The  Honey  Bee  Grant  Program  seeks  to  stimulate  curiosity  in  young  people  about  the  importance  of  honey  bees  in  our  lives  and  food  system,  the  need  to  understand  and  embrace  them,  and  the  value  of  caring  about  their  well-­‐being.

Equipment  Grant  Applicants  Only:  

Potential  estimated  cost  for  recipient:  If  selected,  the  grant  recipient  is  responsible  for  the  following  costs  associated  with  installing  and  maintaining  their  honey  bee  hive:  

1. $250  (Observation  hive  only)-­‐estimation  for  the  one-­‐time  installation  fee  of  the  hive  base.  Recipients  are  encouraged  to  use  an  on-­‐site  maintenance  staff  to  reduce  or  eliminate  this  cost.  

2. $300  (all  hives)  per  year  for  maintenance-­‐this  is  an  estimate  of  yearly  fees  and  could  include:  a. Initial  bees:  recipients  are  encouraged  to  seek  a  beekeeper  willing  to  donate  a  small  

colony  of  bees  b. Replacement  bees  or  honey  frames  in  the  case  of  a  colony  collapse.    c. Honey  d. Educational  materials  e. Other  supplies  or  costs  incurred

Hive  and  Grant  Package  will  arrive  by:  mid-­‐February  2018  

 

ELIGIBILITY:  

1. Applicant  must  be  a  non-­‐profit  school  or  non-­‐profit  children’s  programming  organization  that  works  with  students  in  the  grade  range  kindergarten  through  college  level.    

2. The  honey  bee  hive  must  be  used  as  an  educational  tool  for  students  in  some  fashion.  3. The  principal  or  executive  director  must  be  aware  of  and  supportive  of  the  honey  bee  hive.  4. A  certified  beekeeper  must  commit  to  support  and  maintain  the  honey  bee  hive  as  the  “Bee  

Mentor”.  5. There  must  be  an  individual  at  the  school  or  organization  who  is  the  designated  “Bee  

Advocate”.

All  applicants  that  have  submitted  the  Main  Application  will  be  notified  no  later  than  December  8,  2017.  Hives  and  grant  packages  will  be  received  by  mid  February  2018.

 Budget  

19. All  monetary  funds  can  not  be  used  for  real  estate,  travel  costs,  or  field  trips.  Any  funds  spent  on  a  scholarship,  such  as  to  attend  a  training,  may  not  exceed  40%.  Please  check  below  that  you  agree  to  our  budgetary  restrictions.  

20. Honey  Bee  expenses:  Please  provide  a  list  of  all  of  your  expenses  related  to  the  hive,  including  how  you  will  spend  the  monetary  funds  you  receive.  

a. Equipment  Grant  applicants:  please  detail  how  you  will  be  spending  the  monetary  support  of  $300  and  any  other  expenses  you  foresee  related  to  this  project.  Observation  hive  grant  applicants,  please  include  expenses  for  installation.  You  do  not  need  to  breakdown  the  cost  of  the  equipment.  

b. Monetary  Grant  applicants:  please  provide  a  full  breakdown  of  how  the  $1,500  grant  will  be  used.  If  your  budget  is  larger  than  $1,500,  please  share  the  full  budget  breakdown.  At  least  a  portion  of  the  funds  must  be  spent  on  a  bee  hive,  unless  there  is  already  a  fully  operating  bee  hive  at  the  location.  If  that  is  the  case,  funds  can  be  spent  on  supportive  items  like  a  pollinator  garden  or  educational  materials.  

21. Honey  Bee  Income:  Please  provide  a  list  of  any  income  generated  for  or  by  this  project  to  help  sustain  it.  This  could  include  honey  sales,  funds  generated  from  the  Pay  it  Forward  program,  etc.
