The T-Birds T-ball program is a blast for the whole family. Kids learn the basics of batting (off a tee) fielding, throwing and catching. Guided by adult coaches, students work with LEGO elements and moving parts to build ideas and concepts. Working in teams of 2-6 children, teams work to complete the real world challenges and showcase their project on the final day of the program. All the teams are celebrated and leave with an award. This year’s challenge is Mission Moon where teams will learn to thrive in a new environment and explore all that is around them.

Instructor: Progress with Chess Grades: K – 5

Fantastic Foundation includes students who already know the basic rules but have little or no tournament experience. Students will learn tactics, strategies and checkmate patterns, how to record moves and use a chess clock. Classmates will play training games under tournament conditions and receive the necessary skills to enter competitive play with confidence.

Championship Challenge

Instructor: Progress with Chess Grades: K – 12

Designed for students that have tournament experience or have received prior chess instruction and are eager to enter competition. Sessions will include one hour of interactive lessons and one tournament game. Explore advanced tactics, strategies, checkmate patterns, endgames and openings in a supportive small group setting. Participants will learn from analyzing their games and those of famous masters. Two four-game tournaments. Free entry included with registration.

For students who are currently competing in USA Fencing Tournaments and have at least 2 years’ experience. Games will be used as well as drilling but much of the class will be themed bouts. Tournaments will be fought every two weeks. There will also be visits to other fencing clubs in northeast Ohio. Individual lessons will be given when possible and coaches and fencers will be brought in from different clubs for special presentations. Fencing will be done with electric weapons every week. This will be a fun class and memories will be made, but this is preparing for local, state and national competitions. Equipment fee of $25 payable by check to instructor first night of class.

• Special requests for team placement can be honored on a reciprocal basis for Midget and Junior only. One request per player.

TJ Tabor picked up a club at age seven. He played for the Solon high school golf team lettering 4 years. In college he played for the University of Mount Union where his team made it to states two years in a row. TJ graduated with a degree in sports management and is currently the golf coach for the Kenston high school golf team. TJ is also available for both adult and junior private lessons.

Students, stop worrying about WHEN you’re ever going to find the time to do your applications. Our three day boot camp will help organize your time. We will work through different components of the Common Application including the personal/demographic information, the activities section, and we’ll complete a brainstorming session focused on the personal statement. We will also complete select sections of the Naviance – the brag sheet and resume, so that when you return to school in the fall you will have a majority of the work done and your teachers can begin working on their letters of recommendations. These strategies will pave the way for a much more enjoyable senior year with less stress. By using this third party approach, you will have the bulk of your work completed before the summer even begins!

Adventures in Astronomy

Join us as we head to Geauga Metroparks Observatory Park in Montville Township, known for its lack of light pollution. Naturalist, Chris Mentrek, will lead a special presentation- before we head out to view the stars and planets form the park’s observatory. If it is cloudy we will view a planetarium presentation. Meet at 5:30 p.m. for pizza in the Pepper Pike Learning Center. Board school transportation in the PPLC lot at 6:00 p.m. This trip fills quickly so register early. Registration deadline is September 18.

Bridge Competitive Bidding

Instructor: Davis Bonner, Certified Bridge Teacher

Davis Bonner, a Sapphire Life Master accredited by the American Contract Bridge League as a Certified Bridge Teacher will be teaching a class that will cover how to bid when you want to take a contract away from your opponents and how to bid when your opponents want to take a contract from you. This class is good for intermediate students with playing experience who are comfortable with basic bidding and play but want to learn techniques for bidding in contested auctions.

Join us for this energetic, fast paced stimulating hour designed to get you up and moving while having fun. Beachwood residents and community groups are able to rent Beachwood Community Center rooms for meetings and functions. Each of the center's six rooms may be rented individually or combined to form a larger room. Rooms may be combined to comfortably seat 144 for dinner and up to 250 chairs-only for a lecture.

Prices from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on weekdays range from $30 an hour to $100 an hour depending on size of room. Additional fees may be assessed for limited kitchen facilities, necessar y police or parking staff and clean-up. All fees including a security deposit of $200 are due at the time of reser vation. Additional rules and regulations may apply, appointment necessary for viewing, call 216-292-1970.

General refund PolicyBecause the decision to maintain classes is based on the enrollment at the first class, no refunds are guaranteed after the first session. Participants assume the risk of changes in personal affairs or health. There is no refund for materials purchased. The Recreation Department reserves the right to terminate a class with fewer than the required number of registrants. Programs are subject to change of location and/or personnel. If a program or class is cancelled by our office due to insufficient enrollment participants will receive a full refund. All other refund requests will be subject to a 5% Finance Department processing fee, no less than $5 and no more than $25, with the exception of City Day Camp fees.

reGiStration deadlineDeadlines are used as a tool to determine whether there is enough interest in a class/activity to invest time and money. If a class minimum isn’t met by the deadline date, the activity may be cancelled. Does missing the deadline mean I can’t get into the class? In some cases, except sports leagues and camps, participants may still be able to register for an activity until the class is filled. But early registration guarantees you and your family members a spot in your favorite activities.

inclement weather cancellationSWhen the Beachwood City Schools are not in session or are dismissed early due to inclement weather, all daytime, afternoon and/or evening Recreation classes will not be held, regardless of weather changes. Classes missed due to bad weather or other ‘acts of God’ will be added on to the end of the session whenever possible. Beachwood Recreation however reserves the right to terminate any class with fewer than the scheduled number of sessions, without issuing a refund or a credit. Programs held in other districts (i.e. South Euclid-Lyndhurst) follow their respective building and/or school closing schedules. Feel free to call the Recreation Department weekdays between 8:00 – 4:30 p.m. for class cancellation information at 216.292.1970.
