SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF
Pride in our land and what it can yield. Pride in our position at the heart of a truly world class Irish indigenous industry. Pride in our people and their unique ability to showcase our nation’s affinity with the horse. Ten years after graduating from the 2007 class of our own stud management course it gives me immense pride to return this year as CEO. It is my challenge to build on the remarkable foundations of stability, growth and vision left to us by our outgoing CEO, John Osborne. To him we bestow an immeasurable debt of gratitude. We end one chapter and look forward to writing the next, ever eager to do even better.
This cannot be achieved alone. We are fortunate to draw on the expertise of our committed board and the passion and skill of our team. This was never more in focus than during our latest royal seal of approval as we welcomed HRH The Duchess of Cornwall to the stud in May.
On the track another stellar year for our clients included Ribchester, who marched through the mile division – boarded here on behalf of Jamie Railton. Barney Roy’s Royal Ascot triumph was a further highlight having been sold by the Irish National Stud as a foal on behalf of Sun Stud.
Sons and daughters of our stallions continue to maintain family honour. For our flagbearer, the incomparable Invincible Spirit, a record priced 1.6 million guineas yearling capped another fantastic year in the sales ring. The exciting miler Inns of Court came within a short head of Prix Jacques le Marois glory, Profitable and Signs Of Blessing fought out the
sprinting division and the impressive Invincible Army added yet another Group win to his sire’s long list of talented two-year- olds.
One year earlier the mighty one’s son, National Defense, became a Group 1 wining juvenile. In 2018 he will reside on the same land as his father having been entrusted to stand here by our friends and allies at Sun Stud.
Thanks to longstanding clients Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar another new recruit arrives with no fewer than three Group 1 wins landing the all aged jewel in Ireland’s racing calendar. Irish Champion Stakes winner, Decorated Knight, has proven ability at the highest level and Gleneagles and Giant’s Causeway are there for close company on his page. Did I mention he is by Galileo?
The roster brims with depth. Free Eagle’s first delivery of foals have been, unsurprisingly, sensational individuals and his first yearlings will be ready for take-off next year.
And so indeed will we. With over 120,000 visitors to our stud once again this year, we’re ready for more. Some journeyed through our gates for the first time; countless more have resolved to return. I, myself, know that feeling all too well!
To produce, protect and promote the Irish thoroughbred. That is a mission emanating from a collective pride in the Irish National Stud.

PUBLIC AUCTION BLOODSTOCK VALUES, LIVE FOALS AND STANDING STALLIONS – 2016
THOROUGHBREDS TO POPULATION KEY MEASURES OF RACING – 2016
Source: Deloitte Economic Impact of Irish Breeding and Racing 2017 Report
Ireland is home to the horse. One of the leading bloodstock producers in the world, breeding over 9,000 thoroughbred foals each year and rating second only to the USA in terms of sales at public auctions (€338 million), Ireland punches above it’s weight.
As a nation, we produce the horses and the people to expertly care for them. Across this island nearly 30,000 individuals earn their living working with horses, many in rural areas where agriculture is at the heart. From feedstuffs to farriers and haylage to headcollars, the industry here is synonymous with excellence and inextricably linked to an abundance of high-class winners around the globe.
The very heart of that industry is in Tully at the stud that belongs to Ireland’s people. At no point do those of us here ever forget the importance of that connection. This is a business with nearly five million shareholders, all of whom call Ireland home.
Providing access to top-notch stallions, setting benchmarks for breeding mares and producing the finest youngstock are our number-one priorities. Those core principles allow us to compete with confidence on the world stage. More importantly, they help us to inspire others. For each year, along with a host of dignitaries, we proudly welcome over 120,000 public visitors to the stud, all excited and eager to look under the bonnet of our business.
Our student programme, operating since 1971, is renowned worldwide and has been responsible for educating and enlightening many who have gone on to take senior roles. This is our duty, privilege and pleasure.
The resulting success is yours to share. Come to our farm, bring your friends and experience our hospitality first hand. You’ll be in good company!

GARY SWIFTDIRECTOR OF SALESA ll around us on this exquisite pasture is new life. In 2017 more than 250 foals were born here in Tully and another 50 yearlings were raised and nurtured. Every one of those 300 young thoroughbreds
has the world at his hooves - the cast of tomorrow’s theatre of dreams.
For some, greatness may await, possibly even immortality. They will live the racing journey with us alongside. Our team, fuelled by passion, commitment and a distinct love of horses, is at one with nature in this relaxed and special environment, where hard work comes easy. When charged with minding these future champions, no stone can be left unturned. Every single horse is given every possible chance to flourish and grow, becoming the very best they can be.
That desire to nurture equally underpins our aspiration for the stud’s management students. From all parts of the world they join us each year, 25 new faces with their own familiar dreams. We aspire to make them come true.
There are many of us here, all with vital roles to play. Yet no matter who we are or what we do, we each and every one of us share the same desire - to create tomorrow’s champions.
With over 600 visiting mares, the Kildare and Sun Chariot yards are a hive of activity from dawn to dusk during the breeding season. Assisted by an eager team of students from around the world, this centre of excellence sets the standard.
Boys will be boys of course, and they require a little management from time to time! No better men to keep them in check than ‘Tall Paul’ Croke and ‘Daffer’ Kelly. Their gentle persuasion is the order of the day and by Springtime our freshman sires will be settled, primed and ready for the covering season ahead.

A cceleration and durability are two of the most desirable assets in the thoroughbred and in Decorated Knight, Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar bred a horse who possesses each in great measure. Not only that, the son of Galileo is an immediate member of one of the most influential stallion families of the recent era.
In 2017, Decorated Knight held his own in Group 1 company during a lengthy international campaign. He is gifted with an exceptional turn of foot – which swept him to victory in the Irish Champion Stakes, the Tattersalls Gold Cup and Jebel Hatta – that sits alongside a durability which saw him start the year with a Listed win in February. Few horses
are able to hold their form for nine months straight, let alone at the highest level. Decorated Knight is also supported by one of the most vibrant families in the stud book. He is the first foal out of a full-sister to three-time champion sire Giant’s Causeway, as well as You’resothrilling, the dam of Gleneagles and Happily, and Freud, the sire of 46 stakes winners. In addition, their dam Mariah’s Storm descends directly from Harry Isaac’s wonderful mare Itsabet, also the ancestress of Dansili. It’s a family full of influential stallions and one that provides him with an excellent foundation to succeed.

SONEver since Invincible Spirit first emerged as an outstanding source of precocious performers and Classic horses, the Irish National Stud has set its sights on standing one of his sons. When Invincible Spirit later showed he was becoming a significant sire of sires, through the likes of I Am Invincible, Lawman and Zebedee, it reinforced the operation’s determination to find a successor to its flagship stallion.
But class and pedigree were never going to be compromised for the sake of standing any son of Invincible Spirit, and in National Defense the stud has secured, after a long but worthwhile wait, a potential heir with unimpeachable credentials.
A €280,000 yearling price tag tells the story of National Defense’s good looks, while his wide-margin victory in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere – a race won by two of Europe’s most coveted young sires, Dabirsim and Siyouni, in recent years – proved he had the ability to match.
National Defense has a persuasive pedigree, too, as a half-brother to Listed-placed Cascading out of a Kingmambo half-sister to Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up Anna Salai. This is the family of Sheikh Mohammed’s influential foundation mare Anna Paola, which also counts the exciting young Group 1 sire Helmet among its number.
This is indeed a young horse who looks a worthy crown prince to the king, Invincible Spirit.

T he horses we have helped to produce have gone on to fill us full of pride. So, too, have the people. Over countless years we have left an imprint on Royal Ascot and again that was true in 2017 as two major races were won by past alumni of the Irish National Stud Management Course.
Sam Hoskins (class of 2006) and the slightly more senior Luke Lillingston (class of 1982) teamed up to create the Hot To Trot racing syndicate. The venture helps to make racehorse ownership a shared and thrilling experience, expanding the sport’s reach through the leasing of well-bred fillies to offer the public an affordable racing experience.
This year the Hot To Trot boys and their syndicate friends made a significant breakthrough when the super speedy Heartache captured the Queen Mary Stakes before later following up in the Flying Childers.
Not to be outdone, that dynamic duo from Bansha House Stables, Con Marnane (1981) and daughter Amy (2016), also flew the flag for our graduates. Tipperary’s leading breeze-up consignors become owners when the sales ring price is not right. They ended up delighted that Different League had come up short of expectations when she took the Albany Stakes in the colours of Theresa Marnane.
After two subsequent Group 1 placings, the Marnanes have a Classic candidate to dream about.
Such gratifying results underline our ethos – inspiring the next generation to achieve great things!
INS Graduates, Luke Lillingston and Sam Hoskins receive the trophy on behalf of
the Hot To Trot Syndicate for Heartache’s Queen Mary Stakes (Gr.3) victory
Two generations: Con and Theresa Marnane, celebrate a poignant family victory at Royal Ascot with daughters Amy and Olivia after Different League triumphs in the Albany Stakes (Gr.3)
