2018 LA RABIDA ANNUAL REPORT

At La Rabida, Hope Grows Here. This is demonstrated day in and day out through the compassion and dedication of our staff to provide the best care possible for our patientsand their families.

Many premature babies who come to us for care are a testament to that hope. These children come to La Rabida from other hospitals’ neonatal intensive care units—as either inpatients on their way home, or after a hospital discharge to our Premier Kids clinic. When these children come to La Rabida, they have started their very young lives with numerous complications and challenges—some require breathing

assistance or are unable to take nourishment from a bottle; and are also delayed in their development. These very special kids and their

families need support in so many ways. La Rabida provides expert care from a team of specialists including nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, oral-motor feeding specialists, physicians, social workers and infant development specialists to meet each child’s unique needs.

Dear Friends,

Imagine being a parent and getting to see your child’s smile in response to your face for the first time, and getting to hold and play with him or her for the first time they’re off a ventilator— or feeding your child their first bottle after they have been fed through a tube for many months. These milestones can be taken for granted when a child is developing at a typical rate; however, these are the big moments for our kids and families. We are committed to do whatever it takes to help them grow, develop and thrive and be hopeful for tomorrow. We are committed to being there every step of the way from the very beginning. We are here to celebrate achievements, large or small, and support them through every accomplishment along the way. Hope does grow at La Rabida.

Hope also grows in our new rehab kitchen. Through the generosity of the Joy in Childhood Foundation and the Starlight Children’s

Foundation, we have created a space where our kids who are receiving rehabilitation services, have the opportunity to redevelop or learn new skills in an environment that is adapted to meet their unique needs. The kitchen is fully accessible, and

supports children’s therapeutic goals. It promotes independence, skill development, healthy eating and family interaction through a

unique and creative outlet.

And Hope grows at La Rabida when our rehab and child life staff and our wonderful young professionals group, the Corporate Advisory Board, plan a back-to-school dance for our kids and families; kids that don’t have the opportunity to engage in such activities at school because of their challenges. So these themed events like a luau, or super heroes or magic, with a DJ, catered food, photo booth and more, brings a sense of independence, accomplishment and joy to everyone involved.

And Hope grows at La Rabida with our new safe locations program. This program identifies and provides neutral, safe, violence free locations for families and their service providers to meet when home visits are too risky. Through the generous support of a local foundation, this program provides transportation to libraries, community and day care centers and houses of worship, helping our families overcome such significant obstacles.

None of this would be possible without the support of individuals like you. These important and meaningful activities are those that insurance; public or private does not cover yet these are important supports and opportunities that make the difference in the lives of our kids and families. Because of you, Hope can grow for our kids, families and staff every single day!

Thanks for helping us ensure that hope can continue to grow at La Rabida.

Hope grows Here

Health & Healing Grows Here. This year we’ve seen significant growth in programs across the hospital. These advancements are a reflection of the new, innovative strategies used to reach and serve more kids within the community and are largely due to increases in resources thanks to contributions from funders and the generosity of supporters like you! These increases also tell us that the need is there; we’re proud to be trusted health resources to thousands of children and families in Chicago every year. Below are the different areas of the hospital that have seen the most growth.
