydration. You must ensure all the cutting are pointing upwards in the vessel which the cutting are immersed in. Keep these upright and replace the water daily. The level of water should be half to two thirds up the stem.

• When planting, you must have two buds above the soil line with dirt firmly packed below.

• You MUST water these within 24 hours and contin-ue to ensure the soil remains moist until freeze up (use a moisture meter).

• The success of cuttings is entirely depended on care, moisture, warmth of the summer sun and clearing away unwanted competitive vegetation.

• Applying mulch adds an elevated degree of moist soil conditions to allow the cutting to both break open the buds and grow vertically but more im-portantly to grow roots and penetrate the soil.

BARE ROOT TREES AND SHRUBS: • Do not take out of moist sawdust until ready to in-

sert into prepared hole. In the planting hole, spread/fan out roots and back fill with soil. If hot and windy, plant after 4:00 p.m - never in the heat of the day! Have lots of water available to keep this very delicate root system moist.

CONTAINER GROWN SHRUBS AND SOME SHADE TREES • For those plants grown in a special lightweight fi-

brous soil mixture, these require daily watering un-til well rooted into a permanent home.

• Do yourself a favor, handle only by the pot, NEV-ER THE TRUNK.

• When ready to remove shrub from pot, place hand over top of root ball slipping trunk between spread fingers.

• Flip pot upside down holding on to plant and tap pot with hand tool or heel of hand to remove plant.

• Make four vertical score marks one inch/2.5 cm deep around root ball. This is important to discour-age circling (girdling) of roots after planting. Do this to greatly extend life expectancy.

FIELD GROWN POTTED TREES AND SHRUBS • This process usually requires cutting and

literally destroying the pot. Have pot at edge of pre-pared hole, get a sharp linoleum or locking blade knife (utility knife is not strong enough!) or electric reciprocating saw and cut off the bottom of the pot, starting at a drain hole opening by spinning the pot around as you cut. Drag the potted tree into the hole and stand upright. Begin to back fill soil and tamp it firm around the bottom of the root ball. Leave an entry point to get your knife into another drain hole and cut the pot vertically upwards on pot wall towards rim, cut through the pot rim (watch your neck). Ensure the tree is perfectly upright and straight. Continue to add more soil and tamp it in firm, this should be done with every four inches / 10 cm of soil. Lift out pot before you finish back filling by slipping the pot up and away. The top of the backfilling soil should be level with the outer edge of the root ball.

FIELD GROWN WIRE BASKET TREES (BALL & BURLAP): • Field grown trees are very heavy, handling wire

baskets requires caution; they are very heavy and you’re exposed to personal injury if not handled with caution. We transport them several ways, typically with either a loading arm with suspended chains with modified hooks to grab the top of the wire basket (the basket strains and may deform slightly under the heavy weight), or with hydraulic forks which squeeze the root ball. Buckets will work to lift the trees but extreme caution is re-quired (secure within the bucket with a chain and consider additional personal protection in the event the tree topples over and potentially strikes the equipment operator). Pending the size of the bas-ket, your average 10 foot tree in a 36 inch basket weighs 1,100 pounds. Taller 12+ foot trees are It’s the root ball which weighs the most therefore be careful when handling and nudging one way or another. Do not handle by the trunk, this is a po-tential breaking point.

• With everything still intact including the burlap and wire cage, carefully manoeuvre the tree into the planting hole and check that the depth is identi-

Page 14: 2018 - GAUDET CATALOGUE - WEB VERSION - 2018 September … · diverse species promotes the added benefits of buffering agains t the onslaught of significant pestilence issues. These

14

cal to the root ball. The top outer edge of the root ball should be level with the surrounding ground; if not, repeat the procedure to get it right.

• Add just a few scoops of soil to the bottom of the hole and tamp it firmly around the root ball. This will greatly assist with securing the tree firmly in place. Ensure the tree is perfectly upright and straight. Continue to add more soil and tamp it in firm, this should be done with every four inches/10 cm of soil. The top of the backfilling soil should be level with the outer edge of the root ball. Do not cover the top of the root ball with any soil.

• Wire basket trees are held together and kept snug with a biodegradable cord or long lasting nylon strap. If your basket was laced with a nylon strap, it must be removed once the tree is in the hole. Some customers may also re-move the top ring on the wire basket.

STAKING TREES: • Trees over 5 feet/1.5 meters in height should be staked to prevent the wind

from blowing them crooked. • Stake with two or more fence posts, 5/8 inch rebar or T-bar to stabilize the

tree and root ball after planting - do not stake too high and do not stake to tight. Stake the tree no higher than 2/3 it’s height.

• The industry employs 12 gauge wire or polypropylene rope for fastening the tree to the stake. Protect the tree trunk by feeding the portion of wire or rope through a 10-inch long length of water hose. The hose or any other type of soft flexible material may be used to loop around the tender growing bark.

• With the tree secured you will now be able to remove all the cord/rope se-curing the top of the wire basket together. Then remove/cut off the burlap from just the topmost portion of the root ball. Follow this procedure to pre-vent future girdling of the tree trunk.

• Stake for the first year only and mark your following year’s calendar as a reminder to remove the stakes and wire, etc.

CREATE A BERM & MOAT: • Use the displaced soil from when the hole was dug to build a raised berm to

create a moat similar to that which surrounds a castle. Think of a donut preventing water run-off.

• This moat will help maximize the amount of water that gets down to the root zone. When you water your investment to ensure good moist soil for the plant all the way to the bottom, you are reducing transplant shock and dehydration problems later as the top level of the soil dries.

WATER: • Watering is crucial: dry soil is a killer for all new plants. Do so immediate-

ly after planting with a good soaking. If you create the berm and moat, fill it with water and you’ll appreciate that extra effort often.

• The first good watering of newly disturbed soil will be your last good op-portunity to double check to make sure tree is still straight. Within the first three good soakings, the soil will settle and firm up eliminating air pockets and fuse the soil particles together to start the new relationship of the trees

and shrubs to their surrounding soil. Add more soil around the edges if settling occurs.

• Never allow soil around newly planted trees and shrubs to dry out. Successful establishment in the first year requires consistent soil moisture. In very hot, windy weather, water as much as two or three times a week (our nursery is watered daily).

• Depending on soil types, you may be required to ensure your trees receive the equivalent of 2.5 gal-lons per inch/4 litres per cm of trunk diameter). Water twice a week throughout the hottest part of the growing season. On the other hand you don’t want to drown your trees and shrubs either - de-pend on a moisture meter.

• A Moisture Meter is a low cost probe and will assist in determining soil moisture. Insert into the soil near the root ball and add water if the Mois-ture Meter indicates such. A deciduous tree shows lack of moisture by wilting within days, whereas coniferous trees might not show signs of lack of moisture for up to two weeks, unfortunately by then the damage might not be reversible. It is im-portant to keep the moisture content up during the growing season as well as insuring your plants go into the dormant stage in the fall well watered so that when they begin to come alive in spring they have a great start and another prolific growing sea-son. These Moisture Meters are a very inexpen-sive way to determine the water requirements of plants and will reduce the risk of your trees perish-ing. GET ONE!!!

• In October until freeze up, water five feet beyond the trunk of the tree to minimize winter desicca-tion. Keep tree consistently moist for the next five years.

MULCH: • Mulches are a must, assisting in maintaining and

preserving soil moisture. This can be comprised of grass clippings, leaf material, straw, plastic, tire crumb, old carpet flipped upside down, wet news-print and other stuff.

• If wood chips are used, apply no deeper than 4 inches/10 cm deep and keep off the trunk of the tree.

• Mulch will minimize weeds which hamper growth and survival by thieving moisture and nutrients.

FERTILITY: • In the spring, fertilize only once with 10-52-10 water soluble fertilizer and

follow manufacturer recommendations to ensure root establishment. If it is necessary to fertilize a second time, do so only once with 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer and follow manufacturer recom-mendations for vigorous top growth and vibrant deep colour. Refrain from over fertilization! You run the risk of severely burning the root system and permanently damaging the tree.

PESTILENCE: • Be vigilant of localized colour changes in your

foliage. Take a picture then search for pests of the species in question on “Google Images”.

ANTI-DESICCANTS: • Applied to foliage of trees, especially those ex-

posed on harsh windy sites prior to freeze-up. It’s a good idea to apply this product in the late fall to minimize the risk of winter burn in March causing the needles and foliage to turn brown, which indi-cates drought stress, as the sun is intense and re-flects off the snow causing the plant to heat up and dry out.

REALITY: • Satisfaction is directly related to personal care and

attention. It’s your investment and the desire to succeed is the objective. Allocate the future time to dedicate the care. Be patient, it’s worth it!!!

FIR Balsam (Abies balsamea) – Zone 1b Height 75 ft/23 m Spread 16 ft/5 m. This NATIVE SPECIES IS THE MOST VERSATILE TREE WE GROW WITH A REMARKABLE ADAPTABILITY. Foliage is soft and blunt tipped with deep green upper and bluish undersides. The trees’ nar-row pyramidal form resembles the lances used in medieval jousting. The trunk has a smooth surface of silver-greyish-mauve bark with many unusual round resinous blisters of liquid pitch (often the size of marbles).

Plant Balsam Fir ANYWHERE except in water logged areas. Its adaptabil-ity is attributable to being a twilight species, meaning as a forest matures and is prepared for regeneration whether by natural burns or other signifi-cant natural processes, Balsam Fir begins to establish itself under a closed canopy with little sun shining through. Plant them to rejuvenate urban for-est bluffs or in crowded competitive places where vegetative pressure en-croaches or in any shady area as well in full sunlight on golf course fair-ways and sandy beaches. Where ever they are planted, ensure they estab-

EVERGREEN TREES (conifers)

• Evergreens, the cornerstones of landscape design, provide colour all year long. Ranging from s mall to tall, narrow to broad, they are fea-tured in rock gardens, bordering structures, standing alone or in group-ings. Plant as a single specimen privacy screen, grace property edges and lanes or many as windbreaks. Their elegance may exceed a century of time.

• Conifers are dug in spring until bud break, digging resumes later August until winter. Plant anytime (all season long) until freeze up.

lish with sufficient moisture around their roots. After establishment they are very tolerant of drought and from a bio-diversity perspective and a poten-tial to reach 150-200 years of age, COULD BE NATURALIZED in all urban and rural settings requiring year round greenery. Ideal alternative to all other conifers especially where Colorado Spruce is quite abundant.

It’s the distinctively pleasant and spicy aromatic fragrance of natural cut Christmas trees. The traditional uses of balsam fir were for its antiseptic and stimulatory effects; such as was used in external applications to combat injuries or for disorders such as chest infections, urinary, cystitis and ap-plied as a herbal plaster and as a deodorant. This resin in the bark blisters was also the source of a confection prior to the advent of chewing gum, plus as a resinous fuel used in torches. Not so long ago when we all had time on our hands and before the pharmaceutical industry came along… this knowledge is becoming obscured in history.

Unfortunately, Balsam Fir is rare in the horticultural trade, and should be grown and used more often!

PINE Red (Pinus Resinosa) [also know as Norway Pine] - Zone 2 - Height 100 ft/30 m Spread 23 ft/7 m Needle length 10-15 cm Native to North America. Drought tolerant long-needled pine. Beautiful by itself or within groupings of large areas. Very popular tree in other regions, but not here! There is a 90 year old group planting near us; the understory is covered in long needles and if one observes closely, it is pockmarked with small stashes of cones the squirrels stash away. This pro-vincial planting is a favourite among some foresters we know :) Perfect for it’s beauty and the future value as a saw log!

LARCH Siberian (Larix sibirica) – Zone 2 Height 60 ft/18 m Spread 25 ft/8 m Needle Length 15-40 mm The Platypus of conifers…the only one which looses its foliage annually. A deciduous conifer with tufts of 15 - 60 soft green nee-dles which turn golden yellow in fall and reddish-grey bark. Grows equally well in full sunlight and in groupings. Capable of growing through tall native grass when planted as a seed-ling. This tree grows slightly faster than a Scots Pine which is also a fast grower. A beautiful speci-men tree which should be utilized much more often. Larch wood products are being used in residential and commercial applications because of it durabil-ity on flooring, doors and windows which resistant rot. Dug in spring or later October.

SPRUCE SPRUCE Black Hills (Picea glauca 'Densata') – Zone 2 Height 60 ft/19 m Spread 25 ft/8m Gorgeous conifer with exceptional symmetry displaying upright dense branches covered with deeper green single, short & stiff needles. The foliage becomes darker in fall-winter when compared to it’s cousin, White Spruce. Quite versatile; may be planted under a closed canopy with little sun shining through all the way to the open sky. Tolerant to many soil types & drought conditions when established. We recommend this species in any location for two reasons, firstly because of its beauty (rivaled only by Colorado Spruce) and secondly, be it the front or back yard, along lane ways, in groupings with other species or in the full force of the north-west winds. This tree grows faster than most conifers, is resilient to mother nature and is greatly under-represented in the nursery trade.

MARKING & TRACKING ITEMS • Plan & v isualize your planting site by using string to make straight lines be-

tween two points, for groupings poke wire stake flags to identify placement (colour coordinate your flags by associating pink for Pines or Poplars, blue for Balsam Fir, white for White Spruce, etc.) & mark the planting spots using spray paint to indicate where your about to dig.

• Flagging tape is useful to identify landmarks, mark out sites, use to corrective-ly prune trees & tie up new leaders, use for caution & safety identification.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

MOISTURE & IRRIGATION • A Moisture Meter is a low cost probe which will assist in deter-

mining soil moisture. Insert into the soil near the root ball and add water if the Moisture Meter indicates such.

• Deciduous trees display lack of moisture with leaves wilt ing. Conif-erous trees might not show signs of lack of moisture for up to two weeks, unfortunately by then the damage to the ends of the needles (which turn red) is not reversible.

• It is important to keep the moisture content up during the growing season as well as insuring your plants go into the dormant stage in the fall well watered. Insure spring arrives with the surrounding ground around your plantings being amply moist for a great start and another prolific growing season.

• We suggest keeping one in your vehicle to check your shelter-belt plantings and all other remote sites, just so you can monitor without ever wondering.

• Moisture Meters are your guarantee to determine water requirements of plants reducing risk of trees perishing. Keep newly planted trees consistently moist for the next five years… PROBE TO PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT!

PLANTING TOOLS, STAKES, STRAPS • When planting potted trees you require a kn ife to cut the pot away from the

root ball. A linoleum knife is ideal because of its solid curved blade and large wooden handle is easy to grip and be safe (reciprocating saw is even easier).

• Rapid growth on some trees benefit from caning with Bamboo to maintain straight trucks. Taller stakes must be used to keep trees from leaning over until roots are re-established into their new surroundings (2 to 3 years). Use two inch diameter untreated wooden fence posts or metal T-bar pounded into the ground then secure 18 gauge wire or rope to the stake and wrap around the truck to minimize movement of the tree (allow for a bit of movement and re-member the truck diameter grows annually).

• You must protect the bark and feeding the wire or rope through soft and supple water or fire hose straps will insure you do not incur injury to the truck.

• Pruning shears are the proper tool to trim and maintain the branches of all your trees, use hedge shears for all the shrub.

STREE MOVING - SPADING - RELOCATION This service offered only from the end of August until freeze up. In the spring we harvest our own plantations. TRANSPLANTING: Trees, hedges and shrubs are surprisingly simple to transplant providing of course you have the appropriate expertise and specialized equipment. We have a full com-plement of tree moving equipment capable of digging trees up to a 5 inch/12.5 cm caliper trunk size. This equipment allows us to transplant trees and shrubs on your property or from ours. Answer all the fo llowing points favorably to see if it’s prac-tical to pursue moving the tree(s) and proceed in the relocation or a site visitation may become a prerequisite. If you’re a good candidate, its full steam ahead… SIZE MATTERS: • Measure the diameter (circumference/3.14) of the trunk 150mm (6") above-

ground level to determine size of t ree. Trees over 5 inches in diameter can’t be moved by us. Other factors which may present limitations are: dry hard pan or stones larger than six inches.

• When digging root balls, the adage of “Bigger is Better” holds very true. PROXIMITY TO LINES AND BUILDINGS: • We start the process of underground line locates and receive a ticket number

and email including a map with site details and the actual site itself is further flagged or spray painted for insurance purposes on each installation/relocation as part of the planting process/ground disturbance. This service is provided by the main utilit ies only; telephone, gas, power. If you have additional lines bur-ied underground you must notify us of these as well! Usually less than five working days are required to have your property marked out.

• Decisions are required if utilities are within 1.5 meters of the digging area. It’s not safe to dig with mechanized equipment unless cables have been exposed and day-lighted by hand. We require 3 feet/.9 m depth for a 45 inch spade.

• Notify us prior to our arrival if there is any doubt about locates. At which point a decision about hand digging your hole(s) by yourself or us must be agreed to.

• Our rates are posted under SERVICES OFFERED - INSTALLATIONS - STAFF/PERSONAL ON THE GROUND - Fee is pro-rated on an hourly basis. Trees growing directly over the utility or septic areas can’t be moved. (Drain pipes and irrigation lines are not as critical.)

• F.Y.I.: tree spades/augers account for 40% of the underground lines or cables cut in landscape related work!

ACCESSABILITY & GROUND CONDITIONS: • Is there enough space to access the tree and turn around? Trees planted within

ground, if rocks are not moving aside or are impenetrable due to their size, we may not be able to dig for you.

• Other conditions of hard pan may exist such as a very deep and dry clay soil rendering the lack of penetration.

STATE OF INDUSTRY - CHRISTMAS TREES

• BALSAM FIR - NATURAL GRADE (expanding selection) with competitive price point. This is superior to Douglas Fir commonly available in past years.

• FRAS ER FIR supply is being outstripped compared to availability and prices continues upwards significantly this year and with the US vs Canadian dollar seeing a 30+% devaluation two years ago, American buyer pressure is respon-sible for the escalating price increase.

• COLORADO & MEYERS SPRUCE provide a variation for a tree lot.

• KEEP-ABILITY of Christmas trees comes down to needle retention. Some species are better than others at withstanding -25 to -40 degree temperatures on the regions retail lots. Acceptable trees must experience repeated freezing weather prior to harvest. Growing your product in Prince Albert with a hardi-ness rating of Zone 1B-2A essentially means that if it grew here, the product acts as it should. Our city, with a frost bitten winter climate, is the third coldest

tems for days ahead of time to firm up the ground. We do have available ply-wood to lay down for short distance protection at additional cost.

• If we are not able to successfully dig, our min imum bill will be 1 hour to cover the travel time expense. If you are unsure, we suggest digging a test hole with a shovel, post-hole digger, auger or mini excavator. If the planting area is known to be rocky or very compacted, you will be charged up to 20% more to cover our wear and tear on equipment and the extra t ime required to perform a nor-mal task.

HOMEOWNER: PREPARATIONS & SAFETY • Include pre-watering the trees during dry spells many days ahead of the sched-

uled dig. This step also causes less stress to the tree during its re-establishment. • At time of relocating trees, have a plentiful water source available to each tree. • Mark the re-location point of trees and specify where each tree goes if need be. • To speed up the process; clear driveway and the space in front of your home,

remove fences, lawn obstacles, clothes lines, etc. from the area. • Keep pets especially dogs indoors, kenneled or secured while crew is on-site. • Consider the danger children may face when this equipment is nearby. We will

be watchful however you’ll want to keep a very close eye upon each of them. TRANSPLANTING CARE INSTRUCTIONS: ⇒ Following the relocation of the tree(s). There will be the ongoing need to wa-

ter; use a moisture meter and check the ground for moisture conditions and water accordingly. Good maintenance and aftercare is the key to successfully establishing a newly planted tree. You must check and insure that the ground surrounding your trees is maintained moist. You’ll be surprised how much the trees will require to successfully transition into the new location. Add mulch to the root ball area. A regular watering schedule is crit ical to ensure survival of the tree for the following year especially during dry summer months. Tree health and survival is going to become your main priority to ensure viability, vigor and to protect your investment. For your benefit we will provide you with both verbal and written CARE INSTRUCTIONS (these are available on our website www.t reesrus.ca.)

CHRISTMAS TREES GRADES GRADE PARTICULARS • Premium: Dense and uniform on no less than three sides, with

minor imperfections. • No. 1 & Better: Medium to full density, uniform on no less than three

sides with minor imperfections, stem may be partially visible. • Econo Grade: Light to heavy density, colour may be lighter, nice on

two and a half plus sides with minor gaps & imperfections on the nicest sides, stem is sometimes visible (corner tree).

• Natural Grade: Light density with space between branches with visible stem, a natural well formed look, sometimes lightly sheared.

SIZE OF TREES • Measures the entire length of the tree, from the butt to the tip of the

leader (top most branch).

CONSIDERATIONS • This is a natural product which has variations in shape, tapper, density,

colour, needle length, etc. The crews who work in this industry are subjected to all measures of weather ranging from extreme heat, cold, drizzle, rain, sleet, snow, wind and calm. These conditions add to some of the variance of the products offered, which is offered in good faith!

in the country. Our few suppliers are all in very cold places. What continues to be BAD FOR BUSINESS are trees coming from warmer coastal regions which may not experience these repeated freezing temperatures. The regrettable risk of premature green needle drop (current years growth) in the retailer’s lot or worse; the consumers home kills the market for all… When this unacceptable situation occurs, customers seek out another retailers or worse, purchase an artificial tree. Compounding the problem; some customers stop displaying a tree period and there may go one significant aspect of the holidays!

• SHIPPING Christmas trees during the last two weeks of November coincides with unpredictable weather as snow & ice storms often shut down highways disrupting delivery schedules. Due to the number of companies hauling our products, logistics specialists have their hands full in keeping your delivery dates on track. Be aware: delays sometimes happen.

• ADDITIONAL DROP FEE S URCHARGE should be expected by accounts in small centres. It is evermore difficult to entice truck companies to haul these loads! All small centre accounts may experience a one dollar surcharge on each tree delivered to continue shipping outside the main traffic lanes.

• FUEL PRICE PHENOMENON of is always present due to disruptions caused by natural disasters affecting supply & production such as hurricanes. Additionally we have global politics and embargos, currency fluctuations and certainly the annual long weekends and the Christmas Rush causes prices to rise. Just this past September 2017 the pump price surged twenty cents only to come back down again. One can’t predict this and prompts me to surmise that

CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHRISTMAS TREES NINE easy steps to care for your natural tree will ensure its freshness 1 – FRESH CUT To guarantee your tree drinks, make a fresh 1/2 inch (1 cm) cut on the tree stump before placing in water. The cut is made to allow a fresh exposure of the cambium layer (green film under the bark) responsible for water up-take and ultimately re-hydration. 2 – STAND WITH ADEQUATE WATER CAPACITY Keep the tree watered! Place tree in a stand capable of holding at least one day’s worth of water, two days is better (1-6 quarts or litres). A premium 6-8 ft/2 m tree can draw up to 4 quarts/4 litres of water per day for the first 10 days until it begins to taper off. 3 – HOT TAP WATER After the tree is thawed, fill your stand with hot tap water the first time enabling the sap to re-hydrate and flow readily. This water will be drawn upwards replenishing the moisture to the extremities. If your tree ever runs out of water during the display season, suction ceases and the tree loses its ability to resume water uptake (similar to siphoning water out of an aquarium, if the line ever sees air, water uptake stops) and the tree begins to dry out prematurely. Using additives is unnecessary!!! 4 – REMOVAL OF WRAPPING To prevent breakage of fine branches and needles, allow tree to thaw for up to five hours prior to removal of wrapping. Enjoy its natural beauty and then decorate to your hearts content. 5 – LIGHTS & HEAT SOURCES Prevent all heat sources from blowing on your tree. Use deflectors when appropriate. Do not overload your tree with high wattage lights and turn these off while away from your home or when retiring for the night. 6 – TRANSPORTING Move your tree in/out of your home/vehicle with minimal needle drop by placing a moving bag or old sheet over the tree (and stand). Dispose of the used tree bag separately. 7 – CLEANING Clean tree sap from hands and tree stand with a citrus based hand-cleaner such as “Fast Orange” and “GOJO” or ammonia. 8 – RECYCLE Contact your local Parks & Recreation department to discover where your tree may be chipped for reuse as mulch for new and old tree installations, walkways, and flower beds or simply as compost to be utilized as future soil. 9 – ENDEARING MEMORIES—KEEP THE TREE TAG As you decorate your tree with decorations and ornaments from our parents and kids alike, enjoy this reflection on days gone by. More fun is on the way by having a contest! Mark the year on the back of the tree tag and document how much water your tree drinks when re-filling your stand. Turn this into a family challenge to discover who is closest come Christmas and again on New Year’s day. Store this memorable keepsake with your decorations when dismantling the tree :) On behalf of the Gaudets and our dedicated Staff, we wish you a safe and Merry Christmas.

• CHRISTMAS TREE DROP FEES - Commercial carriers levy additional charges to the standard mileage rates if several stops are made along the way. Please be aware that we are advocates of preserving the integrity of smaller centers and will do what we can to deliver to your location. If you are on a trucking route outside of standard shipping lanes, we may, either request you pick up at the nearest drop to you (a gratuity for this service would be appreciated by the people handling your drop & reload) or will pass on the extra drop fee and possible extra mileage rate if you are off the beaten track. All accounts will now be levied a minimum $80.00 drop fee. This fee may seem steep but is now in place for all accounts so that transportation firms will continue to want to haul this nature of work. If we are charged more than you will be notified as soon as we know that the fee has or will go up to a maximum of $90.00 for the drop. The mile rate would be a standard fee per km or mile.

• Freight can be arranged by the purchaser or the company. All efforts will be made to find the most reasonable shipping rates.

• Commercial carriers are not responsible for unloading your product. The customer or their representative must be on site when delivery is made. The buyer agrees to file claims against carrier for any plant materials damaged in transit. Count is considered final when our SHIPPING LIST is signed and dated. All shipments are considered final unless notified in writing within 72 hours (we may request colour photographs and samples if issues arise).
