Dear Friends
I have been asked to write for this month’s magazine, a
challenge which has made me think and pray a little harder.
As you may know I have recently taken on the role as a Churc
hwarden, which again
was and is another challenge that I hope I can do j
ustice to. Has God made 2018
the year of the Challenge for me or perhaps for all of us?
This year hopefully with a new Rector, and the Pari
sh, it will be the time for us to
introduce LYCIG – Leading our Church into Growth.
The following excerpt I thought was very appropriate
for our Church at the present
time. It is taken from Lifelines, produced by the Diocese of Portsmouth and
credited to Rev. Dr. Ruth Tuschling.
** Worshipping Together – Sunday Church is a priority.
A generation ago it would be taken for granted th
at you went to church
every Sunday, and serious Christians would probably
go twice. Each person’s
circumstances are different, but it is still worth taking
a look at how
important church is to you compared with other things th
at are competing
for the Sunday-‐morning slot. If you absolutely can’t get to your no
rmal
church service, could you go to an eight o’clock
instead, or an evening
service? If your own church doesn’t offer it is there a
nother you could go to?
You may find that your personal prayer life is thin simply because you have
been running on empty and not getting enough church. **
There will be many challenges and changes in the coming months/year for our
church, community and a new Rector and his family, and I hope and pray th
at we in
Bedhampton can all work to bring our churches and families together so we can
look forward to walking with our Lord for a more fulfilling future.
God bless
Ann Partridge

ANNUAL PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETING
Sunday 29th April 11am St Nicholas Church

NEW RECTOR APPOINTED We are delighted to tell you that a new Rector has been appointed for our Parish.
Our Archdeacon, Joanne Grenfell, has issued the following statement...
"The Bishop has appointed the Revd Max Cross, currently assistant curate of St Mary Magdalen Sheet to be the next Rector of St Thomas and St Nicholas Bedhampton. A date for Max’s collation as Rector after Easter will be announced soon."
Max spent twenty years as a self-‐employed IT Project Manager, working for major organisations like the Bank of England, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Virgin Atlantic. He is married to Suzy and they have three adult children. For many years the whole family were members of the Church of the Good Shepherd (CoGS) at Crookhorn, where Max played a major part in their ministry to young people. It was there that he began to sense God’s call to church leadership and in 2014 he was ordained to a curacy in the parish of Sheet (near Petersfield).
Max Cross
is the period of 40 days before Easter. It starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Eve. But if you look in a calendar or diary and count the
days they come to more than 40! This is because you don't count the Sundays in Lent! It is a time to prepare for Easter and to think about their relationship with God. It represents the 40 days when Jesus was tempted by the Devil in the desert. During this time he didn't eat or drink anything. Because of this, some Christians give up some food or 'fast' for Lent. For some people this is giving up all food and just drinking, but for others, they just give up luxury food like chocolate or cream cakes! In Church during Lent, the altar is covered with a purple cloth. Purple is traditionally a royal colour and having a purple cloth on the altar helps people remember that Jesus is king and that he died at Easter. There are no flowers or any other decorations displayed in the church, a pity in some ways just as Spring begins with a burst of colour but this is to help our focus on Jesus Christ. However, Mothering Sunday is always on the middle Sunday of Lent. Historically this was a day when servants and maids could have the day off work and go home and visit their families and especially their mothers.

Moses and climate change When Moses went up the mountain one day to meet with God, the Lord said he had both good news and bad news for him. Moses asked, "What's the good news?"
God replies, "Moses, I shall visit plagues upon the Egyptians. I shall cause their rivers to run red with blood. I shall cause frogs to infest their houses, and lice to infest their bodies. I shall cause flies to swarm upon them. Their cattle shall die; boils will infect both man and beast. I shall cause hail to destroy their crops; and locusts shall devour anything green that is left in their land. Darkness will cover their land for three days and nights. I shall then lead you through the wilderness as a pillar of cloud by day, and pillar of fire by night. I shall split the waters of the sea. I shall feed you with Manna that forms upon the ground until the children of Israel reach the Land flowing with milk and honey."
Moses replied, "That's GREAT, Lord! What could possibly be the bad news?"
"You, Moses, shall write the Environmental Impact Statement."

Help Refugees
Mission Statement: We will remain flexible and fast in our response to the genuine needs of refugees, filling gaps and acting where big NGOs
and governments don’t. Help Refugees is the leading UK NGO (Non-‐Governmental Organisation) in a new movement of humanitarian aid, expanding and directly responding to the ever-‐changing needs of the refugee crisis. Unrestricted by red tape they get aid to those who need it most – for those displaced in Europe and beyond.
Their aim is to identify the most effective civil society groups and independent volunteers already working on the ground in crucial points along migration routes. They then provide these groups with any help they may need and are currently funding more than 80 projects across Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Lebanon and Syria. More than 96% of their funds go straight to the field. With no bureaucracy and minimal
overheads, every £1 raised can be traced to its tangible impact on the ground. Whether it is through emergency aid or sustainable housing projects, Help Refugees will continue to empower local communities and help refugees to rebuild their lives.

‘In Flanders Fields the poppies blow’
Part 1 begins a new monthly series on the men of Bedhampton who lost their lives in World War 2 and whose names appear on the War Memorial in St. Thomas’ or in the graveyard.
Harry Frank Huggett (1921-‐1940)
Private 5184808 – Essex Regiment
Harry was born in 1921 in Dorking, Surrey to Harry and Florence Lizzie Huggett. He was a member of the 1/4th Batt. (TA) Essex Regiment, (service No: 5184808) and with his Battalion was engaged in one of the toughest battles of the Second World War. He was part of the third allied assault on the monastery at Monte Cassino, Italy launched on the 15th March 1944. The following is a contemporary account from Ron Goldstein who was present at Monte Casino and came from the same Regiment:-‐ ‘March: By early March we had arrived at Monte Cassino. Like most of our moves, we travelled after dark and so we did not get our first sight of the Monastery until the next morning. Our camp was just below the ridge of a small hill that faced the Monastery so that if you wanted to see what was going on you had to first walk up the hill and then peer over the crest. In front of us was the Liri valley, then the Monastery Hill with the actual Monastery right on the crest itself. It was very menacing, right from the word go, and it was fairly obvious that every move that was made below could be seen, plotted and shelled with relative impunity’. Despite intensive allied bombing which reduced the famous Benedictine monastery to rubble and repeated infantry assaults, the German forces were able to hold off the assault. The third battle ended with heavy casualties on both sides and the Germans still in control of the rubble strewn summit. Harry was killed in the assault on the 17th March 1944 aged 22 and was buried in the Cassino War Cemetery alongside many of his friends and colleagues. A fourth and last massive assault began on the 11th May 1944 and ended 7 days later with the Germans withdrawing to a new defensive line. A shattered group of Polish soldiers hoisted the Polish flag on the 18th May. The Battle of Monte Cassino was finally over. It was reckoned that the allies suffered over 55,000 casualties and their opponents, 20,000. In 1959 his father Harry Huggett was living at 10, Elmhurst Terrace, Lower Road, Bedhampton.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JEAN HILDERSLEY Special birthday celebration
Jean Hildersley, a member of the church for many years, celebrated her 90th birthday with a special lunch. As well as many members of her family, also present were members of a local bird watching group and friends from the church congregation.

FAMILY NEWS
Among those celebrating birthdays this month are Sally Tritton and Olwyn Hine. We send best wishes to them both and to anyone else who has a birthday. Congratulations to Allan and Jan Way who are celebrating their Golden Wedding
this month. They were married at St Thomas in 1968 and will be marking the occasion with a service in church.
A Special Birthday Celebration On Saturday 28th January, the day before her 90th birthday, Jean Hildersley celebrated in style with family, and friends from all walks of life. Jean belongs to a walking group, a church Home Group and many other groups, I suspect too numerous to mention; perhaps that is why she keeps so young! It was from these groups that friends joined Jean and her family at St John's Church Hall, Rowlands Castle for her "birthday bash". The cake that took centre stage with a candle for each decade was made, of course, by the famous cake lady, Janice Stott! It was lovely to meet Jean’s family, whom we have heard very much about and it was nice to put the faces to the names. Jean did not want any gifts but donations were gratefully accepted on behalf of the Rowans Hospice. At the 8.00 service on the Sunday, although Jean was not in Church, recovering with her family after a long day and night, Clive Williams, who was preaching that morning, announced it and wished her a very happy birthday. Here's to another decade Jean!!

1st Bedhampton Scout Group The Beavers and Cubs have been doing Archery in the district hut, where “Beatrice the Balloon”, “Bob the Balloon”, “Barny the Balloon” and “Boris the Balloon” all had Explosive but sadly short lives.
The Cubs also went down to the railway station to practise railway safety and understand how to cross the crossing safely. In fact, they actually practised waiting patiently whilst SEVEN trains passed. A record I think.
Earlier in the month (January) two of the Scouts/Explorers performed in a local pantomime in front of a number of other Scouts and Explorers who went to support (and, being a pantomime, boo in the appropriate places!)
HELP NEEDED Sadly we are struggling at the moment with Leadership in the Scout and Explorer section. This means that we can’t do everything we want to and the Explorer section often has to “join in” with Scout activities. Ideally we would like to get to the stage where we have one set of Leaders for Scouts and one for Explorers (working together).
If anyone knows anyone who can help, please get in touch. It doesn’t need to be every week and no previous Scouting experience is needed.
To end on a positive note, one of our Scouts/Explorers has achieved being selected as a representative at the world Scout Jamboree. Another has been selected for an international trip to Uganda. We wish them all the best and will be helping them fundraise for these trips of a lifetime.

Wordsearch Jesus at the gates of Jerusalem
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, when the Church remembers how Jesus arrived at the gates of Jerusalem just a few days before the Passover was due to be held. He was the Messiah come to His own people in their capital city, and yet He came in humility, riding on a young donkey, not in triumph, riding on a war-‐horse. As Jesus entered the city, the crowds gave Him a rapturous welcome, throwing palm fronds into His path. They knew His reputation as a healer, and welcomed Him. But sadly, the welcome was short-‐lived and shallow, for Jerusalem would soon reject her Messiah, and put Him to death.

Thousands raised for worthy causes The January meeting was our AGM. There were fifteen of us there and, Sheila King, the Deanery representative came to chair the meeting. Christine read the minutes of the January 2017 AGM and these were approved. Sheila presented the annual accounts which were also agreed. The elections of officers followed and Ann was elected as Branch Leader with Christine and Sheila also elected as Secretary and Treasurer. Myrna has resigned from the committee and the remaining members namely Marion, Pat Barratt, Marie and Jacqueline were elected. Sheila King then gave a short talk about the work of the Mothers’ Union World Wide. She presented us with some details of where our subscription monies go. Seventeen thousand pounds have been spent on a Literacy Scheme in Africa to teach ladies to read. As we know, to educate a mother is to educate her children. Some of the areas are in Northern Africa and as we are aware, often these countries do not wish their ladies to be educated in literacy skills. M.U. have also provided showers (outside cubicles with a bucket system) and soap which is a huge benefit. We have also supported the Roberts’ Centre in Portsmouth. We give support to those families who have people in prison and also sit in on meetings when parents meet up with their estranged families. The deanery also bought children’s books to be given out to encourage parents to read to their children. Ann presented flowers to both Sheila King and Myrna thanking Myrna for her time spent on committee. We finished the afternoon with tea and cake and singing to Jean Hildersley who was going to celebrate her 90th Birthday the following Sunday. The meeting finished with the Grace. Our March meeting will be our quiet day on Tuesday 27th March at 2pm at St. Nicholas Church when Rev. Clive Williams will talk about Spring and New Life. All are welcome.
Marion Machell
At our Mothers’ Union Annual Coffee Morning, we presented to the Deanery thirty emergency packs for Queen Alexandra Hospital. These consist of a flannel, bar of soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb and a handy size packet of tissues. They are used by the people who are rushed into hospital and a bag is given to each patient until such time that the relatives or friends can bring their personal items in for them. Also Barbara Vosper had knitted a miscellany of articles, i.e. blankets and matinee jackets etc., for the premature care baby unit, for which they are eternally grateful. Both these projects will be continued this year.
