From the PrincipalDear Parents,

The 17/18 school year has been a great success! As the school year comes to a close and summer vacation plans and preparations begin, it is important to look back and reflect on the year that we’ve had. Teachers continue to utilize instructional practices that ensure the success of every student. High expectations and standards have created a climate of excellence. Go Team Awesome!

As you already know, the ending of the school year is just as busy as its beginning in July. Students, teachers, and staff are working hard to complete learning activities and projects, meet IEP goals, and finish projects and benchmark/State testing. This is also the time of year that teaching placements for the 2018-2019 school year are tentatively assigned. I am very pleased with the tentative teacher list and feel confident that all of our teachers will provide quality instruction in the classroom.

We strongly believe that classrooms should be balanced, not only with boys and girls, but also with academic abilities. We also respect the fact that parents may have specific requests for a teaching team who they believe may be a good match for their child. Please read carefully as we have made some changes to how team requests will be accepted. Team requests must be written and emailed to Mrs. Valdez at [email protected] or hand delivered between May 1st through May 4th. Note that no request will be accepted after midnight on May 4th. Only written requests submitted during this time frame will be accepted. Twenty(20) requests will be accepted for teaching teams consisting of 4 teachers. For teams that receive more requests then the capped amount (20 requests for four teacher teams), we will randomly select students until the cap is reached. Please know that we work hard to honor requests and most requests are accommodated. Per Governing Board policy, administration makes the final decisions regarding class assignments. Conversations about specific teams at a grade level should be directed to administration. Also, please keep in mind that the teacher list is tentative and not guaranteed. Teachers might move or take other positions prior to the start of school. The tentative teacher list is included in this newsletter. It is important to have a conversation with your child explaining that a team request is not a guarantee. It is a request.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the upcoming dates. WEB Orientation for all incoming 6th graders will be on July 13th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Advisory Teacher lists/Team assignments will be posted outside of the Rincon Vista office at 12:30 on Friday, July 13th. Stop by that afternoon to be notified of your child’s advisory teacher and feel free to drop by classrooms to informally meet your child’s teachers. Teachers will be available until 3:30 p.m. that day. Your child will receive their full schedule on the first day of school. The first day of school is July 16th. All re-enrollment documents for the 2018-2019 school year (emergency cards, updated contact information, etc.) will be online registration only this year. You must have a Parent PowerSchool account to log in. The district technology department will send out an email to parents in June. We are anticipating that the site will be open for online returning student registration on June 15, 2018. This includes our 6th graders who attended a Vail school in 5th grade. If you have questions, please contact our school office.

We have had a very successful year at Rincon Vista Middle School and we could not have had done it without your partnership. Thank you for your continued involvement and support as we finish another successful year!

Sincerely, Cristela Cardenas, Principal

RINCON VISTA MIDDLE SCHOOL 10770 E. Bilby Road ~ Tucson, AZ 85747 520-879-3200 ~ 520-879-3201 fax

March 26, 2018 Dear 8th Grade Students and Parents, Our 8th grade promotion is about two months away! Today, we reviewed expectations and guidelines for this important event with your student. Please take a moment to read this information and contact me if you have any questions. Academics:

● The Vail School District has high expectations for student achievement. These expectations are documented in the attached “Raising Expectations” Policy. Our promotion/retention practices are based upon the Raising Expectations policy.

● Students must have all of their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Quarter remediation hours served in order to participate in any promotion activities. Any hours owed for 4th Quarter due to excessive absences (9+ in a semester), must be completed during summer school in order to be promoted to 9th grade.

● Students must pass all of their 4th Quarter classes to be eligible for promotion activities, including the 8th grade dance. An “F” in any class during 4th quarter will prevent a student from being able to participate in any promotion activities. Students will also be required to attend Summer School in order to promote to high school.

● Please review your child’s grades and attendance on PowerSchool or on their weekly PASS pages to keep informed of his/her academic progress.

Personal Responsibility and Student Conduct Students are expected to be respectful and appropriate towards all other students and adults on campus at all times. As of today, March 26, 2018, -any student receiving an out of school

suspension OR serving 2 days or more of in-school suspension, will be excluded from all

promotion activities.

Promotion Practice RVMS students will rehearse for the promotion ceremony on Wednesday, May 23. Rehearsal begins after the 8th Grade Breakfast and generally lasts for the rest of the day. Students must participate in rehearsal in order to participate in our promotion ceremony.

Page 6: 2018 ROADRUNNER · 2018the MA Y E DITIO N ROADRUNNER Principal, Cristela Cardenas 879-3204 cardenasc@vailschooldistrict.org Assistant Principal, Kim Valdez 879-3212 valdezk@vailschooldistrict.org

8th Grade Dance and Promotion Dress Code These are fun and special celebrations!

● Boys usually wear slacks and dress shirts or collared polos. ● Girls usually wear dresses or dress slacks with blouses. The RVMS Dress Code is still

in effect for the ceremony. ● Students will be standing and walking A LOT — please consider this when choosing

shoes. ● We highly encourage students being modest and comfortable with their dress wear. ● I encourage you to ask if you have questions. We are happy to look at a photo of an

outfit and answer questions before you make a purchase. Feel free to email me at [email protected] or bring your outfit to school for approval.

● Administration has final determination regarding the appropriateness of student

wear and may require a student to find a cover-up or change altogether an outfit

that is not appropriate for this ceremony.

Promotion Ceremony Information: The promotion ceremony begins promptly at 9:30 AM. We are asking families to limit their number of guests to four (4) people per student and will be giving each family four tickets. If you do not need all your tickets, please turn them into the office. Each family will be able to request up to two additional tickets, that will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a waiting list in the front office for families requesting additional tickets. The waiting list is no guarantee of additional tickets. High school students may only attend if accompanied by an adult. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with each of you! ATTENTION 8TH GRADE PARENTS

Dear 8th grade families,

Each year, we honor our promoting 8th grade class with breakfast on the day of promotion rehearsal. It is a fun morning where students sign yearbooks, see a slide show of their years at RVMS, and enjoy time with their teachers and friends. We need your help to make the breakfast a success!

We are looking for volunteers to help set up, prepare food, and donate items for the breakfast.

LAST CHANCE TO PURCHASE A YEARBOOK

FROM THE REGISTRAR

We would like to extend our best wishes to the families of our 8th graders as you begin your exciting high school journey. If your student will not be attending a high school in the Vail School District next year, please contact me so I can assist you in your transition. Before the last day of school, a withdrawal form will need to be signed. For your convenience, I will prepare a copy of the withdrawal form, final grades, etc. for you to take to your new school to assist in the registration process.

If you will be moving to a new neighborhood in the Rincon Vista Middle School boundaries, please complete a change of address form so we can update the information in Powerschool. Please be aware that when a change of address is done, the Vail School District Policy requires two proofs of residency (eg., AZ drivers license with new address and utility bill with new address). Please see me for a complete list of acceptable Proofs of Residency. If you will be moving to another Vail school or out of district, please contact me to withdraw your student prior to the last day of school.

Thank you for your assistance to ensure a smooth transition for your child’s next school year. If you have any questions, please give me a call.

Important Roadrunner Information

Page 9: 2018 ROADRUNNER · 2018the MA Y E DITIO N ROADRUNNER Principal, Cristela Cardenas 879-3204 cardenasc@vailschooldistrict.org Assistant Principal, Kim Valdez 879-3212 valdezk@vailschooldistrict.org

Important Roadrunner InformationFROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

Attention parents/guardians:

If your student(s) have medication in the health office, it MUST be picked up NO LATER than Thursday, May 24th by 3:30 P.M. The health office does not hold medications over the summer. This includes inhalers, EpiPens, prescription and all OTC medications. If medication is not picked up by this date, it will be destroyed. A letter will be mailed out the first week of May as a reminder.

If your student will be attending summer session, and will need to take medication during that time, please contact me BEFORE May 24th to make arrangements. As a reminder, there is not a health aide on campus during summer session.

Donna Carbajal, RVMS Health Aide (520) 879-3210 [email protected]

ATTENTION INCOMING 6TH GRADE PARENTS

You may have received, or will receive a letter from your student’s elementary school regarding required immunizations for the upcoming school year. Don’t panic! This letter goes out to all 5th graders in the district even if we have received your student’s current immunizations.

Below is the information you will need to know for your student(s) to be current for the 2018-2019 school year:

• Any student who is 11 years of age and in the 6th grade or higher, MUST have 1 Meningococcal vaccine (some physician’s will give this vaccine at age 10, and that is okay).

• Any student who has not received a DTaP, TD, or DT vaccine in the past 5 years must have a Tdap Booster.

• If your student has NOT had the Chicken Pox disease OR the Varicella vaccine, they must have at least one Varicella vaccine on record.

If your student has received these immunizations, please send me a copy of your student’s current immunization record the first week of school. My best advice is to get these immunizations done over the summer and out of the way. Starting in August 2018, I will be checking all students for missing immunizations. If we do not have record of the above immunizations or any others that may be missing, I will send a notice in the mail. Please keep in mind that these immunizations are a state requirement. Failure to provide proof by the given agreed deadline could result in your child being sent home until proof is received.

Please feel free to contact me at 879-3210 or by email at [email protected] if you have any questions.

PTA PostcardDear fellow RVMS parents,

Believe it or not, the school year is coming to an end! I truly appreciate all of your contributions, donations, and the countless time that you give to PTA and RVMS.

Thank you to all the kids and parents that participated in the World’s finest Chocolate fundraiser. We raised over $7000.00. Ice cream party TBD.

Monday, May 7th through Friday May 11th is National Teacher Appreciation Week. Every day something will be done to show our teachers and staff the tremendous love that we have for them. PTA funds this.

Our next PTA meeting will be Thursday May 3rd, at 6 pm in the RVMS community room. This will be an exciting meeting as we finish up business from this school year and begin to look forward to the next year. Do you have what it takes to be a PTA officer? I bet you do! There are vacancies that need to be filled! If you would love to be a part of our awesome team, as an officer or member, we would enjoy your presence. If you have any questions about what the positions entail, feel free to contact me.

Again, Thank you very much for all of your support this year. Have fun, take care, and have a great summer!

Anissa Hayes PTA President [email protected]
