Dear Friend, It is a tremendous honor for my hometown of Millbury to welcome players, coaches, families and spectators from across the Commonwealth and beyond to the 2018 Massachusetts State Finals. For months, the Millbury Little League (MLL) has been hard at work to ensure that this is the best statewide little league tournament to date. It comes as no surprise that Millbury was selected to host this exciting event. The community possesses deep roots and is home to one of the oldest continuously operating mills in the United States which fabricates the red stitching on Major League baseballs. MLL is also an integral part of the community. For 65 years, MLL has been committed to its mission "to promote, develop, supervise, and voluntarily assist in all lawful ways, the interest of those who will participate in Little League Baseball." The hard work of the entire MLL community has led to this moment. Congratulations to all of the partners who have made this opportunity possible and best of luck to each of the participating teams. Now, let’s play ball!

THE ROAD TO WILLIAMSPORT
Playing in the Little League World Series is a dream for every youngster who puts on a baseball cap and glove, and winning the Massachusetts State Tournament is another step toward that goal.
The four teams playing this weekend at Washington Street Park have already captured District and Sectional crowns, and the state champion will advance to the New England Regional Tournament in Bristol, Conn., to face the champions from Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The regional winner then represents New England in the Little League World Series, scheduled for Aug. 17-27 in South Williamsport, Pa.
Overall, 10 Massachusetts teams have participated in the Little League World Series, most recently Peabody Western in 2009. Other Massachusetts teams to win the New England Regional include Jesse Burkett (Worcester) in 2002, Saugus American in 2003, and Walpole American in 2007.
Overall, 16 teams – eight from the United States and eight International – will compete in this year’s Little League World Series. In addition to New England, the U.S. teams will come from the following regions: Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest, and West. The International field comprises Asia-Pacific/Middle East, Australia, Canada, Caribbean, Europe/Africa, Japan, Latin America, and Mexico.
Thanks, in part, to the support of Little League’s official sponsors, there is no fee of any kind for any team in the Little League Baseball World Series. Little League International pays all of the expenses for all teams, including travel. While at the Series, teams are housed in dormitories on the complex and food is provided – all at no charge.
At the World Series, attendance is normally well over 20,000, with crowds of 30,000 or more for the championship game. A record 469,964 fans attended the 32 games at the 2015 Little League Baseball World Series. Millions more see the games on the ESPN Family of Networks and ABC. There is never any admission charge to attend a Little League Baseball World Series game.
Little League was founded in 1938 by Carl E. Stotz and play began the following season. In 1947, Stotz and the first local Little League Board of Directors brought together all Little League programs (there were just 17) and called it the National Little League Tournament. The champion was the Maynard Midget League of Williamsport, who defeated the Lock Haven All-Stars, 16-7.
Aided by the publicity from that first tournament, a rush of excitement suddenly surrounded Little League, both across the country and even pouring over our national borders. By 1950, the first international Little Leagues had been established at either end of the Panama Canal and in Canada, prompting the National Tournament to be renamed the Little League Baseball World Series. Before the 20th century was complete, the brainchild of Stotz had grown to include nearly 7,500 leagues in more than 100 countries with nearly three million children playing Little League Baseball or Little League Softball.
To serve the public interest, Little League has added several divisions of play through the years. Teenage baseball divisions (Intermediate 50/70, Junior, Senior, and Big League) and Challenger Division for physically and developmentally challenged children have extended the program’s outreach even further. There are now seven Little League World Series tournaments played every year.

Ricci Hall I always felt a calling to be an umpire. It started early; as a middle
school student I looked up to Steve Palermo. He was an American League Umpire from my hometown of Oxford. Being one of the best umpires in the League, Steve was a great person and professional to idolize.
At the age of fourteen I began umpiring in the Oxford Little League. I quickly fell in love with the calling. After a few years,
I was asked to be the league’s Umpire-in-Chief. I soon was immersed and hooked in the wonderful world of Little League
Baseball. As such, I would watch, perennially, the final game of the Little League World Series. Back then, that was the only game televised.
From my earliest memory of that game, I knew I wanted to, someday, umpire in the Little League World Series.
After fourteen years of District and Sectional games, I received my first Little League State Championship assignment in 2003. I also worked the following year in 2004; in that year I was honored to be assigned to the Little League Regional Tournament held in Bristol, Connecticut. It was an amazing experience, and I was fortunate to be assigned to work home plate in the Mid-Atlantic Championship Game, at the time it was the only televised game of the tournament. In 2005 I was assigned to work the Junior League World Series in Taylor Michigan and received the plate assignment for the World Championship Game. It was another amazing and unforgettable experience.
For twelve straight years I applied for the ultimate experience in Williamsport, PA. I was happy with all I had experienced in Little League Baseball, but I dreamed of the day I would get my call to the Big Show. The unforgettable day came a few days before Christmas, 2016. I found a letter from Little League Baseball in an unassuming envelope in my mailbox. I quickly opened it and found a note from Tom Rawlings, Williamsport’s Umpire-in-Chief. He congratulated me on being appointed to the 2017 Little League World Series and outlined the very busy year ahead. It was a wonderful Christmas present for sure.
Of course, I called everyone I knew! News passed quickly and so did the time. Before I knew it I was getting ready to attend the orientation in May. Oxford Little League did a special event during their Opening Day Ceremonies. I was also honored at countless Ball Parks around the state including North Reading where the 2017 State Finals were held.
In the middle of August I found myself on the road to Williamsport to fulfill a life-long dream. It seemed almost surreal. I had spoked to people who had gone before me. They gave me great advice; they also told me to cherish every moment because it would fly by. As with everything else they told me, it was true.
Walking onto the complex and into Lamade Stadium was an inspirational experience. I had been to Williamsport several times before but never with a ticket to such a close-up view. Being on the field and seeing the inner-workings of the Series was truly remarkable. Not long after arriving, I was informed that I would open the tournament as the plate umpire for the very first game. It was a great contest, and the support I received from around the world was tremendous. I got hundreds of texts and even more Facebook messages. It was a humbling experience. I knew the reach of Little League Baseball but I had no idea how many people, even non-baseball fans, watched the Series. People who I knew through other avenues responded with zeal about my time in Williamsport.

The Gerorge Berarbi Tournament is also known as the Massachusetts Little League State Finals. Geroge became involved in Little League as a volunteer umpire in 1952, including various regionals and eventually umpired the Little League World Series. He went on to become District Administrator in 1959 and was appointed State Director of Little League for Massachusetts in 1969, where he oversaw all state tournaments and the operation of the State Little League organization, positions which he held until his passing(2011). He served on the Little League National Board of Directors and hosted the Little League International Congress in Boston in 1992. In 2010, George was honored at the 25th International Congress held in Lexington, Kentucky for his 50 years as a District Administrator one of only 2 individuals in the history of the Little League program to achieve that distinction. He earned numerous other awards, including the Massachusetts Veterans Award in 1974 for his service to youth baseball and the Brad Jernegan Award from the BoSox Club in 1992.
Little League recognized the MA dedication by having George throw out first pitch at US Championship game in Williamsport that same year.
