LION ROARS AT SANDOWNThe Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes may have been denied one of its star players with the withdrawal of Gr.1 Derby winner Masar on Friday afternoon, but the contest still served up a race for the ages with the Gr.2 Dante Stakes victor Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) defeating Gr.1 2,000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) by a neck after a battle royal in the final furlong.

Roaring Lion had to survive a stewards’ enquiry before being confirmed the winner after he and Saxon Warrior came together and appeared to bump inside the final furlong.

The pair have now met four times and the score stands at two all, Saxon Warrior having had Roaring Lion in arrears when landing both the Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy and the 2,000 Guineas, while Roaring Lion finished a place ahead of his rival when third in the Gr.1 Derby prior to yesterday’s victory at Sandown.

The field of seven in yesterday’s 1m2f contest was taken along by the 2016 Eclipse victor Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy), with Roaring Lion settled behind the pace in fifth place, slipping to the rear of the field with half a mile to run. Saxon Warror, who was backing up from his third place in last Saturday’s Gr.1 Irish Derby, was one of the first to make his move, with Donnacha O’Brien throwing down the gauntlet two furlongs from home as Oisin Murphy set Roaring Lion down for his run on the outside. Inside the final

furlong, the pair duelled to the line, with Roaring Lion edging slightly right into his rival. Cliffs Of Moher (Galileo), who was not afforded a clear run, represented the older generation by claiming third place, two and a half lengths behind his stablemate.

The victory marked a third Eclipse success for trainer John Gosden. Speaking after the race, Gosden, who previously won the race with Golden Horn (2015) and Nathaniel (2012), commented: “He’s run a great race. We were forced three wide round the bend and were shuffled back wider than we wanted, but having got through all of that I thought he timed it beautifully and he had the race won through the last furlong.”

Age has given Judicial plenty of experience and he was walked to the start early. During the race, he tracked the pace-settng Mirza under Paul Mulrennan, before making his move a furlong out. Muthmir closed fast and late but Judicial was able to hold on by a neck, with Mirza a length and a quarter back in third place. The Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes was mentioned by connections as a target for the winner.

Bred and owned by the Elite Racing Club, Judicial arrived at the 5f contest on the back of a confidence-boosting victory at Beverley in conditions company, having finished second by just a neck to Mabs Cross (Dutch Art) in the Gr.3 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket in April. Although Judicial had won ten times prior to yesterday’s success, all over the minimum trip, this marked his first Pattern race success.

Although he is the first foal out of his Listed-winning dam, his year-younger half-sister, the dual Gr.1 winner Marsha (Acclamation), has also advertised the talents of the family, which is that of the outstanding miler Soviet Song (Marju).

TANK JUST AWESOME IN DISTAFFAwesometank lived up to her name in the Listed Distaff Stakes at Sandown yesterday, making all to win the 1m contest.

Trained by William Haggas, the daughter of Intense Focus was smartly out of the stalls under James Doyle and showed grit when

Vionnet, a half-sister to the US Gr.2 winners Moulin de Mougin (Curlin) and Schiaparelli (Ghostzapper), out of a Gr.3-winning full-sister to the multiple Gr.3 winner California Flag (Avenue Of Flags).

Vionnet, who sadly died earlier this year after foaling, has also produced the two-year-old Fran The Man (Medaglia D’Oro)

HORSEPLAY LANDS FIRST GROUP SUCCESSHorseplay (Cape Cross) scored the biggest victory of her career when narrowly landing the Gr.2 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock yesterday.

The four-year-old, homebred by Philip Freedman’s Cliveden Stud and trained by Andrew Balding, has been keeping illustrious company in her career to date, but her biggest success prior to yesterday came in the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes last season, before she went on to finish fourth in the Gr.1 Oaks.

Having dropped back to 1m2f in May to finish runner-up to Coronet (Dubawi) in the Gr.2 Middleton Stakes, Horseplay looked to relish yesterday’s step back up to 1m4f. Settled in third behind the front-running God Given (Nathaniel), she tracked the leaders into the home straight on the rail under David Probert. As the field moved to the centre of the track, Horseplay began her challenge, chasing hard to catch God Given as Mrs Sippy (Blame), Precious Ramotswe (Nathaniel) and Flattering (Galileo) all made their plays. Horseplay showed all her talent and courage to overhaul God Given in the shadow of the post, with a photo finish called to split the first two home, separated by a short head. Precious Ramotswe took third, a further length and three quarters away.

Horseplay is a half-sister to three winners, most notably the Listed Hoppings Stakes heroine More Mischief (Azamour), and is out of the Listed River Eden Stakes winner Mischief Making (Lemon Drop Kid), a daughter of the Gr.1 E P Taylor Stakes heroine Fraulein (Acatenango).

FAIR GR.3 VICTORY FOR JUDICIALIn a race where half the field of ten were three-year-olds, it was left to the veteran contingent to fight out the finish of the Gr.3 Sprint Stakes at Sandown, as the six-year-old Judicial (Iffraaj) defeated eight-year-old Muthmir (Invincible Spirit) and 11-year-old Mirza (Oasis Dream).

challenged two furlongs from home, quickening up again to repel all comers and win by three quarters of a length. Preening (Dutch Art) and Desert Diamond (Dubawi) both came to challenge, while Di Fede (Shamardal) made up a lot of ground on the wide outside, but Awesometank was always in command. Desert Diamond took second, with Preening a further length and a half way in third.

Bred by Eminent Kind, Awesometank was a 25,000gns purchase from the Tattersalls December Foal Sale. She is a half-sister to the winner Modern Approach (New Approach), out of the winning Lawman mare Janey Muddles, a half-sister to the four-time winner My Single Malt (Danehill Dancer), out of a half-sister to the recent Gr.2 Curragh Cup victor Flag Of Honour (Galileo), Gr.3 winner and sire Air Chief Marshall (Danehill Dancer), dual Listed winner and sire Misu Bond (Danehill Dancer) and Foxtrot Romeo (Danehill Dancer), runner-up in the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas.

NEARLY CAUGHT AT THE DOUBLENearly Caught (New Approach) recorded his second consecutive victory in the Listed Esher Stakes at Sandown, winning by a length and a quarter from Platitude (Dansili) to register his fourth Stakes success. Hughie Morrison’s eight-year-old gelding had finished second in the Gr.2 Oleander-Rennen in May over today’s trip at Hoppegarten but could manage only ninth in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot on his most recent start.

In yesterday’s two-mile race, Nearly Caught was settled behind the front-running Jukebox Jive (Jukebox Jury) before making his move three furlongs out, taking the lead inside the final furlong and drawing away to win well, with Jukebox Jive finishing a length and three quarters behind the runner-up.

Bred by The Irish National Stud and a graduate of both Goffs and Tattersalls, Nearly Caught is a half-brother to the Gr.2 Lonsdale Cup heroine Pale Mimosa (Singspiel), who was Gr.1-placed in the Prix du Cadran, and Suailce (Singspiel), Listed-placed over 1m4f. They are out of Katch Me Katie (Danehill), a winning half-sister to Kool Kat Katie (Fairy King), a Gr.2 winner in Canada and Gr.1-placed in the US, and Kalypso Katie (Fairy King), a Gr.3 winner over an extended 1m2f.

GERMANY

CHAPARRAL’S TARAJA WINS MEHL MULHENS TROPHYTaraja (High Chaparral) asserted close home in a thrilling finish to the Gr.3 Mehl Mulhens Trophy at Hamburg yesterday.

Bred and owned by Gestut Hachtsee, the filly tracked the leader Night Of England (Lord Of England) throughout the 2200m contest. In the home straight, Night Of England looked to have stolen a march on the field, but as Bauyrzhan Murzabayev got to work on Taraja, the filly responded gallantly and fought back. Dina (Nathaniel), who had been at the rear of the field for most of the race, flew fast and late up the centre of the track as the front three battled it out, with Taraja getting up to win by half a length. She was flanked on either side by Dina and Night Of England, who dead-heated for second.

Taraja, who finished second in the Gr.2 Diana Trial last time out, is a full-sister to Tai Chi, a Gr.3 winner at two and now at stud in Germany, and a half-sister to the Listed-placed Takenja (Dubawi), out of the Listed-placed Big Shuffle mare Taita.

Duchess of Norfolk, the Duke one of the most powerful and controversial members of the Jockey Club and Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot, the Duchess a very keen punter. He was to win the Gr.1 Gold Cup for them in 1974 with the homebred Ragstone (Ragusa) the year before the Duke died, a great satisfaction to all. In the same year as his move he married Sue, to make a formidable team, including if one chose to smoke cigarettes at the same rate as they did for many years.

It was not that long before Dunlop scored the first of 74 Gr.1 wins in the Irish 1,000 Guineas with Black Satin (Linacre), who was also second in the Gr.2 (then) Coronation Stakes and third in both the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas and Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes. He won the big race of yesterday, the Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes, in 1973 with Scottish Rifle (Sunny Way), also second in the Gr.1 Irish Derby and what is now the Gr.1 International Stakes, and, in an early example of the trainer’s pioneering willingness to travel, he was also third in the Gr.1 Washington International.

One demonstration of him travelling horses before it became commonplace came with North Stoke (Northfields), who rose from a handicapper to win six races on the bounce that included what is now the Gr.1 Irish Champion Stakes and Group races in Belgium and Germany.

It was perhaps surprising he scored his first British Classic win as late as 1978, when Shirley Heights (Mill Reef) got up to deny Hawaiian Sound (Hawaii) in the Gr.1 Derby, a race he was to take again with Erhaab (Chief’s Crown) from impossibly far back in 1994, as well as gaining places with such as Silver Patriarch (Saddlers’ Hall), who won him the Gr.1 St Leger in 1997 and Gr.1 Coronation Cup, and his last really good horse, Sakhee, by Bahri, whom he had trained to take the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes and, in that memorable ride from Willie Carson, the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, major factors in the trainer’s title in 1995.

Other Classic winners followed, with Quick As Lightning (Buckpasser) winning the 1,000 Guineas in 1980 and Circus Plume (High Top) the Gr.1 Oaks in 1984. Perhaps the most remarkable of his subsequent Classic winners, however, was Salsabil (Sadler’s Wells), who completed the 1,000 Guineas and Oaks double and then beat the colts in the Irish Derby. That win, and the victory of Shadayid (Shadeed) in the following year’s 1,000 Guineas (as well as the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac at two), was for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, his most loyal patron for many years, and a win for his brother Sheikh Mohammed was pretty significant to the racing world, as that of Hatta (Realm), who subsequently took the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes, at lowly Brighton was the magnate’s first.

FRANCE

STUNNING LISTED VICTORY FOR STRAWBRIDGEStunning Spirit (Invincible Spirit) recorded her first Listed success yesterday when winning the Grand Prix Anjou Bretagne at Nantes. George Strawbridge’s homebred filly was second to the subsequent dual French Classic victor Brametot (Rajsaman) in the Gr.3 Prix de Fontainebleau in April last year and was Gr.3-placed twice more last season.

Settled in mid-divsion in yesterday’s contest, she made her move on the wide outside, moving up into second on the home turn and, responding well to Aurelien Lemaitre, hit the front in the final 200m and asserted readily from Oriental, (Smart Strike) winning by two lengths. Tulipa Rosa (Excelebration) took third, three quarters of a length behind the runner-up.

The winner is the first foal out of her winning dam, who is a full-sister to the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile heroine Rainbow View, who also landed the Gr.1 Matron Stakes and went on to win a Gr.3 in the US, and is a half-sister to the US Gr.2 winner Utley (Smart Strike), the US Gr.3 heroine Winter View (Thunder Gulch) and Just As Well (A P Indy), runner-up in three Gr.1 contests on turf in the US. Her dam, No Matter What (Nureyev), is a half-sister to high-class performer E Dubai (Mr Prospector), from the family of the Gr.1 winner and sire Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality).

OBITUARYBRITAIN

JOHN DUNLOPOne of the finest trainers of his generation, John Dunlop, who deserves to be mentioned alongside the knights Henry Cecil and Michael Stoute, has died at the age of 78, a few days short of his birthday, having not been in great health for some time. The Champion Trainer of 1995 was born at Tetbury, the son of a country doctor who was keen on racing. After National Service in the Royal Ulster Rifles, where his family had its roots, he worked for a couple of years with Neville Dent, who trained successfully and owned the Hart Hill Stud in Dorset, and then Gordon Smyth in 1963 as assistant and secretary, though he was hardly qualified for the latter.

He was only 26 when he was appointed trainer at Castle Stables in Arundel on a salary at the end of 1965 to the Duke and

Millenary (Rainbow Quest) won his tenth and last domestic Classic in the St Leger in 2000, but, although Dunlop recovered from a usually fatal ruptured aorta in 2001, his career went into decline and his last ten years brought no more success in the top grade, with Give Notice (Warning) his last in the Prix du Cadran of 2002. He retired at the end of 2012 in unhappy circumstances, as never in his career was he more than a tenant at Castle Stables at Arundel and the long years in the wilderness took their toll on the business, which led to the most honourable of men having to let down many of his lads, many of them long serving, and suppliers, having sunk pretty much all he had in to the company to try and rescue it, despite it being limited and thus not obliging him to do so. Over the years, he had long association with his jockeys too, starting with Ron Hutchinson, then Willie Carson, Richard Hills and in later years Ted Durcan, though he never had them appear at the yard.

Tall, distinguished and courteous, it would be unfair to call him patrician, as he was friendlier than that, but he certainly had the air of authority, never seemed to raise his voice and, blessed with a fine wit and sense of irony, was always interesting to talk to (including about paintings), with a propensity to surprise. When asked about Wassl (Mill Reef), who won the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas – the English equivalent was the only domestic Classic to elude him in his total of 10 – and dead-heated in the Gr.2 (then) Lockinge Stakes at four, he said: “Really, he was a two-year-old that did not train on as I thought he might. He was never as brilliant as when he won the Hyperion at Ascot.”

Far more than a trainer, he was active in racing related charities, notably as a trustee of the Racing Welfare, the Moorcroft Centre and the British Racing School, as well as raising more than £250,000 for local charities at his open days. He was also involved with Goodwood racecourse for a number of years. He was highly competitive, but a great giver too, not always two qualities that go together. He was appointed OBE in 1996.

He and Sue had three sons, but tragedy struck in 1997 when their eldest Tim, who had just gone to Chantilly as a pupil, was killed in a car crash, which affected them both very deeply. They had pride, however, that both Ed and Harry have carved out successful careers as trainers.

Dunlop was equally proficient in handling sprinters, notably the exceptional Champion Habibti (Habitat), who won three Gr.1 and three more now of that grade, and he had good two-year-olds, such as Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes victor Mujahid (Danzig). As a fearless traveller with horses, he actually handled one who came the other way, Balmerino (Trictrac), who came from New Zealand and finished second under Dunlop’s care in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Rarely for a trainer of Classic winners, Dunlop, who trained over 3,500 winners in all, realised the value of a win for a filly and he was as cunning a handler as one could meet. He was a not-infrequent subject of an H19 enquiry, where a horse that has not been placed wins and is reviewed by the stewards, often with a filly in her first handicap. On one occasion at Kempton Park, he duly appeared after the vital bracket had been gained and, in his most insouciant style, offered: “I think she ran far better when she was beaten on her last start than when she won here today.” What could one say to that, coming from such a master?

Dunlop loved stock and showing it, particularly cattle and heavyweight hunters. He kept a few prize beasts and was once asked by an Antipodean rancher how many cattle he had. He replied five, at which came the whistled rejoinder, “That many!”, as he dealt in thousands. Like many a good stockman, he knew all the pedigrees and details of his charges, even when he became the first British trainer to have 200 horses on his books.

As expected, the winner of South Africa’s premier race came from the powerful stable of Justin Snaith, whose five runners where headed by the favourite African Night Sky. However, it was the lesser fancied three-year-old Do It Again who took top honours in a slowly-run race.

Such was the lack of pace that African Night Sky moved to the head of affairs in the back straight and, when the race turned into a sprint for home, he was unable to quicken in the straight. Anton Marcus had no such problems on Do It Again and he powered into the lead a furlong from home. The strapping bay ran on strongly to score from stable companion Made To Conquer (Dynasty), while Elusive Silva (Silvano) rounded out a remarkable clean sweep for the Snaith stable.

Runner-up in the Gr.1 Cape Derby, the winner had landed the Gr.2 Daisy Guineas in his penultimate start and entered the July off a creditable fourth in the Gr.1 Daily News 2000. He is Snaith’s third July winner following Dancer’s Daughter (2008) and Legislate (2014).

Do It Again joins last season’s Gold Medallion winner Sand And Sea as the second Gr.1 winner to emerge from the first crop of Klawervlei-based Twice Over. A Juddmonte homebred, he twice carried Khaled Abdullah’s silks to victory in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes.

Bred by Robin Bruss’s Northfields Stud, Do It Again is the third Stakes winner out of the accomplished Sweet Virginia (Casey Tibbs), who defeated male rivals in both the Gr.3 Winter Derby and Gr.3 Winter Classic. In addition to the July winner, she is the dam of Sophomore Sprint hero Strongman (Stronghold) and Gr.3 Winter Guineas third Vilakazi (Visionaire), both of whom were exported to the Far East, as was her Kahal colt Mighty Emperor. Strongman won Hong Kong’s Gr.3 Ladies Purse under the name Horse Of Fortune, while Mighty Emperor has scored five times in Singapore. The grandam Millie Bovana (Royal Prerogative) is a full-sister to Mill Hill, winner of the Lancome Fillies and Germiston November Handicap. She produced dual Gr.3 winner Bushra (Badger Land), who in turn is the dam of Gr.3 East Cape Derby hero True Master (Jet Master) and dual Stakes winner Beataboutthebush (Gimmethegreenlight).

Liberatrix (Iffraaj) made a winning debut here, staying on well despite a slow start. She is a half-sister to a pair of middle-distance winners, Ad Libitum (Elusive Quality) and Elusive Cowboy (Elusive Quality). Their dam Sarmad (Dynaformer) was unplaced in four starts and is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Anglesey Stakes victor Woodborough (Woodman), also Gr.1-placed three times and later a decent sire in South Africa, Performing Magic (Gone West), winner of the Gr.2 Illinois Derby in the US, and the Listed Woodcote Stakes victrix Dance Trick (Diesis). They are out of the Listed-placed juvenile Performing Arts (The Minstrel), who was third in the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and is a full-sister to the Gr.1-placed Stakes winner and sussessful sire The Noble Player. The third dam is the triple Group winner Noble Mark (On Your Mark), who produced 11 winners from her 13 foals.

2.00 BEVERLEY, 2YO NOVICE AUCTION, 7½f1. THE TRADER (Ire), 2c,

Mastercraftsman – Chinese White (Dalakhani) O: Ali Saeed, B: Skymarc Farm, T: Mark Johnston €16,000 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale, by Mark Johnston, consigned by Hollyhill Stud Distances: 3l, 2¾l. 7 ran.

Last of four on his debut a week ago, The Trader (Mastercraftsman) showed a marked improvement to make all here. He is the fourth foal out of Chinese White (Dalakhani) and is a half-brother to Chinese Jade (Cape Cross), also known as Best Effort, successful five times from 7f-1m1f in Britain and Hong Kong, and to The Plough (Sea The Stars), successful over jumps in Italy. They are out of Chinese White, who was crowned the Champion Older Mare in Ireland in 2010, having won the Gr.1 Pretty Polly Stakes, and was also successful in the 2009 Gr.2 Blandford Stakes, as well as scoring three Listed victories and a Gr.3. She is a full-sister to the Gr.3-placed Highly Toxic and to three other more minor winners, out of the Gr.3 Blandford Stakes heroine Chiang Mai (Sadler’s Wells), a half-sister to the Gr.1 Prix de Diane heroine Rafha (Kris), dam of the top-class sprinter and sire Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) and leading sire Kodiac, as well as Gr.3 winners Sadian (Shirley Heights) and Acts Of Grace (Bahri).

Chinese White has a yearling colt by Dark Angel.

Also ran: Gimme Six, Roy’s Riviera (Aus), Neptune’s Rain, Premier Dance, Simply Royal, Folk Dance, She’s A Giver, The Secret Is Out, Ngaga (Aus), Final Judgement, Al Danza Non-runners: Sylvan On Fire, Kilauea Distances: shd, 2¼l, shd

Lammerskraal homebred Redberry Lane sprang a huge upset when she lowered the colours of the hot favourite Snowdance (Captain Al), who on paper, looked to have this prestigious Gr.1 event at her mercy. A daughter of Western Winter, Redberry Lane refused to be beaten when Snowdance headed her entering the final furlong and, displaying a wonderfully game attitude, she responded to Lyle Hewitson’s urgings to regain the lead in the shadow of the post for a first Gr.1 success.

This career-best victory came on the back of an overdue and facile first Stakes win in the Listed Syringa Handicap in late May, which broke a string of five successive second places. Already a valuable broodmare prospect, Redberry Lane is the latest Gr.1 winner for Lammerskraal’s late lamented champion Western Winter, the sire of 92 Stakes winners, of which 22 have triumphed at the highest level.

Out of the winning Jallad mare Strawberry Lane, the filly is a full-sister to Gr.1 Cape Guineas hero Solo Traveller and the Gr.2 Fillies Guineas second Strawberry Ice, who produced Gr.2 Gold Bracelet heroine Flying Ice to the cover of Go Deputy. Strawberry Lane is a full-sister to the talented sprinter Jalberry, a Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed when third in the SA Fillies Sprint. She is the dam of last season’s Gr.2 Golden Horseshoe winner Purple Diamond (Var) and the Zimbabwean Stakes winner On This Rock (Trippi). The grandam Taineberry (Centaine) captured the Gr.2 Oaks and is also the grandam of Gr.3 Strelitzia victress Royal Pleasure (Visionaire).

Red Balloons (Kyllachy) was placed on her first two starts before finishing 14th in the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes, albeit less than seven lengths adrift of the winner, and she won cosily here as the odds-on favourite. She is a half-sister to the winners Dutch Archer (Dutch Art) and Revel (Makfi) and is the fourth foal out of the Oasis Dream mare Cecily, who won twice up to six furlongs. She is a daughter of the dual winner Odette (Pursuit Of Love), whose six other winners include the Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes victrix Silca’s Gift (Cadeaux Genereux), Gr.3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes winner Violette (Observatory) and the Listed winner and Gr.3 runner-up Virginia Hall (Medicean). The third dam, On Tiptoes (Shareef Dancer), won the Queen Mary Stakes when it held Gr.3 status and the best of her five successful progeny is the Listed-placed Caballero (Cadeaux Genereux). Further back in the family is the dual Gr.1-winning sprinter and young sire Twilight Son (Kyllachy).
