Synopsis
Chuncao Entering the Court
Li Banyue, daughter of Prime Minister Li Zhongqin, visits
Mount Hua with her maid Chuncao. They are intoxicated
with the spring scenery. However, they are harassed by Wu
Du, the son of the Minister of Official Personnel. A
migratory scholar, Xue Meting, passes by and saves the two
girls. Witnessing Wu Du killing a fisherman and assualting
the fisherman’s daughter, enraged Xue Meiting accidentally
kills Wu Du and surrenders himself to the court of the
prefecture. Madam Yang, Wu Du’s mother who enjoys an
honorary title, intercedes and persuades district magistrate
Hu Jin to sentence Xue Meiting to death. In a flash of genius,
Chuncao barges into the court and falsely claims that Xue’s
the son-in-law of the Prime Minister. Hu visits the Prime
Minister’s mansion to verify the case with Chuncao.
Chuncao intentionally delay the trip to have a plan to
11
circumvent the situation. Rushed to settle the case, Hu Jin let
Chuncao sit in the litter. In order to save Xue, Li Banyue
tacitly acknowledged the identity of Xue. Hu Jin then sent a
letter to the Prime Minister. Li Banyue and Chuncao visit the
capital and changed the denial letter written by the Prime
Minister and rewrite it to be a consent letter. At the end, Li
Zhongqin has no choice but to accept the marriage.
House of Hu
“House of Hu” is an opera adapted from the fourteenth
century classical romance novel “Outlaws of the Marsh”.
Towards the end of the North Song Dynasty (AD 960- 1127),
The Outlaws under the command of their leader, Song Jiang,
attacked the rich House of Zhu. Hu San Niang was sent to the
rescue of Zhu Family by her father, who is the lord of the
neighboring estate, known as the House of Hu. She engaged
in a fight and eventually captured Wang Ying, a commander
of the Outlaws. The opera presents a heroic courageous
female warrior showcasing her gallantry in martial arts.
The Treacherous Banquet
During the end of Han Dynasty, the evil Premier Dong, with
the backing of his adopted son, a courageous and handsome
General Lu-Bu, posed a menace to the country and the
Emperor. Many officials were looking for ways to get rid of
Dong. Both the Premier and his adopted son had a shared
weakness for beautiful woman. Minister Wang devised a
clever scheme to break up the powerful duo. With the
consent of Diao-Chan, a lovely singer in Wang’s private
troupe, he invited Lu-Bu to a banquet and let Diao-Chan
seduce him to fall in love with her. Then, at a later banquet,
Diao-Chan was promised to become a concubine of Dong,
creating a fatal romantic triangle. Due to jealousy, Lu-Bu
killed Premier Dong.
